What should I feed my pet pigeon?

  • Hello Friends!
    I want to share with you my thoughts and my research on the matter of "what pigeons eat". I decided to split this topic into two parts, otherwise the video would be too long :D
    In this part I wanted to show you what components make a healthy diet for a pet pigeon. Despite common belief, you are not limited only to seed and grain mix from a pet store :)
    In the first part on this topic, I showed how little we actually know and how much we wrongly assume about what pigeons eat. Here's the link if you'd like to explore :)
    • Do you really think pi...

    I own a pet facility and a pet store. We sell our own pigeon/bird foods. We make sure to mix seeds that are rich in vitamin and nutrients for pigeons and doves. We also sell baby pigeon feed that's rich in protein, vitamins, and healthy fat for birds. We are now working on perfecting tiny pigeon coats with a tiny ID card pocket and that will not mess with their wings and feet.

    Please Google what to feed your doves and pigeons for more info. Scrambled eggs chopped up finely are good for them as a treat once in a while. Not too dry but not too wet. Just moist enough so they can swallow it easily. I feed mine mostly seeds. But they hate sunflower seeds but some might like them. Also, small bits of easy to swallow fruits. Not the fruit seeds and not the core or the skin of the fruit. They also LOVE the little seed of Millet spray. And if you have a laying female, make sure to include calcium supplements too. But this video is a great tutorial and a good resource. Thanks for posting. I learned a lot. And thanks for sharing that beautiful girl with us! She’s a pretty pigeon girl!

      Hey M J! Thank you so much for watching this video. I really appreciate your time and the comments....I did see your comments on my Pros and Cons video! I really value you being proactive on my channel! :) And I apologies for not posting anything sooner.
      Let me try to defend myself on the matter of salt and eggs..... in terms of Millet, I know that it can be a treat for parrots :) ... but both my birds don't eat it :D And they definitely would not do a trick if the reward would be millet hahah. But you may be right, may be some pigeons will love it :)
      In terms of salt. I will have to respectfully disagree, and say that it is essential for pigeons. Salt is important to the point that even pigeon pellets have it as an ingredient along with a bunch of other added supplements. But, as I mentioned in the video, it must be given in the way so that the bird would not get too much of it. To back up my argument, I recommend you to read a book by Dr. Zsolt Talaber "Vets' Tips for Fanciers" - I reference this book a lot. It covers a lot of "problematic" areas and actually is written by 5 avian vets from 5 different countries. I trust their knowledge and experience.:)
      In terms of scrambled eggs... yes, I heard that some people do give boiled\scrambled eggs with no spices to their pigeons. However I did not see a single mention about that in the avian vet's books. Therefore to stay on the safe side
      I recommended not to give it to pigeons :)
      But you said you have doves? how long did you have them for? Do you keep pigeons?

    Pigeons in the wild actually DO eat insects in the wild. The extra protein is good for them and essential if you're wanting to breed big and healthy birds.

    • @mylittlepigeon278
      @mylittlepigeon278  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Sarah! :) Thank you very much for watching my video and for your comment! I really appreciate it! :) The extra protein is always good! :D But for pigeons, it wouldn't be in the form of insects. In the video "Do you really think pigeons eat that?" I tried to show the reasons why I strongly believe that statement. I even filmed my pet pigeon eating an insect that looked like a seed, but spitting it out right away, as she realized, it's not a seed :D However, as I mentioned before, I'm not an ornithologist.. so I may be wrong :). If you have a research article on that matter, a book or may be a video of pigeons eating insects that you can share with me, I would absolutely love to see them! I'm not opposed to admitting that I am wrong and adjusting my video accordingly :). But until I see a legit proof that pigeons indeed eat insects, I will be holding my ground and advocate that pigeons don't eat insect and don't need them for a complete diet .

    Hiya! I’m glad I found your channel. Your videos are easy to watch all the way through and your editing is really cute. I don’t have a bird yet, so I’m soaking up all your knowledge. Just some questions maybe you can address in some upcoming videos. Why does Toby have an ankle bracelet? Is it from the veterinarian like a dog tag? Can birds get micro chipped? Do they play games? Do they eat houseplants? What do I do with my bird if I have to go out of town? Can someone else come stay with my bird? Thanks for creating this content. You’re doing a great job and I look forward to more videos.

    • @crumbleass
      @crumbleass ปีที่แล้ว

      The ankle tag is a "bird band" and it usually helps to identify a bird by its birth, or a code registered somewhere with information about the breeder. In some cases people can customize a band to have the bird's name, address or the owner's number on it, although it is not that common that people do that weirdly enough. Microchipping is also an option, though very expensive! I don't know too much about to be honest.
      Personally I have phone numbers on mine, since they're not registered anywhere and pigeons as house pets isn't common at all where I live either.
      With house plants, i would say keep an eye on them. They will inspect and "taste" everything within their reach; even if it could be getting their tongue stung with a cactus, or accidentally eating a highly poisonous plant.
      They also most likely would like to dig around in the soil.
      With that I just put big pebbles on top of the soil of the plants thats within my birds reach, and then that problem is solved.
      I believe you should think of them like cats, in the way they like to mess with things!
      With traveling: i am still yet to figure out myself! But since I have a pair instead of a single pigeon, it definitely makes it easier for me to leave.
      Pigeons are highly social creatures and they also mate for life, so being separated from their "flock" or mate can be very stressful for them!
      But as I said, I'm still trying to figure out how to travel while I have my birds. Thankfully I found an exotics/bird vacation home in my area where I could potentially put them while I travel.
      Otherwise an experienced bird petsitter could be a good option too.
      I hope I was able to help a bit with some of your questions!

    Hi, since it's summer now, i've been wondering if you could make a video about how to deal with the seasonal changes with a pigeon ? (When it's hot or cold, what has to change so the little guy doesn't get sick)
    Also, what would you recommend about travelling? If I found a hotel that'd accept pet pigeons, would the pigeon accept that or would a petsitter be a better option ?

    • @crumbleass
      @crumbleass ปีที่แล้ว

      Pigeons are very hardy birds so change of the season is nothing threatening for them, unlike a tropical bird. Just make sure it doesn't get any cold drafts from a window that it can't move away from (I assume your bird is indoors?).
      You could also install a bird safe heatlamp if you are very concerned, but generally there shouldn't be a problem with them adjusting to the seasons. Still offer them baths/showers even in the winters aswell.
      With traveling; i am still questioning that one myself!
      A pet sitter would of course be optimal for the pet, but I also understand the appeal and feeling of security because the bird is with you, instead of a "stranger".
      I think it all depends on how the bird would be left when you arrive at the traveling destination; will it be in the hotel/rental all alone for hours, or taken with you everywhere you go? How much will it get to be let out to stretch its wings? And will it get enough social interaction to stay happy. :)

    Especially with the vitamin d and calcium in mind, due to theyre indoor birds and one is a female. I'm just curious if its even needed? My birds aren't the biggest fans of fresh greens and sprouts, nor is pigeon pellets available where I live.

      Avoid hatching it yourself, as it could lead to aggressive issues. Its better to adopt one that has been raised and properly socialized with other pigeons, so it understand personal borders and such things as to be a proper pigeon.
      Pigeons (purely) imprinting on humans often result in a very aggressive and "single person loving" bird, and although that sounds nice and tempting, it is only a bad spiral for you.
      They will get jealous just like parrots do when they get very attached to one specific person, and attack anyone getting close to their favorite person. They will also experience great distress if left without their favorite person, as they most likely chose that person as their mate.
      Overall it CAN work for some people, but often a mate for the bird is the best option if you're not able to provide for the high demands of being a house husband/wife to your pigeon lol.
      Also keep in mind with what would happen if you have to travel somewhere, a sudden hospitalization, not-at-home day jobs, etc. The bird will most likely be alone for a lot of hours, which is not optimal for such a social animal, whom also takes their mate to stay together for life! consider getting a pair if possible. Hope I was able to help you a bit :)
