  • Suspect a leak from the bathtub overflow? Not surprised, it's actually a common leak on older bathtubs. The complaint is "water leaks when I take a shower" or when the tub is filled beyond the overflow.
    There is a gasket that sits between the overflow pipe and the back of the bathtub. Over time they'll dry out, crack and develop leaks. A little tricky to do, but with some basic tools and materials you can stop that annoying leak and may not have to call the plumber.
    A leak from the bathtub overflow? Check out the video to find the correct fix and discover some new techniques that could make a tricky repair go smoothly. I'll leave links in the description below for all the products featured in this video.
    Happy Plumbing.

    When replacing the gasket you can avoid the pipe falling back in the wall by temporarily reinstalling a retaining screw in the hole and using it as a handle while maneuvering the gasket in place. Those replacement devices are really clever in the way they devised a work around the original set up. As always, a great presentation.

    BlueVue Overflow Gasket was the best $28 I ever spent. Cheap traditional gaskets disintegrated at 10 years and again 10 years later. Both times ruined my ceiling. And I have NO connection to BlueVue.

    Hold up Bob, I notice all your parts are new and look to be the latest. I'm a woman first off, so if you want to discount my comment go ahead. But when I took off my overflow plate there was no bracket behind it. (I have a 14-year-old tract home in central AZ, the water here is full of calcium and minerals because it comes from the Colorado river) The screws that were supposed to hold that bracket that comes in the change out kit were completely disintegrated into the holes, plus as I said before the bracket was not installed ever that I know of. I bought the home when it was seven years old. And I watched another video where the woman is doing a simple change out. In the kit that I got at Lowe's, sold to me by a retired plumber, didn't know or didn't mention that the washer is not included in the kit. And I was not about to try and pry out that old washer taking a chance that I may further screw up something. So here is what I did, I took a brand-new tube of 100% silicone caulk and ran a bead around the inside of the hole on top of the old washer which was still somewhat pliable, so if water were to get behind the plate it hopefully will just drain out the bottom of the plate not behind the wall. It's a one-piece fiberglass tub and shower, that they put in before all the walls go up when building the home. I'm considering just leaving that bracket out again, putting the new plate up, and doing a nice small bead of caulk at the top half of the plate. I do beautiful caulking work. Here's my beef, usually when people are changing out plumbing it's because of a complete remodel where the craftsman can access everything or because something has gone seriously wrong. My case is the later. I broke off the turn off valve because it was leaking and that stem is plastic and it broke off. I'm not a weightlifter, I'm 71 and not that strong, it just broke off. But this is my point, you should account for things being old and not the latest. and maybe suggest some fixes that a DIYer can do, rather that show the latest all new stuff. Thank you for letting me bitch, it comes naturally for some women. And I hope my fix made some sense and will keep the water out. The whole job has been a real pain in the fanny and thank God I had a younger gentleman roommate who has been helping with the process. I guess you guys are good for some things. Not a hater, still love men!

    Hi Bob, on the new watco stopper what do you think about using plumbers putty instead of silicone?

    • @BobsPlumbingVideos
      @BobsPlumbingVideos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The silicone is going to allow it to adhere to the existing strainer. Plumbers putty is a good sealer, but it's not permanent like the silicone

    @KenNYC212 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    All instructional videos say to install with the larger beveled side down. But when I pull my old overflow pipe and elbow forward from inside the tub, if I place the gasket that way, there is clearly a MUCH larger gap at the top than the bottom. If I turn it over and install the other way, when I pull it forward and screw it down, it clearly makes a much better seal with the gasket touching the top and bottom of the hole evenly. Is this the better way to install it in my case, or would there still be some reason you'd want to "force" the large gap at the top closed by tightening the two side screws even harder?
    (My tub is slanted very slightly with the bottom inward a tad more, but clearly the elbow is angled also so the bottom touches first.)

    • @BobsPlumbingVideos
      @BobsPlumbingVideos  14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I would leave it where it fits best. All tubs have varying angles and a lot depends on how the drain was plumbed. If it fit better by flipping the gasket around, then that's where I would leave it.

  • @zagmek
    @zagmek 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So if I have access to the back side of the drain access panel in adjacent room), would it be easier to work from that side?

    • @BobsPlumbingVideos
      @BobsPlumbingVideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Without a doubt! I get lucky sometimes in that the back of the tub is on the inside of a closet, I make my repairs and install access panel in case of future issues.

  • @crushedwrist

    My overflow has a metal pipe and is slightly to the right. When I tighten the screws, the plate tilts down as I tighten. Do you think replacing it with this would help?

    • @BobsPlumbingVideos
      @BobsPlumbingVideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If that overflow pipe is off center, there's little chance that it'll straighten out. But you won't know if you don't try, the plate will set you back a couple of bucks. Worth a shot!

    Hello Bob... I made the mistake of making my Tub Overflow Tube to become wobbly. I had snaked into it without it being secured and as a result i see that it has become wobbly to the point that I feel it needs to get tightened. As I look down through the opening I see what looks like a nut that the overflow tube goes into. Is that where I can re tighten the overflow tube? Thanks.

    • @BobsPlumbingVideos
      @BobsPlumbingVideos  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there should be a 1 1/2" coupling nut and washer which hopefully will move. Sometimes they get frozen in place and won't budge.

    So, when you unscrew the plate, you have to pull on it and the linkage will come out?
    And to re-place you just feed it down after you replace the gasket?
    Do they sell new linkage and is it universal or do you have to get the name brand?
    Also, what happens if the gasket has clips, how do you clip them on the overflowthrougg that small hole?

    • @BobsPlumbingVideos
      @BobsPlumbingVideos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you remove the screws you should be able to pull straight back and the linkage will come out along with the plunger. Reverse the process when re-installing the linkage and plate. You could find aftermarket linkage kits, but the plungers are manufacturer-specific. I would reuse the existing plunger and connect the new universal linkage or use that Watco System along with the Blueview gasket and be done with it. As far as the gasket with the tabs, you just have to maneuver it to the best of your ability & if you're having trouble fitting it, cut the tabs off!

    Hello sir. I have a new install in an upstairs bathroom. When the water in the tub reaches a certain level, I get a leak downstairs coming from the tub. When the tub is not filled too high, the problem does not occur? Access from behind is not available. I have not cut open the downstairs ceiling and tried to replicate the issue yet. Just curious as to what you believe is happening ? Please help thank you !

    • @BobsPlumbingVideos
      @BobsPlumbingVideos  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If the water level goes above the overflow and you're getting a leak, or it leaks when taking a shower and water splashes onto the overflow plate I would use the BlueVue external gasket kit (16:58) to eliminate that issue. Just performed that for a customer this past week. Link in description.

    My tub is very old. I have access to the back from a closet on otherside of wall. I removes overflow and the tub is rusty on back side. Do i need to stop rust with rustoleum or bondo? Or is the putty sufficient to create seal where surface is not smooth because of rust

    • @BobsPlumbingVideos
      @BobsPlumbingVideos  ปีที่แล้ว

      Is it a steel or cast iron tub? If steel go the rustoleum / bondo route. If cast iron, lightly sand wipe with lacquer thinner and then plumbers putty.

  • @rockriverash3120
    @rockriverash3120 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi....I like your video, my problem though, is that I can't push the drain overflow piping back far enough to get the gasket in. The people who installed the overflow apparently had the same problem and just put the gasket on the front side, inside the plate.....which explains the water in my basement when someone uses the bath. I'm not sure what to do, as you said to be very careful pushing the drain back. I would have to apply a lot of force to move it back enough to install the gasket, if it's even possible, there's not much give in it.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!
