    Interesting story, Jarome Iginla was originally drafted by Dallas Stars, but they treaded him without playing a single game

      And Seguin trade wasnt really a shock. Seguin's antics off ice was really creating a rift with management. Something he's struggled with at times in Dallas as well. I mean, didnt the owner call him out last year? Seguin is a great player but too much of a "rock star", has that "me first" mentality. Which sucks because the dude has skill. But I wasnt surprised Boston traded him. I was more surprised at the package they got in return.

    As for Sundin, the Nordiques/Avalanche won the Stanley Cup two years after making that trade so it worked out. Also, they had Peter Forsberg in the system so they felt Sundin was expendable.

  • @Lonestarr022
    @Lonestarr022 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Quebec has Sakic, but also had Peter Forsberg, which is why the moved Sundin. The Clark trade led to them getting Claude Lemieux, and they won the cup in 1996. I think they are ok with trading Sundin away.

Also Carter going to LA somewhat gave them 1-2 Center punch and solidified them as a Cup Contender. In my opinion Johnson was pretty much done in LA and needed a fresh start elsewhere. Sundin was a great player, but you insinuate that it was a bad trade. Lefebvre was integral to the 96 cup for the avs, and Clark was traded for Claude Lemieux who was integral to the 96 Cup as well. Lemieux was then traded to NJ (helped them win a cup) for Brian Rolston, Rolston was part of the trade that got the Avs Ray Bourque for their 2nd cup. So Trading Sundin helped net the Avs 2 Cups, Sundin, like all Leafs, no cups. very worthwhile trade.

    What makes this trade worse;
    2nd round- Stolarz traded for Cam Talbot, who later signed in Calgary.
    4th round- Taylor Leier, who was traded for Justin Bailey who was never resigned.
    And Philadelphia never got to use the other 4th rounder.

    How about some old-school Red Wings trades (that mostly demonstrate how Jack Adams did more harm than good for the franchise)? Bucyk, Hall, and Dionne all started their careers in Detroit. Heck, even though the Wings got the best playing years out of Red Kelly, he still demonstrated he had plenty left in the tank after Detroit parted ways with him, being crucial in four Cup wins for the Leafs (knocking the Wings out of the finals twice). And Sawchuk had only played 5 full NHL seasons and was at the top of his game when Adams decided to part ways with him. The Wings got him back after a couple seasons and ended up having several more productive years from him, but that initial trade reportedly really hindered Sawchuk's morale for a while. Insane to think the Wings had both a young Sawchuk and a young Hall on their roster, and parted with both of them in the span of a couple years.

    In 1986 Vancouver traded Cam Neely AND a third overall pick for Barry Pederson! When Neely got to the Boston Bruins he immediately became a point-per-game player and spent the next 10 years as THE prototype power forward. Yeah, that was too soon...and too much.

      We can thank Tom Barrasso for that trade. He was notorious for torturing young scorers who embarrassed him in practice.(Which Naslund did) Tommy B did the same thing to Aleksey Morozov a few years later. Since Tommy was Mario's golf buddy, Craig Patrick kept Tom and by extension Mario, happy. Barrasso was a completely shit human being as a teammate.

      He could have done an entire list on players the Oilers gave up on too soon from 1995-present. He could easily have done 14 such players and still had tough choices to make on who to include and who to leave off. With moves like they made, is it any wonder the Post-Gretzky Oilers struggled so much?

    Some of the trades that come to mind made sense because the teams got something great for it. Owen Nolan for Sandis Ozolinsh is 1 that comes to mind, Chris Pronger being traded when clearly he wasnt gonna stay anyways and the dying franchise needed a star to fill seats.... But then you look at 1 like Adam Oates, that trade nearly destroyed the Red Wings, who had finally made the conference finals in the late 80s and then went back down a peg till the mid 90s.... Imagine Adam Oates playing his entire career with Detroit. They literally got NOTHING for him, NOTHING, 2 aging dudes that were about to retire. And Oates had like 13 prime years left in him? And went to 2 finals in that time on teams that has never made the finals once in their existance? Yeah. Detroit,,, they coulda won so much more. Common theme in Detroit with all 4 of our teams.

    Still think the Naslund trade makes the least sense. If they had taken a flutter on Stojanov and offered a veteran or two in the hope that Alex might rediscover his junior form that would be an understandable gamble. But offering a young and exciting talent for another young player who had had a brutal start to his professional career one for one was just plain daft.
