Exquisite. A marvel of craftsmanship and engineering.
We’ve been dumbed down through the ages.

I have seen this in action at the Bowes Museum a few times and it never fails to astonish me. Just stunning.

You, sir are totally lacking in imagination. This several century old device is captivating. What have you created that even comes close?

Lol just a mechanical thing, my guy it’s fascinating on so many damn levels, do you even consider just what is is, how it was made, how old, it’s literally one of the best works of art.

We have visited the Bowes Museum on at least two occasions. The silver swan is an incredible piece of mechanical engineering, a real masterpiece. Clockwork mechanism, no electronic wizardry here !

Amazing. I only learnt about this today from my northern girlfriend. Being a southerner never knew!

Hi Mark - I would also like permission to use this wonderful video - it's for a Garden History course at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, many thanks, Jane

Hello Jane, this is the Bowes Museum's official video of the Silver Swan. At the time I posted it, I worked at the Museum. I'm sure it will be fine for you to use it. Love the Royal Botanic Garden.

Darn it. This is one of the best videos online because they're no museum guests to make coughing or talking noises, and yet, there is no sound at all. What gives?

    • @markvallack
      @markvallack  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, sorry Floraline. There is no sound as the clip was taken from a recording which was used to play on a screen advertising the Swan's location. The screen was/is in the gallery next door so no sound was required.

still better than the clip where someone loudly complains 'is that it'

Oddly enough, this work creeps me out a little.

Where does the fish go after it is swallowed? Is there a mechanism underneath the glass rods where it is returned to the "water"?

Hi Mark! I tried to pm you on youtube, but can't find the way to do so!. I'd like to use your video and any other footage you have on the piece if possible. Could you message me back please?. Thanks a lot!! :)

@@markvallack Thanks a lot for the reply and the offer!.
Do you have this material in high quality? Where can I download it from?. Do you have any other close-up clips of details like the water, and the fish?.
I messaged the Bowes museum too about it, and they seemed fine with me including this piece in audiovisual work. However, I couldn't find your video on their site and I am now trying to track some 3rd party footage which was used by the National Museum of Scotland. Feel free to send me a PM on youtube so I can reply to you there!.

Hi, I am afraid that I don't have a high quality copy. I used to work at the Museum and copied this from a low resolution file. I have no other clips or photos. Maybe other visitors to the Museum have their own recordings which they have put on TH-cam? I'm sorry I can't be of any help.
