It is definitely the sweet spot all this 4k 60 on console seems like a struggle for them to hit so they might as well shoot for 40 with the highest res possible.
I nearly always opt for a higher framerate, but the 40fps uncapped mode is so good in this game. The raytracing looks awesome, resolution is crisp, and it's fluid enough for me to really enjoy it. I wish more games went this route.
I'm exact same, couldn't believe how good it looked/felt on fidelity. Playing on performance does look that little bit smoother, but not enough to push me to that mode
@@cameronlittleton8240 So what's the best experience with the visual and steady good frames? Put Fidelity mode then VRR uncapped and then 120 hz enabled?
One thing I learned while playing this game is that the difference between 30 and 40fps is way more significant to my eye than I ever anticipated. Absolutely loving the 40fps mode.
Performance mode doesn't cut it for me, the game looks blurry on a big screen. I wish they'd include a performance mode with no raytracing and better resolution like in previous games. Though I have to say the Fidelity mode at 40 fps + uncapped VRR is amazing. Strikes a great balance of image quality & fluidity.
Yeah, I'm really hoping they add a standard performance mode in a future patch. It's how I played 1 and Miles Morales and it was perfect for me, I don't like the hit to crowd density that has to happen for nicer reflections and shit
Fidelity mode is a MUST for me on this game, the visuals are unbelievable, in performance the characters look kinda playdough like, the slight drop in frame rate is noticeable but its not gonna ruin the game AT ALL all the animations are done so well that it really doesn’t effect it to bad
I've been playing in Fidelity as well. For gameplay I like performance mode most of the time but cutscenes just don't look good to me in higher framerates. It reminds me of soap opera effect from smoothing motion for movies/TV shows.
It's actually been debunked that it can hit 120 FPS. There were other videos that pointed out digital foundries mistake. Even uncapped it does not go above 60
Performance all the way for me, it really isn't noticeable while playing since everything is moving fast most of the time, only in the forced moments where you have to sneak, walk and talk!
Fidelity 120 uncapped is really amazing. One of the very few times I selected fidelity against performance in games. The visuals are amazing and the 40-60 fps is pretty smooth in general.
Devs can implement Low Framerate Compensation by themselves. They did it with Ratchet and Clank and first Spider Man... so 40 fps vrr actually works. @@casey_sux
Been playing at 40fps, 120Hz and VRR at smoothed and it's looked and played incredibly well. Genuinely felt like 60fps and had to do a double check with my settings on multiple occasions.
12:00 seeing peter's warped reflection in the balloons is such a cool use of rt for me. Even on performance mode it looks so amazing and makes me wish this gen had a bit more rt horsepower so stuff like this could become more of a standard!
the pro will be coming out next year probably and then it probably will become the standard...wouldn't surprise me if they gave Spiderman 2 an upgrade for the new system as well kind of like they did with Spiderman remastered for ps4 pro
If you have a 120Hz VRR TV or Monitor, this game is best played at Fidelity 120Hz mode with the unlocked frame rate. While it does drop sometimes, for the most part my monitor is reporting upwards of 50fps when traversing the city and I’ve seen it report nearly 70fps during some interior scenes. I normally choose to sacrifice RT in games for 60fps, but I’m so impressed how well fidelity runs that I’m sticking with it for now.
@@Omega3000-y9rperformance mode takes away from the HDR experience, the loss of picture quality is not worth it, by far the worst performance mode out of the last three spiderman games.
@@Platerpus7From ~2.5m away from a 65 inch 4k tv, I really don't see a huge difference graphically, but the fidelity mode has a lot more people and cars on the streets, it is packed compared to the performance mode. What I find to be the most impressive feat coming out of insomniac is there ability to drop these technical masterpieces and be able to do so one after the other in what seems like a very short amount of development time. I don’t know what they got going on in that studio, but it seems like the entire industry could learn from them.
Of course this game had a short development time. 😂 They literally have made 3 games that are based in the same location. They obviously used assets from the first 2 games. Essentially, only had to work on the “new” sections of New York. 3/4 of the game was copy and pasted. That’s sooo impressive 🥱🙄😲
Sony fanboys after insomniac releases the same game with slightly better graphics for the 3rd year in a row, aka the call of duty model: "wow! How do they do it?"
I dropped Spider-Man 2 sadly because of the image quality in performance mode. I know ray tracing is the "big thing" in gaming and every developer wants to opt for it but I am missing the normal performance mode without RT from the other two Spider-Man games. I was shocked how blurry the image looks in Spider-Man 2 performance mode. I tried all of the graphic settings and switched my TV settings all the time as I thought something must be broken but no: it actually is the game itself. I even reinstalled Spider-Man Remastered and checked there and I've been confirmed that the image quality/resolution is way better here in performance mode compared the SP2 which is very sad. Spider-Man 2 performance mode comes with a blurry image resolution, bad colors, artifacts and it even uses dithering/ghosting instead of normal transparent effects. All of this worked better in the previous games. I hope Insomniac will patch the old performance mode without Ray Tracing as additional possibility. I don't need Ray Tracing if it is impactng so many other key components. Am I the only one who noticed that as I only hear praise about the technical aspect of the game?
fr, i am loving the game but the way that performance mode looks honestly got me changing and changing between fidelity and performance, i find stupid that they did choose rt over 4k, the game loses so much in performance it’s honestly sad, cause it looks unbelievable in fidelity
@@lautsss2333 exactly, the Fidelity mode is just to clunky for me as I am missing the "smoothness" from the first two games (especially for this kind of game with great swinging animations etc)... Either they patch the old Performance mode back in or I have to get a VRR screen to at least get that 40 FPS 😅
Great overview. Personally I can’t imagine creeping around in 30fps trying to spot RT reflections in door knobs, I’ll take 60 and swing wildly through the city all day. Love to see the options though!
Definitely agree that the game is better at 60fps however there's more to the fidelity mode than better Ray tracing. You will also get a higher pedestrian and traffic density as well as higher quality hair for characters. But if you don't have a 120hz TV 60fps is the way to go.
💯👌 To each their own….. but I can’t do performance mode. Dead Space, Forbidden West and now Spider-Man 2 in Performance mode looks like a cartoon, + low population, low traffic, jaggy hair, low res ray tracing. Low shadows, reduce motion blur, Low quality visual effects just to make the game run smoother. Running in Perf mode makes SpiderMan 2 look like a ps4 game. Just with really fast loading. But I get it, most gamers don’t care about visual effects now days. All they care about is framerate no matter what. I can understand that for multiplayer games, but for single player games, especially relatively easy, single player games, I need 4K Ultra. Just my preference tho.
100% agreed that 60fps is much superior. I don't know what's happening with 40fps craze, feels like some gaming enthusiasts are under collective insanity. One day they woke up and decided "ahh you know what, i want to go back to choppy low fps".
@@ryanh.739dawg in all of the shots in this video the traffic density of performance mode is EXACTLY EQUAL to fidelity, there’s only a few shots that show lower pedestrian density 😂
I'm playing in performance mode when doing open world activities and switching to fidelity for story missions. The 60 fps is a must during fights and open world travel, you are crazy to play this in 30-40 fps just to watch some cleaner reflections. Insomniac are god tier now!
Funny how out of all the amazing tech and visuals the one thing that really blew me away was some suits have a cape and the soft body physics on the capes are next level and make me want a Batman game from these guys : D
@@irecordwithaphone1856 oh yeah i remember those batman games but i had to beat the first or second with the batman beyond suit, those capes looked so silly i couldnt do it : P
I am playing in Fidelity mode with VRR uncapped and I feel like I’m getting the best of both worlds. The frame rate is 60 most of the time and 40 in this game looks great. I don’t want to miss any RT goodness, and there is plenty on display in this game. After I beat the story I will go to full performance mode and see what super 60fps looks like.
game looks pretty great but i think the RT in performance mode is clearly very heavy and as such visuals take too big of a hit for me. i wish there was a non-RT performance mode. but either way, the 40Hz mode is great so i've been sticking with that! i can't believe there's still only a handful of games this gen that offer a 40Hz mode!!
Rocking the game on Fidelity+120Hz+Uncapped. Having no issues at all. It’s quite admirable how Insomniac is managing to run all this and also give RT reflections on 5700xt equivalent GPU on PS5
@@ps5professionalYeah, but the GPU in the PS5 is most equivalent to a RTX 2070. The RX 5700 XT is actually slightly more powerful than a regular RTX 2070. Even then, performance difference between a RX 5700 XT and a RX 6700 is negligible.
@@mattmastrandrea3965 I tried that myself and smooth ironically looks too juddery to me, at least on OLED. Uncapped spends most of its time higher than 40fps which seems to resolve the problem.
I'm playing in performance mode 120 Hz with vrr unlocked and I don't even feel the need to try anything else, the game looks absolutely stunning and runs smooth. Goty contender for sure
Man the fact that they can squeeze out 60fps with barely any visual differences speaks volumes about their technical expertise. 60 really should be a bare minimum expectation by now but the last 2 Microsoft titles (Starfield and Redfall) were capped at 30fps on console.
As 120hz displays become more ubiquitous I really hope that 40fps becomes the new 30. It’s noticeably smoother, and comes without a lot of the cutbacks of the higher frame rate modes. I love it.
@@SeasoningTheObese yeah. It kinda sucks. I don’t think people foresaw the new tech like dlss, line tracing etc, and how expensive they might be on performance. For some games it might be worth the performance cost, for others definitely not. I think 40 is noticeably smoother, but going from 60 to 30 almost feels like watching stop motion until your eyes reacclimatize. For most games I think the extra fluidity does more for “real feel” than the new tech does. But 40fps I feel is a good sweet spot. So when 120hz displays became the baseline standard, maybe 40fps with all the Bells and whistles can become the new low end with 60 fps and 120fps options depending on the game.
I tried both modes myself and I don't like the 60fps mode, it sacrifices too much of the image quality. This isn't really noticeable on a 1080p display, but anything above that it really stands out. If, like me, you're on a large 4k HDR tv then the difference is quite stark. What I might do is try the performance mode once I've finished the main story quests, but for the time being I'll put up with the fidelity mode because it looks absolutely stunning.
Really disappointing that the performance mode is visually worse than Spiderman Remastered's performance RT. 900p on a next gen exclusive is pretty poor. Wonder if this is an indication of developers focusing more on 30 fps modes for graphical fidelity and shoehorning in low quality 60fps modes; after a promising couple of years of solid 60fps options on PS5. Hopefully we get a performance RT option again but still a let down for release customers.
@@callumeaton5451 My thoughts were the same. I was extremely disappointed at how bad the performance mode looks on my 4K HDR 55inch TV when compared to the fidelity mode, which is quite amazing. Though, I can't handle 30fps for longer periods, so I had to go back to 60fps. One thing that I observed was, in the later half of the game it looks much better, it doesn't make sense but that's what's actually happening. I've played around 12-13 hours and the first 4 hours were horrible (visual wise). And I was so disappointed that the game looks worse than the 2018 remastered PS5 version. Maybe insomniac can notice that and fix it or give us an option of performance RT like the remastered version.
@@callumeaton5451 You wouldn't even be able to notice any of this if you hadn't watched a video full of stills and slow motion blow ups of tiny sections of a window in a game where the you're fighting, flying and swinging at 90 mph most of the time. And as someone who just replayed Spiderman Remastered on performance RT in prep for this, if you think it somehow "looks worse" than Spiderman 2 you're one of internet comment bros talking about something they've never experienced like some phony. I felt Spider-Man miles morales had better performance settings than spider man 2
I’ve noticed this with Ratchet and Clank snd Horizon. Forbidden west as well. Fidelity mode looks breath taking in these games, performance mode is a huge drop in visual quality, but still fun and much smoother. I find myself using fidelity mode more often since the change is so drastic for me.
I recommend building a PC so you can have the best of both worlds. I changed over in 2016 because of how under powered the consoles were, and I can't ever go back now

Lots of games due to bad optimization run worse on a 4090 than a ps5 lol. For single player games like this the 40fps fidelity is perfect. Good optimization beats brute force any day. Just look at Mario wonder on the switch a 8 year old mobile gpu in a 7 year old tablet. Skill of the devs matters so much.
For fidelity fans.. Turning on 120hz mode enables 40fps with the same high quality. On top of that you can turn on VRR to get it to smooth out uneven frames or uncap the framerate. VRR reduces resolution slightly. To better improve quality.. play with visual settings like film grain and chromatic aberration. Removing film grain really improves the image here. The contrast slider too should be adjusted as per your display. Moving it from the default at 50 to 65 improved colours and shadows for me.
Actually, enabling 120hz mode on fidelity reduces dynamic resolution too, even without vrr, I have tested it and it’s noticesble. So for best picture quality stick to 30fps unfortunately
I do not understand why every dev turns on film grain by default. It looks bad in every game. I guess they just use it to mask jagged edges or something idk.
@@Bakerwar If you're playing on a 4K display then yes it's noticeable, 120hz mode will keep fidelity at mostly 1440p resolution, being rarely at 4K during motion. 120hz mode seems perfect on the 1440p monitors, you have no choice but to play at normal 30fps fidelity if you want to maintain 4K resolution most of time.
@@ancientflames It's to maintain cinematic experience during cutscenes, while this mode indeed sucks when it comes to fidelity, it's just a filter that can induce the artistic aspect of a cinema movie.

yep i believe that, the first entry also wasn't like that day 1 and got more added features after release especially the RT performance mode, but u know what even if not it's solid as is, I'm good with/play fidelity mode or the 40fps mode anyways (of course they could have cut some of that back to make way for the increases in detail of the other areas and still be able to hit 60fps in performance mode)
@@SHEPARD22 besides again they could have cut some of those RT elements back to make room for the increases in detail of the other areas and still be able to hit 60fps, would it be nice to have accurate reflections on the smallest of objects like the lightposts, sure, but a cube map suffices since 9 times out of 10 a gamer will not care to pay attention to that and if u absolutely must have it, it's there in the fidelity mode/40fps mode, so yeah literally a none issue...add it later in performance if possible, for now let everyone just enjoy the amazingly polished game 🤷♂️

I was sceptical about paying £60 for a video game. I had some money in my pay Pal balance from some album sales so purchased this and Mario Wonder. Spiderman 2 is a substantial leap over the previous two games from a visual standpoint. Superior city detail, colour and lighting. Oliver. I heard your thoughts on RT being pulled back a touch in performance mode but the speed that you can traverse the city is most likely the reason. The speed with the wing suit and using air currents is about 4 times faster than the other games in the series...this may explain the mild cut backs? What Insomniac has made here is phenomenal. Both in detail, story and even more important, gameplay. It's such a leap over other AAA first party games on other platforms. I've come off the back of a 2nd play through ,this year on PC maxed out.. originally playing Spidey on PS4 Pro and then Miles on PS5. Spiderman 2 surpasses the PC versions of the previous two games maxed out by quite some way . Lucky for Sony as Insomniac are holding the fort right now...an incredible studio PS: I care not for super heros, Marvel etc but I really enjoy these Spiderman games.
Doesn’t matter what mode you play on, this game feels better than any other game’s performance mode. 30 feels like 60 and 60 feels like 120. It’s just the smoothness of the animation, the incredible cohesiveness in the picture, and amazing use of motion blur. Add those together and you have a 30 fps mode that I don’t believe I would call out as 30 if I played it not knowing.
I found out that if you Use the 120hz mode, the image is limited to YCBCR422 color display ( on a 4k display). So if you use a 120Hz display with VRR SMOOTHED option, i suggest you disable the 120Hz mode to have full RGB 12b Color. BUT keep in mind you have a bit more latency.
The only way to enjoy fidelity mode is to turn on 120hz uncapped, the visual downgrade in performance mode is simply not worth it. The difference between full RGB 12b and 8bit is barely noticeable.
Spiderman 2 is one of the few games where I found the fidelity mode quite noticeably better than the performance mode. I recommend fidelity. Better reflections, better hair, and more crowd density on the NYC streets that put Cyberpunk 2077 to shame. Have fun guys!
Cyberpunk streets are very active now coming from a pc player .And I’m playing sm2 on my ps5 now . Great game btw gameplay is so fluid and story is great

I’ve been choosing performance mode every time in my PS5 games but I tried fidelity here and was stunned at how smooth it was. It’s the best 30fps I’ve ever played, I’m not sure how they pulled it off. The visual hit in performance is a bit too much for me.
I'm usually a performance man myself, however, only if a game can maintain a 1080p or above output. Given that I game on a 65 inch 4k tv, anything below 1080p just looks too soft image wise. I'll probably opt for the 40fps fidelity mode for the first time. Really seems like that is the most balanced mode available if you have the tv/monitor to support it.
The 120hz Fidelity mode with VRR enabled on my LG C1 is super impressive. It gives the impression of over 40 fps for sure and I'm curious if that is what I'm actually seeing.
With Insomniac, we discover once again what master optimization is. The end result is just incredible. RT support even in performance mode, almost non-existent loading times and the New York transcription is splendid. I play it in fidelity mode + 120Hz. Which allows me to play at 40Fps with the graphics at maximum. This game is full of detail and everywhere you go, you see the masterful work that Insomniac Games have managed to do. Already with Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, we had already had an incredible result but here, this time, for the continuation of Spider-Man's adventures, we have something crazy! Thank you Insomniac Games for continuing to make us dream. We really need it!
I will play in performance mode, the visual quality is strill great and the gap isn't that noticeable unless you compare the two side by side, and as good as the fidelity mode looks you lose all the detail in motion at lower framerates. I hope they patch that shimmering in the LOD though, it's distractiong, but other than that 60 fps it is. What a great job Insomniac, I hoper this serves as an example to every developer putting lackluster perfomance modes in their games.
I actually found is very noticeable, something just felt off when I switched to performance mode and I think it was losing so much detail in the distance which you spend a lot of time looking at when swinging around the world.
My only problem with performance mode is the crowd density, otherwise I think it looks gorgeous. I'm hoping they address this in a patch; maybe you could turn off ray tracing in favor of crowd density!
The visual disparity between modes is even more significant in late game when visuals really ramp up and there’s a lot going on on screen. Fidelity Mode is def the way to go with this one. There’s also a lot of aliasing or shimmering in general in performance mode that is definitely noticable from a normal viewing distance.
Great coverage! The only option i would personally avoid is the 30fps Fidelity Mode. This game really needs the extra fluidity to shine and even the 40fps is a decent upgrade.
Insomniac has seriously impressed me. Like many here, I'm rocking the 120 VRR with the Fidelity at 40. It's really awesome. Insomniac has set the bar. Best superhero games out there
Performance mode is just so much better. Fidelity literally feels like slow motion. It's amazing how well they utilized the abilities of the PS5. It really shows how capable the PS5 is.
Also note that when you are in fidelity mode 120hz VRR cap 40 FPS the video output switches to YUV (slight difference in colorimetry) and no longer to RGB because of the flow rate of HDMI which is currently incapable of supporting 4K 120hz in RGB
I just upgraded to ps5 after owning an xbox since the ps2. One thing I immediately notice about next gen is that loading times are cut down by about 80%. I also like how the cutscenes flow really smoothly with gameplay. If I glide into somewhere the cutscene will start with my character gliding in and it seems to be pretty dynamic.
Here's the thing... We aren't on PC so if I'm going to have to play the game in 30fps to see Ray tracing, I'll be more than happy not knowing what im missing in performance mode. RT is cool but definitely not worth the cut to performance
You can go with the fidelity option in up to 50fps, you aren’t 30fps limited assuming you own the tv hardware. A PS5 Pro next year may get that closer to up to 60.
Honestly I hope insomniac brings out a patch like horizon forbidden west to upgrade the pormance mode’s resolution, since I feel it is possible to keep it at 1440p with a solid 60fps
@@jblaze600, I'm thinking of getting an OLED someday for my PS5, but I have to be careful of purchasing an OLED as they are likely to get burn-ins over time.

This is basically the dream for me at 1440p and 60fps and people are still not happy lol If games would run like this forever I would be happy with it.
It’s this whole thing about running before you can walk. “Delivers graphical fidelity in an open environment”. So if they didn’t have an open environment, can they achieve higher fidelity? Why not have the best visual experience before we move towards open world? I still haven’t seen many amazing titles that blow me away without the open environment, and we’re already full forcing this having the culture “good enough” visually

Great video, Oliver. One nit-pick is your view that RT is reduced overall in perf-mode in SM2 vs SMR. We need to remember that the quality of the RT itself ( where both are matched up ) is significantly better and water retains RT which didn't exist in the remaster at all so it evens itself out.

I can't believe we're dealing with 30 fps in 2023.
@@SeasoningTheObese yeah. It kinda sucks. I don’t think people foresaw the new tech like dlss, line tracing etc, and how expensive they might be on performance. For some games it might be worth the performance cost, for others definitely not.

VRR does not kick in until 48fps
Actually, enabling 120hz mode on fidelity reduces dynamic resolution too, even without vrr, I have tested it and it’s noticesble. So for best picture quality stick to 30fps unfortunately

I'll probably opt for the 40fps fidelity mode for the first time. Really seems like that is the most balanced mode available if you have the tv/monitor to support it.
Good motion blur?
Same, the effects and crispness combined with great motion blur make 30 fps fidelity mode look and run great. Too bad I don't have vrr 😢
The 120hz Fidelity mode with VRR enabled on my LG C1 is super impressive. It gives the impression of over 40 fps for sure and I'm curious if that is what I'm actually seeing.
You can check fps push the green button on your remote 8x fast
@@paulgal holy crap! Confirmed. That's awesome. Thank you!
VRR doesn't work under 48fps
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 Not true with the C1.

You're not even getting the VRR effects unless you hit 48fps
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271Game is fun and looks great. If all that matters are numbers then you are gaming for the wrong reason.
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271Bro did not check Rtings 💀
@@ThrobingkcocLook at Jedi Survivor and say that again
4k40 fps you are not playing with max graphics, the resolution down close to 1440p
The graphics, sound and haptics on this are next level.
On my LG CX I have it set to 120 on fidelity. It’s flawless l!! Amazing.
Great coverage! The only option i would personally avoid is the 30fps Fidelity Mode. This game really needs the extra fluidity to shine and even the 40fps is a decent upgrade.
The difference in NPC density honestly make me wanna play in fidelity mode
Timestamp?
But if you play without limit, use the RGB range?
I just upgraded to ps5 after owning an xbox since the ps2. One thing I immediately notice about next gen is that loading times are cut down by about 80%. I also like how the cutscenes flow really smoothly with gameplay. If I glide into somewhere the cutscene will start with my character gliding in and it seems to be pretty dynamic.
I'm looking at all these comments but yet no one's talking about Spider-Man 2 bugs🤷♂️ what a lot of people are experiencing
I had one npc walking on air, no more bugs
Peter turned into a sugar cube lmfao
Same I noticed quite a few bugs.
Probably not mentioned because they aren’t rampant and will no doubt be patched out asap.
Here's the thing... We aren't on PC so if I'm going to have to play the game in 30fps to see Ray tracing, I'll be more than happy not knowing what im missing in performance mode.
RT is cool but definitely not worth the cut to performance
But we still get RT in performance mode it's just less so. So really it's a best of both worlds situation.
But why is no one talking about the contrast in this game? It is WAY different from the previous titles. It doesn’t look right.
40fps really should be a new standard!! Such a perfect option for consoles giving fluidity whilst pushing the graphics.
Not all people have a 120hz screen sadly
I’d rather they make 60 the standard then increase graphics/res for a 40fps mode. I can’t live without 60 personally.
@@DTunezOfficial, most 120hz 4K TVs are expensive, but there are some cheap ones with 4K 120hz and VRR.
Hisense u7k and u8k has all those features for cheap now. My 55 u8k was 700.
@@jblaze600, I'm thinking of getting an OLED someday for my PS5, but I have to be careful of purchasing an OLED as they are likely to get burn-ins over time.
The new game plus update actually added RT reflections to car windows in performance mode! The LOD distance for trees was also increased.
They added a lot of RT reflections in the missing places as well. Looks like Insomniac devs do watch DF analysis videos.
They did a great job with all modes. I don’t have the 40 capable fps but 30 fps with motion blur is really well done for what it is
Those uncapped modes look like preparation for the upcoming PS5 Pro (and future 6)
What I don’t really understand - what would the difference be between performance mode (60fps) , and the 120hz turned on with performance mode and “smoothed” - wouldn’t those two modes be exactly the same??
If it was real 120, input delay would be near none existent. The lower the frame rate, the longer the input delay.
This is basically the dream for me at 1440p and 60fps and people are still not happy lol If games would run like this forever I would be happy with it.
Fidelity at 40 FPS with a 120 hz TV is the best way!
💯 feels good looks amazing
It’s this whole thing about running before you can walk. “Delivers graphical fidelity in an open environment”. So if they didn’t have an open environment, can they achieve higher fidelity? Why not have the best visual experience before we move towards open world? I still haven’t seen many amazing titles that blow me away without the open environment, and we’re already full forcing this having the culture “good enough” visually
This Game is going to play like a dream on PS5 Pro 😁
I miss the ps1, ps2 era when there were fewer people that know frames per second was . No youtube , no social networks and no digital foundryES. Just you, your console of choice and your monthly magazine(demo included)
Cant wait to play this game on PC with my Rtx 5090
60fps Performance Mode for me. Did try the 40fps mode and it’s OK but no increase in graphics makes up for the loss of fluidty. Combat feels so much better at 60.
40 FPS for 120Hz displays is a lot better than it sounds. Wish more games had it as an option.
It's really not. You need a minimum of 48fps to get any benefits
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 What? 40 fps mode only requires a 120 Hz display to be used. 48 fps is the minimum for VRR if low framerate compensation isn't used, but that's irrelevant for a locked 40 fps mode.
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271Why do you keep responding to people with wrong information? Like what is your problem?
Great video, Oliver. One nit-pick is your view that RT is reduced overall in perf-mode in SM2 vs SMR. We need to remember that the quality of the RT itself ( where both are matched up ) is significantly better and water retains RT which didn't exist in the remaster at all so it evens itself out.
I am still amazed how much RT can be optimised in Spider man Games, it may not be super fancy but it looks good.
Hey, it looks like someone finally releases a game that is finished. When was the last time someone released a game in good shape?
I’m loving the 30fps fidelity mode personally. I love having as much fidelity as possible and I can adjust to 30 pretty easily
Bro admitted to not using an HDMI 2.1 display 💀
@@jollama Ok? Is this really how low you stoop for a joke? Hdmi 2.1 is literally just a protocol for refresh rate, but I can still use the 30fps mode on it by switching off 120hz mode. Maybe if you spent your time on something more productive you’d know that, but since you don’t then “bro admitted to not using an HDMI 2.1 display 💀” since you couldn’t know something so basic.
Playing on performance mode and having a blast. I did however notice a little bit of ghosting in fidelity mode, but its still a pretty looking game.
This game looks fantastic and play great on my LG C1 83 inch. 120hz VRR mode is a game changer
In a console generation featuring hardware that is completely unspecialized for efficient ray-tracing integration, it's quite astounding how much coverage Insomniac manages -- and to sustain it in their performance modes puts many other PS5/Series developers to shame.
insomniac really is industry-leading when it comes to giving players performance options akin to those on PC you can tell the team really cares about the Spiderman franchise and really has outdone themselves other studios should be using this as a benchmark because Insomniac knows how its supposed to be done 40fps mode is the way to go with fidelity just enough smoothness with amazing visuals I hope this becomes an industry standard
I agree, I'm really looking forward to when this releases on PC, it's gonna look wild
The only thing that was a huge difference was how lively New York felt between the nodes. Most people aren’t even gonna notice the ray tracing while playing. I know digital foundry likes to look at everything to the smallest detail. For me when the amount of people and cars were cut that’s when i felt like the world was empty and not as immersive. Nothing makes you feel like it’s New York that swinging by and seeing so many people crossing the street and traffic jams.
Is it just me or the game looks softer resolution wise when compared to remastered even in the fidelity mode
Yes it does, it’s due to the more demanding raytracing.
We need a 60fps mode without ray tracing, with higher resolution
@@cristopher8186 I agree, while they should praised for the work they did a mode without RT would be great.
The difference between the graphical modes seem steeper than usual.
I've been playing the game with 4K - 120Hz using Fidelity VRR 40fps Smoothed. The uncapped seems like it would be great, but I'm not quite sure how much of the resolution drops using it.
Me exactly the same. I didn't find the answer to this question in the video above. I even wrote a query to the creators. They don't recommend uncapped themselves, and it's not clear why. If VRR keeps frame drops in check, why isn't it the best mode? What do we lose between smooth and uncapped?
As always, outstanding work Oliver ! And, as always SUPERB WORK INSOMNIAC - 40FPS uncapped vrr feels and plays like 60 with full rt and graphics - this is not your typical gamepass game that is released in beta state
Just started the game yesterday, did anyone else think that the graphics in the introductory fight were off ? As if there were missing textures and looked lower quality.
You know, now that i think about it, yeah. I don't know what it was but there were some sections that looked a little off, almost like base PS4, but it cleared up immediately when the core world opened up.
Yeah in some of the places the graphics looks absolutely trash. Especially on performance mode. But uh can't expect much from these new gen consoles.
well its literally a copy and paste of the last gen game with a different color filter so its not surprising
@@DeaconRazorblades thanks for confirming, yeah same thing, once the game moved on from that initial portion it does look better than the last game. Not a leap but definitely better.

I've been waiting for this breakdown, DF always deliveres
This game is amazing in all modes... i picked the 120hz (40 fps fidelity) its the perfect balance
I usually play 60 fps but I haven’t event bothered to try that mode because the 40 fps fidelity with Vrr smooth is so good. I also think it gives it a more filmic/cinematic feel while also being smooth enough on the eyes.
Vrr doesn't kick in under 48fps
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 That's what I thought. So why is everyone talking about Fidelity 120hz VRR Uncapped mode? Even in this video he says it goes over 40 fps uncapped...Doesn't make any sense.
@@BeHempy The game uses low framerate compensation. LFC duplicates each frame, so the output will always be above the minimum of 48 Hz for VRR to work. For example, 42 fps will be turned into a 84 Hz output, which is well within the PS5's VRR window.
@@PositronCannonAh. Any idea why on my LGC2 OLED it reports as 120fps in that mode, then? In performance mode uncapped it shows real time FPS like you would expect.
It essentially seems like in Fidelity 40fps mode the VRR option between smooth and uncapped does nothing for me.
@@BeHempyThat means it’s under 48fps anything higher than that will show.
Note: in the performance mode the frames drop like crazy when you start swinging at higher speed and go really high in the sky using the web wings.
Not really. It’s 60 fps vs 57 fps. It’s only 3 fps. The reason it seems a lot more is because of how frame times work.
