    Must have been a relief for both you and Hurley when he made it back home after those 10 mins. Lovely to see how bonded he is to you.

      I did think ..what have I done! He kept staring out the window..I think he just wanted to experience the outside for real He doesn't fly away at all now (at the moment). It is a risk....but our bond is even greater now.

    I know that 10 minutes must have been very frightening for you. But don't worry with these pigeons. They come back unless something bad happens to them.
    Hurley is the BEST BOI! He will come back!

      @@pigeontrix I remember this one evening I was flying my two birbs (they fly REALLY HIGH) and out of nowhere this storm hit us. My babies didn't return home that evening.
      The next morning they were back!!!
      One of them had a bit of fever (literally). So, I took a paracetamol and broke a VERY VERY VERY SMOL piece and fed it to her. She was fine 😁😁😁😁😁❤️❤️❤️

    i wish to do this with my pigeons but im terrified of them not coming back/getting attacked. my very first pigeon whom i had for like 10 years flew out with his son but he never returned....

      I think many factors have to take place. Hurley is bonded to me..but he also has Pigeon female company. The Pigeons also need to map the area in which they live...Hurley had been kept in for two years..so had time to view from the house and his flight. Also helps if bonded Pigeons are nesting..as this give them good reason to come back. Yes..it is a risk with Pigeons. I'll be honest...I never wanted to let any of mine out...they mean the world to me...but...some Pigeons are born to fly. Not getting proper exercise was bothering me. I hope and pray my decisions don't come back and haunt me.

    Hey brother, I also keep pigeons much like you do seemingly. I don't race or wish to race them, or take them away from home and release them, I just like to have them as my little friends. And I would like to let them fly. I'm close with them also. I have four. Only one has been let out, my boy. He returns. On one occasion, after 2 days but he returned. The girls I haven't been brave enough yet. I've given them a soak and sit them on top of the loft, they are full adults and strong on the wing, so I would get them wet to hinder them from taking off, and not feed them the day before, and also bring them out close to sun down (food time.) They just hang out then come inside when I blow their whistle. But they haven't been flying. My boy i started flying when he was young. Do you think it's risky business with birds that are already adults? They're not fancy breeds by the way. I found each of them as youngsters who fell from nests I couldn't reach to put back, so I kept them and made a coop.

      It is a tough one...Its always nerve racking letting Pigeons out for the first time. Mine have always been young..so they were used to the situation. Like you, I have lost a couple for a few days..but they came back..and now are some of my best birds, flying wise. I think you are doing the right the steps...so its just a matter of letting them out to see. If you are not confident...then don't do it. Every day I let mine out, I run the risk...but I really belief Pigeons should fly..or at least get good exercise..that's what they were born to do. I wish you all the best.

    Do you have hawks or other predatory birds there?

    • @pigeontrix
      @pigeontrix  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately..yes. Our biggest threat locally is Sparrow Hawks...My Pigeons don't fly high enough for the Peregrines...and the Common Buzzards are lazy around here. I'm always around when they are out...and they are never out for long periods.

      @@pigeontrix last year I had mine out for a bit while I was cleaning up. A hawk got her I'm not sure how she escaped but she flew back after like 3 hours. That was a super emotional event. Now I always go out before her now and look around before letting her fly. She wouldn't even go outside for a few months after that incident. We have sparrow hawks, cooper hawks, red tail and a couple other locals. Also Raven's which she very afraid of to. I can say without a doubt she's the coolest critter I've ever had as a pet. They are so funny and loving little things. She's mostly white so spring and summer she sticks out like a sore thumb. Wouldn't give her up to own the world. Thanks for your reply to.
