3 years ago, a mysterious ddoser plagued RuneScape’s high-risk pkers. Players dubbed him the Greek God of routers. This is the story of Cheek Alerb: what happened, how players uncovered it and ultimately who was behind it.

The game servers just got DDosed... I was in world 302... As soon as i loged in youtube i saw your video.. So I guess someone is DDosing servers after they saw your video
Edit: i was the only one who got DDosed.. My runelite is dead right now and the regular client is working fine... I was talking to like 30 people on ardy bank that there is a heavy lag before i got disconnected.. Something fishy is happening

Abyss arrow is a well known ddosser back in the ventrillo and teamspeak days, just a little information. If he is being targeted by a ddosser it's his own fault. People feared Joining abyss arr0ws teamspeak/ventrillo servers because he was known for selling ips and ddosing people himself .

I don't think the people who are in positions of power at Jagex genuinely care at all about us players. The fact that PLAYERS had to gather evidence is ridiculous.
If you want jagex to start paying attention to their player base concerns, youll need to hit them where it hurts. Mass membership cancellation will do it in one month or even less.
By continuously buying membership on a monthly bases you're essentially telling them that they are doing great.

i am sorry to disappoint you, but VPN in these instances wont help.
So what is DDOS - Distributed denial of service, essentially is that you are getting more requests then hardware can give, lot of different types of how it can be done. Lets say for example TCP Handshake(in order to establish connection there is process called handshake that go client to server, server respond to client, Client confirms to server and establish connection) DDOS - is when only only 2 first phases established, and never actually client confirms connection. basically flooding router with requests.
So in short term it would be flooding device with requests of the data, that device just chugs, we are talking about thousands of requests per second.
when we have basic principles out of the way, so reason why VPN wont help.
when you log in game your connection is secured and server know your public IP that have connected, when VPN server will be DDOS there could be 2 things either it disconnects on client end. or it would take some time to disconnect, because as far as your computer know it is routing all traffic thro VPN server, and it will take some time to understand that is down.
Even if it disconnect quickly your public IP is changed, as far as Jagex server know, you are different client that try to connect to game, meaning your old character are still in combat and logged on, meaning you cant create new connection. You will get message about already connected.
I work in IT, i support clients, and in order to connect there systems (Domain controler, file servers, firewalls) i have to use VPNs, and i connect to VPNs lot of times per day, and that is problem what i sometimes get.

Honestly it seems pretty likely Cheeky Alerb was Jed. Being able to feed IP addresses real time to another player just seems completely unlikely, and almost assuredly something that would get found out quickly- whereas Jed himself, if he was the one doing it, would probably be able to shift the blame from himself for at least a little while.

I became aware of this game when I was a freshman in college about 4 years ago and my roommate was flipping out about remembering it and getting re-addicted to it. I've only ever played it once lol, but these videos are so damn interesting.
Runescape goes so deep, and i love that!! The f2p methods are very good!! There are not that many games having this!!
Runescape is one of the longest running MMOs on the internet, and it's always been rife with a lot of really wild shit because people with a lot of times on their hands (ie. young people and just general nolifers) would get super into it. I bet people who played Ultima Online and Everquest have similar sorts of stories, judging from my dad's stories, but since the audience of those games is much older from what I know it doesn't seem like people are making as many videos about it.

All for a video game, yes. But with how long it takes to acquire items of value in the game, it gives them a lot of real world value too. So when someone's doing stuff like this, they're likely selling the items virtually in exchange for real world money.... and they're likely making bank. IRL. So.... even crazier, I guess... not only for a video game, but abusing a video game for hefty real world gains. Crazy. That's runescape for you. So much so that it's literally the economic infrastructure for some third world countries. I'm not joking, look it up, lol.... probably shouldn't be laughing at that >.>

From a programmer/game dev perspective it should be obvious to not give all kinds of access to most devs, if any at all. As far as we know as a community, he had personal details on people and there's an ongoing lawsuit of jagex because of this.

At 10:03 in private chat it shows a player named Makendu. That player got my 14 year old younger self to try to log into a phishing website back in like 2009 and yoinked all my stuff and even dropped my torso. Sad to see this player still around and somehow keeps popping up on content creator's vids.

If Jed was doing some RMT on the side, this would have been a good way to farm gear and gold before flipping it.

lol I watch these videos having never played runescape lol. It’s almost like a mental exercise because I have to sort of figure out what these different things are. I am not really a big player of games but I do find the little black markets and unintended economies and the social hierarchy that form around certain games fascinating. The idea of some guy sitting in his room who in reality may be considered a loser but within the game he plays he has the power and notoriety of a Lucchese crime boss cracks me up.

-The contest is 24 hour HCIM fight.
-After the 24 hours you take your HCIM to fight.
-Places such as Dueling arena, Castle Wars, Wild(If you want to go hard).
Another similar idea:
-Get some Streamers & Fans.
-The contest is create even teams for a clan fight.
-Players have 24 hours on a f2p account.
-After the 24 hours the clans group up & meet in the wild. (Or a place where you can control the environment better)

He’s from the uk we don’t have felony’s just regular charges and nothing to him has happened since and he probably made a few 100k so I would say it went well

I don't get how players wouldn't first assume the person was somehow getting help from the inside. Think about how quickly you'd need to find their information. He doesn't have enough time to figure it out int he moment if it were from discord or whatever. It would need to be from something almost instantly.
