  • John Kotter articulated his 8-step process model for leading change in his 1996 best seller, Leading Change. And, although there have been some changes in terminology, all of his team’s research since has continued to endorse the basic 8 steps. So, what is Kotter's 8-Step Process for Leading Change.
Although I still refer to my original copy of Leading Change geni.us/rVLfV0n In this video, I use the more up-to-date labels for Kotter’s 8 steps, from his 2014 book, Accelerate geni.us/AH6uJBO .
    These 8 steps are:
    • Create a sense of urgency
    • Build a guiding coalition
    • Form a strategic vision and initiatives
These first three set up the basis for change
    • Enlist a volunteer army
    • Enable action by removing barriers
    • Generate short-term wins
The second three create an empowered cadre
    • Sustain acceleration
    • Institute change
The last two steps make create change

A while back, I asked Project Managers in a couple of forums what material things you need to have, to do your job as a Project Manager. They responded magnificently. I compiled their answers into a Kit list.

If you are involved in making any change in the world of work, Kotter's is one of the models you MUST know. And, if you are leading change as your job, then his 2014 book, Accelerate (geni.us/AH6uJBO) is one you really should read.

Oops - just spotted the Typo. Sorry, everyone!
Amazing how many times you can see something and not see it. Then, when it's too late...

Mike, thanks a million for this very good topic! honestly i came here for the project management content, but this video is fare beyond that! and the reason is: we need changes! there are many countries live today under dictatorship, many people suffer for many reason around the world either because a change is needed but no one is working on it! or there are a group of people who are working on a change but maybe not in a correct way! the world needs this topic! thank you again!

A slight correction to your video. In 1995 J.Kotter published his original article in the form of NOTs. In other words, it focused on the necessary Conditions for change. The book has shifted the focus to the Process. There is another book he wrote "Our Iceberg Is Melting", a story format, that makes both the conditions and process easier to remember. The two are sides of the same coin. Finally, when considering a change we need to look at what motivates the change: the Fixed Mindset (combative competition, exploitation) or the Growth Mindset (healthy competition). "We need to be careful what we wish for, unless we have a grace to hope that our luck can be shared."
