What is a Product Backlog and What is a Sprint Backlog?

  • My dictionary tells me that a backlog is an accumulation of uncompleted work or matters needing to be dealt with. In this video, I want to answer the questions What is a Product Backlog, and What is a Sprint Backlog?
    A Backlog is a list (usually structured by priority) of all of the user requirements. These are articulated in story format - see our video on What are Epics , User Stories, and Story Points? • What are Agile Epics, ...
    Typically backlogs consist of features the team needs to create. But it can also include:
    • Bugs to fix
    • Changes to make
    • Technical research to carry out
    • Supporting assets or infrastructure to build
    In Scrum…
    At the start at each sprint, a Scrum team draws requirements to work on during the Sprint. This part of the Product Backlog is the Sprint Backlog.
    The Sprint Backlog articulates the work that the Developers plan to accomplish during the Sprint.
    In Kanban…
    The team draws down requirements to work on continuously.
    Maintaining a Product Backlog
    This roadmap remains under review, as new requirements emerge and as priorities shift.
    The Product Owners should review the backlog to ensure any feedback from the team is taken account of, and prioritization remains consistent with users’ needs. This regular review of the backlog is often called ‘backlog grooming’ or ‘backlog refinement’.
    In Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)
    Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) has a series of backlogs of different scale, rather than a simple product backlog.

    A while back, I asked Project Managers in a couple of forums what material things you need to have, to do your job as a Project Manager. They responded magnificently. I compiled their answers into a Kit list.

    A central approach to making agile projects work is the concept of the backlog. And it is one many traditional project managers are finding ways to adopt into their approach. In this video, I'll tell you more about Product and Sprint Backlogs.

    This is detailed, wonderful, and easy to understand all I have encountered about how the backlog works in project management. Thanks for making this easy and possible.

    For the last 100 years, this was called a "to do list".

    • @Onlinepmcourses
      @Onlinepmcourses  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I agree with you... mostly. It depends on whether you view a To DO List as a list of things you will do (a Will Do List) or of things you could do (a Could Do List). I would argue that your To Do list should be a Could Do list and you then create a Will Do list each day, when you plan what you want to achieve. A Product Backlog is like a Could Do list and a Sprint Backlog is like a Will Do list.

      @Onlinepmcourses That's what you call a To Do list with an extra column or two. I think this first began with scratching cave walls. Just having some fun wirh you all in good spirit, and your video is good. My point is, orgs spend time thinking redefinition of simple trivial concepts is going to change their productivity while the issue holding them back is always people who can't write the to do list or management that can't understand the to do list. The problem is never how you wrote the to do list.

      @@mback12000 Ha-ha. I like intelligent critique. Yes, orgs do spend time thinking redefinition of simple trivial concepts is going to change their productivity. But the concept of a backlog, while not new, gave project managers a new way to think about an old idea. Sometimes, gving something a new name earns it new (and deserved) respect and attention.

    so kanban and Scrum is two different things, is that right?

    • @Onlinepmcourses
      @Onlinepmcourses  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, they are different. Both are different approaches to managing something. Both have been adopted as project management approaches, but both come from industry: Kanan from manufacturing and Scrum from new product development. For more information from me:
