Nobody ever went to Los Vegas Hotels to listen to classical music, but for decades they paid some very good money to hear this. They heard Mozart, Bach and Beethoven, Gershwin, and yes Chopsticks too. Showmanship, a charming personality, and glitter can accomplish miracles.
When people ask how do you play the piano with all those rings on? Very well indeed! He was a genius on the piano a true showman and a one off! There will never be another Liberace!
There will never be another another Liberace or Elvis ever again!!! Love the 1984 interview where Lee tells Letterman and shows him his first meeting with Elvis in 1956. In fact they were good friends until Elvis untimely death in 1977. RIP Gentlemen and may you both entertain in Heaven Forever. Bravo!!!!!!
I I agree with u betty saw him live in 1956"when I was 12 now I am 77,:his music my wonderful daughter and my wonderful friend and lee s music keep me going since I lost my wonderful husband two years ago xxxx
Liberace used to do three shows per day in Toronto. He played at the old O'Keefe Centre on Front Street (now the SONY Centre). The concerts usually went on for 10-14 days. Lee could be seen in the days off visiting antique shops looking for something to add to his collection.
Beautiful costumes. Flamboyant of course he bloody well was. And he entertained me for many years, and thanks to u tube I can still see him every day. I will never get tired of watching a master at his trade. I don’t think of you every day, but I will never forget you. RIP.
@@yc2877 Johnny Carson asked him that and he said it don't bother him because he was taught to play with lead weights on his fingers ....... like how a runner puts weights on his legs to build up muscle .
Thank You for uploading and keeping Lee "ALIVE!" For all to see and appreciate. He is inspiring, nothing around right now that I know of, which serves the purpose of displaying precision, artistry, improvisation , and sheer joy of playing piano music.
You are exactly right. Liberace represented a time in American entertainment when nothing but the very best and exceptional perfection of one's craft was the standard for all performers. The mediocrity that passes for entertainment today is a total joke. This guy practiced and honed his skills for hours, weeks, months and years. A true Pro in every sense of the word!
Nunca em minha vida,eu com 88anos Nunca assisti um espetaculo desses.E de arrepiar os cabelos do corpo inteiro.Para eu,esse Liberace é do outro mundo.Estou até chorando.
Brilliant pianist. Marvellous showman. He truely loved his audiences. Child prodigy. No music, no lessons, I don’t think people realised how brilliant he was, he made it look so easy. I’m glad someone has saved his house from decay. He would be so proud. Mustn’t be forgotton.
Agree! Rediscovering him this year. So talented, so beloved, so kind, so giving. Practice, practice, and more practice. Studied the music sheets, created his arrangements, put his heart into it. I truly love this man. Of note is the lawsuit his sister and others made against the estate, handled by his longtime attorney, Joel Strote, with a last will done within the last two months of his life. The plaintiffs lost, and Mr. Strote did as Lee desired, that everything be sold and the moneys put in the scholarship foundation he had started some years earlier for students of the performing arts. It continues to provide scholarship for students. This is what Liberace wanted. Still loving and giving.
Founded in 1976, Forty-four years ago! Liberace stated, “A lot of good things have happened to me in show business and I want to do what I can to give others just starting out a career boost. I hope the Foundation projects will continue into the future to offer gifted newcomers financial help, and in many cases, artistic exposure as well.”
Liberace inspired me as a teen! I worked hard to learn to play an interpretation of his "Twelve Street Rag" and "The Beer Barrel Polka". My piano teacher urged me to appear on the Wilkins Amateur Hour in Pittsburgh PA back in the 50s. The problem for me was "stage freight"... I wasn't able to "drum up the nerve". Smile...
im just amazed at how well he played without any sheet music..he could play anything..and all by memory..he was and is the best that there ever will be...missed by many for sure..a true talent and showman
You just mean gay right? Cause flamboyance is kind of what show business is all about, in one form or another. Having said that, lot’s of the worlds best artists have been gay. It really doesn’t make a difference unless you want it to.
@@opaljk4835 I resent your inference. We all assumed he was Gay but that didn't stop him from being a great performer. I saw him in person. He was marvelous .He made himself famous by the way he performed. Being Gay did not make a difference. He was flamboyant because of the costumes he wore & the act he perfected
Liberace was a revolutionary of classical music. He created his own tempo, patterns on classical hits that common people and sophisticated people recognized and instead a concert was an spectacle were he was the attraction. He knew how to sell him well.
Those first chords that he enters with at 1:01 are so epic. In the orchestra original, they form a quiet, gentle motif, but played with a muscular energy on a piano, the effect is majestic and heroic; although Liberace adds the arpeggios, I think he plays it as written in the famous Shultz-Eveler Arabesques (also the basis of the "Tom and Jerry version"), with dynamics similar Josef Lhevinne's approach. It starts out on a B-flat dominant 7th chord, resolved with repetition on an E-flat chord, the "heroic" harmony heard in the Neethoven Eroica Symphony and Emperor Concerto, so the effect here has a similar majesty and glorious power. Just those few chords almost make me tingle; but with the grandiose costume, and lighting of the fountains, the effect musically and visually is glorious. People may say "tacky" but here he catapults out of it into "glorious," at least for those few moments.
He held the record at the Holiday Star Theatre in Merrillville Indiana. Buses from Michigan would come with his woman fans. He would have a meet and great after his show and sell souvenirs. He would clean up and yell" Send em in!"

When it was announced that Michael Douglas would play Liberace in Behind The Candlelabra, I didn't think that Michael Douglas looked at all like Liberace. But in the thumbnail for this video, there is something about Liberace--I think it's the eyes--that looks like Michael Douglas--regular Michael Douglas, not Michael Douglas as Liberace. It might have to do with plastic surgery. I've noticed that those procedures give a lot of people a look that is similar to each other. Michael Douglas is good-looking and looks like his late father. Love Liberace's style.
Often imitated but never duplicated

He died and we never see another like him the only one liberace 🥰🤯
I was very late in discovering Liberace. But he was an absolute genius! He also seemed like a very lovely person. Very sad he's gone.
I love him beyond words. Wish he were still here!
It is a pleasure to see the Great Liberace, his talent, his sympathy, his joy, very American

Never, in his wildest dreams, did Johann Strauss ever imagine his music would have come to this.
Is that a good thing or a bad thing?🤔
I was always amazed at how he played like he did with all those heavy rings on. He was an amazing pianist.
Very well in deed when asked lol
Probably had very strong fingers because of how long he had been playing
I’m a singer and the only time my hand has been crushed in a handshake was by a pianist

Formidable pianiste et enchanteur ...super, merci.

Even though he was flamboyant. He could play the heck out of that piano
He had a good technique but in most shows you can tell he didn't practice enough:)
I don’t see how him being flamboyant or possibly sexuality has anything to do with talent but yes he’s a fantastic pianist.
Does anyone know where this beautiful piano is today?
