Subscribed! Just for this video alone. I can't even prepare a fish meal without stumbling on something on my home kitchen... And you did it on a kayak... A frigging kayak! Hats off to you.
Grandma used to love it when dad would bring her a bunch of bluegill. She liked them scaled, beheaded, and gutted. She would fry them whole and then the spines would pull right out. The meat fell off the bones. I never much cared for it, but that old woman loved them. This video made me remember her. Thank you for that.
Beautiful man!!! Now I've got to go and raid my freezer again and cook myself up a fish! That looked absolutely delicious!!! For Christmas dinner my son and his wife and myself are going to cook up some fish, more than likely it'll be a Western Australian Dhufish and some Western Australian Rock Lobster done in the BBQ!!! Take care and tight lines Steve!!!!!!
I cast net probably 50-100 bluegills at least once a week in my canal and I'll cook like you said it's a pretty widespread way of doing so, they're like nuggets
People really seem to enjoy them. I am not into eating a weird fish to see what it tastes like, outside of this one, but will keep doing the catch and cooks. They are pretty fun to make.
That was such an awsome video! You should do more. Now I want to go out and try it!! Thanks for the videos, they have inspired me to fish more often on my own kayak!
hi my name is Tom and I live in Boston. I just started to watch your videos last week and I think they are awesome. I visit my brother every June. he lives in destin, watching your videos makes me think about all the times I have fished with my brother on the kayak. keep up the great work and l look forward for the new ones. lol I wish I was fishing with you rather than shoveling snow from my driveway. thanks for cool videos.
hallo ich mag deine Videos sehr. Echt eine Schöne sache mit inklusiver Verpflegung das ist echt der Hammer! Bitte noch mehr solche Filme! Liebe Grüsse aus Zürich
Just wanted to say another great video! Love it. I've consumed a pretty fair share of grunts (bigger guys) on otherwise skunked days, plenty good for my taste. Keep it up!!!
Man you are the best. I love your videos and you always do something different which is what i have always wanted to see. Great stuff Keep it up. I love this great sport .Have been fishing since i was 5 .
Yea, people get put off because it is called "bait", but they are generally from the same family as the "food" fish. Couldn't tell the difference myself.
You're a Netsilik. just like me when I was a kid no electronics, no drugs. Learning how to survive and respect mother nature. Thank you for the good time :-):-):-)
Yea, pretty much. I do a lot of city living, but am equally fine alone in the wilderness. This channel is about as social media as i get. I hate my cell phone.
+Key West Kayak Fishing Your channel is Educational and a great tool for the upcoming generation maybe some day our friend Retz manage to catch one fish.LOL
Hi Steve, we recently booked a 2 day trip to the keys Jan 5th and I was hoping to do some shore fishing during then. I found your channel and spent the afternoon watching several of your videos. Wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your videos as you included many details that make me feel more confident about getting out there and make the most of the few days I'm there. We will be staying in middle torch key so it looks that No Name Bridge is close but I want to get out to channel 5 as well. I also plan on timing it out with the tides using the tides4fishing you mentioned. I'll probably try and rent some rods and buy bait - I saw cudjoes on one of your videos - any advice on what bait to buy? How to make a cheap chum bag? I'm hoping to make sure my GF has a good time so any other tips/advice would be appreciated! Again, all info above I learned from your videos so thanks again.
Chum bags are cheap, like $5. Just buy one, use it, and leave it at the bridge. But definitely use the chum. Don't forget you'll need some rope. I would get Ballyhoo and shrimp. Live shrimp is best but then you would need a bait bucket or scrounge up a 5-gallon bucket (which is not a bad idea as you can carry your stuff in it.) Go small on the hooks, #1 or 2 live bait hooks. Some 1oz and 2oz egg sinkers. That is pretty much all you need. Keep it basic. You can also pick up some yellowtail hooks (weighted hooks) to drift ballyhoo chunks back in the chum line. If you want to make sure your GF is happy, take some time and check out the sights LOL, unless she is a hardcore fisherman as well. Two days doesn't get you much time down here and fishing will take up a lot of it. depends on your priorities i guess. If you have any other questions, use my email. keywestyakker@gmail.com
Key West Kayak Fishing Ah Steve. Lol. I was getting ready to leave you a comment, my old salty friend., then I noticed this response. LMAO!! Keep up the good, nah.."Great Work" on keeping your viewers informed and entertained!
It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on differences in fishing the west coast compared to Florida as you have done both. I live in Miami but I'm curious about the west coast experience.
Saltwater wise, it is primarily rockfish which incorporates shallow vertical jigging. Not really live bait driven except for a few pelagic species. A great show to watch on youtube is "Local Knowledge Fishing Show". It is a Key West Guide and the owner of the Bloody Decks website fishing with each other. Here in the Keys and in California. They kind of compare the different priorities of each and then adapt them at each others home turf. Really interesting. One of my favorite channels.
Love the catch and eat videos. Not sure I ever thought about eating blue gills out of the delta though. I've always considered them trash fish like white fish or suckers.
Cool vid! You really made me hungry! Reminded me of one of " Andy's Fishing" vids. The only difference is he does over nights on his boat- would be a little hard to do on a kayak, though.
Actually there are a lot of guys that put tents on their Adventure Islands. I can run both outriggers and one side will fit a one man tent perfectly. Usually there is a tarp that is run across the outrigger that you can stand on, so it is plenty cushiony. I am not that into it, so probably not going to see me doing that. But then again, all the views. Hmmmm.
During the run we have down here, there are some big ones. i always wondered if the bigger they got the flavor changed. A hogleg sized one would be more than a meal.
Key West Kayak Fishing The 4 I cast netted were about 14-16" long. They yielded some pretty nice fillets and the meat was much whiter than the mullet you filleted. I fried them and mangrove snapper, and the flavors were nearly the same. Just make sure you don't leave the skin on, or it'll taste fishy!
Chris, you made me really hungry for a mess of fish. Guess I will just have to try a Arby's fish sandwich tomorrow. Thanks for another entertaining video. Will be in Marathon on 1/8 . How about lunch at Hurricane Whole one day. Have you done anything with the jigs and spoons?
Fun video! I've had grunts and thought they tasted a bit like snappers. I've also had smoked mullet, so no shame there either. The pin looked like more bones than I'd care to deal with though.
Yea, once I gave up on the idea that I was not going to be able to devour the bones with the meat, it was really easy to just eat one side, pull out the skeleton, and then eat the other filet. Pretty painless. Same thing as eating a whole fish on the plate, but with these little guys you can just hold them and pull off the filets and chomp each side in one go.
Porgies are a hot commodity down here. They are a crustacean eater so they taste closer to a lobster than fish. Highly prized down here. They do not go back.
Good morning Steve, awesome job as always. I think you should get a PO Box so companies and fans would send you baits and things like that. BTW I'm going offshore again tomorrow , wish me good luck
Since I am a live bait guy, a bunch of envelopes of dead fish is not what I want. LOL. For now it's all about the fun so no big deal if people just watch.
yep it's a southern thang lol, here in tennessee bream and crappie are pretty much the only fish we eat. you can eat bigger fish that way if you score the rib cage length wise with a knife before frying, the bones will crunch when you eat them.
Thanks TennesseeCheeZe. I thought about that afterwards. When we used to do it we cut the gills into chunks then fried them. That got the bones crunchy and easy to eat whole. I am not sure with the Pinfish because they have a pretty solid spine. Much thinker than the gills that I remember. I might have to try it again.
Awesome! When I saw the egg and flour I was like; is he frying it on one of those islands? but no right out of the yak!!! I have a Colombian friend who taught me that any fish is edible... he even fries hardhead florida catfish. We've caught ray and he's mentioned their "wing" section is edible but we've never cooked one... we ate some shark one time! Now I really want to try pilchards and a recent one I saw online SANDFLEAS!!! Anyways great vid man and munch on 🍴
Yea, pretty much all fish is edible. It really comes down to how you prepare it. Some people just have preconceived notions even before they actually have tried a species.
They are basically 5mil dive booties but with a sole. They are pretty comfortable, and with the high tops it keeps the sand and rocks out. It doesn't really get cold down here, but being 5 mil, they should do pretty good in anything but ice water.
It's PLA-ta-knee-tos Steve..... If you are going to be an honorary Cuban you need to say it right!!! Lmao. Man with all the great edible fish you catch, you are going to eat mullet... mullet.... really..... All kidding aside though, pinfish is part of the porgy family and I assume are good (wouldn't mind trying that if it grew up). Grunt, which that looked like a Cottonwick, aka Cuban snapper.... Been there done that, not going back unless I'm really really hungry. Mullet, you can eat them all as far as concerned... Lol... Thank you for vid as always though hermano!!! Keeping on the reeel!!!
I come from a small village on the furthest South eastern west coast part of the island (just next to the palm tree and before you hit the mangroves but not before the Publix.) There we call it plan-tan-yas. LOL. When you fry stuff, they all taste the same. Now, if you sashimi all that stuff, then you will know, and fast.

Mullet actually is really good fried used to eat it often just cause taste better then catfish to me was born and raised in Florida near merritt island
They definitely eat it up in the southern states. Not so much down here in south florida and the Keys. It was alright. I preferred the Grunt and Pinfish as they basically just tasted like Snapper.
Nah. a little fishiness to it but I think it is because I left the skin on. Plus, when you fry fish, it kind of mutes the actual flavor and gives it that crunchy goodness. It is quite popular in the southern states.
Northern/Central Florida delicacy. Fried like this or smoked mullet is always good. Some people eat the gizzards. Big horse mullets you can fillet but the size mullet Steve had in this video I just fillet after cooking.
It had a lighter fish taste but just a slight. It's hard to tell when you are batter frying as that covers a lot of taste. Sort of like a fresh water trout is kind of what I compare it with.
Fried fish and platanitos maduros on the water... that's just wonderful! I am a fan Steve. Thanks for the great shows
the simplicity of this quick dish makes me hungry as hell!!! definitely can appreciate it
i absolutely love these cooking on a kayak videos! please keep them coming
Appreciate it. Will do.

Fish tails/chips and bluegill poppers. Bluegills are an under utilized food source.
I love to see these catch n cook videos, really inspires me to get out there and do one myself!
People really seem to enjoy them. I am not into eating a weird fish to see what it tastes like, outside of this one, but will keep doing the catch and cooks. They are pretty fun to make.

Thanks Deutly. Definitely get out there. Get outside, get some exercise, and bring home dinner. Can't beat that.
Yeah Buddy! Good eats. I am also a California Refugee. I'm in High Springs. Come on up and fish the river up here. Camp in my Yard! Springs are sweet!

i love these videos...especially when u catch make and eat
Thanks. I have more coming up. They are fun to make.

Just wanted to say another great video! Love it. I've consumed a pretty fair share of grunts (bigger guys) on otherwise skunked days, plenty good for my taste. Keep it up!!!
Yea, they are totally fine. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between that and a snapper.
its crazy to me that you did all of this from the kayak.
LOL, I like to refer to my kayak as a ship. LOL. Just have to be efficient about things.
I've eaten all three in my time but never from a kayak. It's something different for sure.
Just like camping. Glad I found that little cooker. Now I can do more stuff on the run.
Man I'm so jealous! That's living life for sure! Thanks for the upload!
No problem Oscar. Glad you liked it.
Never seen frying on the water you really are a key west fishing guru! Love the videos brother keep em up!
Appreciate it Tyler. All the catch and cooks are fun to do. Thanks for watching.
I do like your pal, Neochino's set up. I think if I were to try kayak fishing, I'd have to go that route.
It combines the best of all the kayak and boating features.
awesome, you took kayaking to the next level
Man you are the best. I love your videos and you always do something different which is what i have always wanted to see. Great stuff Keep it up.
I love this great sport .Have been fishing since i was 5 .
Thanks Gambit. It keeps things interesting for viewers and for me too. That is around when I started as well. My parents taught me well.
cool man.
Yes I Have ! Pinfish were my staple living on my boat on Stock Island/Key West going to FKCC in the 70's YUM!
Fry em up and pick off the meat. Tasty stuff.

Bluegill, Crappie, all white flesh fish. Really good. Eat the small ones so not a lot of mercury build up.

Alot of times they will have parasites, make sure you cook them completely.
Chris what would you say they taste like?
Livin the life my friend.
Be one with the bait. LOL.
Dude love your videos.
Fun video! I've had grunts and thought they tasted a bit like snappers. I've also had smoked mullet, so no shame there either. The pin looked like more bones than I'd care to deal with though.
jcanracer I get tons of grunts but always use them for bait or throw them back . Next time I get one I'm going to try it
Aliex Folgueira yep, and you know what else is worth keeping? Porgies. I've seen people turn up their noses at them but they're delicious.
They do not go back.
great food...👀👀👍👍👍
Small but tasty.
Awesome Video!
Glad you liked it Nelson.
Good morning Steve, awesome job as always. I think you should get a PO Box so companies and fans would send you baits and things like that. BTW I'm going offshore again tomorrow , wish me good luck
I've seen a couple of your vids Alex, thanks for the uploads, and catch them all tomorrow!!!!
Joel Garcia thank you 😁😁😁 did you subscribe to my channel??
Since I am a live bait guy, a bunch of envelopes of dead fish is not what I want. LOL. For now it's all about the fun so no big deal if people just watch.
Haha me too I'm live/cut bait first
yep it's a southern thang lol, here in tennessee bream and crappie are pretty much the only fish we eat.
you can eat bigger fish that way if you score the rib cage length wise with a knife before frying, the bones will crunch when you eat them.

your living the life man!
Thanks Henry. I try and not take it for granted. Especially for the next couple months of winter.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
can I ask what type of shoes you are wearing. I live in Maine and the water is cold most times of the year. looking to stay dry. Thanks Ed
They are basically 5mil dive booties but with a sole. They are pretty comfortable, and with the high tops it keeps the sand and rocks out. It doesn't really get cold down here, but being 5 mil, they should do pretty good in anything but ice water.
when you get the chance you should do some pier fishing
great vidz keep it up

Your toilet paper bill must be huge!! Great video as usual. Still trying to get a kayak...wife says no!!
You are a very good scaler
Like a machine. LOL.
with the pin fish and bluegill I use pliers to pull out the dorsal find spine and it should come out with the bones if you pull hard enough
Yea, if you do the slices along the side, they come out very easily. Sharp knife dependent though.
Mullet and grunt I already know are great
Yea, the Grunts and Pinfish are pretty much Snapper. Taste about the same just smaller.
love these cooking on kayak vids. i also have a kayak but didnt think it was a good idea. you're giving me hope :)
btw, what is that folding knife with the red handle?
If your using propane, no real issues. Everything is already wet so no risk of catching fire. Hot oil though... Dollar store folding kitchen knife.
bananas are bad luck on a fishing boat dude. lol don't look like it affects you though . you are always kickin ass
Grunts and pinfish are tasty, just don't have as much meat as the snappers and other larger fish. Never tried eating a mullet, maybe someday (or not).
Man, You're living the dream, wish I could do this, meanwhile I'm stuck studying haha, it's hard to concentrate when you're thinking about the next fishing trip, well, I'll patiently wait until I reach the legal age of 18 here in Mexico and I'll hopefully venture myself in fishing expeditions like yours!

P.D- Steve, Are You Japanese?
Have some nice fishing areas down there. Heritage yes but spent more time in Mexico.
sure made me hungry watching that .
That is the way I know that I did a good job. Thanks for watching.
Lol, are you serious? Frying bait in your kayak. You crazy Steve. See you soon.
I'll be adding the tent soon. LOL.
What happened to your blue kayak?
Jaziel Diaz hey whats up 😁
Aliex Folgueira hey Aliex. Great channel for fishing.

It sits on my patio. I like the Tarpon 140 for quick runs and when I am feeling fat.
Jaziel Diaz was

Good to know.
wow man ur awesome
Appreciate that Alias.

Thanks CJ.
This is epic
Good survival food. Or just everyday lunch if your from the south.
Hi i love your vids
Thanks xmakeitx.
Fried bluegill is one the best eating fish in the world
cmon uncle! you threw da match in da wata!
Seeing someone eat a mullet to me is like seeing someone eat from a chum box.
That's the whole south. Vegans should eat them since they are vegetarians.
What type of shoes are those??
U can only use solitaire witch is two per person or sculpin bullheads

Nah. a little fishiness to it but I think it is because I left the skin on. Plus, when you fry fish, it kind of mutes the actual flavor and gives it that crunchy goodness. It is quite popular in the southern states.
all the fishes that you fed will mutate 😂😂
That means I will mutate. Uh oh.
Great vids.
Did not know you were from California.
Do you own this channel "world fish hunting"? Same vids as yours.
Yea, born and raised in the Central Valley. Yea, that channel is just copying all my stuff. I contacted TH-cam about it.
That's called making chicken salad outta chicken chit!!😎
COOKEM IN THE MOUTH STEVE! LOL
That could be my saying. Don't hook em in the mouth, cook em and put em in your mouth. LOL. That's catchy.
The heads taste the best
I live by the delta there is a stir sturgeon derby on Saturday to Sunday
Delta like in California. I am the sturgeon guy for sure when I lived in Sacramento.
A++,,,,cook on...
Thanks Allen. Will do. They have been very popular.
Great video does mullet taste good
It was great as a fried filet. I know it is really popular in the South mainland.
It's so much easier to remove the bones when the fish is cook
Nice vid. How is the flavor of Mullet?
Gulp_Man102 oily
Northern/Central Florida delicacy. Fried like this or smoked mullet is always good. Some people eat the gizzards. Big horse mullets you can fillet but the size mullet Steve had in this video I just fillet after cooking.
It had a lighter fish taste but just a slight. It's hard to tell when you are batter frying as that covers a lot of taste. Sort of like a fresh water trout is kind of what I compare it with.
Btw the "cone-shaped" weights used for bass fishing are called bullet weights
yea, them fandangle weighty thing. LOL. Thanks, had a brain freeze. Not too much bass fishing down here.
you brought a banana onto a boat? must be your first time xD
LOL. What banana. You mean Plantain. Totally cool for fishing.
the fishing gods can't tell the difference. I still wouldn't take the chances. lmao my bad didn't hear u say plantain haha.
