- Morgan has unveiled the Super 3, the successor to the mad 3 Wheeler. Henry Catchpole takes an in-depth first look.
Morgan’s last three-wheeler left an ear-to-ear grin on the entire Carfection team. (Alex Goy even bought one: • Alex Goy's Morgan 3 Wh... )
Naturally, we were excited when we were invited to see its successor up close. Morgan has made a raft of improvements and alterations to suit a variety of owners' styles and use cases. They have taken the lessons learned from the off-road capable CX-T (watch our review here: • NEW Morgan Plus Four C... ) and developed the new Super 3 into a car that you can more comfortably take on a grand tour.
Henry Catchpole speaks to Morgan’s head of design, Jon Wells, to get a deep dive into the new and improved features of the Super 3.
Morgan is a Malvern based car manufacturer founded in 1910. They are famous for using traditional wooden construction methods in their cars and maintaining an old-school aesthetic that laughs in the face of modern and fashionable design trends. Their three-wheeler offerings are even more unique and are incredibly entertaining cars whether you’re driving, riding shotgun or watching it and its eccentric occupants pass by.

When you see someone so excited to talk about their creation. His expressions when henry talks about certain elements, just lights up and its so great to see. More importantly… NO TOUCHSCREEN!
Check out the Buckland B3, I worked with the guy who designed it. Much cleaner lines than this thing. I think Dick put a reconned Cortina 5 bearing Cortina1500GT engine in it. 130kg less, same top end and about 1/3 the price on the road.
coke?
@@grayzytube I justed looked at images of the B3 and its ugly
This is so much cooler than all the new hypercars and 100000 hp EVs - Great presentation from a guy with true passion in his eyes.
Agree
Yep, I'm sure you'll be buying one..
@@stephen300o6 I never said I would - I just said its cool :)
@@stephen300o6 always a knob in the crowd
Couldn’t agree more: this vehikel makes more sense and excites more then a T50 or T33-whatever…
I can’t stop looking at his eyes when he is talking through the car. His passion deserves lots of respect.
How marvellous is this bloke? He clearly loves his job and is justly proud of what they've created. It's so nice to see.
You can tell Morgan's head of design, John Wells, is really proud of this one!! He keeps looking over the Super 3 like a dad would look over his child...it's really great to see designers being excited about their projects...don't get that much in modern days with the cookie cutter cars out there...congrats to Morgan for another brilliant car!
rxmclaren7: It's almost like he is discovering new things every time he looks, even though he has been involved from day one.
@@PiefacePete46 it is truly lovely to see...most designers are forced to make do with in their time and monetary constraints...this shows what one can do if the gloves are taken off...
The guy was beaming ear to ear the whole time, you can even hear it in his voice how proud and happy he is with everything they do. Almost on the verge of happy laughter as he's describing everything. That's passion, loved this video. Jon's a very cool guy.
I’m really enjoying the direction Jon and his design team are taking Morgan. That lovely balance of heritage and modern, whilst sweating over the details, all mixed in with authentic engineering. The vehicles look like people have had fun creating them and this is only confirmed in Jons’ energy when talking through the car.
Congratulations!
I was clapping and rejoicing at every word he said. This is so pure! This is by far one is the most enjoyable interview to date.
can i just say its really nice to see a PR agent from the company thats actually truly into the product. And isn't trying to hit all the big buzz words but just lets his genuine interest and excitement for the product shine through.
Indeed - but better than that he is not PR so much as the actual designer
Jon Wells heads the design team. Lovely bloke
Yes you can just say.
@xbox gamer Albeit two months late to the party!!
Morgan is very important in todays crazy car world, showing that joy around 100hp is still a thing!
Because those 100hp deliver much more fun than any 600+ hp supercar.
What an extremely passionate and likeable chap John is. It’s clear that he’s extremely proud of the new model and absolutely loves his job. One of the most enjoyable and refreshing first look videos I’ve seen in a long time. Let’s hope the likes of Morgan and GMA continue to make cars for as long as possible. Also, the configurator site is amazing!
If there had never been a Morgan three-wheeler before, this would still be a classic. The concept is still valid, and the attention to detail is stunning! Well done!
Thanks Henry.
The passion of this man is contagious!
I love seeing john/jhon very excited to explain the morgan! Its rarely someone is excited explain their new baby ❤❤❤❤
Went from having a quick look-see to furiously scouring Morgan configurator. This bloke is brilliant. No marketing language, just pure joy over his new creation and it shows.
Light grey body with deep red sideblades and matching wheels if anyone's interested.
Genuine passion and it shows he's aware of the previous issues and doesn't shy away from them
Scott James: Absolutely... the previous issues are part of this car too. If the new car was sanitised, and totally perfect, it's character wouldn't be "right".
I love the accessories, the fully kitted-out car looks like it's from early motoring days, setting out on "The Grand Tour".
There's lots of "embracing" going on! But it's fabulous to see Henry chatting to a guy who is obviously proud of the car they've produced. I wish they were cheaper, as I'd love to have one. Although prices are relatively high, you can tell a lot of work has gone into it, and I'm glad people are still willing to pay for quality. Put a smile on my face
The idea of embracing, though, runs through this car. It's honest in that way. The designers completely bought into what this car has always represented; they owned its history. Seeing over the years what current customers do with them was no doubt incredibly inspiring.
Yea it won’t be robot made
This piece of joy (it’s Not „a car“; it’s a piece of joy!) is excellent and the guy, explaining it, is a true Ambassador to the brand! He makes one wanting this piece of joy immediately with his overwhelming enthusiasm about it! Congratulations, Morgan, not only for your product, but also for your choice of employees!
This thing sure does look cool. I still miss the visual "shock" of the massive v-twin on the front but they did a good job with this new model.
Axel Reunis: That chunky textured alloy casting helps a bit.
What a great guy! His enthusiasm and competence is positively contagious.
You can sense the passion put in this project, and the know-how applied to it heritage blended with design and engineering.
Now I what one to travel
As a french i love this new version combining modernity and authenticity. I hope I will find ones in my country in the future. Great great job...british are so good and passionate with cars and it makes a big difference...
I actually think this looks better than the 3 Wheeler. This is a huge win for the design team.
The proportions are waaay better on this one! And is more cute too 😅
The infectious enthusiasm, passion and engineering behind this is awesome. Great content from Carfection and Henry once again🥇
Genuinely love hearing Jon speak about the car. Can see him and the whole design team loves working to make this masterpiece. 👏🏽
I feel his enthusiasm through the screen. I think that level of passion and enjoyment will wash off on any project they create
Boy does this guy know his stuff. So knowledgeable and passionate about this car. Enchanting.
Henry, it is a long time due for me to have an emotional response to a new sportsar . This car is organic, it speaks to me. It is humble but still it wants to go on advanture. Great job interviewing Mr John Wells. It is surely his newborn baby. ANd the best thing, he would love to see her into as many versions as possible. Much better than a 1000 bhp supercar!
What a cool guy to interview! Someone who's genuinely excited and passionate about what he's doing and shares that.
Man that was fun watching him talk about the 3 Wheeler. You can tell the passion behind the project is real.
Can’t wait to see a first drive video! So glad that Morgan have put the time, energy and engineering led design into the next generation 3. Fantastic!
I already have an idea for taking one and doing a lap around Australia. Big thumbs up from me 👍
I hope you get to do it! Make sure you film it!
The 3 wheeler really has become Morgan's flagship vehicle. I bet they never expected that, but what a unique machine to put a manufacturer on the lips of every car enthusiast. Its why when you guys post a commentary on one of their vehicles I tune in asap
What a brilliant machine and how refresshing to hear how it was developed from such a passionate, enthusiastic and well-informed guy (Jon). Time to start saving !!!
Always cool to see somebody who is just in love with their job and doing cool stuff.
Fantastic job discussing it from both of you guys. True joy to listen to. Looking forward to seeing it on the streets.
Only Morgan takes inspiration from Star Wars Podracers and 1950s cyclops robots (EV3). Only Morgan
These long format talks with designers like Wells are INCREDIBLE. More please. Morgan, you revive the spirit of the EV3, with a penchant for adventure, I'll be on a plane to Malvern. Rock on chaps
As soon as I noticed an absence of cylinders up front, I thought this would be an EV. Pleasantly surprised.
Great interview and product. We wish them well...
Paul Elverstone
: I hadn't thought of that aspect; if you created an electric version of the old design, it would look pretty naff with a stack of Lithium-ion's out the front, even if you did arrange them in a "V". ;o)
John Wells is such a great presenter, genuinely loves and believes in the product and knows who it's for. I just felt good after absorbing all his zeal. Well earned easy day for Henry who just let him talk. Well done you two!
There's just something about Morgans, incredibly designed, handbuilt, down to earth. They're awesome.
I saw the EV3 on a factory tour and it looked amazing. It is still the only electric car I've ever craved.
Top bloke, Jon, great to see his enthusiasm.
Had the pleasure of looking at the salmon coloured one in close detail at the Sir Jackie Stewart Classic event in Lauder (borders) over a month ago.. incredibly impressive!! Star attraction of the event for me. 👍
John - congratulations on your project, it’s so rare these days to have the opportunity to create something unique and special and feel the passion you display in your job…keep up the good work!
This is such an impressive design, lovely to see such incredible attention to detail. Cant wait to drive one
I knew I wanted one. Then I hear him talking about it and I know it's only a matter of time. What incredible passion and honesty about his product. I need one.
Thank you for bringing Jon Wells along: what an amazing interviewer - all reasons to be proud of the newest and impressive baby Morgan. We lose some and win some but still tremendously customisable. Can't wait for the day I'll pop in Malvern for a look of the real thing.
I bought a SuperDry Edition and had to sell when i moved to Singapore. Such a regretted sale… I made lots of practical mods this new Ed now deals with…. Including some subtle power and straight pipes - just for the luv of V twin noise! I just hope that the metals (Steel wheel guards) and aluminium joints are up graded too. Whilst I will certainly re buy X-Wedge again, i would be in the queue for this given looks, practicality enhancements and design. Just pls Morgan - lets hope the materials are better!!! Or the warranty is!! Love it!
You can drive a Can Am Spyder in Singapore. That qualifies as a motorbike. whilst the 3-wheel Morgan is a car.
I love the enthusiasm of Johnathan wells, it's lovely to see someone, so passionate about their work & art of creation. I love Morgan's .
Nice :D. Cars like this show you don't need masses of horsepower (or 4 wheels) to have fun :). I can't wait for you guys to review this beast ;)
I was a huge fan of the previous 3 Wheeler and a lot of that was due to the unique powerplant and sound, with the vintage interior being another big reason. This new one I think looks better on the outside, but it sacrifices far too much of the charm of the old one.
This is the best car show in the UK right now
the mans enthusiasm for his work is infectious. Just makes me root for Morgan so much compared to these other boutique car makers. they just take an idea, and roll with it just to see how far they can take it and just have fun. I love it
OMG - I am so happy they found a way to keep the Morgan 3 alive! It was a sad day when the old S&S M3W went into the sunset because of emissions compliance. The three cylinder is brilliant - really great sound that suits the M3.
Thanks Henry! I will never own one of these but I am so glad they exist. The designers enthusiasm is infectious
Escapism on wheels...absolutely love it !
What a truly amazing video, the world is all the better for Morgan and its 3 wheeler. It looks stunning.
That was a very well presented overview, and engaging too from a marketing perspective; until part way through, I didn’t realise just how much I really do need a Morgan 3 wheeler!
Once I saw three Morgans three wheelers with three wheels in my hometown and I was so excited because these cars are so rare and a unique work of art because of their three wheels.
John Wells is so engaging to listen to! Fantastic - I just love the thought and passion that has gone into making this a true Morgan. I enjoyed this so much!
Words cannot express how much I want one of these.
We need Morgan to remind us all that it’s not about 500+ horsepower, it’s really about the feeling and sensations you get from driving . To get a glimpse of any Morgan will always makes me smile and you know the driver will not be tailgating and driving like a complete arse which is refreshing nowadays .
I can only imagine the feeling you would get from flying down the road by road wind in your hair and the odd bug 😆 Great informative video loved it
What a great spokesperson for the car & for Morgan. It's great to see a designer so obviously enthused & knowledgable about his creation.
The Morgan cars are just so inspirational, they look very organic, so much attention seems to be put to give just the right feel, the right look.
It looks like its primary objective is to make you feel all the right stuff. And that appeals to me so much, maybe one day
I have never seen such a genuine and enthusiastic designer like Jon Wells.
Might be a bit of a shock without the V-twin up front but the more I see the more I love it. Great customization options: colour schemes, wheel choices, pedal and wheel adjustment, saddlebags, interior trim...a great way to give each an individual feel. That light grey/black model iss unreal (but ditch the saddlebags and paint the sideblade black!). Fantastic!!
Super engaging/passionate dude. Morgan are lucky to have him.
Awesome vehicle...love it! The passion for this project is infectious, well done Morgan
The obvious enthusiasm of the lad from Morgan is encouraging.
Fantastic development. The guy from Morgan was superb, love his enthusiasm. Thanks Henry.
As a previous owner, there's no better buy for adventure filled with smiles and giggles :-)
Complements!!! Great to see simplicity of design and purpose in today's over engineered world. Wonderful interview and super interesting design.
Morgan is the pinnacle of car culture as far as I'm concerned. I was not disappointed when I went to the West Malvern factory and saw for myself everything I expected to see in a traditional British car builder. It only gets better, blurring the lines between owner and manufacturer (almost doesn't seem like the right word for Morgan building) when they are as much involved with the past, present and future of the car. My dream, that every care company could one day be Morgan. When did Morgan ever have a homologation team?? The 1000s of cars that never came to the US will prove my point.
I've always thought 3 wheelers were cool but could never imagine owning one.
This new one however, makes me want to start saving.
Love Morgan. Love the fact they are updating the chassis and manufacturing. Shame they lost some of the style with the new motor/radiators. I think I'd go Caterham 170, or hunt out a used Super Seven 1600. Long live Morgan / Caterham and all the fun marks. That CX-T is amazing :) :)
I just met a guy in the older 3 wheeler here in The Hague a couple days ago. And I was absolutely amazed by the car.
very interesting and good to see someone so passionate about there build
Absolutely beautiful update while keeping the original design elements!
This is the BEST looking 3 wheeler of the modern age.. those fugly Polaris Slingshots and T-Rex things… the Grinell just looks like a loaf of bread.. Nothing compares to this thing.. Can’r wait til they are in the States.
What a fantastic presentation of a stunning alternative vehicle .. well done to all the designers and engineers involved ... BRILLIANT
What a nice man his passion is stunning well done morgen
“There’s not even any wood under the bodywork”
Standard on any car, optional on a Morgan. Exactly the way it should be. Love you guys, love the work, looks amazing, dare I say better than the old one? One more cylinder, wider, faster, I can’t sing its praises enough. Greetings from across the pond!
-MD218
Oh my God, that desert sand color looks absolutely fantastic on the Super 3. I am in love with this one and I hope one day in the future that I would own one.
Oh I just got to the part where they are talking about the turn indicators. I think putting them on the wheel arches would have solved turn signa requirements without affecting the looks too much. I dunno, just my opinion. I guess I'll be able to do that as a modification to my future Super 3 :)
This gent is just as enthusiastic after several interviews on the bounce. And what a fabulous car.
NO WOOD IN A MORGAN, INCONCEIVABLE. You have made me drop my tea sir.
tbh, SOOOOOO want one.
Wonderful that in this day and age Morgan exists at all. I have a 2017 3 wheeler. Funnest car ever!
The rebirth of Chater-lea, a new Norton, a new BSA and now a new Morgan! ...British engineering really is back on the road it seems....
You can tell they're really proud of this one. Great look. I wish they had a 4 wheel 'off road' version with a roof. Canadian here and that would be just my jam. Could never afford it but I can dream.
Very nice and smooth discussion, thanks for your work and dedication as always !
I always liked the 3 wheeler, but this is amazing for a new generation! I love it!
It's not often that I get all the way through a whole In-Depth episode, but that was fascinating.
👍🏻
Really really good walkthrough on this one. Intresting and honest
embrace, embrace, embrace, thanks for another great in depth video, talking about design not just performance numbers....how to live with a car rather than road test it.
I understand why the old one had to go, but I am not sold on the new one. The old one had a unique look. This reminds me of several other 3 wheelers. It is probably faster. It probably handles better. It might even be more reliable, which the old one was known for a few issues. It just isn't as striking.
Bingo.
I loved the previous generation, and this seems just as cool.
I want one.
Fantastic car. Please let's see more of the car. We can hear the chap explaining the details. Don't need to look at his excited demeanor😁🤓👍
Truly excellent design work by the Morgan team and a good iteration over the outgoing car. Great to see a channel actually taking the time to speak to a car designer more in-depth, going beyond marketing chit chat.
great interview, obvious to see someone who loves a product and process
13:35 the a actual inspiration for sure 😄👌 great hearing the honest inspiration on these projects.
wow Morgan sounds like an exciting company to design for! Beautiful creation, guys. I'd love a crack at an inline-3 3 Wheeler! I wonder if any of these will come to Canada.
