- The Big eBay Experiment: What Went Wrong
In November, I tried a bold experiment with my eBay store-lowering my promoted ad rates to pass the savings onto customers. What I didn’t expect? A massive drop in sales, fewer impressions, and an influx of what I’d call “bad buyers.”
In this video, I’ll break down:
The changes I made to my eBay store.
How these tweaks backfired, resulting in a 31% drop in items sold.
A bizarre interaction with a buyer that pushed me to call eBay support.
The surprising lessons I learned from this experience.

The ones that I hate the most are the ones that ask you for measurements to the point that you feel like you want to block them and THEN they send a 50% offer.
Yes that's tough. Thank you for watching 🤟
As a big clothing seller... I hate when I'm shopping for clothes on ebay and there are no measurements... I usually never ask and move on to the next
I usually get great customer service from eBay. If I do not like the agent, I just say thank you and end the call and recall to get a different agent. This usually works.
Awesome. I'm glad they help you. Thank you for sharing and watching 🤟
Great video again, I could listen to great "bad" experience stories all day long. I have had and continue to experience them a lot. I use the block feature quite often. Everyday is a new learning experience it seems.
2% is my ad rate on everything, and it works fine.
Experiment all the time with different sales, customers love sales. I use a dedicated store category (savings) for just older items I'm trying to turn and get the money back working for me.
Awesome! Sounds like you have found what works for you. It's always good to try new strategies but sometimes it doesn't work out. Thank you for watching 🤟
“Prayer hands” is a very United States deal of that emoji 🙏 What that emoji typically means in many foreign countries (especially India), and several others were scammers are prevalent, is “thank you.”
🙏Thank you for watching 🤟
Same experience. I ran a sale for the first time recently. I normally price at the top and accept offers of 20% off, so I put everything on a 20%-off sale. Lots of low offers came in, but because I was already at the lowest price I want to sell, I couldn't accept or counter.
Next time, I will run the sale at 10% off and counter low offers at another 10% off.
I believe that the sale increases visibility.
That makes sense. Thank you for sharing and watching 🤟
I usually stick with the mark up and discount down, ads at the suggested rates etc.
I'm glad you found a system that works for you! 🤟
I only get the lowball offers when I run sales too
It's kind of strange but I'm glad it's not just me. Thank you for watching 🤟
Block Block Block! Almost every time I have stuck with a possible sale through multiple messages/offers it has come back to bite me. There are plenty of good buyers out there, no need to waste time and effort on bad/probable bad buyers.
I agree. Got to trust that gut. Thank you for watching 🤟
I think your message saying you're at your lowest price was a bit curt. I try to keep the possibility of closing the sale as high as possible, even when I think they won't buy. It's a numbers game. Out of 100 lowball offers, only 10 might ever possibly come up to an acceptable price. You want to do everything within reason not to turn away those 10 buyers. So to every low offer, I say "Thanks for the offer, but …." (You can keep your message templates saved in a browser extension to eliminate your emotions.)
Use the minimum offer feature to get them up to an acceptable price before you even hear from them. In USA, buyers get 5 offers, so they can get their low offers out of the way and you just talk to the buyers that come closer to your price. Here in Ireland, buyers only get 1 offer, so I can't use minimum offer because it shuts down the conversation too early.
Yeah I use a minimum offer but it's really low just to avoid the crazy low offers. Thank you for sharing and watching 🤟
I would have done the same thing but not wasted time with eBay support, I would just remove the item for awhile.
Yeah that would of saved me some time. Thank you for watching 🤟
Can you give your subscribers some transparency? What is your ad rate? Do you use the Suggested ad rate?
My ad rate works for me but you have to find what works for you and what your business model can afford. I suggest starting as low as you can. Thank you for watching 🤟
@SecondChancePicker that seems like a very diplomatic response
@@ohwow1573
It's a bs response lol. Dude is acting like it's the secret recipe for coke.
@@WellnessWizdomright? It would be interesting to compare to our ad rates but dudes acting like it’s some magic formula. What a waste of time
I had about the same results!
I'm glad I'm not alone. Thank you for watching 🤟
Thank you for sharing. Prayers you have a blessed day in the name of Jesus Christ.

Ebay has an option to set the minimum offer. You can do it as a bulk as well. Doing that, you would avoid low offers you get so emotional about. Yes, it is a business, nothing else. IMHO I would never let anyone to make me to remove my listings. What would I do? Set the study price (no offers). He would never buy it anyway. He lives in your area. So what? He is no more damage than anyone else. Good luck to you and other ebayers!
Thank you for watching 🤟
If receiving offers while running a sale bothers you so much just turn off offers in the bulk edit tool. Turn them back on when your sale is over.
To me, it sounds like you are taking all this way too personal.
Thank you for watching 🤟
I think your imaginations too strong. With the buyer should just blocked him and moved on holding the waste my time ringing up eBay. I hope you have a post box and not use your home address? When I first started years ago I was selling a motorbike leather suit I purchased two them cheap. I was trying to sell them for a long time at some guy who lived close to me sent me his phone number in code. He actually offered 50% of what I was trying to sell it for. I have for sale on I took it. Turned out it was a fake and he wanted his money back. I told him to take it up with eBay and blocked his phone number. Ended up taking the other motorbike jacket off eBay and selling it on Facebook marketplace, as it was fake too. Very well made fakes from Turkey. The second one was was a fake leather jacket, if it was genuine it was a $1200 second hand jacket. I ended up selling it just as a leather jacket and got my money back. I had so many people messaging me when they saw the tag. Cheers Graham

Prayer hands and goofy emojis are a clear sign to me to just BLOCK BUYER because those people are ALWAYS A PROBLEM. Same with people who ask way too many questions. When people low ball me less than a quarter of the price - BLOCK! or report him to ebay (but not with anyone in India because they have no idea what they are doing)
🙏thank you for watching 🤟
I only get the lowball offers when I run sales too
It's kind of strange but I'm glad it's not just me. Thank you for watching 🤟
