    Cables, cables everywhere, even in my home studio. A couple of months ago I bought a package of six different COLORED XLR cables which I thought was brilliant. Easy to track down where cables are going with just a glance.
    The other thing I can offer is a way to reduce the noise on cables. I live in a tropical climate (Thailand) that is very difficult on cables. The connections deteriorate quickly in the heat and the humidity (this affects all equipment; uncoated guitar strings have to be changed after a few weeks). I keep a can of fast-drying contact cleaner handy at all times and will spray and wipe connections when I make them. If you have a noisy cable try cleaning the connections, this fixes things most of the time.
    I wonder how many cables I own? Way, way too many. I do buy adhesive hooks (3M) that are easy to hang on walls and I'll hang the most used cables on them for quick handy access around my workstation.
    Oh, one final tip, and I'm sure you've run into this. When I find a cable that is screwed up for whatever reason, throw it away immediately, just get rid of it so you're never tempted to reuse it and waste more time on a damn cable that's broken...again. Thanks, Pete. You're a treasure to the GB community.

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pete! This is gold!! I live in a dry climate so don’t have as many issues but these tips are excellent. I too have used those 3M hooks in the past (before painting walls - never quite got them hunt back up!) and use Velcro one wrap for cable ties.
      Love the advice about chucking the dodgy cables. So many times I’ve hing in to broken cables thinking I would one day magically Keane how to solder and fox cables. It ain’t going to happen! Let them go!!

    Hey John! So helpful - thank you. I've been making my way through all your home studio videos! Quick question: when you say that regardless of the connection at the end, an XLR and a TRS send a balanced signal (12:18). I'm wondering how this works with the fact (I think lol... from what I've gathered through your videos) that a TRS cable can be either balanced mono, or unbalanced stereo. Can you shed some light on this? Thank you!

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there. Yup. An XLR to TRS balanced cable can only carry a mono signal as XLR is used for mono balanced audio only. A TRS to TRS cable can be used for either balanced mono or unbalanced stereo (like what a standard headphone jack uses).

    @4:35 Using 1/4” to RCA cable or adaptor @10:05 to directly connect a keyboard output into a RCA input in a amp, wouldn’t that harm to the instrument or the amp?

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the type of input/output. Generally RCA/TS will send a standard unbalanced signal. The main potential issue would be sending a signal that’s too hot for the device receiving it, so always ensure volumes are right done when starting out.

    hey pete, i'm in an acoutsic trio and we're looking to record some home covers to send off to bars and post on our page and we want them to be live. We have a berhinger x2222usb as our mixer just as a heads up, we typically use 8 channels when playing live. Would you recommend using a USB mic connected to our camera and record the audio through our monitor (so w can use a mix we would use when playing live)? Or if you have another way which could also work!
    We want to be able to set it up quickly and have not too much post editing to work with so we record batches of songs at once. Keep up the great content, I may have further questions about this new iphone too!!

      Hey there. So, I would actually go more for an audio interface connecting via USB as I show in this video - th-cam.com/video/Sc-_LiuqiRA/w-d-xo.html
      You wouldn’t even need a full blown interface like these either - in fact Behringer make this interface specifically for sending audio form a mixer to another input device. amzn.to/2VSfHfI

  • @voidprism_studios666
    @voidprism_studios666 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So I'm trying to connect my audio interface and monitor speakers. I'm using the Steinberg UR12 which looks like it can only connect to the interface through RCA. And Presonus Eris 3.5". Meanwhile the speakers can use TRS balanced or RCA cables.
    I can't seem to find any dual trs-to-rca cables online. It's only TS to RCA or the TRS to RCA only has one trs input.
    From what I understood @4:30 the best way to connect these is to use DUAL TS-to-RCA even though my speakers support balanced TRS?
    What cables would you recommend?

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. Unfortunately the UR12 has only unbalanced outputs and RCA will always be unbalanced. So RCA to TS or RCA is the best you can do.

    This is just great stuff Pete! Need to ask a question, is it possible to connect an amp head to an interface or an iRig? Reason is I want to play live using the tones from my amp (Gallien-Krueger). If so do I need to use a XLR to TRS cable from the direct out of the amp or TS from a line out? Thank you!!

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there. Yes, if your interface has a line level input then you can do this. Even an iRig or an interface with just an instrument in may work okay - just keep the levels really low and gently bring the gain up as there can be some unexpected spikes in volume that can potentially cause issues.
      I haven’t used the method much but have mic’d up my actual amp a few times - th-cam.com/video/suypipF4vOU/w-d-xo.html

    Hey Pete, I´m trying to follow your advice to use TRS cables on L and R outputs of the audio interface towards the speakers. I have a Steinberg UR 242 that allows for TRS/balanced L and R output, and speakers with mini jack entry only. Is there any reason why there are no TRS to TRS Y cables? All Y cables seem to be TRS to 2 TS.

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So, when using TRS as a stereo plug, as in the case of a mini jack (3.5mm TRS) socket, the extra ring is used for the second stereo channel. Therefore 3.5mm connections can only ever be unbalanced by design, similar to RCA. This is the reason you will only ever find TS to RCA and TS to 3,5mm cables. Hope this helps and makes sense.

    • @VictorTorres-iy5hd
      @VictorTorres-iy5hd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PeteJohnsMusic Thank you! Now I get it. I was assuming the 3.5mm TRS would be balanced just because was TRS. Swiped it from a system tying my PC monitor to my TV screen, so now that's down until i can round up a replscement. Pretty sure I just boxed up a few cause we never need those any more, right? Right? And the monthly electronics swap meet is on lockdown. Aaaaaarrrrrggggghhhhh!!!!!

      Yeah. I hear ya! I have an entire shelf with boxes of old cables. Every time I think about turfing then I think “maybe one day I’ll need...” 😄

      @@PeteJohnsMusic Yep, one large box just for old guitar cables. The old ones were better quality and I used to fix them when they'd go bad, but now my eyes are bad and my hands are shaky, so I try to avoid soldering. Guess i should chuck 'em but they're like old friends by now. LMAO

    Can someone tell me if I can connect a a rca cable with a sing trs from a subwoofer to my studio speaker? My subwoofer only has 2 rca hookups. Can I hook it to a single trs hookup to my speaker?

      Not quite sure what you’re looking to do here sorry? Depends on the outputs you have on your speaker or interface/mixer. studiolivetoday.com/cables

    I thought I'd die laughing when you talked about "plug your thing into your other things.." 😂😂😂 But more seriously, what with USB interfaces becoming so popular, it really is sad that they removed the nice 1/8" stereo or twin 1/4" stereo inputs that mixers have always had, to plug in audio from MP3 players, Cell phones and Tablets. The "Line Level" inputs that many of them have, won't accept signals from such devices; voltage is very different. Maybe the industry wants us to keep buying mixers, *plus* add USB interfaces to the shopping list! So I'm staying with a mixer like my Mackie ProFX6V3 which has a 2 in, 2 out USB connection. On my Christmas wish list for this year is the new Mackie Onyx8 with 4 in 4 out USB which has just been released but not available for purchase yet.

      Yeah I hear you. The little a Behringer UCA222 is a handy device to have around for capturing stereo signals.

      @@PeteJohnsMusic I owned a UCA202. Gave me such terrible sound quality, I put it in the trash...🙄 It was what I used to connect my earlier mixer, ProFX4V2 to my laptop. Awful product.

      Hi there. The only way to do this is to close the app before going back to the main GarageBand screen, as this is when changes are saved to your project. But you will lose ALL changes made since the last time you closed your project.

    reading your replies to questions below one time you answered Jatin verma with "RCA is only ever unbalanced."
    then to the same person on another question "RCA is an a balanced connection as it only has a single wire."....
    so I am a little confused, was there a typo in your replies? or is my interpretation wrong? thanks

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably a typo. RCA is always mono and unbalanced by the nature that it is a single signal. More details here - studiolivetoday.com/cables

      Thanks! Yes, it’s a fine line between talking too fast and not wasting peoples’ time. I am always learning and finding e balance. Don’t forget you can turn the speed down in TH-cam.

    Mabel are you able to make a table with cable and is it a fable that you are unstable OR did you marry Hector for his big connector and was it Doug with a lovely plug who kinda looks smug who thought it risky to take a slug of his whiskey and ( hic ) make a mess of his TRS and reverse his car over Mabe's XLR which played naughty, tricks eh ? on her four channel mixer and led to disgrace for her interface which was all over the place and said to two faced Terry O i love you in stereo,can you play the piano like Donno in mono. Dunno,let's socket and see.....stay connected.
