Ian, what you described as 2L in the serial number at 5:15 is translated as the letters RN in Korean Hangul. Presumably short for Russian. The Korean word for Russian is essentially a Korean Loanword. Google translate has it as pronounced "leosiain". I know you have its provenance well in hand, but I thought you might find the extra evidence of interest.

Hey Ian, love your insight into the production of these weapons. I'd be really interested to hear your insight into the design and manufacture of other objects someday. Say an Eames fibreglass chair or the plywood splint they made for the US army.
the auction link is nice, but I prefer to get my North Korean AK's the old school way, from a crate in a dimly lit harbour warehouse from a guy called Ivan.
Well...I am sorry to point it out Ian but the 'L' character on the serial number seems to be a Korean alphabet known as 'ㄴ', shown in 5:07. The two markings on the receiver stand for '련발' - Korean for full auto, and '단발' - semi auto, respectively. I - even a South Korean - have never come across a North Korean AK, most likely because if they were even captured, they would have been sent to military training centers or de-milled and put in museums. Thank you for showcasing this very rare gem!Jack the Gun/History nut.
“Not a lot of stuff from North Korea has made it to the United States” Mostly because they haven’t figured out how to get it here by way of ballistic missile
Honestly I think it's pretty cool that it has a different bolt in it then the original because that means the original soldier that had this changed the bolt out to a different one because it was broken or something... Adds to the story ya know
My favorite Kim Jung IL joke was on the day he died. A comedian newscaster was doing his fake newscast that showed a picture of Kim Jung IL to which he said: "Kim Jung IL? No, Kim Jung dead"...
50000 ? well my encyclopedia says it's more like 800000 pieces that were produced by the Jyn Chul arsenal, that seems logical since the north korean use it for their military even to this day. The type 68 (AKM) seems even more rare in their military
Here are the translations of the letters beside the selector. 'ㄹㅕㄴ' = '련' it's abbreviation for '련발' and it means automatic. 'ㄷㅏㄴ' = '단' it's abbreviation for '단발' and it means semi-automatic. And I think those first and second letters in serial number aren't 2 and L. I think those are Korean characters 'ㄹ' and 'ㄴ'
To anyone who's new... the characters on the receiver was ㄹㄴ7952 (L/R N 7952) and the other side is 련 단 which doesn't seem to have a solid translation on my behalf
"... and they would use western type numbers for ..." Those "western type numbers" you speak of are called "arabic numerals", but probaby originated in India.
James wrong western numbers are different then Arabic numbers western numbers were based on Arabic numbers but there are differences a simple google search would have taught you that
I love the way he says if you want one of these, you can bid at the auction, you'd think he was talking about a candy bar, your darn right I want one, perhaps the NFA help me out with that one!
I’ve got an original North Korean turd, that was smuggled out amongst a box of type 58 AKs. Bidding starts at $25,000. This could be the legendary turd from then President, Kim Il-Sung.
I know what you mean, and you are formally right. If I didn't sit here trying to avoid important work I would leave you without chipping in a argument: That is the name they gave themselves. Some countries are not called internationally what they call themselves. Also, when DPRK Korea calls themselves that, it is because they claim that they are Korea, and that there is no south Korea, but a occupied part of their territory. So In a way, DPRK Korea are wrong about themselves. They are in fact North Korea.
Little known fact: The "58" actually stands for the the era North Korea has been perpetually time locked in for the last half a century. #TheMoreYouKnow :)
If you find any Russian rifles that are graded in Arshins instead of yards or meters , the conversion is one arshin is 28 in or 71.12 cm. This is absolutely critical when sighting in at long range
Yeah the serial number is Korean, "2ㄴ7952 ㅁ" In English it's "2N7952 M". Next, 레" and "대" which is sort of like "lay"and "dyay". No idea what that means, the Pyongyang dialect it's different from the seoul version i know
Next to the serial number, the two figures on the left spell 'LN' and the one on the right spells 'P'. The 'selector' markings spell the words 'Lyeon Dan' which means 'training'.
It's interesting then that Americans, by all accounts, liked to self-arm with AK-47s, including Type 58s, in Vietnam, when they had guns designed 15 years later, in a first world country, rather than in Stalin era USSR or 50s DPRK.
Holy fuck that thing is crudly made! And I thought the K98 was crude. Norwegian Krag rifles (Except the stomperud) now that is a finely made milsurp. This gun is one ugly beast. (Not saying this is a bad thing)
Those aren't Western, Arabic or even Roman numerals. The serial number is using Korean characters, ㅁ or ㅍ. Which would be M and P respectively.. Why the FUCK would you think north Koreans would want to use English, Roman, or anything other than Korean? en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juche
Wherever they came from, the numbering system is called Arabic numerals and the judaeo Christian world (the west) used Roman numerals. Labels are just labels.
RonJohn63 I thought he meant the "ㅍ" that looks like a roman numeral, not the digits. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_numerals en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sino-Korean_vocabulary
Actually the classification does not list the first Kalashnikov rifle as an AK-47, only as an AK (the "47" being an addition made by the popular culture). So the series goes as follows: AK, AKM, AK-74 (yes, this time the number is an actual part of the name, which is used alongside with the GRAU index 6P20), AK-103, 107, AK-12.
Even North Korea can manufacture a better AK than Century Arms

I know you have its provenance well in hand, but I thought you might find the extra evidence of interest.

I once saw one of these for sale in Sweden :D
***** I have 2 machineguns myself, 3 AR15:s 8 suppressors Aks etc etc. Socialist paradise Sweden has better gun laws than many parts of the US. They are shit atm though.
*Best Korean type 58 AK
It's never enough talking about historical AKs! Cheers, Ian.
Hey Ian, love your insight into the production of these weapons. I'd be really interested to hear your insight into the design and manufacture of other objects someday. Say an Eames fibreglass chair or the plywood splint they made for the US army.
your videos are a treat, sir. a treat. as in like, I feel spoiled now. because I got to see all of this beauty, so thankyou, sir.
think I'm going to have to come back to this video every now and then, the humour is truely Seoul-less...
I'll see myself out.
your vids are very relaxing
I love this channel, I find it super relaxing, no offense but it reminds me of the show on pbs where the guy paints landscapes, anyway thanks
Bob Ross?
Korea also made milled receiver RPK's, from around 1964 to 1975.
Damn that Type 58 looks like it's seen a lot.
It has killed many political prisoners, and some innocent civilians along the way
@@tomsoki5738 damn that's dark

I actually got to hold one yesterday, it was an underfolder though and stamped. But it was incredible.
"The only AK that will ever jam"
AK 47 are shit, the ak74 is much better
That's amd-63
99% of the time the AK that's considered to never jam or anything is the AK-M or AK-74
@JGD when u get that black market ak that has been in 3 wars killed hundreds of people been dropped thousands of times and only cost 200 bucks
the auction link is nice, but I prefer to get my North Korean AK's the old school way, from a crate in a dimly lit harbour warehouse from a guy called Ivan.
Ivan is currently in Newark, he wants you to give him a call.
Is that bullet next to the auction house data shield for a Maxim Pom-Pom 37mm MG?
Yup.
How many North Korean weapons have you come across?
Only a couple.
Thanks for the vid sir.
The video is 9:22 long and is about an AK, 922r compliant... coincidence, i think not ;)
Illuminarti
i don't know how you do it but i start to have curiosity about any gun and you make a video about it. You are amazing!
“Not a lot of stuff from North Korea has made it to the United States”
Mostly because they haven’t figured out how to get it here by way of ballistic missile
Honestly I think it's pretty cool that it has a different bolt in it then the original because that means the original soldier that had this changed the bolt out to a different one because it was broken or something... Adds to the story ya know
Rob Ski is currently bidding. jk
5000 round test of Nork AK when?
There are AKs with breasts now?
lmfao ! good ol' Rob ski :D
Man milling that thing out of a block of steel would be some serious machine work
"The name is Kim Jong and I got the license to ill".....
My favorite Kim Jung IL joke was on the day he died.
A comedian newscaster was doing his fake newscast that showed a picture of Kim Jung IL to which he said:
"Kim Jung IL?
No, Kim Jung dead"...
50000 ? well my encyclopedia says it's more like 800000 pieces that were produced by the Jyn Chul arsenal, that seems logical since the north korean use it for their military even to this day. The type 68 (AKM) seems even more rare in their military
Thanks gun Jesus.
I love how the North Korean national sign is almost a pentagram... makes you wonder about them... 😂
Evil western propaganda. It is like cute starfish, like in Spongebob, our glorious leader's favorite show.
To anyone who's new... the characters on the receiver was ㄹㄴ7952 (L/R N 7952) and the other side is 련 단 which doesn't seem to have a solid translation on my behalf
"... and they would use western type numbers for ..."
Those "western type numbers" you speak of are called "arabic numerals", but probaby originated in India.
Those numerals were ultimately adopted by the West. Ian was technically correct.
James wrong western numbers are different then Arabic numbers western numbers were based on Arabic numbers but there are differences a simple google search would have taught you that
Well, I saw a forgotten weapons video and clicked on it, then realized that I saw it over at full30, but here it is, still playing.
kim jong un must be one of the dislikes.
No he showed it to his people, saying "LOOK at American pig GLAMOUR over Superior craftsmanship of perfect rifle made by our leader!"
I love the way he says if you want one of these, you can bid at the auction, you'd think he was talking about a candy bar, your darn right I want one, perhaps the NFA help me out with that one!
I want to see a review on the North Korean anti aircraft gun that you do political house cleaning with. If you get a chance...
lol what
well that anti aircraft gun usage for executions is just a myth
The news headline was just copy and paste by some "journalists"
^ video is not from North Korea
oh there it is. I therefore declare my former statement not valid
Oh gosh, that's gross but at least it's fast way to go.
looks like a very similar configuration to the old bulgarian milled AKs. Thanks for the vid Ian.
Very cool! Would love to know what it ends up selling for.
stand by. there will be a summary after the auction.
I love the way the wood looks compared to your typical AK
so, how did this gun come to the US ?
Great video like always
Vietnam bring back.
Whoever brought this to the us was a fortunate one
get it?
HockeyCrab No, but I'll give ya a like anyway.
fortunate son**
Ian probably got it from a NK soldier in exchange for a bag of chips and a soda.
I’ve got an original North Korean turd, that was smuggled out amongst a box of type 58 AKs. Bidding starts at $25,000. This could be the legendary turd from then President, Kim Il-Sung.
well the real name is democratic peoples republic of Korea or DPRK.
shit i just saw what i said below my comment nvm
Three lies in four words!
But they do not. The only vote is held by Kim Jong Un!
Even the 4th word is only half truth
I know what you mean, and you are formally right. If I didn't sit here trying to avoid important work I would leave you without chipping in a argument:
That is the name they gave themselves.
This is so strange. I have a replica Kalash (in Australia, doesn't fire, isn't a deac). I appreciate the detail, random spanish manufacturer.
Little known fact: The "58" actually stands for the the era North Korea has been perpetually time locked in for the last half a century.
#TheMoreYouKnow :)
I love this channel. Weapon's history is awesome
Is that ak full auto?
Yes.
Thanks Ian.
Did ian ever shot this rifle? forgotten weapons please do a video shooting this north Korean ak
He made a video of him shooting a Chinese Type 56 you can watch instead. It's not going to look any different, I can promise you.
Thanks for the tip!🤗
If you find any Russian rifles that are graded in Arshins instead of yards or meters , the conversion is one arshin is 28 in or 71.12 cm.
This is absolutely critical when sighting in at long range
Yeah the serial number is Korean, "2ㄴ7952 ㅁ"
In English it's "2N7952 M".
Next, 레" and "대" which is sort of like "lay"and "dyay". No idea what that means, the Pyongyang dialect it's different from the seoul version i know
Another great vid, you've been posting some really nice vids lately Ian.
Cheers from Czech Republic.
Kim Jong Un called, he asked if he can eat it.
Prince Deus the Vult that was a terrible joke
Jeep Ford Guy just like his rule
Next to the serial number, the two figures on the left spell 'LN' and the one on the right spells 'P'. The 'selector' markings spell the words 'Lyeon Dan' which means 'training'.
I would be willing to buy it for a million dollars but I aint got 50 bucks
Great Video! From what I've read in the past the type I AK had issues with the spot welding of the rails on the inside of the receiver.
“The North Koreans didn’t make that many of them”
They just didn’t have enough metal
It's interesting then that Americans, by all accounts, liked to self-arm with AK-47s, including Type 58s, in Vietnam, when they had guns designed 15 years later, in a first world country, rather than in Stalin era USSR or 50s DPRK.
Holy fuck that thing is crudly made! And I thought the K98 was crude. Norwegian Krag rifles (Except the stomperud) now that is a finely made milsurp. This gun is one ugly beast. (Not saying this is a bad thing)
Can’t wait for the auction
Arabic numerals, not western.
The west used Roman numerals.
West arabic numerals actually, east arabic numerals look quite different
Those aren't Western, Arabic or even Roman numerals. The serial number is using Korean characters, ㅁ or ㅍ. Which would be M and P respectively.. Why the FUCK would you think north Koreans would want to use English, Roman, or anything other than Korean?
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juche
Wherever they came from, the numbering system is called Arabic numerals and the judaeo Christian world (the west) used Roman numerals.
Labels are just labels.
RonJohn63 I thought he meant the "ㅍ" that looks like a roman numeral, not the digits.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_numerals

It's like if the Khyber Pass had high-quality machining capabilities
the reason why guerrilla forces love to use the Ak-47 is because they are easy to use, reliable and has very effective shooting
Unless a state lists "AK47 TYPE" and then it means that action and that caliber.
I seen a Noth Korean stamped version in Ramadi, Iraq 2004.
I don’t need it
I don’t need it
I NEED IT
I wonder how many copies of the AK there are compared to genuine articles.
I really enjoy your videos, thanks!
