He and Daemon are going to be likely my favorite characters when the show ends. They both emit a charismatic presence that you quiet down and listen to what they have to say because they're the kind of people who do what they would say instead of just saying it. Straightforward badassery
They're the best ones to do it since they are like 3rd party country compared to the South despite being Westerosi since their culture is completely different. It's because they are so separate from the South and northerners hold a more straightforward honor and justice, they are the best at being the last line of defense to rebellions. They are the heavy hand that reforms the South because you can't expect much ambition from a foreigner who can't understand or assimilate to the southerners so a northerner usurping the throne is unlikely. But they are the most brutish since they don't hold the grace of court life in the south. In other words, they're naturally the best defenders of the throne and ironically because their culture clashes with the south so once they're done with their business, they go back since they can't and won't take over the iron throne.
I'm so excited to see Cregan Stark on House of the Dragon. We probably won't see him until the middle of season 2 though😥😢. Honestly, Cregan did get rid of those schemers and liars. People who take advantage of the young King Aegon. But his biggest mistake was not pursuing to the Barathtions for their betrayal, to Oldtown where the Hightowers remain unloyal Raenera's son, to the Lanisters who did not return the crown's wealth at the end.
He did want to actually besiege Oldtown, Storm's End and Casterly Rock to root out traitors and secure fealties - but that was before Corlys sent out peace offerings which he reluctantly had to honour.
Peace was signed and he couldn't find a reason to kill the remaining Lannister as he was extremely loyal to both Aegon II and his brother when Cregan went after those that killed Aegon II. Apart from him, all surviving members were women and children.
It is not an error. He didn't because he just couldn't afford it. The Lannisters and Baratheons are defeated and in dire straits but their castles are impregnable. It would be even worse against the Hightowers. They have the means to raise armies very quickly, they are the richest house on the continent, not even counting all that they were able to seize during the Dance and the portion of the royal treasury they hold, they have a fleet of war, a consequent supply, considerable influence, a millennial pact with Highgarden, impregnable walls. The Northerners would have absolutely no chance of winning.
He was not actually wrong since history has proved that the Hightowers mostly stayed out of the crown politics from then on and the Baratheons until the era of the mad king but it was due to a different issue. The Lannister suffered the most of all under the Greyjoy attacks with their Lord king and literally most of their fighting forces died and Lannisport sacked. As for the crown's wealth it was debatable where it really has gone since it might be returned to the capital when Aegon II took back power.
Obviously what I meant was Robb trusted Roose Bolton meanwhile Roose was scheming to take the rule of the north for himself. Stabbing him in which he did and all the rest of the north lords.
