I think for people like us (or Einar), our instinct would be to fight and hurt people only in self-defense, which is well and justified. But I think for Thorfinn and Thors, it goes a bit deeper than that. They've done their share of killing and hurting, they've taken and destroyed, for no reason at all. They have so much blood on their hands that to them is like an alcoholic saying: "it's okay to have a few drinks every once in a while, I don't have to swear off alcohol completely", but we all know the kind of snow ball effect that would have. If violence finds a way back as an option for Thorfinn, then he could easily continue spiraling down after a few "justified instances". So I definitely understand his vow and why he wants to take it seriously. It's also worth noting the brilliance of Yukimura choosing to deliver a pacifist message set in one of the most violent cultures and time periods in history - that's quite a challenge. If you think about it, taking a similar vow of pacifism in today's world really doesn't seem that complicated, and it's because of people like Thorfinn and Thors ,who dared to move against the flow, to think unconventionally and strive for something better that we have a world where violence actually seems to be a last resort, unlike the ancient times depicted in VS.
I think it is also important to underline that beeing a pacifist isn't just about being non violent. Pacifism is the choice to be non violent while having the option to enact effective violence. Thors made the choice to not kill everybody on Askeladds ships, we all know he could have easily. You must have the choice or it isn't Pacifism, it is just being choiceless.
likening thorfinn's relationship to violence to that of an alcoholic is genius and i think makes it easier for more people to understand. most people dont have to make such an extreme commitment against alcohol but they understand why a former alcoholic would do so. im definitely gonna use this to explain his oath from now on
16:46 No, Thorfinn wasn't forced to go to war. Don't belittle his guilt, that's why this episode hit and he is in so much pain. He had a choice - but being an emotionally devastated child, that he was, he picked the bad/wrong one. But he could have chosen another path later on until it was too late.
Exactly. "Don't belittle his guilt" is such a good way to put it. Thorfinn was driven by his own rage and hunger for revenge. Askeladd might have been a catalyst and an enabler who used that rage but he never forced Thorfinn. He didn't kidnap the kid nor did he ever say stuff like "Go to war or I'll do something that hurts you" (a.k.a actual blackmail). Thorfinn himself made the choice to follow him and kept following him out of his own free will, even when explicitly given chances not to. In fact his journey was full of choices because their interactions basically went "Hey, go do this thing will you?" "Nope." "I'll duel you after." "I'm already on my way!" Askeladd understood how Thorfinn's mind worked, how he was a slave to his need for revenge, and thus he dangled those duels like treats. He wasn't keeping Thorfinn on a leash, forcefully dragging him to war, Thorfinn leashed HIMSELF to Askeladd caring for nothing else except his revenge. Askeladd had no issues to use this for his own goals but at the end of the season he voiced his disappointment at Thorfinn's development, or more accurately: the lack of it. He never seemed to learn anything and just mindlessly chased after those treats. So yeah, while Askeladd had a role in sending him down that violent rabbithole (and then later pulling him out of it) Thorfinn wasn't forced. He wasn't unaware of other paths. Even his own mind (visions of Thors) was trying to tell him otherwise, yet he ignored it. And this is why his guilt runs so very deep and why this episode hits so hard. It'd indeed be downright offensive to him if someone was like: "Not your fault. You had no choice."
I feel like what makes Vinland Saga so special is that it doesn't treat violence casually, it doesn't glorify war or the vikings for being cool or warriors. That first season is such a clickbait, but I'm also glad that the creator handled it the way he did. He showed you one side of the story and then in the farmland arc he showed you the other side. He showed that all actions have serious consequences. I love that about this show. Thorfinn's ptsd, the way it's portrayed. His internal battle of ideologies. Him realizing that all the people he has killed, all the innocent people warriors like him killed, are in fact... people. They're not just another face in the crowd. They had families, they had histories, they were REAL people with real emotions. I respect that he realizes all that and wants to atone for his sins. Vinland Saga is an amazing story, no doubt about that.
This is the nightmare he keeps forgetting, Einar wondered why he called out for his father and Askeladd and we got snippets of him falling down the cliff in previous episodes
This episode made me so emotional, and I'm not typically the type to tear up when watching things but man this one got me. This episode is just a work of art, plain and simple. A story of growth and redemption for Thorfin trying to move past the unfortunate circumstances of his life and find peace. Thorfin, for better or for worse, seeing both of his father figures. Both trying to help him to forgive himself and move forward with his life. Both trying to save his soul from damnation. Beautiful.
Can#t believe they didnt made the connection that that was the dream that was teased for the last episodes and thought he was dying, really in hell or just having a random dream.
In Norse, the J is usually pronounced as a Y, so the proper pronunciation is Byorn (bee-yorn) Edit: technically, the name is actually Björn so it’s more accurately pronounced “bee-yērn” considering the umlaut (ö) but for American english it doesn’t really matter imo
Farmland will probably end soon if Canute and Throfinn will cross paths again. Thats where I think this season is heading to. Not a spoiler I have no Manga knowledge 😂
Animal fun fact: Cats can taste through smell. Look up videos of cats next to someone cutting onions! Also this is prob the best episode of anime/manga and something I rewatch every now and then. As someone with a shitty past It reminds you can still be better in the future. Own yo shit!
I mean, Berserk is infinitely more brutal and disturbing, even in the anime which is tamer compared to the manga. Vinland Saga is just a post 2010s Shonen and so very tame.
I'd say i really hated it when they were reacting with their high pitched during a heavy scene. There's like a sense inside of me which is like " that's disrespectful don't do that" . I think a more appropriate way to explain it is like.. if a kid's whole family got killed and he's trying to hold back his tears. And some girl goes to him and says i understand and starts crying. Weirdly it feels like a mockery of the kid. Idk don't take this too seriously.
Askeladd becoming a father figure is dumb. He left kid Thorfinn out to die all the time , and sent him out to do the most dangerous tasks cause he saw him as the most useless of his men.
@@user-dm8cx9oc4r Yeah he was probably hoping thorfinn would eat it on the battlefield. The only reason he spared him in the first place was because he respected thors so much, then only because he was useful. Im pretty sure askeladd wanted to see if thorfinn would grow up to be like thors and was very disappointed that he didnt. Askeladd wasnt really a parent/role model so much as he was a target/obstacle to study.
@@nullakjg767 Thorfinn should have just killed him in his sleep and went home. Cause realistically speaking that what’s would actually happen in thorfinns position
I really hope he’s not just a full blown pacifist I don’t want to see him just getting beat on and I don’t want someone he loves probably Einar and feel bad cause he didn’t protect them he needs to be like Thors and at least knock people out I have a bad feeling Einar will die and it’s either gonna make Thornfinn snap back to being a killer or make him feel awful for not fighting to help him😢😭I just need him to go live happy in Vinland
This episode had to be one of my favorites of the series so far. Seeing Thorfinn literally climb up through his trauma and inner demons, with Askeladd being motivator, so beautiful and powerful to witness. I love how the creator isn’t rushing Thorfinn’s character development, us as the audience. Are taking this journey with, and I really love and appreciate it.
The inner demon scene, reminded me of Berserk so hard. But hopefully Thorfinn has a more positive journey ahead of then Guts does. Happy Saint Patrick's Day my ladies. Saint Patrick's Day☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️🤗🤗🤗🤗
I think we either gonna have farmland saga for the whole entire season or maybe enemy Army is going to invade the farm and everyone has to defend the farm. Including thorfinn

That alcoholic example was great. Totally gonna use it too. Thorfin's extreme commitment to pacifism makes perfect sense.

I liked the scene where it shows that Thors carries the burden of those he killed with him while Thorfinn gets dragged down by them.

Beyorn is how you pronounce it
"Byorn", all one syllable.
@@adius256 If you want to take it a step further, it's "Byørn" (Bjørn). The letter "ø" sound is like the "Ea" in "Earth" or the "u" in "Duck"

Yeah that is why he calls it "a true battle"
there'll be action in future arc don't worry
Thorfinn is really going through it

yes LOL
