    When I repackage into mason jars, I always put notes on how to rehydrate directly on the jar. Best thing I've found is a short section of wide masking tape and a fine point sharpie. Not fancy but makes great labels that last :-)

    • @lynndietz2097
      @lynndietz2097 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because I reuse lids I bought some labels with the elastic bands. I write what it is and date on the back. Once I use the product I reuse the label on the next jar I make.

      I use green painter tape to label my jars, cleans off easily, doesn't get brittle.

    Unfortunately, I purchased the Hoosier Hill sour cream powder and hubby and I tried it as our first time sampling such a thing. Yeah, pretty bad. I am glad you mentioned putting a little bit on your dehydrator tray while drying something else. I am going to try that next time I have to buy sour cream.
    I tried a couple trays of cheddar cheese after I watched your video on it. I had shredded a bunch to vacuum seal and freeze, and took a little and dried it. Had to blot it frequently, but turned out great! Love your videos, thank you for all of your hard work!

    Love my vacuum chamber. I've been purchasing large containers of spices, cocoa, coffee etc and dividing them into smaller glass jars then sealing. So far all seals have held.

    I Love that you got those silicone mats for your dehydrators. I Love mine. I have 3 round dehydrators and the mats I got only fit on 2 of them. The one without a fan, and only 3 trays of the collapsible one (so I dehydrate liquids and other things on different racks all the time). I have tried it with sour cream (works well in soups, sauces, dips and as a topping sprinkle for me).
    Again, thank you Heidi for your videos. I really appreciate your content (and how you go out of your way to research and try things people ask for help with). You're a very caring lady. ❤️

    I used to be able to buy sour cream in packets (like gravy or spaghetti seasoning mixes), but I haven't seen those in years. I bought them to keep when my kids were small so I never had to open a sour cream container that had green fuzz on it because I couldn't use it up fast enough. I have bought the cream powder, and used it in dehydrated mushroom soup which I vacuum sealed in jars for a quick addition to things I'd use mushroom soup in. I have the cheese to dehydrate, but haven't made it that far yet. Thanks for your reviews and ideas on how to use them! Many Blessings!

      Hi TennesseeGirl - I specifically searched out to find this video for LT product recommendations from Heidi.
      I've been using Sacco brand for yrs but considering other options
      Though item instructions mention to add to water to rehydrate - it depends on my goal.
      To make cornbread sometimes I'll just add the powder separately as part of dry ingredients and follow up with h20 at end.
      If I'm making ranch dip I just add the b-powder straight & add then add h20 to adjust recipe for preferred consistency.

    I have recently tried the prescribed for life organic whole milk. I refrigerated it first before I taste tested it. It is really good. I had my husband taste it but I didn’t tell him it was powdered milk. He really liked it and said thought it actually would pass as regular milk. He also had a mom who tried to pass off the nonfat milk and hated it.

After it was dry I blended into a powder, put in a jar and vacuumed sealed it with a coffee filter on top. That was 6 weeks ago and I have not yet tried rehydrating. Will do that soon. I have been hesitant to purchase those powders because of the cost. I am Canadian so it ends up being very expensive. I was just going to get some and pack it away until she. • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, the powders are expensive so you have to also figure in that they are dehydrated and how much you are getting once rehydrated. In most cases it will still cost more than fresh milk or cheese but you also have to figure out how much it costs in time and energy to dehydrate the items yourself. For us, dairy products, especially when trying to get the healthier ones, are expensive enough fresh so buying already dried ones, the cost is really not any more so it just makes sense for us to by them dried. We still by fresh dairy products but we also do not know how long we will be able to do that, especially with the prices going up on everything

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason it is "expensive" is the cost of the diary products going into them is not cheap, then you are also paying for the time and energy that goes into drying them. Also, powders take up far less room than the finished product so if you are actually going to price it out per ounce, you have to consider what the total ounce per package of dried product would be once fully rehydrated. You may find there is very little different in price after figuring what you pay for "fresh" dairy in the store. For those who have dairy animals already, it is worth it for them, if having dried diary on hand is something they would use, to go ahead and dry the products themselves.

      If it were me, I would just divide the powder part in half so it is 1/2 part whole milk powder, 1/2 part heavy cream. Then add the four parts water. For example in order to make a cup of half and half:
      1/8 cup heavy cream powder
      1/8 cup whole milk powder
      1 cup water (or less if you want to make it richer)

    I can't have milk in my diet - but my dog does (I make Kefir with it) I bought z dried whole milk. It comes in large sizes at a good discount 5 gallons and more even. It has worked good for her. I also use goats milk dried powder (comes in canisters) She prefers goats milk - BUT, have to keep the kefir grains going.
    Do you have any videos on coconut products from flour to milk? I finally purchased 5 gallon sealed containers of coconut flour and 5 gals of coconut oil. My issue is using grated coconut to make milk or store to use in different ways.
    BTW, coconut kefir milk and cheese are very versatile and extremely easy for someone to make.

    OK....first of all, neither of us had never heard of molasses in milk. So....we're watching you & when you said that, I looked at my husband & we both smiled.....I said "Gotta try that !!" Both of us love molasses !! In fact, he's getting the molasses as I type this .LOL
    Secondly, I love white milk....but it's one of those things that needs something w/it....a choc.chip cookie or something like that..it's not something to pour & drink all by itelf. And when we switched to organic milk, my goodness, what a difference in taste from non-organic !! It's WAY better.
    Thirdly, neither of us has heard of some of the powdered products you showed us....that was enlightening & interesting!
    Thank you, Heidi !!
