Prius the most underrated car ever. I have a 2021 base prime and love it. I drive to Tampa 4 times a week and get 135 mpg. 50 miles round trip to Tampa for me, I’ll drive in electric mode in city traffic and then switch to hybrid mode on highway

We have a 2015 third gen and I always thought it was pretty ugly but seeing a fourth gen next to one I'm rethinking that opinion. That said we're 235000 miles in and my first major repair of new shocks/struts just took place. Still on the original brakes. Reliability is absolutely unmatched.

I bought a 2013 prius for car camping. When you lay down the back seats it lays almost flat, perfect for sleeping in your car. The gen 4 prius the seats don't lay as flat. Also it's lower to the ground compared to the gen 3. So if you go a little off roading you will scratch all the trim panels.

I car camped in my 2013, traded it in with 257000 miles on it and no problems for a 2018 prius. I wasn't easy on it either, but did get it serviced regularly. 70 to 75 mph fully loaded all through out the west. I tent camped though, didn't sleep in it. Still averaged 46 mpg. My 2018 has 100000 on it fully loaded I average 52 or more depending on temperature. Couldn't afford to travel as much as I do if I had to use my 2009 f150 4dr 4wd at 12 mpg lol
My seats fold flat, I take the headrests off. It fits all my camping gear for my dog and I with no problem. Even when there are 2 people and the dog, there is no problem. This includes 2 foldable solar panels and a 650wh battery pack.

I have fond memories of a renting a Gen 3 Prius in New Mexico, it was awesome on gas. Got to drive it from Albuquerque towards Gallup, then up to Santa Fe (Where the LX press drive was) and back around the Duke City. Still think the styling was way better executed than the current one while still being quirky but non-descript. For intensive purposes, I think if I HAD to buy one, I would just get the XLE for the moonroof.

Loved my 2015 Prius. Passed it on to my daughter when I got a 2020 Camry LE Hybrid. It's a nicer car, but sometimes I really miss the liftback. Stickered at just under $30k and paid $23,600 (in Kansas City). No one is getting that kind of deal right now. Glad I bought when I did. I'll likely get something new around the end of '23 or early '24 and pass the Camry to my other daughter. I really hope the market has gotten better by then.

Toyota overtook GM for best selling brand in the U.S in 2021. However, until recently Toyota had a stockpile of " chips " not enjoyed by other manufacturers and it has pretty much gone through that stockpile. For the foreseeable future Toyota will have to dial back on their production and consequently they will raise prices. Don't expect a reprieve until at least late 2023/early 2024.

I just purchased a 2022 XLE with most options. Got it for $500 under msrp btw. The seats are the most comfortable I have ever sat in. Could definitely drive cross country no problem. For some reason mine didn’t come with the blue stitching which I thought was weird because there were 2 other XLEs that had it. The a/c controls are so much better than my old one. Large toggle switches work so well. The acceleration is definitely quicker and more effortless. The engine barely hums when it’s on and it feels way more electrified at all speeds. We also have a 2020 TLX and I think I like riding in the 22 Prius better already. We always have a TLX and a Prius so I’m basically the perfect subscriber for your channel. Haha!

03:20 thanks Kirk for recognizing that the NiMH and LiON batteries on Toyotas do go bad (it takes time, but they do go bad ) and that the fuel mileage on the ICE engine is NOT as good once the NiMH starts to go. We've seen this for years since the late 90s and early 00s with the batteries going bad and the customer complaining that the cars NO longer get near as good MPG as when new. New battery pack can be UP to $5000 with pack and labor and materials. Just so we're clear, the solar roof only runs a vent fan to cool a hot cabin. It does not run the AC to cool the cabin.

The Corolla Hybrid is a little less expensive and gets basically the same mpg. The Camry Hybrid is faster, safer, slightly worse mpg, and just a little more expensive. The RAV4 Hybrid gets a little worse mpg, is a little more expensive, is faster, and most importantly much safer.

You keep mentioning safety as if it's the new Ford Pinto lol. A couple points:
      1. The Prius has a 5 star crash rating. You could argue the current gen is pretty ugly, but safety is not one of its drawbacks.
      2. The rav4 has a higher center of gravity which makes it more prone to rollovers. Bigger isn't always "safer".
      3. 25 years ago the Prius would've been considered a perfectly fine midsize option. The only reason you perceive it to be "unsafe" is because of America's unfortunate obsession with ever larger SUVs and trucks. It's a race to the bottoms fueled by cynical car marketing to soccer moms who feel compelled to buy hulking 4wd land yachts to go rock climbing at their local costco.
      4. By your line of reasoning, we should all be driving hummers, or semi's, or tanks! Then it'd be so much safer!
      5. Some of us actually prefer sensible, efficient, compact cars instead of crossovers or SUVs. Not everyone has 5+ kids or is lugging a ton of crap everywhere.

@@randy2558 The TNGA-F platform holds up better than the TNGA-C in real world crashes. SUVs, CUVs, and wagons are inherently safer in crashes because of their design. They need to bring out a TNGA-F Prius V with AWD standard. The Prius and Corolla do not provide adequate protection from larger vehicles roaming the streets in my opinion. The RAV4 is not a rollover risk. Those issues were corrected. The safest vehicles on the road are small to midsize CUVs. You don’t have to drive a Hummer to be safe, but you don’t want to be in a Yugo either. I saw a 2020 Ford F-350 HD pickup with a flattened roof after a rollover.

Perhaps I’m in the minority, but I’ve just never cared for the 3rd gen Prius. If I had to find something nice to say about it, at least the 12v battery is easier to replace than in the earlier models. Regarding the 4th gen, Toyota somehow managed to make it look even worse after the refresh than it did before. All in all, if I was FORCED to buy a Prius, I’d hold my nose and begrudgingly drive away in a 2nd gen.

      There's a few reasons.
One being climate. If you live in a rather cold environment with a hybrid or ev that doesn't keep itself warm.
The second being climate again, living up in the mountains and needing real power or AWD like some of my friends.
The third is costs I suppose. If you can only afford a 5k car then getting a hybrid in that price range is a recipe for disaster.
But otherwise, no! Hybrids are great for folks who don't have the infrastructure or lifestyle for charging!

More recent electric cars should be using heat pumps rather than electric heat, so I would imagine that only budget hybrids would still suffer here. For the third point, yeah I think I saw it costs the mechanics at least a grand to replace a Prius battery with a refurbished battery. anecdotally the people I know who have bought Toyota hybrids have all had a good experience with the engines well into the 100,000+ miles range.
