The all-new Morgan Super 3 is Morgan's long-awaited update to their beloved Three-Wheeler. For the first time in a Morgan, there's no wood! They've also ditched the iconoic air-cooled V-Twin for a car engine, supplied by Ford. It's more powerful, usable, efficient, and better made than the old model. But does "better" mean it's better than before? Matt and Zack hit the canyons to find out!
Morgan provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.
FULL DISCLOSURE: Morgan's press fleet vehicles are stored and managed by Westside Collector Car Storage, which is owned by Matt Farah.

I love these vehicles where you feel like you are going fast but are going relatively slow. Easier to have fun.
It also goes to show how removed we are by new cars and tech from how fast we are actually going.
Whether that's a good or bad thing I don't know but you find out pretty quick if you lose control or hit something...

TBH.. the limits on a new Honda Accord, driven by an experienced enthusiast is capable of running 20+mph over the posted speed limit even on a B road.. By the time you push any modern sporty car to anywhere near it’s limit you are also increasing the chances of an “interaction”with a stoned, distracted, incompetent twit in a POS.. might be driving in the middle of the road… Might be pulling out of a side road.
I find it more fun to hoon around in an old Lotus 7, original Mini, a Miata, Focus ST ( the RS is too much) BRZ or FRS.. the lower limits also mean less chance of dying when you fail.. a Sprite or Midget is great for the same reason.. you can slide it around and still not leave your lane. I have faster cars.. but they are rarely pushed hard enough to break traction on the mountain roads where I live.

As a Brit I am delighted Morgan has carried on with the 3 wheelers. Another super interesting one to look at is a Pembleton V-Sport 3 which weighs in at 770lbs, a handbuilt beauty for less than $50k. I can't justify one in my garage... yet so I have settled for a Ural motorbike and side car to get my 3 wheel fix... so wrong it's right.

I'm glad to see helmets being worn driving this thing. Former Top Gear UK Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff was injured badly rolling one of these doing only 22mph without one. In the end, I would probably have just as much fun hustling a NA Miata around, maybe modded with ITBs to get bettter noise.

It makes sense that the main party trick of a three wheeler with all the power going to that bike tire in back is understeer. A fourth wheel would let Morgan design a proper turning/handling car without fear of everyone looping it immediately. Even those bad brakes are by design. Rapid deceleration would without a doubt transfer too much weight off the rear wheel. Not something you want around a corner when you have one wheel in back.

    • @a11oge
      @a11oge 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Speaking with a 1930's Morgan three wheeler racer (lady racer) at Spa last year, she told me she would apply the hand brake (that works the rear brakes) before appling the foot brake (front wheels) to avoid rear over taking the front of the car when applying stopping suddenly - remember this was an 90 year old Morgan and is a true racing machine. Today's three wheelers this would not apply, unless you have upgrade the front discs to such an extent that the rear becomes unweighted.

I do think modernizing the 3 wheeler is overall positive, but the video with Matt and Alex is one of the best ever. The old V-twin sounded like it was going to spin a rod bearing and cough a valve out through the exhaust in the best way possible.

I’m amazed that Lotus could legally only sell the Elise in the US for 5 years before it was deemed ‘unsafe’ and the S1 never made it to US on the same grounds and yet almost 30 years later, Morgan are able to sell a 3 wheeler with no screen & no obvious safety equipment in the US!? It’s a shame because US missed out on so many amazing cars from the Lotus Elise, S1 & S3 Exige, TVR’s etc.

I have taken test drives/rides in the Vanderhall Venice and Carmel, the Polaris Slingshot, and Can-Am Spyder... and I keep coming back to the Morgan (have never ridden/driven one...) in terms of looks... The thing is, I keep thinking about, for the same (or less) money, I can get a new Mazda Miata Club.... A few years ago, I drove the Vanderhall Venice, back to back, with a Miata... and as much fun the Venice was, the Miata gave me more of a grin and the ability to use it daily and for long trips, than the Venice... My wife was with me and she loved both of them... I did not buy either of those... a few years later and I am still trying to decide what the heck I want to get...
Love the Morgan, thank you for the video.

And for those that want the real vintage flavor, those can be had too. Variety is the spice of life.

This car would have been much better served by some type of “weird” car engine, or really anything but an NA inline 4 with even firing order. A 3 cylinder, inline 2, any kind of boxer engine, rotary, 5 cylinder, cross-plane I4 or at least a loud blower/turbo all would have given the car a lot more personality. Standard I4s have to rev to at least 9500 before they stop feeling bland.

Compared to the Slingshot,... well, in another 100 years, the Morgan will still be worth more. I hoped someone pointed out that our first reviewer IS Racing one "in the '20's,.."
The complaints about Manual Steering weight, sounds common from people too young to have driven small light cheap RWD 4cylinder economy cars, and never built up the muscles needed.
Just a shame to local importer licensed by Morgan, won't bring any of the new cars in to Australia, the 3-wheeler and the smallest of the 4 wheelers would be an ideal single-person commuter car, Plug-In EV versions would be amazing inner city.

They made it a better car which made it a less interesting sensory experience for the driver. It seems Morgan isn't immune from the same questions we've all been asking ourselves on other new cars today compared with ones from 10-20 years ago in regard to isolation, feel, engagement, etc.

I'd be curious how it compares to the Vanderhall Venice. I have driven a rented Vanderhall Carmel (basically a fancy Venice) with its turbo-charged FWD powertrain. It was a total hoot. Having the power to the two wheels sitting beneath the weight of the engine seems like a better arrangement. Traction control is absolutely required though.

There's more to the spirit of a Morgan three-wheeler than just the V-twin. The three-banger had a nice rorty sound to it.

Is it even still a Morgan without wood though? They could have at least added some wood trim.

I think a vanderhall would be best option. Only thing that sucks about them is they are an automatic but atheist your wife can drive it sometimes then

You don't have to wear a helmet in a Morgan 3 wheeler. i prefer the sound and look of the old one, it sounds so much better and looks like the original bike engined ones.

In conclusion, get a Polaris Slingshot; rear-axle-conversion, and you've got yourself a Caterham.

The super 3 reminds me of the "modern cobra" from xXx 2
It's probably a better car than an original cobra but I wouldn't buy it on styling alone - at least if they look like this none

I hate to be pedantic but, i think the comparison you want to make is to a first world war fighter, not a second WW one.
The open cockpit and exhaust note are definitely WW1. WW2 would be closed cockpit, supercharged V12 or large supercharged radial which sound completely different to the original Morgan three wheeler.

Whit Morgan relationship with BMW , I was willing to bet that it was going to have the new BMW R18 engine . … for me this change to a modern economy car engine is wrong !!!

You keep comparing the old v-twin to a WW2 plane, but actually an exposed air cooled engine mounted outboard is more WW1 than 2. All prominent WW2 fighters were water cooled and under a cowling like this one is. I also don't think the Super 3 shares a platform with the plus 4 & 6! Don't get the constant comparison to the Polaris either, people aren't buying this because it's a 3-wheeler, they're buying it because it's an entry level Morgan and is interesting.
