Those men chose to leave their homes to head south looking for battle in the hopes they could die warrior's deaths and not be burdens to their northern families during a long and brutal winter. They quite literally went looking for death.

It is reasonable to point out to anyone who are raging over Cregan Stark's decision to execute King Aegon II's killers is that the Starks and most of the North value honour and each other to get through the harsh winters. They are more isolated and rule a harsh land. Cregan supported Rhaenyra and now her son Aegon.
Cregan, and like his descendent Ned Stark, see things black and white not the shades of grey in Kings Landing. Corys, Larys and Ser Perkin may have just prevented a king who would've fanned the remaining embers of war. But Cregan is not going to see that.

So many things are missing from this analysis. It does a huge disservice to Cregan's character. Was it all about "honour " ? Or rather that they were simply breaking the law. The whole purpose was to clear enough corruption from the court so as to secure Aegon III's regime. After all, what kind of precedent would poisoning a King set ? What Corlys, Larys & etc did may have prevented an immediate war and yet nursed the right conditions for a future one. This comment on reddit sums it up: -"His point was to prevent future war by ensuring a more stable and righteous government. A system founded on murder, backstabbing, and poisoning lacks the legitimacy necessary to prevent future mayhem. He never claimed nor aimed to purge all corruption from Westerosi politics, only create a stable black-led government that will ensure a prosperous peacetime."

Lord Cregan Stark, the embodiment of stern, northern leadership. Cregan wanted to continue the war and root out the houses of all traitors, but his actions and methods are justified, since there was no authority, honor or discipline in King's Landing. He wanted to get rid of those ambitious traitors and oathbreakers eventually gave the realm it's long yearned peace, restored the order, put some fear in the hearts of lords and commons alike and settled the matter for good. He came all the way from north with his host and accompanied by the armies and knights of Vale and Riverlands and found out that his queen was long dead and the king was killed by traitors. Oaths were just winds for those who held no Gods. They said, the matter is solved, you can go back, but it was the hour of the wolf. One by one heads rolled on, the ice saw the business pretty well, each day harsher than the other, the last day he became Aegon's Hand since there was no honor among men and never agreed to leave without the promise of a maiden's hand.

Well, I do not believe the dance was over at all. The battle and bloodshed, yes. But, as the dance started with crows, treachery, and ink, it could end the same way. I really like Corlys Seasnake, but boy, he was old and hardly the same kind of strong support as before.
So, in my opinion, Cregan's host put a lot of muscle in Aegon's claim. He also did not have any commitment to unfaithful Larys Strong and the kinds as Lord Peake. It's something like a warning: "Beware, unworthy scum, for I am the wolf, and I do not melt here in kings landing. Don't mess with my boy Aegon". In a sour, loyal dull northern way.
I still like him a lot. Not as much as Benjicot, Alys and Corlys, but quite.

Winter was approaching and so it was no time to reduce the north of its able bodied men and the heirs to their great houses. Cregan took care to conscript all the old men, unwed, homeless, childless and younger sons that stood to not inherit anything. He meant to march on Casterly rock, Oldtown and Storm's end. Dealing out justice to all. A vastly more ambitious campaign that required a lot of manpower and so he needed the years to gather supplies and train this army.
Rob called his bannermen, the knights and footmen who train year around. While enough to defend the north, it was never enough for a lengthy campaign. Any siege of a major city like Casterly rock would've liked broken Rob's army.

All due respect to Cregan, he was a good politician and had charisma etc. but I do think even with winter etc. he could have marched earlier. Yes, he still marched when Rhaenyra was dead already but also dragons were out of picture and he had little to lose. If Lads had been defeated by Borras Baratheon, then probably Aegon III would be executed in King’s Landing and he could easily bend the knee and say that since there is no successor to Rhaenyra, Aegon II is the true king. And he would have been pardoned as who the fuck would march IN WINTER on Winterfell deep in the North. Without dragons in picture he could have even proclaimed himself the King in the North or new King of Winter and fuck off back. But since Lads won, he had free passage to the capital city. And he didn’t overstay his welcome there too, sure he did some stuff but the “Hour of the Wolf” sounds much more badass than what he did actually.
His march was a brilliant move and no wonder people love him, but ultimately it kinda smells more like a PR thing to the North to me.
Lads did the heavy lifting. I mean if they did not crush the Baratheon host, even when Cregan and Arryn lady arrived, what would they do? They would have gotten rid of Aegon III in King’s Landing and other houses would make prace as there was a king on throne and Rhaenyra’s claim was over. One battle actually decided it all.

So what if it was? The whole point of the Dance of the Dragon is not just about who gets to sit on the Iron Throne but also whose bloodline gets to hold the Iron Throne for a very long time and no matter how much Rhae's name has been stained or hated by her own descendants this doesnt ignore the fact that it was her own blood that the next Targaryen Kings carry on the Iron Throne as they own the 7 Kingdoms of Westeros and as long as the Targaryens who came after her live on including the Blackfyres and by extension the Baratheons since Robert's grandmother is a Targaryen so is Rhaenyra's blood. A fact that not even the Laws of Men can never change no matter how much everyone denies it not even her own scions.
As a matter of fact, in some ways, this is a kind of legacy that Tywin had been chasing, a blood line that would last for many many years, which us why he has been trying to convince Jaime to cast aside the White Cloak.

He really did set off late on purpose. It's either that or the north would starve during the winter as what happened to the Karstark's holdings in GOT time. He went back to the north with greatly reduced host though. As stated here, they marched with the full intention of either having an honorble dead or plunders to support them through the winter, denied both, majority did not go back with Cregan but instead found employment/ widow to marry in the south.

I do not take Cregan at his word about the "old, homeless and unwanted" marching down south. It's simply not true, what would be said of all the Knights and lords who came with the Warden of the North himself? All the countless thousands of farmers, smiths, miners, builders who were essential to Northern society? No, this was a very shrewd, politic thing of Lord Cregan, a threat even. "My poor country has expended much in a time of great need to fight this war, we shall not go home empty-handed with no plunder or conditions from the Throne for our succor and support in the coming winter." Stark himself was quite shrewd, he had to be. He negotiated with Prince Jacaerys and upset the coup of his uncle Bernar. He knew that by seizing power, even temporarily he could curry royal support that would see the North through the winter.

What's interesting about Cregan Stark is that everyone sees him as a great charismatic warrior, while everything about his actions shows the opposite : a coward and a blusterer. Come on, the guy waited for the dragons to die, then he managed to arrive after the fights, then he vainly threatened Aegon's former allies to continue the war knowing that he would have had no chance of prevail, then he condemns Corlys Velaryon to death but gives up as soon as Alyn Velaryon threatens him to come to King's Landing, then he renounces his position as Hand of the King and leaves Tyland Lannister to rule the kingdom. In the end, the guy did absolutely nothing. Probably the most vain, swaggering and cowardly character of the whole war...
