Mod list to the volvo to be competitive :
    Engine:
Block mod to prevent cracked liners. At least 440cc injectors from focus mk2 rs. At least K16 focus mk2 rs turbo. Cold air intake. Bigger intake manifold. Bigger intercooler and bigger air charge pipes. Complete exhaust system. Tune. All of this will give you around 380 bhp and 500nm.
    Transmission :
Reinforced clutch. Limited slip differential. Stronger lower engine mount. Short shifter.
    Chassis:
Decent coilovers. Front strut bar. More rigid wishbone bushes. Adjustable rear sway bar. Better brake system. Lighter wheels. Decent tires. Maybe some weight reduction. Maybe some chasis reinforcements.
If that doesn't work, simply sell it and get the civic lol.
Good luck with the project. :)

Always liked C30s and bought a base model 2008 for my daughter and really liked it. I found one for myself - a 2013 R Design with every option except Nav. 16,000 miles, six speed in burnt orange - I may like the silver a bit better, but the orange is unique and stays clean looking all the time. Paid too much, I am sure, but I got the last year, highest optioned model and it even had an extended factory warranty.
Added an Elevate torque mount, down pipe, full exhaust, sway bar, tune and rear strut bar. turbo intake pipe and a bigger front strut bar. Perfect car. Quick enough to be fun, but keeps you out of trouble and practical enough to use everyday. Good luck with your project!

Ive owned a few cars in my time, the best car I ever owned was a Volvo C30 T5 (Polestar Optimised). Never was a Volvo fan, in fact I really wanted an Audi A3 3.2 Quattro but it was out of my price range.
Got the C30 T5 R-design for a good price, i didn't know much about it, i just liked how it looked. Man what an awesome machine it was and the funniest thing was that it was faster than the Audi 3.2 by a fair bit. Great car, great engine and incredibly fun to drive.

It's 2021 as I type this and the used car market is SO INSANE right now - chip shortage, supply and demand, etc... Anyway, I just bought a 2009 C30 R-Design with 75k miles and a factory Polestar tune (done when it became available at Volvo US) for $11k. Yes, I'm also shocked. One owner car with all records from the day it came home and it's certainly the cleanest C30 I've seen in the last year but...... 11k. God damn.

@San Pro Boy are you in for a Rude Awakening! Volvo’s DO NOT have Japanese reliability. Not even close! I have owned many Japanese cars: 2006 6 speed Acura TL purchased new. A 2002 WRX Bug Eye. That had issues but we all know that Subaru’s are reliable. And I have owned a 2004 XC70 Cross Country since new. She now has 140,000 miles on her. It’s taken a lot of work and a lot of $$$ to get her to this point. Shit on Volvo’s break that you didn’t even know was possible on “normal” cars!

I own a 2010 S80 T6 and a 2004 XC70 with the same 2.5 turbo plant, straight pipe, IPD tcv, throttle body spacer, poly engine torque mounts, k&n air filter and stage 1 sharkperformance tune, it's another car... being an extremely heavy car is surprisingly quick, capable of smoking any midsize sedan and even v6's camaros, chargers and mustangs. It's hilarious when my wife flies out of the green lights and kids in little hondas try to catch us. The engine notes with the typical turbo whistle are a joy to hear.

My 2009 C30 T5 R-Design has been a pain in the butt at some point, but i must state that it is real that the volvo community is really helping. but i must say, most of the problems i got were due to previous owners careless quick fix and bad garage repair done by seemingly oblivious mechanics.. find yourself a well reputed volvo specialist that knows about old volvos.. they're more invested in your cars well being and less greedy than the volvo dealerships. where I live, dealerships garage rates are 140$/hrs.. My specialist's rate is 65$/hrs.. and he knows more about volvos than the dealer does.

The revo knuckle suspension from the same generation RS can be adapted if you can find the parts to import (expensive new, but available). That will eliminate the torque steer and match the design of the type R front suspension. Also there are several running AWD C30s locally in Houston TX and it's not that hard of a conversion. Find Rich Forsythe at Volvo West Houston. He's built several and has all the kinks worked out. I have a matching color 2010 C30 so I totally support this project. Stay in touch if you have technical questions. I'm also a Volvo master tech and happy to assist where I can. (Also have a S60R powered 850 station wagon ;-) )

Hey, been looking to get a c30 as my first car for a couple of years now (didn't need one so earlier so decided to save the cost because of uni). Probably will get the 1.8 or 2.0L because the 2.5 is hard to come by and the insurance would be insane. But I just want to know what the ownership experience has been so far?

    • @JMichaelBreitenbach

@@__-fm5qv only had it for a few days so my experience is probably lacking.
I bought from the original owner and the Carfax showed a decent amount of dealer maintenance.
I do need to replace the lower control arms and will probably just do the full front suspension bushings and shocks just to be sure.
The US only received the 2.5 and most are pretty well spec'd
I will say it's a great size car if you don't regularly need 4+ passengers or expect huge storage.

_ _ in the UK they’re pretty fair about £6000 roughly around that mark and they’re pretty well maintained, funnily enough mate the insurance is pretty good aswell! The Focus that has the same engine and chassis would cost me £2700 insurance while the Volvo was £920!
      I’m 21 with 3 years no claims, so considering I pay £1000 for a focus 1.6 petrol, I think it’s very good!

I wasn't a Volvo fan either until they held a press event for the launch of the new XC90 and they grew on me quick. So quick that I got a 2013 S60R and I love it so much except for the fact that it costs so much to fix

Owned a 2011 C30, best/easiest handling car I have driven around the Nürburgring. You could convert this C30 to awd using S40 or V50 parts. Together with a gen 3 haldex it can transfer 50% to the rear wheels.

@@faerymum122 "The Saint" drove a P1800 coupe and not the P1800es. It was a '60s show made from 1962 to 1969. There was also a show called "The Return of the Saint" made in the late '70s with Ian Ogilvy reprising the Roger Moore role but the car in that one was a Jaguar XJS.

My friends dad owns Keystone motors Volvo dealerships. I had a 94 850 turbo and a 95 glt in highschool . Graduated in 96. My friend had a turbo 242 and his bro had a 242 Bertone with a 5.0. Volvos are the best. In the 90s, the 850 turbos were faster than most cars. The c30 isnt faster than a type R though. My friend had one when I had an RSX type s with bolt ons. The Rsx was a little quicker cuz of weight and no turbo lag. His c30 ran mid 14s. The c30 can be launched harder than a new type R I think but its heavy and would need drag radials and alot of tuning to run mid 13s.

Great car! My C30 still had the stock K04 Turbo, but could outrun the new Type R (stock) off the line, from a roll, and around any track. Would be more than happy to provide some guidance for your build if you have any questions! A few bolt ons and a tune and this thing will be there.

Although I drive a BMW - I have some mods for you to consider: -you can put some sweet big ass turbo on that freak - also a conversion to awd wouldn't be that bad - but maybe out of your budget LOL..(or wouldn't be fitting the Type R)... keeping it a FWD car.. To keep that a FWD you need to change the front sway bars and shocks, maybe the springs as well, then the domes and some rear sway bars or even the rear mounts with an adjustable trust and spring setting - to keep the bumps down LOL, adding some serious downgrade power with a wing too, in that case you'll need to adjust the power steering to be a bit understeered, so the car won't react that quick to the movements - basically behaving like an RWD car :) Clutch and any other parts in the power steering should be alright - just make it believe it's a RWD lol...
Oh but to be honest you'll want to tune it to put the most torque out front, but to behave like a RWD LOL - good luck :D

Loved the C30 and the design elements it harkens back to Volvos of the 80s and 70s, Take a look at the Volvo P1800ES with it's glass tailgate and the Volvo 480 from the 80s too.
I'll be following this build closely, good luck mate.

I hope you see and read this post, as i know a lot about these cars. To get 400bhp out of one of these requires A LOT of money and work. This does not share the same engine as the mk2 Focus RS, only the outside is the same. The RS has bespoke internals, turbo, fuel pump, injectors etc. The T5 S40/V50/C30 and Focus ST mk2 can be reliably tuned to around 300bhp on a stock turbo and internals, but even then you are risking cracking the cylinder liners if you don't improve oil cooling. And let's say you swap out everything from cams to pistons and get to 400bhp, then there is the chassis and suspension to think about. Again, only the base floorpan is the same as on the RS, but that's it. The RS has a completely different front end with its RevoKnuckle hubs, which do not fit the C30 (or ST) as bolt-on parts since the RS is 40mm wider per side. The RS's front suspension setup paired to the LSD it has means it torque steers very little. I have however owned a mk2 ST that ran just over 300bhp and it was still a joy to drive when i installed some polybushes up front and lowered it. I also tested a 350bhp(ish) ST that was running an LSD and coilovers, and it was fantastic. But still nowhere near as good to drive as an RS.

    • @Teribus13
      @Teribus13 6 ปีที่แล้ว

This is the comment I hoped to find.
When he mentioned 400bhp, my immediate thought was cracked cylinder liners. As you have said, the T5 in the C30 doesn't have all the uprated internals the Focus RS engine has, although they can be retrofitted at great expense.
For me, I think the 300-350bhp area is where to be, and then do the best chassis upgrades you can find. They'll make much more difference to lap times on a twisty track (like the Nurburgring, for example) than power upgrades.
