Years ago, my Pops got a pistol almost exactly like this one. It came packed in grease. 50 bucks. But, it was Chinese, 9mm, and slightly bigger. It even had a star on the grips in the same spot. It turned out to be a great little pistol. Very accurate and reliable, and it made a funky sound when fired. Kinda like 'VAPOWP!' He got pulled over by CHP one day while taking the deposit to the bank. 8 grand in cash and about a grand in checks. (We owned a pretty busy bar) the gun was laying on top of the bank bag, in plain site. The cop said that because there was a full mag in the well, that it was illegal, confiscated the gun, and cited him into court. Pops went to court, argued his case and won. But, they ruled the gun to be a 'nuisance gun' and kept it, 'to be destroyed'. I wonder who is carrying it now.

Actually, the star you are talking about is center mass on the grips
and not towards the top of the grip as in the North Korean type 70.
This is typical for older Chinese guns from the 1920's on.

No, they did back in Vietnam (even some guys smuggled back auto AK's and amnesty registered them) but that was the last war to bring back trophies I think. My unit went through Iraq and we weren't even allowed to take one of the golden plated Dragunov copies back for the unit's HQ display.

TheBic4 IIRC it is still technically possible to bring back certain firearms as war trophies. The issue is that it needs to be signed off on by the CO, and most of them don't want to go through the hassle so they don't allow their men to do it (thereby covering their own ass)

This is actually one of the coolest pieces I've seen on the channel.
It seems to me like there are actually some pretty good people in the North Korean weapons design industry. Given the limitations they probably had (caliber, very limited R&D, budget, materials, manufacturing facilities), it seems like they did quite a good job of making a decent gun.
As for the mismatched magazine, I wouldn't be surprised at all if it never had a matching one. I'd guess the gun itself and the mag were made at different factories or at least on different production lines, and it wouldn't be shocking in a country like NK if they just grabbed a mag and a gun out of stacks of both and slapped them together, or even if mags and guns were shipped separately and paired in the field.

      Jessie,
      to be fair.
North Korea did have a stronger industriall force above South Korea for decades after the civil war.
Weapon industry is probably rather well made and proficient, being a domestic producer of a smal pool of guns such as that one and their AK variants. So the factories they have probably make some really high quality goods since they have had decades to make them.
Plus, as I stated, North korea had a better economy than South Korea did for a long time. Eventually South korea got into the electronics market with top notch electronics and started rising ahead while North Korea lacked behind, but when they were both on an even technological level North Korea was actually superior. If they are superior today, that is arguable however. North Koreas isolationism did kill its advantage and now its economy is at best slowly advancing.
Heavy gear like weapons and the like are however something North Korea probably still do good in producing. Its not modern plastic rifles afterall, but metalic good ol' weapons which they produce themselves. South Korea imports and imported a lot of weapons in the past instead of making their own ones. Like American M16's and the likes.
I've heard they have some nice steel actually, but I've never actually got to see it myself.

"comically horrible infrastructure"? Don´t believe CNN propaganda. Korea was a "Japanese province" for almost a Century, and the North was actually the Industrialized part; South was Agricultural. So North Koreans actually inherited WW2 Japanese weapons manufacturing plants. Old style but very solid. It shows in their weapons. They produced 730 thousand tonnes of steel in 2020, not bad.

Also, I don’t know where this notion came from that the AK 47 is more reliable than the M-16, but it is complete bullshit. There have been multiple modern studies on the reliability of these rifles, and every time the M-16 comes out on top, The only time it doesn’t is when the study was conducted poorly.
Lastly, the M-16 was ahead of its time and it’s still used today in civilian use as the AR 15, it revolutionized the intermediate cartridge and the use of lightweight polymer. However, the AK-47 is exactly like all the guns that came before it. It’s just a automatic SKS with a shorter barrel and a bigger mag.

Interesting how the barrel moves. It may be intended to act as a sort of short recoil system. The barrel can move back until the bullet leaves the barrel, allowing the pressure to drop before initiating extraction.
I think that the "recoil buffer" in the barrel lug is to push the barrel and slide into battery. Without that part, the barrel and slide would just rattle back and forth loose. The main recoil spring only pushes the slide forward relative to the barrel.

North Korea is really behind on small arms technology. To my knowledge the most advanced pistol they use is a copy of the CZ-75. As for rifles their main weapon is the AKM, both Chinese and locally produced. They have been trying to replace the AKM with the AK-74 for a while now. Work in progress. Still though, just because it is outdated does not mean it is not effective.

Definitely a rare gun to find... hell I searched up quite a large amount of South Korean internet sites to figure out the history of it and I was not able to get any out of... one thing I found is that type 70 is based on FN M1910 pistol... and that is pretty much it. No history why it was made, used by who (eg. North korean spies used type 66 and 68 when they infiltrated South Korea in 1960's), and amount of distributions among the army.
I bet even after Korea is united together, the value of the gun will be high since the South Korean government would not tolerate any materialistic existence in North Korean era.(to prevent from people glorifying and worshipping Kim family) Good job on getting hands on the gun !

The reason that North Korea copied Browing M1900 is, that this gun played an important role in the history of East Asia nations, and was famous for its high quality and service behaviors. When those partisans who used this "good weapon" gripped power later, it's no strange that they wanted every pistol to be as good as this one.
The similar case happened in China, too. in 1980, factories produced a "type 80" full-auto pistol based on the originial concept of Mauser M1932, the full-auto variant of C96

I have another possibility for that little spring pin on the breach. It might be to index the barrel when the slide is closed, by putting a little bit of pressure to push it forward.
If it works it might mean that you can cut corners on the machining of the slide and barrel, lowering production costs, without hindering the accuracy of the gun.
It is also possible that giving it looser tolerances and having that spring would improve its reliability in dusty/muddy conditions (The AK effect).

This is interesting to see what a relatively low tech country unencumbered by patents can do. I imagine that thing is pretty reliable considering the simplicity. Also, with the locked breach design firing a .32 ACP round I imagine would be very tolerant of poor material quality and bad ammo. Seems like a perfect pistol for North Korea, honestly.

Very curious that they didn't go with a fixed barrel and kept using such a legacy cartridge so long. It would be neat to shoot and a cool piece of militaria to own! Given rare officers guns though, I would much rather have a Russian PSM with aluminum grips, that is a very cool gun! Wonder what the value of this Type 70 is and the PSM.

Seems to me to be based more on the FN Model 1910, also designed by John Browning.

I don’t know much about guns, but the internals of this thing look more like a lighter than a dangerous weapon.
Tiny little barrel and very basic.

I had M-1911-A1 made by Springfield caliber 9mm parabellum that look like my old Coly M-1911 military caliber .45ACP. I had my gunsmiths went over only my M-1911 Colt and it safe to shoot. The Springfield M-1911A1 look like Colt M-1911 but never test fire for safety due to my gunsmiths in CT pass away and I can not effort to pay for another gunsmiths.
