I owned this game as a kid too. I gotta say, I loved it, even though I usually died at the Jigsaw fight. I would keep playing it because it felt so good to shoot that machine gun, I used to just sit on that stage select screen and shoot at the brick wall background sometimes, that's how much I liked it. I haven't played it in probably 25 years, but I remember it being a very hard game. The cursor that moves your guns crosshairs takes an ice age to move across the screen, and also your character (The Punisher) is so big and slow, it's almost impossible not to get hit by enemy bullets.
One other thing I noticed just now, game was made by "Beam Software". You know what other LJN published game Beam Software made? The NES Back to the Future (another game I owned as a kid). This Punisher game is much better.
Watching this again, for a NES game... 8-bit... The colours, sprites and the destructible backgrounds are amazing for the time
Eveyone wants to crap on this game. But for the nes this game had destructible backgrounds, stayed true to the punisher character and had shooting and melee combat. Great game. And then for mike to crap on it saying its only moving to the right them play a shmup is max kek.
It's mainly the lack of music that hurts it. It's not too bad game overall. It's nice that the NES had a decent over-the-shoulder third-person perspective title.

Over here at Ed's bar we have agreed that Mike have never been so bored in a stream.
I don't know why I waited so long to check Matei out... I never watched LPs or streamers in general until recently. All have been pretty bland and way too tame... they are all just too young and limp wristed, afraid of offending everyone. After just 10 minutes of this, I feel at home.

I had this game when I was a kid. I had fun playing it. It's not THAT bad of a game, especially compared to just LJN games.
Nightmare on Elm Street is good.

I have never played The Punisher for the NES. But it does remind me a lot of Dynamite Duke for the Genesis, which is basically the same concept.
The best Punisher game is the Capcom arcade beat em up. Also on the Genesis too. But it's not as good as the arcade game.
It reminds me a little bit of "Wild Guns" for the SNES.

I genuinely think this game is great. Always have. The Punisher was one of the comic books I learned to read on.
Last time I played this, I got to the last level but didn't make it to Kingpin. You gotta get the armor pickups and as many bonus lives as you can get.
It wasn't until AVGN that LJN got its reputation. That rainbow logo was completely irrelevant to me until I was like 25 years old.
I like this game, Maximum Carnage, WWF Raw, A Nightmare On Elm Street.
It worked as a recurring villain for AVGN but, obviously, the lack of quality of LJN was over stated for comedy purposes.
Well, it was also said on the show, I forget what episode that LJN only published them.
Really, it's the various developers faults. This game was Beam Software, Friday the 13th is Atlus and so on.
It was just a common trait that many games that LJN published were poor, so there is truth to it.
But obviously some of the games are good, like Nightmare on Elm Street. And this game is fine.

I played the crap out of Maximum Carnage and WWF Raw with friends as a kid. Good memories.
There was a guy on TH-cam, I think he quit now but, he called himself the LJN Defender. I think he did good work for the most part. Other than rambling on and on at the end, pretty good.
LJN was truly just hit and miss like most developers. Capcom and Konami were generally good, but no one has a perfect record.
Aah missed this one gonna catch up tonight though.

With all its shortcomings, I still loved this game as a kid.
I used to see this advertised on comic books, but, never played it.
I used to play the Genesis version, completely different. I don't think I'd have the patience for this one, but you stuck through it. Great work Mike! Always a pleasure watching your videos.

I had just started the XenoCrisis video on your Twitch page and you were mentioning doing a co-op game with James at some point, so I thought I'd toss a few suggestions. SmashTV is really great in co-op. The snes version is good but the one on the 360 is a proper arcade port with arcade difficulty. The snes one is a bit easier. If you were able to get an arcade emulator working with 2 players then a fun arcade game is SilkWorm. I know it's on nes, but the nes port is rather poor by comparison. Incase you don't remember off hand, SilkWorm is a side scrolling shmup and with 2 players, one player controls a jeep on the ground and the other player is in an apache gunship. It's a really neat concept that you don't see all that often in 2 player shmups. Usually both players are in identical aircraft. Those are good too though, and speaking of; Darius Twin is a nice example of that on snes. My brother and I used to play all these games when we were kids, so I'm very familiar with the co-op experience in all of these. Going back to Darius Twin these days though, I'm surprised that we were able to make it very far because that game is mercilessly difficult. Although you are quite good at those games, so perhaps Darius Twin would be a cakewalk for you. One last suggestion just because it's totally out of left field. The original xbox version of Doom 3 has a co-op version of the campaign. You'd need to have two discs, two consoles and tv's and play it with a LAN connection, but it would be a weird and interesting thing if you could swing it.

I think everyone actually thinks LJN is a bad game developer. They are in fact, a bad game publisher. Literally an offshoot of Acclaim to get around the X games per year rule Nintendo had back in the day. Yet, some of the games they had weren't absolute trash. Some....

They are completely different games. Not really comparable in any way. Only similarity is the title and character.
I enjoy all The Punisher games I've played. NES, Arcade/SG, PS2/Xbox.

Knowing how sensitive Nintendo was at the time, it’s crazy how they published a game where you literally gun people down in the streets.
Imagine this game if instead of just that lone saxophone player, there would be more civilians roaming around that you had to not shoot in order not to lose energy. 🤣
Still a bit of a weird game in that it feels like it would be perfect for the Zapper, but it isn't compatible with that. It is only to be played with the NES controller.

29:54 Song is from Getsu Fūma Den, Famicom, Konami. Awesome game. Never released in USA, but there are fan translations. Definitely worth your time to check out. Has a really cool vibe. There are first person dungeon maze sections that might drive you crazy. Most of the game is a platformer though. Edit: 2:29:21 this song is also from Getsu Fuma Den I'm pretty sure.
Never played it, but what's crazy about this is that there is Karnov music while playing The Punisher. So weird lol

While I enjoy this game, its major flaws are the extremely repetitive stages and lack of music. Dynamite Duke for the Sega Genesis does a much better job, as it's extremely short, but sweet!
Beam Software definitely copied elements from that game, which drew inspiration from arcade games such as Operation Wolf and Punch-Out!! (for the up close boss battles).

Have you ever tried Alien Soldier for Megadrive tho? Not everyone’s cup of tea and I can only get like halfway through but it isn’t that hard to get used to and the gameplay as well as graphics are pretty awesome.

The Punisher is the best Ljn game but you should do a review on the Punisher on PS2 cause that was the best one.

I remember renting this as a kid, from what I remember I liked it, I liked The Punisher on PS2 much better.
Yeah, but there's no comparison. Obviously, a game 15 years newer will be better. There's no comparison with the Genesis or Arcade game with the same name either. They are all completely different games featuring the same character.

Normally I try leave to leave healthier comments in your chat because I know your brain could use a break from some of the dribble you have to read during streams. But this stream I wasn't feeling great so I listened in, fantastic stream. Also wanted to recommend a new bio pic called Tetris (2023) for both you and Erin. It's about the entire journey this guy went on to get the licensing rights for Tetris to be sold worldwide and it's absolutely bonkers watching him have to deal with the Soviet Union at that collapse of the communist party. I don't want to tell details but it's an amazing true story about a hellish journey to get the game sold. If you don't end up liking it feel free to tell me off during stream but you'd be doing a dis-service to yourself if you didn't watch this adventure in gaming history.
