What's the difference between a TS, TRS and TRRS cable?

- How to tell the difference between TS, TRS and TRRS cables, and what each are used for in the home studio:
TS = Tip/Sleeve - mono unbalanced cable used for instruments, speakers
TRS = Tip/Ring/Sleeve - mono (balanced) or stereo (unbalanced) cable used for line level inputs and outputs (mono) and headphones/inserts (stereo)
TRRS = Tip/Ring/Ring/Sleeve - stereo (unbalanced) + microphone cable, used for smartphones, tablets and laptops.

Thanks for this very clear explanation❤️🇵🇭
Hey man. you really helped me out trying to trouble shoot why a ham radio 3.5 mm jack didnt work as it was a ts connecter and as it turns out I was trying to use a trs jack. saved me a lot of headaches so thank you kindly
Bro!!! Why can’t all TH-camrs be so direct and educational!! Well done!!
Cheers my friend.

@Anthony Weiss Stole my comment, so I can only say Ditto! hahaha
Well done @Pete Johns
Perfect. Thank you. Just spent hours asking people I knew for help on how to record from a device onto my phone and nobody could help other than tell me to get a computer. After enough googling I decided that I needed a TRRS cable, but didn’t know why and wasn’t totally sure that it would fix my problem. I went to guitar center to buy one, and after searching for a while with an employee, they looked it up in their system and said that they didn’t have any in stock, had never had any in stock, and didn’t ever plan on having any. They could order me one, but it was on backorder and it literally wasn’t worth waiting around for it because they’d had other stuff on back order for 3 months. I came home feeling pretty hopeless, but figured I should to more googling/YouTubing. Found this video and YES! I know exactly what I need, exactly why I need it, and it’s only $10 on Amazon. Just ordered it and should be ready to record on a scuffed iPhone setup by the weekend. THANK YOU!!!
Very glad to help my friend. Thanks for watching and taking the time to to provide feedback.
My God! Man you saved my life. For the longest time I was wondering why I was getting sound only in my left ear when connecting to an audio interface, I had the bloody TS cable. Finally resolved it, thanks dude

@@PeteJohnsMusic Dont need to ask, already.
VERY VERY HELPFUL. I hate when people just say 'plug this here, stick this there,' with little to no explanation so you don't learn the importance of WHY its best/necessary to do or not do something. And for that, I just subbed...thx! 😊
Thanks for the kind words and support my friend. Appreciate it.

Awesome! Very glad to hear it my friend.
Thanks for clearing that up; I never knew they were called ts, trs and trrs. Now I understand the potential problems.
Yup. It’s a bit of a minefield with the different connections but once you have the basic understanding you’ll know how to line up the rings.
Killer video friend! Answered all of my questions and some I didn't know I had.
Haha! Great to hear. 🙏
Spot on and really helpful as I am no where near to know the differences are apart from the look of those connections.

Thanks my friend. Appreciate you.
Big thanks...You were clear...easy to understand and EXTREMELY HELPFUL. here's to hoping all good things come to you. I've been using a mic into a preamp and then popped an XLR to ts adapter to run it as a line in on my interface but I kept getting distortion and I couldn't tell from where. Well I guess that adapter was meant for guitars...and I've been walking in circles wondering why I was getting distortion...I thought it was a gain staging thing. Now I know why. They look alike and fit right...but they aren't the same. Thanks again.
Yup. It’s probably the most common issue folks have with audio. Glad the video helped.

Thanks! Had a lot of trouble just getting a straight answer on whether an unbalanced stereo jack is the same as a balanced mono jack - as in, TRS. Some shops only say stereo jack and mention nothing about TS/TRS/balance so it was really confusing.
Yes, it’s not a super simple concept to understand and cables at often confusing in their labelling. M
Love your channel, recently bought some new equipment with your help!
Excellent!! So glad to hear I was able to help. 🙏
Hey, thanks a lot. Just bought my first condenser microphone for recording my acoustic and was wondering how is it possible to connect it to my amp if I want. Now I know what cable to buy and got some good additional general knowledge as well. Short, simple yet very instructional. Thanks again.
Hey there. You’re very welcome. Just remember that a condenser mic requires phantom power so make sure you are goi if through a mixer of interface which can provide 48v of phantom power.
Thank you Pete! Learned a lot from this video.

I had no idea the re the unbalance balnced. Made me realise Ive the wrong cable for Interface to monitors. My interface and monitors each have 2 different imput/output and Ive been using a TS to phono but need to swap to a TRS to XLR . Cheers!! Very helpful and to the point.

Interesting! I always saw those lines but never knew they were for more than decoration
Yes, it’s a bit of an eye opener. I would get so frustrated, especially with headphone jacks as there’s really no way to tell if they are TRS or TRRS.

Hey there. Not familiar with the gear but in general, if a piece of gear has a balanced input/output, you should be using balanced cable. The manual will generally tell you if it’s balanced or unbalanced. studiolivetoday.com/cables
