Pigeons really are the rats of the sky. So misunderstood and often mistreated. They're both such intelligent and sweet creatures but people always think they're dirty and dumb. Watching you train this little guy is so fun and cute.
One of those mean ignorant soulless devils who think that way poisoned my special little buddy yesterday. I had raised him from a tiny baby that fell out of the nest. He was happy healthy and strong, not to mention smart. He came in the house and 30 minutes later he started having convulsions and puking green and purple. I picked him up and he died in my hands. I've actually saved 2 othere because I got to them in time, but I was too late. Words cannot express my sorrow over losing my little pal and my contempt for the haters has increased by a factor of a thousand. It's personal now
@@ajayjackson7727 I think it's because of the perceived comparisons between them, such as being dirty animals that spread diseases (when they're both really clean when domestic), stupid (when they're both very clever, especially Rats) and unloving vermin (they are both very loving) affectionate
Well, pigeons really aren't that bright. Compared to more intelligent birds they certainly very very low IQ. But they're still fun birds and lovely in their own ways :)
For anyone who's interested. Look up project seahunt. They trained pigeons to find people lost at sea and they were in a dome under a helicopter. And they have also been used to screen for cancers :)
No, they haven't been "used for screening" of cancer, it was an experiment to see if pigeons can learn to recognize the images. It wasn't about cancer, it was about pigeons.
Im a new pidg mum and she is the most loving adorable intelligent girl. Dont know if you realised but i think 4.10 in when he chose the pentagon shape in the board you said to him it was wrong, he then went to your hand and touched the red shape saying no this goes there. Hes so handsome my angel is butterscotch and cream colour

while they are rarely succesful physicists, they make excellent brave little warriors, they seem a very good combination of careful / considerate and passionate in everything they do! Hello, I would like to know if there is a problem raising a pigeon alone without a partner? Is a partner helpful or a hindrance in training? And is there a problem with raising 2 males or 2 females together, in relation to training? Thanks!
If I was raising a pet Pigeon for training..then It would be alone..and hopefully bonded to me. They make great pets as well as great students. If I was going to introduce another Pigeon ( as a pair) then I would train another...and introduce them at a later date. Training two together would be hard work..as they would focus more on each other...but once both trained..they could work together well. In four years of doing this...I have found females to be better for training. Males after a year start getting in to show off mode...and less enthusiastic...So my choice would be two females.
When I'm not at home..Hurley has access to an outside flight, where he gets plenty of natural light and sun. When he's indoors, he will let me know when he wants to bath. I now use a cat litter type tray for him...and its just water...nothing else. All my birds love bathing and staying clean.
i'd love to have a pet pigeon, I have plenty wild ones in my balcony. but how do you deal with poop? I know pigeons don't like poop pants nor I would like to bother the bird with it. have you trained yours? how? was bird already tamed once you got it? thanks
@TheShift_OfEnergy Alrhough you see the odd video of a Pigeon pooping in a human toilet...the reality of it ..its not real long term. Pigeons pooh every 15 mins and a bit longer in the evening's. I have boxes of wet wipes everywhere...and we clean as soon as we notice a dropping. Pigeon droppings are not as bad as Parrots..a healthy Pigeon will drop a small oily ball...very easy to clean up .
Lol..yes..I know what you mean. I still think its better than Parrot waste though. I think with mine, it about every 15 minutes..I clear up as we go along.
I don't think they will be as smart as some Corvids (especially where tool use is concerned) ...or clever as some parrots. It would be very difficult to train a Pigeon to ride little bikes ..or place pennies into a little piggy bank, etc ...Pigeons have the best memories though..they can count...differentiate between the alphabet letters..colours, etc like other birds. They really do excel with images though..some recalling up to 1800. Pigeons have been trained to tell the difference between some of the great artist (Monet vs Picasso). Feral Pigeons have also been trained to tell the difference between benign and malignant breast cancer slide images. And the list goes on. I virtually taught Hurley to recognise his own image amongst two other Pigeons in just a couple of short training sessions.. One day..they maybe top dog amongst the bird brains.

They are beautiful creatures. All species, including humans, look awful if on the streets and starving.
em...they're not rats at all, they're birds! i can't stand people who call them rats

It's so cute when they do that:)
I love how he's pacing back and forth, so excited, while dad is trying to teach him this new game, lol
He's talking bcos his grumpy, he wants his treaties!! ❤
Pigeons are so much smarter than they get credit for.
So true! Their intelligence rivals dogs and they are still called dumb!
Their innate personalities + demeanor just gets in the way, lol
It's so strutty and "i'm a queen" type of attitude they have
He was already celebrating his victory before starting. ♥️
Beautiful pigeon! Pigeons are the most underrated of all animals for intelligence and character. They make fantastic pets.
He's gorgeous. Pidgeons are such lovely birds

And that's why pigeons are smart birds. I love them so much. Your pigeon is so talented.
Smart boy! I really appreciate the approach you take so that we can try to train our birds too. 🥰
He has a good learning curve. Keep learning !! 😊
This is really cute and cool! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for sharing! I love watching animals learn! Exciting to watch!

What a good sweet little boy❤❤❤
I'm teaching mine to sort colors in about the same way! She gets frustrated and then attacks the treat bag but the progress is slowly gaining.
that's right, it goes into the square hole
such a smart and healthy fella

Great! I love Pigeons.

how old was your pigeon when you started teaching him the tricks? what are you using for treats?
Hurley at the time was eight weeks old when I started to train him. The treats I like to use are sunflower hearts.

"How I trained pet Pigeon to recognise shapes"
Dude thinks pigeons can't recognize shapes, but he can teach them to do it.
