Maybe I'm crazy but I've always felt houses should be designed with removable wall panels or something similar at key points of the home for easier maintenance.
Absolutely love the video. Chuck your demeanor really comes through on the video, quite entertaining. I think I would have to pay you to be able to work for you...really reminds me of one of my mentors. Much appreciated. That being said I have the same problem. Nobody wants to cut a hole but water has clearly leaked onto drywall. This needs to be removed and thoroughly cleaned with bleach and allowed to thoroughly dried before reassembling so it doesn't get moldy. I get what you are trying to do but if the boss is right and it has been leaking for 25 years it needs to be addressed. I love the comment about inventing something, and I have. You will not like it but it needs to be done. So what I did was to create a template with half inch 5 ply plywood. Then I use a 1/8th inch drill bit to make sure where the studs/joists are and mark them carefully. Then I use my drywall router against the template to cut the drywall just inside the studs/joists. It helps to wear the tyvek suit and respirator and have an assistant (not the boss) with a shop vac sucking up as much of the drywall dust as possible while routing. Other dust measures need to be taken which I wont go into detail about to prevent it from getting all over the house, you can use your best judgment how much work prevention is worth compared to clean up. With this method the template not only serves as a guide for the drywall router it also holds the piece up on the ceiling so it doesn't fall down. It takes two people to remove template and drywall piece cut without breaking. Then after everything is thoroughly cleaned and dry you attach pieces of 2x4 flush with face of existing studs/joists using 3" structural screws predrilled with the 1/8" bit. The you reinstall the drywall pieces you removed and or the access door for the future conditions depending and you call the guy to match the texture and paint. A good painter/texture guy and no one will ever know that a hole was cut in the ceiling and you will have the peace of mind knowing it was tested for leaks when it was open and any potential mold issues remediated. It is a lot of work to do it correctly, and even less money will be made to do all the extra work but IMHO this is the way, the right way to fix it correctly and efficiently. Please let me know what the boss thinks of my prescription. Thanks, G

Just watched the video. Great job! I have a similar problem where the water only leaks when the water is or has been running. Going to use all of your tricks and tips before cutting a hole in the ceiling. 😳 I’m guessing mine is the drain seal as well as slight as the leak is. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for video. I am the mom and the plumber so I appreciate both sides. Can't get the tub drain to budge so can I silicone around the edge inside the tub? Thanks for making it seem easy.
Came across this video today, doing similar job of diverter to handheld sprayer in tub only. Was a nice good laugh after failing to get my plumbing project done. The sprayer leaks a little, but the tub was not draining fast enough after last weeks house PRV replacement. Plenty of water pressure now. The boss was standing in 3 inches of water after shower. I don't have all the parts yet for tub, needs new diverter spout. Increased flow and drain needed adjustment, its fine now. I feel your pain. She is wanting to know if her shower is in service or not. I feel an access panel coming for this setup for a permanent showerhead. The handheld is suction cup mounted, it better not fall off and hit her in the head or I wont be hearing the end of it.
CB I’m new to your videos but diggin em. I’m a plumber also so it’s good to get a different aspect. Gotta love shower leaks and customers (or wife lol) that don’t want you to cut any access lol.

I love you made it a family video lol..my wife just hollered and said stop watching TH-cam and get the dam shower fixed..she replied youtube is not google stupid.. 🤣🤣..we have a leak come from bathroom shower above the kitchen and it's leaking during showers but not when taking a bath..also did all that caulking stop you leak?
How old was the putty around the drain? I'm wondering if I should be looking at doing that. I had a leak around a stand up shower. Same issue, no access. I caulked around the handle and big ring around that. Also modified an overflow gasket to go behind it because the original gasket had a tear and didn't look like it was sticking any longer.
So what did you do about the water spot? I had a similar problem. The upstairs bath is used exclusively by my wife. She always took baths. One time she decides to take a shower and water leaks onto the ceiling below. I have access to the back of the faucets. I can stop all the leaks. My plan is to cut a donut out of a thin rubber sheet, fit it over the supply pipe and glue it to the tile. So how did you fix the water spot? I have this foot-diameter spot surrounded by an orange ring.
Thanks for all the laughs! I'm wondering if you all planned this video out. Anyway, I am having the same problem I am a little confused about the fix though as it seems like you disregarding the problem with a leak from plumbing on the other side of the wall which seems more likely. The drain plug seems like the most likely place. Would a bad cartridge cause a leak to your ceiling? Thank you again. Excellent April 1st video!!
@@ChuckBarron Hi Chuck. I did what you did in this video and it seems like it is holding so far. I did cut a trap door hole in the next room to get closer to see what is happening. The only thing I am a little upset with is to get the nut removed on the shower valve off with some Liquid Wrench I needed to apply quite a bit of force and the valve is not vertical now but it still works and doesn't leak. I'm thinking if I try to straighten the valve it could cause the little tubes to crack. Thank you Chuck! Keep up the excellent videos.
Hey Chuck thanks for the video. We have a drainage a leak upstairs from the tub that leaks into the bathroom directly downstairs. My first comment is I think my wife and your wife are the same. I mention cutting a hole JUST to see where the leak is coming from and she said no and we should get someone to look at it and find where its coming from. Laughed..Out-Loud..For Real! Perfect Plumber/ Boss Lady dynamic. Your wife is hot. Keep that in mind as you work on your new fixture removal invention.
Mr Plumber, you should invent something to solve the leak. One thing I don’t understand is- the problem was not there until I had to call you. Now you are saying that you have to cut the wall? No one said that for 25 years, everything was fine. Come on!
As a woman I gotta say this ... cut the ceiling if you have to cut the ceiling, but you had better fix it afterwards so I can't tell that's what you did.
what I don't get is why someone with no Knowledge of the issue can ask completely off the wall questions and demand an answer with a straight face and we are compelled to give them an answer and educate them.. Why do we put up with that? We are the ones that know and we are the ones that can fix it and we rule and that is THAT!
hilarious. If i had to guess i would say that;s gotta be a new jersey, long island, maybe Connecticut accent and rough around the edge comments? Am I way off?!
Chuck Barron hey! Dallas, TX. Thanks for the share on the leaky faucet. I’m having issues with a old 80’s shower. Leaking from under the pan on to my concrete slab. Oh CB1 I feel your pain. No plumber has the time to explain the job and the knowledge required to anyone who doesn't have the first clue. People just don't get. That's why it takes years of learning to know the various setups and installations.
That was my better half I gave the boot....lol
ya, I was LOL !
That’s a perfect example on how to never make money on service calls. Customers like that will never stop complaining with problems.
No money here. my own with my Mrs. lol
Hahahahah def feel you brother!!!!!
Laughed..Out-Loud..For Real! Perfect Plumber/ Boss Lady dynamic. Your wife is hot. Keep that in mind as you work on your new fixture removal invention.
lol...so hot. She is my queen.
Dad was a plumber. He told me water runs down hill, payday is on Fridays, and don't lick your fingers. The old school guy.
Holy crap.. That's me and my wife when I have to fix something.
The are awesome plumbers....just ask them....lol
Mr Plumber, you should invent something to solve the leak. One thing I don’t understand is- the problem was not there until I had to call you. Now you are saying that you have to cut the wall? No one said that for 25 years, everything was fine. Come on!
😂😂😂 Wives always think they know more 😂😂😂
Yes. They do.....lol
Love this video!!!
Fun Fun Fun...not so fun for marcy. ha
oh my god i am having the same problem on the ground floor
Just too funny, sounds like my wife. :)
oh they are special when it comes to cutting holes in there house....lol
As a woman I gotta say this ... cut the ceiling if you have to cut the ceiling, but you had better fix it afterwards so I can't tell that's what you did.
ha....leak was fixed.....no damage....im so pro...lol
Awesome movie
Yes it's for water to drain out
Deep is on it.
This was classic! 😂👏🏼
Ha. Ms Marcia.
Who is Pat? And why is he working on your pipes?
Brother Pat.. The man, the legend. Resting in peace now.
I go through the same shit anytime I fix things at home with my wife too
Cut a hole in the drywall, handle that tub business, then patch up the drywall. Good to go
Wifey was not having it. lol
Yes that is a drain hole in case water is trapped behind the escutcheon
learning the little things. No ego here. ha. Thanks Jay
9:08 - 9:19 F*CKING GOLD!!!
lol....i just watched again....
You're done! Here comes the dumb questions. lol
lol..ms. marcie...
Boss says NO!
boss lady on it.
I finally had to replace my tank to bowl gasket, leak got so bad my trash can could not catch the water anymore, Oy Vey.....
I hate when that happens....lol
what I don't get is why someone with no Knowledge of the issue can ask completely off the wall questions and demand an answer with a straight face and we are compelled to give them an answer and educate them.. Why do we put up with that? We are the ones that know and we are the ones that can fix it and we rule and that is THAT!
Its my wife....lol...ha
Chuck you forgot your crystal ball to look through the wall
lol!! and dont forget the Yes Dear! Anything for you..ha
hilarious. If i had to guess i would say that;s gotta be a new jersey, long island, maybe Connecticut accent and rough around the edge comments? Am I way off?!
South Jersey....lol....where you from pierce?
Chuck Barron hey! Dallas, TX. Thanks for the share on the leaky faucet. I’m having issues with a old 80’s shower. Leaking from under the pan on to my concrete slab. It’s a tiled shower not fiberglass surround. A hole in the wall confirms it’s not my mixing manifold or pipes. Maybe old grout? It’s not the door because the water is a puddle that grows from beneath. Searching for answers! Thanks in advance!
I’m lucky I get to cut a hole but it’s covered by fitted cabinets👍🏻.
oh man. good luck.
CB Silicone works best for tub spud on all tubs .!!
Yes Sir....I cheated and used phenoseal....another good brand...been using for years
"not making any money today.." LOL. Hopefully you made a bunch through YT.
Damn I love this. I feel your pain friend. All from your own wife 🤣🤣😂
oh we know this pain very well. ha
"Wet spots" on the ceiling, can turn into a cringe worthy nightmare on some service calls.
no doubt.
Suffering the same thing now. House built in 1989
Poor water on tub apern of tub and see if it's running out from shower door trim .
Ya door good. I was in there after the shower used and that hot corner was good.....you know the one....the 3rd base of tub leaks...
Put a painting over the wall!
Wall art.....thats what a hole is
Those fussy customers whose husband worked on the problem before are the worst.
I am.......that was my mrs......lol
