    My heart sank when this place was reported closed, Me and my wife stayed here in room 32 back in the 90's, back then it was pretty much the way Jim had lived there 20+ years earlier. There was no graffiti, a simple bed, tv and a dresser and that was it! and the people who ran the place had no clue who Jim Morrison was nor did they care. I hope someone or some organization can buy and renovate this place. Thanks Tim even though this is really sad to see, I do have some video of this place back in 95, you have inspired me to put it up on TH-cam so people can see this place in an earlier version, look for it soon. Peace Brother!

      @@RockessentialTim I'm sure people attempted graffiti back then but, I think the people who ran the place promptly painted over any of it, I think they were from Taiwan and had no interest in catering to Doors fans. We did "liberate" the original bathroom light switch cover after finding a razor blade to cut through 60 years of paint. We also bought a replacement cover at the drug store across the street. We signed our names on the back and installed the new one. Out of all the graffiti that's there, the one behind the bathroom light switch was the first to escape the beige paint-over.

    Your lovely wife should have used her lipstick to write on the walls .
    i was lucky to see the Doors at an outdoor concert in around 67. Morrison was electrifying but the Youngbloods stole the show .
    As they were getting ready to end their set with "Get together " a stage hand came up and whispered something in Jessie's ear. he got a huge smile on his face and started the song .
    Near the end he began to cry which had all of us sobbing to the intense emotion he was creating . he then told us that his wife had given birth to one of their children just prior to starting the song .
    the emotional atmosphere was overwhelming . i will never forget it.

    Another great video Tim, thanks, I’m a Brit who used to live and work in SoCal, most of my work was in let’s say’s the wider 90210 area. One day I went to a big job at 10452 Bellagio, I was fortunate to go back several times and appreciate that this was where Brian Wilson had lived and had “taken to his bed”. In England there would be a blue plaque placed outside to recognise this and the house would be preserved, just like they’ve done in Liverpool to the Beatles former homes.
    Without saying too much, there was going to be some renovations carried out and I’d be going back to 10452 once it was done. Imagine my horror when eventually I went back and the Brian Wilson house had been demolished, and replaced with a white box. It’s bordering on being criminal.
    Is it any wonder I thought, that I often had local people talking to me about the historic places in England and complaining that the USA doesn’t have any history…..
    Jim’s grave is nothing out of the ordinary but I suspect that it will remain the same forever and is that such a bad thing?
    Keep up your great work, it’s all about the music!

      Yeah, unfortunately that kind of stuff seems to happen a lot here in the States. I think its because the oldest things around us are Strip Malls and its unwritten law that they get torn down and rebuilt every 40 years or so. The Alta Cienega was built in 1948 and I can assure you that besides Barney's Beanery, its the oldest building in that neighborhood.

    I struggle to watch any video about the havoc that was allowed to be done to this "monk's cell" (as Jim called it), which should have been preserved in its original state and sealed, like a time capsule. The visit (for a fee) would have been possible only by looking inside through a glass mounted in place of the entrance door. In Europe this is how we preserve valuable things (whole buildings!) and pass them on to the next generations. But not America. America has a short memory. In America people raze to the ground to rebuild, and while this offers so many new opportunities, unfortunately it makes it very difficult to look at the past with awareness. Fans believe Room 32 is cool in its current state and don't realize that it's not a celebration of Jim but of themselves. However, I still hope that some millionaires will buy it to restore it to its original state and FINALLY turn it into a museum. I definitely would if I had the money. Thank you for your video: I was there a few months ago but I was so depressed and moved that I didn't take any videos or photos. I waved to the dog, as Jim would have. I turned my back and walked away with the almost certainty of saying goodbye forever in my heart.

    • @RockessentialTim
      @RockessentialTim  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What an interesting and though provoking post! I totally agree that many fans do it as a celebration of Jim when really it is about themselves. But---in doing so the years and years of writing on those walls has turned the room into, in my mind, something more than where Jim used to sleep. There is no denying when you are in that room that you are standing amid some kind of experience--like an immersive, grotesque art exhibit but a powerful and provocative experience nonetheless. I kinda think Morrison might have liked that.

      Unfortunately, everything that puts a filter between us and him, distances the perception we have of him and of the reality and times in which he lived. For someone like me who has spent more than thirty years studying his life and work even at an academic level, this is an interesting cultural event but an unforgivable mess in terms of historical preservation. Then looms all over the danger of the entire Motel suffering the usual fate of all things "old" L.A.: bulldozers! Sa sad 😞

Appartently he got confused as to where the party was and knocked on a random door and woke up a family of Japanese tourists. He then told them that it was an American tradition for singers to go door to door entertaining people. 1980s - I am guessing, it’s been many days and nights since then - I was invited to a party there after a gig at the Troubadour. That’s was before the fancy pants parking structures were built and It was odd to me because there were parking spaces available on the property. I remember turning left at the top of the stairs and the room “26” burned in my mind forever. I knocked and a BEAUTIFUL girl answered and within a second she asked if I had any cigarettes. I got a glimpse of the room and the activities and a voice in my head said get the “F” out of here NOW. “I have some Marlboro’ in the truck but if you would like something else there’s a liquor store around the corner, what would you like?” She replied, “Virginia Slims green box.” I booked out of there, was in the truck AND on the road pronto! ❤No one… 20s or 90s, should see the things that I saw there that night. I don't want to say the stay there was charming and delightful, you dont go on an adventure like this for charming and delightful. We were there for hedonism and indulgence and that's what we ....well, staying there longer than five minutes, the room in all its brilliant "decor" has a weird effect on you. Definitely hypersexual. At nighttime the general ambience of the entire motel, its being set into a rocky hillside on one side, the tunnel entrance underneath Room 32, and the backside of the store on Santa Monica Blvd, with the angled backside of the billboard perched above it, the visual effect of that was a quaint little enclosed courtyard feel to it, but everything looks more attractive at nighttime, when we arrived.
