This track by Theophany was originally made available years and years ago on vgmix. That site eventually went on a long hiatus and much of its music more or less disappeared during that time. I happened to have this track saved on my computer and was in love with it, and I uploaded it to TH-cam in the hopes that others would discover it. I'm so thrilled by the attention it has since received. Please be sure to support the artist if you enjoy this track, I've added a link to his channel at the end of the video.
Ya know... it's been many years since I've found this song, and yeah, the soundtrack is out now which is amazing.......but there's something special and nastolgic about this specific version of the song. Every so often I get reminded about this song and I just feel inclined to come back and listen to THIS version, the beginning of it all.
+Thomas Brimacombe I think thats why Majoras Mask it's the greatest Zelda there is and yet to be. Because no matter how much you like Midna or how in peril Tethra is, you aren't really ... involved.. In all Zeldas everything it's on link's shoulders, should he fail, Hyrule would peril, you know this fact in everygame, but in Majoras, as soon as you begin to listen diferent music, diferent stories and character you start to get involved, like, fuck I REALLY got to save them all, it's not only Hyrule this time, the entire world it's about to perish unless I do something, I felt it that way, and really got involved with every character in the game (As crazy as that sounds). Long live Majoras. Operation Moonfall.
Also the fact that you can LOSE if you don't succeed in your mission. In all others you only fail when you die, here if you let the timer go off, the world dies. The reactions of the townspeople are harrowing too.
When I was a Kid I like Ocarina a lot better, but this was also a time before I really wrapped my head around the stories. But as i got older I started paying more attention to story (I'm a Story over Gameplay Gamer), But not only that I started getting into, not necessarily, but games that made me think, that challenged my Wit along side Skill (Reasons why Dark Souls has become one of my favorite Games) But anyway, As I grew up Majora's Mask Definitely my favorite, Ocarina has more Sentiment to it, but If i had to pick Majora's is definitely number one.
Exactly, No other zelda has showed so much emotion before. This game is a true game, As I run through clock town i feel joy, as i make memories in it. When it's time for link to end all the evil and face it you feel both sadness and dread. @Nintendo We love you! ;,)
This game speaks thousand of words on how to tell a good story. The NPCs in this game feel like they are real, they have real world problems an react to them in a way thats natural. Characters rarely over exagerate what they need. Each character has a life story. Which is why I think plot wise this is the best Zelda. Without the plot its not the best. When you talk about Majora's mask you talk about Cremia's hug scene. You talk about the composer brothers, not about how you fought a boss.
That's precisely why this is the best Zelda game. Good story is a lot harder than some artwork. There's millions of talented artists who can create amazing art. You don't have to make that art have a conversation with someone like a story does.
"Time passes, people move. Like a river’s flow, it never ends. A childish mind will turn to noble ambition… Young love will become deep affection… The clear water’s surface reflects growth…" -Shiek
This is the video that years ago introduced me to Theophany. Since then he has become my favorite artist. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for introducing me to this beautiful music.
"Ocarina of Time is nowhere near as serious as Majora's Mask. In OoT, you start as a youth, going on an adventure to wield the Blade of Evil's bane, travel through time, save the seven sages of the land and defeat the tyrannical Gannondorf in order to rescue the beautiful Princess Zelda. In OoT, you fight to beat the cruel bully and bring peace to the land. In Majora's Mask, you must fight simply for the dawn of another day. No more, no less."
In Ocarina of Time, you watch the world itself fall into ruin and it's people into dispair. Then Link must give up his friends, his childhood, his innocence, and be banned from ever returning to better days in order to fix it. The world is fixed but Link loses everything. Majora's mask is the final act in that story. Link returns to the forbidden forest with no faerie, dooming him to death and purgatory as a wandering Stalphos. "you've suffered a terrible fate," Yes, yes he did.
Wow. You know I never realized that. Majora's Mask was my favourite N64 game and my first Legend of Zelda. I recently re-played it and beat it 100%. I love looking into the games themes and meanings but that honestly never struck me. Thank you for pointing that out. I am now going to re-face Majora as Link and win the fair/proper way. Once again, thank you.
I gotta say man. This was the first game i ever played that i really cared for the well being of any of the townspeople. Well done with the music and the pictures. Damn Majora still creeps the hell out of me.
it's also by Theophany--cloudrifter rebuild maybe? Just search and you shall find. It has an amazing piano score and angelic chorals. mmmmm *wetting panties*
To each their own, I suppose. I honestly prefer this version. It's much creepier and more lonely. Then again, I can see not liking it as well for that very reason.
This was beautifully done. A little bit creepy, a little bit sad, and a little bit hopeful. A wonderful embodiment of the game. Thanks for making and sharing it!
This is the BEST LoZ Remix I have EVER heard, and I don't think it could have possibly have been done any better. If and when they remake MM, I want this somewhere in the game, if not as the main menu music.
+dualblades47 i only made it to the start of temple in Woodall! It's all hard! And what i dont like is how the time goes really fast i had to keep redoing the says just to get to it! And i remember the witch in the forest and you have to give her a potion and urghh how mad it made me when link kept drinking the potion! Did that ever happen to you??
I was link for Halloween and people called me zelda, the next time I was in class on a computer I was looking up all of the different versions of the hylian shield, then my teacher said what are you doing, then said she loved playing that game when she was younger and then gave me reeces butter cup XD
This song is just so beautiful. It carries madness in its atmosphere, and has a calm sense of death and fate. Yet, it somehow manages to instill hope into my heart. An absolute masterpiece!
Glad you enjoyed it! This artist just released a second full album of Majora's Mask music, you can find it via the first link in the video description.
Such a beautifully haunting song. I think it speaks for the Zelda franchise how musical styles ranging from epic to frivolous, majestic to elegant, mysterious to candid, melancholy to cheery, and orchestral to MIDI can all pass perfectly to the theme of Zelda games. I love the many aspects of Zelda, and I hope the designers continue to expand upon this versatility.
Best musical track in existence. I mean that. No other song sounds so sad in the same time like this one can. I can relate any number of scenes from other movies, games, books, even my own life to this song, as if a distant memory were flickering in and out of existence in the back of my mind. It makes me realize that, even if I were to become immortal, I would still die from non-natural causes. No, the only constant for us is time. When even that finally fades away, this is what will play.
This is absolutely beautiful. ...And even though Majora's Mask doesn't have Ganon, Zelda, or the Master Sword in it, it's still a Zelda game, as well as Link's Awakening, and Minish Cap.
I just realized we had one of the most mature conversations/arguments (idk which it is...) there is on youtube... Thank you for being mature. unlike others I have talked to..-_- bad memories....
Thank you Nintendo for making Majora's Mask. Thank YOU to the maker of this music.... and thank you to the minds behind dark and forbidding stories to make it possible.... All in all...Real majestic piece....I can imagine Link riding away very slowly on Epona. He's found Navi and they are all headed away from Termina....because maybe Link became powerless to stop Majora? Just a thought.....
That's why I think this is the best Zelda game- not because of the gameplay or anything else like that, but because it is so dark and has a much deeper message. The focus on sidequests like Kafei and Anju, which really focus on character development and, ironically, the fact that eventually everything comes to an end, especially in a series about saving the world from destruction.
No matter what, no other game can bring such pure emotion in the player. You take the roll of hero, yet it is different then it used to be. There is no princess, nor a legendary quest to accomplish, only an overwhelming gloom of death. To witness how the people deal with tragedy as you play through the game, who they'll be with, where they'll be in the end, its heartbreaking. And to realize its all on your shoulders. That you are the only essence between life and death, its frightening.
also notice how the kids are in the moon, each one saying a question that kinda concerns growing up and facing reality, etc... such a touching game, such an amazing game
This is pretty amazing actually. The sound effects in the background add to it, like the laugh, the galloping, and Epona. MM has something no other Zelda has that some have already mentioned, and that's the life of the NPCs combined with the dark story and ambience. In retrospect after Twilight Princess and the Hero's Shade, this whole game is like a nightmare for OoT Link trying to escape the Lost Woods, if that's the correct theory. This song captures the feel of MM perfectly; sad and dark.
It took me years to pass that game... and I love it. No regrets regarding that. It was most definitively the best game ever. You could see the emotion in it. If they let this game die... Ben will pay a visit.
It also focusses heavily on sidequests instead of just having to collect 100 of somethings you actually get to interact with NPC's and each NPC has their own story, their own daily rythms and basically their own life. That's what makes this game so special for me, the whole world just feels so much more alive. The NPC's actually mean something to you, you WANT to save them. That's my favorite kind of storytelling, when the game tells the story itself without having to rely on 5hours of cutscenes
Those long comments always seem so epic with epic music in the background. Btw, yes you are fully right. Good or evil is just what we choose, everything is just boundaries that WE set for ourselves or others make up. :)
Well said! It's very creepy to think about, that the Fierce Diety Mask wields more evil than Majora's Mask itself, and yet the player choose to use it against him.
A common complaint of Majora's mask is that it is depressing, that the sense of doom is almost oppressive, but that isn't true. The unbridled madness of its characters, their grief, their stories it presents an unprecedented freedom of the mind, a carthatic paroxysm of emotion. It's beuatiful as well, how the skull kid encapsulates innocence(a child) and death(the mask). I have no qualms in deeming this one of the most masterful pieces of art ever created, not simply a stunning video game.
It takes great willpower and courage to actually be able to pass this game without either crying at least once, or being emotionally scarred in any way, unless you are emotionally barren or can't understand the storyline, a very strong game indeed.
Majora's Mask is one of the, no no, IS most tragic game I ever played in my life. The whole situation it played in. The music, the character, the events. Everything. What make it more tragic is the fact that if you fixed a problem, eventually you're forced to play the Song of Time and make the problem restart all over again.
Just for the fun of it, I played this on Dec 20th too...right before midnight. I knew nothing would happen, but it still felt epic to listen too and to imagine being in Link's footsteps on that final hour.
Same here. My childhood is with Super Mario Bros. 3, Sonic Advance 2 & 3, Mario 64 DS, OOT,MM,Crash Bandicoot 2, and Pokemon Silver. I feel that I was born at the end of a great legacy of games, and the beginning of a fresh new one. Nintendo for me has more meaning to it. Classic Sony was awesome as well. I will never forget my reaction when Claus died in MOTHER 3 or when Navi left and Link returned to his own time or when I beat the Elite Four and went to Kanto. So many memories...
This is a version that Theophany did a long time ago. He reworked this song and built an entire album around it. This is the original remix that has been uploaded for years.
Hmm... "Dark doesn't mean evil", that's actually interesting, I've never looked at it from that perspective. Like I always understood the notion that most things are neutral and can be used for either good or ill. Haha, you've given me a bit to think about, cheers. :) Also reading your comment with this song playing was pretty damn epic!
That's what I liked about MM, it was very subtly one of the very dark toned games. I loved that for once in a Zelda game they actually changed the gameplay style from their routine games. In OoT when you come back 7 years later, the townsfolk don't even seem to acknowledge all of the troubles in Hyrule... or the fact that you know... Ganon has taken over the area they used to live. In MM, you have a sense of people being afraid of the moon crashing on them and as you said they felt more alive.
This track by Theophany was originally made available years and years ago on vgmix. That site eventually went on a long hiatus and much of its music more or less disappeared during that time. im so happy you're still around, i go back to this song every now and then :D
Note for others that both albums are on Spotify, so you can support the artist by listening there as well

playing this on Halloween, one trick or treater that was dressed as Link mad my day
Your icon made my day! Love Code Lyoko!
ghostlink2027 thanks
This is one of the most beautiful songs that I have ever heard. Listening to it takes me to a happy place that few others can bring me to.
"Ocarina of Time is nowhere near as serious as Majora's Mask.

this has to be played on my funeral
Are you asking to die? Or?
Ur going to give everyone who attends permanent depression disorder
that dark, melodic atmosphere throughout the entire game, is just unique and matchless
Did you know That the piano notes at the end of the song are the same that the one at the begining but reverse (sorry for the mistakes i speak french)
I gotta say man. This was the first game i ever played that i really cared for the well being of any of the townspeople. Well done with the music and the pictures. Damn Majora still creeps the hell out of me.
Goodness, this is so epic
i'd never once considered a multi-verse style angle on the repetition of time in this game. you just blew my mind.
There is an even better version, but this one is still really good.
And by even better I mean like silently weeping because it's so beautiful.

I... no words.
This is beautiful. That's about as close as I can get, and that doesn't do this song justice.
Probably shouldn't be listening to this while a tornado is heading towards my house. Dammit, me, what made you think this was a good idea??
are you alive?

His clocktown remix is probably my favorite. It almost makes you feel even more sad that this amazing town full of lively would be dead without you.

Thank you for being mature. unlike others I have talked to..-_-
bad memories....
This is my favorite Majora's Mask remix ever ever ever.
Un retour dans le passé a chaque écoute, indémodable ;)
Agreed. That's why this is still my favorite game in the whole series.

Just...amazing....I think....I'm crying...how beautiful it is
No matter what, no other game can bring such pure emotion in the player. You take the roll of hero, yet it is different then it used to be. You're the first person to make me cry, from a youtube comment. Goddamn you.
This is such a beautiful song. It feels my heart with feeling...
I just realized that the Song of Time is played at the end, but with a different rhythm from usual. O.O Awesome.
It took me years to pass that game... and I love it. No regrets regarding that.
It was most definitively the best game ever. You could see the emotion in it.
If they let this game die... Ben will pay a visit.
Hands down best song to play on a rainy day.
The best description of Majora's mask ever
It also focusses heavily on sidequests instead of just having to collect 100 of somethings you actually get to interact with NPC's and each NPC has their own story, their own daily rythms and basically their own life. Beautiful, sends shivers up my back
Yep and proud that I got that kind of understanding from it.
Those long comments always seem so epic with epic music in the background.
Btw, yes you are fully right. Good or evil is just what we choose, everything is just boundaries that WE set for ourselves or others make up.
:)
your offering pleases me greatly
Well said! It's very creepy to think about, that the Fierce Diety Mask wields more evil than Majora's Mask itself, and yet the player choose to use it against him.
It's awesome and frightening all at once how well Google manages to create the My Music playlist just for me. This was #2 on it.
This gave me goosebumps. Just ... amazing.
Not a problem. Music is a big part of the Legend of Zelda series. It's really cool that even people who haven't played the games enjoy it as well.
You've done an amazing job. Thank you so much and keep going!
Absolutely beautiful.
Dude, I love this song!! should of guessed this was also your song..
Kudos bro. Fantastic Remix ♥
I still get goosebumps from this song...
A common complaint of Majora's mask is that it is depressing, that the sense of doom is almost oppressive, but that isn't true. This is one of the best but also saddest songs I ever heard..
6 years huh? Time flies.
This totally sets the scene of a castle with a king watching his army crumble into ruins in the middle of the night.Epic.
It takes great willpower and courage to actually be able to pass this game without either crying at least once, or being emotionally scarred in any way, unless you are emotionally barren or can't understand the storyline, a very strong game indeed.
Majora's mask, best creation of the man. The perfect game, just PERFECT !!!
I read your article while listening to this... It was beautiful!!!
this song just make's me think about things in my life...
So many memories...
you and ZiggyR2750 made me realize that MM is the best game ever. MM mask in my opinion has the story in video game history.
If Majora's Mask ever has a remake, this NEEDS TO BE the title screen soundtrack :D
Extremely well said.
he just....intensifies th madness. causing it to increase. this is sort of how majora and fierce work
This is a version that Theophany did a long time ago. He reworked this song and built an entire album around it. This is the original remix that has been uploaded for years.
Couldn't have said it better...
You pretty much just summed it up for all!
and that is usually the problem, not with what's said but how it's said.
Hmm... "Dark doesn't mean evil", that's actually interesting, I've never looked at it from that perspective. Like I always understood the notion that most things are neutral and can be used for either good or ill.
Haha, you've given me a bit to think about, cheers. :)
Also reading your comment with this song playing was pretty damn epic!
Me. I was replaying the game a couple of months back and it inspired me to write the poem.
after hearing this 3 times it makes me wanna cry
That's what I liked about MM, it was very subtly one of the very dark toned games. I loved that for once in a Zelda game they actually changed the gameplay style from their routine games.
In OoT when you come back 7 years later, the townsfolk don't even seem to acknowledge all of the troubles in Hyrule... or the fact that you know... Ganon has taken over the area they used to live. In MM, you have a sense of people being afraid of the moon crashing on them and as you said they felt more alive.
haunting melody of awesomeness

Amazing, it is heard by the whole body not just the ears
This is so beautiful.
