Flash an Anet ET4 Pro or Plus to Marlin 2+ firmware using ST-Link v2 in Minutes!

- Open source Marlin firmware allows us options with our printer. Anet has heard, and using a ST-Link V2, it is pretty easy. These steps are for the ET4 pro or plus. As always, when flashing firmware make sure you have the correct model for your printer. Anet has files you can download here.

Worked Awesome. step by step was perfect. i appreciate the time and effort you put into this. this actually helped my bed leveling issues as well. had a minor headache where the thermistor went bad after the update for whatever reason, but was a simple enough fix and probably unrelated.

Had an issue with the touch screen calibration. Kept getting a calibration error. I found using a stylus helped and works great now!

I have not tried it on a ET5 Pro or ET5x... Cannot guarantee. May want to check an Anet group on FB. There are a lot of users there.

Hello, is it possible to get the pinout from the et4 pro board? I have a repaired et4 pro board at home and would like to install it in my Anet A8 plus?

Hi sir, good video and i appreciate the effort you spent. I would like to know how to adjust the setting in marlin firmware for my anet et4? because i decided to add bltouch to my printer.
I have not modded any of mine... I know you can add stuff and change the firmware... it is just not in my skill set. I recommend the Marlin Discord as a place to ask questions though.
Auto bed leveling is so confusing for me(on new firmware). Do you have any suggestion for doing this?
I do not use it. I still leveled with my paper (friction sound technique). Then on the printer I just nudged the Z level a tiny bit till I had the adhesion I was expecting. I am just not wired for ABL.

I have not created a abl video for that one. I did the bed level with paper like a normally would. Then when printing I was able to mod the z-offset in the firmware if it needed it. I think I have mine set at .13 at the moment.
Sometimes gcode file doesnt work properly for certain files in anet et4 pro.
Do i have to update? Have you faced such kind of problems?
I have had files where the file name was too long and did not work. What kinds of issues are you having? You do not have to update, but there are some bonuses in that you can calibrate your printer better with the features in Marlin 2.
Thanks for the great tutorial...I made Marlin on it just so I could install new z-axle that has a different pitch. I have set steps but sometimes after off and on z-steps are different again. Also, the print image is still so good because the nozzle sometimes slows down when printing is bloobs arise. Has anyone had the problemms? How can you fix them?
I am glad you liked the video. I have not done anything with hardware mods, so I am not sure about how to get your steps correct. With one of my Geeetech A10 printers I just kept adjusting the steps till my calibration cube was spot on.

Greetings, After upgrading to Marlin on Et4 Pro, have you already tested if it works when running out of power?
Hmm... 1st, mine may be a Anet ET4+. It may also be a 2020 ET4. I am still trying to figure that out. The initial boot screen said +. I thought I was getting an ET4. I think the pro really has a touch sensor. Long story short, my printer has not had any power issues. I do not believe it is a pro though.

hm i cant get the source version to work on my et4+ but i want to change some settings like linear advanced and such. the prebuild version for the et4+/pro works well :-(

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is it possible to make a firmware upgrade via a TF card?
I once read a manual where guy flashes only bootloader and Marlin was being upgraded via TF card
It is with a mod. I did it for one of my machines. I do not have a video about it. You need the ST-link to get there though.
@@HLModTech I know that I need ST-LINK to flash a bootloader. It is something like STK-500 for AVRs :)

HI Thanks for this video. I upgraded my ET4 pro as recommended however now I have to reconfigure the screen each and every time I start the printer. This is going incredibly fast and the calibration is most often impossible to perform (failed message). any suggestions on how to resolve this issue? Also any suggestions on how to calibrate the printer both manually and using the autolevelling? Thanks in beforehand and again so nice to get help!
I eventually got my settings to stick by saving the config after doing it. Usually I would get in, calibrate... print a part and forget. I leveled the bed with paper, then used the offset to hone it as I printed a few times. It seemed pretty slick, but I am still a manual bed leveler at ❤.

just send an M995 to the printer to start the calibration. then it should work fine without a fail message

Hi again, would it be hard to make the auto bed leveling work with marlin 2.0 since it's using the inductive sensor? Do I have to edit the firmware? Thanks!
I am still experimenting with it, so I will get back to you. The firmware I flashed allowed it to detect z with the sensor. I have always been a manual bed leveler, so I am learning with you at the moment.
@@HLModTech Me too. This is my first printer with ABL. I bought a BLTouch but I haven't installed it yet on my ender 3 v2. I find I don't really need it yet since i'm using a glass bed and my first layers are almost always perfect. Thank you for the response. I'll be waiting for your next videos. Keep it up!
Edit: I managed to install the BLTouch on my ender 3 v2 and it also works great!

hello i connect stlink and i see the printer i save the old firmware, and the program save the file ,but the file is only 4 kb instead of 392 kb , why? it is only the boot loader ? what can i do i intall openbootloader ? or what thanks

Hi, my new ET4+ has some wird problems from one day to the next one...
It prints sideways instead of upwards and it smashes into the bed despite being leveled and the height being set correctly...
do you think the software flash will help?

@@spellingmistake1 Hi. Can you tell me how did you do it? Did you reinstall the 1.1.2? My sensor wont detect the bed but only when is autolevelling. If I move it down manually it detect the bed... weird.
@@gustavovilloldo4370 I flashed to the current version of the open source Marlin software as it was described in the video.
The firmware has a bit more complicated UI Design but you can get used to it...
it offers a lot more features as well
I have a Diggro Alpha 5 printer which is a exact clone of Anet ET4 Pro. I wonder if it's possible to flash it with Anet firmware, will it work? Since it's a clone there's no firmware update for Diggro anywhere, so I thought maybe I could use firmware for ET4 Pro.
If I will do a backup of the original firmware first and then lets say I will fail flashing ET4 Pro firmware or there will be problems with it I can always flash the original frimware back to the printer, right?
I am not sure. I am making a new vid for the ET5x really soon. Watch the step for finding the correct config files for the printer. It would be interesting to see if there is a Diggro folder in there. Theoretically you can go back, but flashing always has risk.
@@HLModTech Hey, just want to let you know i flashed My Diggro Alpha 5 with the ET4 Pro firmware you provided succesfully. But now I'm not sure how to calibrate Z axis in the center, got my corners done manually with Calibrate Corners option and a piece of paper, but having problem with the point in the center of the bed. Old menu was very intuitive about it, but Marlins is a bit of a mystery for me in this case.
Hi I have updated my ET4 Pro to the newest frame wear upgrade. It started acting funny. So I had to unplug it, the screen kept flashing and the hot end kept crashing into the plate.. So then, I tried using 3D Touch leveling sensor. I plugged it into the board up top, where the original proximity sensor was, either I have shorted it out somehow or the new frame wear caused it. When I turn on the 3D Printer the LCD screen is black does not come on, but the printers fan does come on and it sounds like its running, but you can't get it to do anything. I tried unplugging it. I have checked all of the fuses on the inside. Is there any way to restart it? Or what should I replace the Motherboard or the LCD screen?
I think before I started replacing parts I would try to use the ST-Link v2 to send the original firmware to the pro. Just make sure it is the hex file. It has the bootloader and the bin files do not.

No ET4+ will come with Marlin 2... you have to make that mod on your own. The original Anet firmware is orange.
I've followed everything you've done but the anet screen has the open blt but has a message saying no firmware.srec I've got a firmware srec file on the sd card but still not initiating a firmware install any help would be greatly appreciated
Found my answers I had a bad download of the firmware srec so re- downloaded and it worked a treat ill keep this question here just in case anyone runs into the same problem

I recently tried to update my ET5X to Marlin, I accidentally forgot to insert the SD card with the firmware installed, I received a notice to insert the SD card with the firmware, I did that, but nothing happens. Any idea what steps I need to perform to get it moving again. I've tried disconnecting from the ST LINK software, then rebooted the printer, yet all I get is the insert firmware. Am I missing a step? Thanks
Should have nothing to do with the SD card. I have one ET4x I snagged broken that does not even have the SD card and was able to flash it with the ST-Link. I am assuming you are reading that note on the printer screen? When using ST-link all the info you care about should be on the PC side.

It didn't work, please help. I cannot revert to default firmware 1.0.2 et4 pro...I messed up when I saved the firmware from the board(small size, I guess wrong address length) and the firmware available on their website gives only a white screen. I still can write and connect via ST-link and if I write my "wrongly saved firmware" Anet logo will show and that's it.
Please give me an advise. The default firmware from their site contains few extra files (logo img, hex file and xbf file), should I do something with those files prior to flashing the et4p.bin file?
EDIT: Barely found out, that to revert, you have to write the hex file! NOT the bin file, when restoring the default firmware from anet site if using ST-Link.

@@HLModTech yes sir. It seems to be flashed ok. Unfortunately I only had the time to verify the menu's...not sure about functionality. I will test it later today.
Thing is that the open source firmware for et4 pro is no longer available...and the only other video from anet that shows step by step update using bootloader + firmware on SD card seems to be incompatible as the firmware they propose is for et5x and I asume there is an issue/difference with the spi of the display as the interface is broken. Broken as in the buttons are barely visible covered by lines and jiberish hieroglyphs...but the touch does work as I accidentally selected bed leveling procedure.
It work great, however, I have been using marlin in my anet for a time, yesterday it send a error message (max bed temp, please reset) and nothing can solve it. I had reflashed it but still the error screen.... Any advice about how to solve it?
It may be that your thermistor is broken or a wire has snapped. I have not fixed one of those though.

I doubt it. Not sure the hardaore can handle it, but I've never tried to take it there anyhow. What are you trying to do, Cook eggs? 🤪

I have flashed my Anet ET4+ but I'm getting issues, I check auto home and it has the correct distance between the nozzle and the bed, then after doing the bed calibration from the menu option it is a little bit tricky because the nozzle is at correct distance in the corners but on the center is touching the bed so I fixed compressing more the springs, but when printing the nozzle touches the bed and I got to compress more the springs. I have not find a way to solve it, so I got to do a huge skirt and compress the springs while printing until I got the correct distance, and for the next print I got to decompress the spring and compress again while doing the skirt. I hope you can make a video on how to level the bed with marlin, you and me got the same ET4+
Which firmware did you flash to? What kind of sensor do you have for Z?

@@vegitoita ok. I calibrated with a piece of paper. I saw a video about changing the offset for the inductive sensor, but since mine was fine I have not messed with it. Not sure what it was labeled, but I think it popped up on the FB Anet group. You had also mentioned swapping to a V6, but I keep my machines stock. I am too cheap to upgrade hardware. =)
@@HLModTech Indeed I'm thinking on chaning the offset to see if that solves the problem, but my Anet ET4+ remains with all the stock hardware I have not swap to a V6 yet, I just want to have my printer going well before any hardware modifications.
@@vegitoita Good idea. I have 3 of them. I had to get used to each, as they all have their own personalities. I also notice that as the weather changes (fall here) I have to adjust the beds and such. Make sure you are starting with a simple print like the cm cube I use. Get it dialed in then move to cooler stuff.
I've upgraded my hot end to all metal . Will marlin 2.0 allow temps of 270/280? if so, can anyone point me to a link as to how?
When you are setting up the marlin to match your new hot end you may be able to change the max # to fit that hot end. Which one did you snag?

Usually that's for probes, right? I generally only use manual leveling, so I do not have a clue on probes

The model's airflow fan must be turned on manually, settings in Cura do not help.

I have not noticed that issue. After a print starts can you control the fan via the control panel!
Is there any chance the fan is just set to off for the lower layers?
@@HLModTech Yes, before and after start print I can manually on the model's airflow fan, but it is not automatically like in original firmware.
No, in Cura settings the model's airflow fan should turn on on the second layer, but it is not start(
@@user-he4gp3tg4x would be interesting to see if a project sliced using PrusaSlicer worked. I would not picture the fan codes being something Keira would not send it correctly.

Usually the white screen is when a ET4 bin gets flashed instead of the ET4 Plus/Pro. Another thing to check is the pins. The ST-Link is notorious for having 1 pin different... That will always cause issues. Lastly if you want to go back to the original, flash the hex. It has the boot loader in it.

@@HLModTech hey I'm tacking this project again and i don't have the original file to flash. my ET4 plus just doesn't connect to the v2 st-link. it just keeps telling me to connect in reset mode which i cant find.
@@ArrowSmith95 2 things to check... Many ST-Link have the pins different. Make sure you match the labels... not just where I had them in the vid. The second would be having the printer on while you do it. I missed that step more than once, unfortunately. 🤦♂️

Is there any chance you flashed the wrong firmware? Which version of the ET4 are you working with?

Im getting a cannot connect to st link, ive doubke checked ghe pins numerous times and still have the error, any help would be appreciated
It also says "connect under reset" on the error message, but cant find that option in the settings
I have not run through it in a long time. One thing about the pins is that they can be labeled differently on the ST-Link. A lot of users mention catching that. Another thing is that the printer does need to be powered on. Keep me posted... I may think of something else too.
@@HLModTechI finally, literally 10 minutes ago, got it working. Wasnt able to make a backup because the printer kept disconnecting after a few seconds after connecting, also saying the voltage was to low, debug in low v mode didnt help at all... So once the target loaded i just flashed it (4 seconds) and now it seems fine, marlin loaded up, going to finish building my enclosure now and recalibrate the machine like it was new out of box and gonna start fresh because i kind of started in the middle, full of eagerness and excitement in this 3d printing stuff.
Ive watched this video probably 30 times in the past week trying to figure this out...
I use a dell xps which has usb c connection only so i had to use an adaptor, im going to assume that the adapter was throwing off the communication MAYBE.. Im just very glad its working now and i didnt brick the printer in that process.

@@HLModTech i have the anet et5x purchase last week just to try something new, i work with automotive electronics alot so figured this would be a cake walk. Problem was i had no experience at all with these printers and i skipped alot of things i didnt even know existed. Better off to start off fresh i feel.

i flashed marlin2+ on et4 using stlink it is success
but after that i tested auto home then x and y are working fine but z axis is not working, it is moving up few steps before reaching its high &it starts toward down and collide with bed i even tried to to reinstall firmware

So the ET4 original version homed up. The ET4+ and Pro homed down and had a sensor to detect the bed. Which version do you have?
@@HLModTech et4+ , I read on the Internet that somewhere there is not the correct code for the motherboard responsible for z offset, yes, I'll say more that I can't even move z offset by pressing on the screen))) I will be flashing it

It adds many options including calibrating your E-steps.

@@HLModTech hey so i up dated my et4 pro with et4 framwiere and if i try to go back to the pro it get stuck so its only working on the et4 how can i make it go back to the pro my printer says v3.0.0 but it also says et4
@@saittafpv5846 I have not tried the new 3.0 firmware yet. Can you try to flash a hex of the oldest pro firmware you can find?

That happens most often with you have not powered the printer on before trying to connect. You should also double check the wires and the labels. There have been reports that different ST-Link programmers have the pins in different orders.

I do not have one. =( I searched everywhere and no dice. It seems the original firmware should be on Anet's site, but I could not track one down just now. I think that would be the best place to hunt. Also asking in the Facebook groups. Those guys answer questions faster than piranha eat...

@@HLModTech He is correct, I purchased the ET4 Pro off Amazon and received the ET4+. They are the same except the bar colors are red not black.
