  • Open source Marlin firmware allows us options with our printer. Anet has heard, and using a ST-Link V2, it is pretty easy. These steps are for the ET4x. As always, when flashing firmware make sure you have the correct model for your printer. Anet has files you can download here.

    An awesome user Karl created a blog that showed how to recover or fix the ET4. I snagged a ST-Link and decided to give it a try and show you how it works.
    Link to Karl's Blog www.cnx-software.com/2020/02/...
    There was also a desire for the firmware to be open sourced. Today, I can say it is here. Marlin 2.0+ has been released and is available for you to customize to your heart's content. This is a link to the open source firmware github.com/anet-3d/Marlin/tre...

    Thanks for the easy to follow video. Question - I used these instructions and upgraded to the Marlin 2.0. a while back. Since I'm already running Marlin 2.0, if I want to upgrade Marlin to the newest 2.1.2.1, can I now just compile and upload to the ET4X directly from Visual Studio via USB cable, or do I still need to use the ST-Link and the bin file?

    • @HLModTech

      You will need the st link to do it.

    awesome, have marlin 2.0 running on my ET4X and set up for manual mesh bed leveling. I can't seem too find any tutorials but is it possible to modify the ET4X to install BLtouch? If possible could to do a video on how to do this? I assume it should be a possibility considering marlin can be tweaked to run with this set up, its just finding how to wire it up. I have seen a video for the A8 by crosslink and other printers but so far cannot find one for the ET4X, if it is even possible (The Daughterboard on my printer has the LV connector missing, but has the z stop switch connector)

    • @HLModTech
      @HLModTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would guess it is possible, but I do not mod printers. I can install firmware... but tweaking it is not something I have chosen to dig into. My best guess would be that someone on the Marlin Discord may be able to nudge you in the right direction. If you do find some cool stuff, feel free to share. Maybe I can be converted into a modder yet. =)

    Thanks for the bin file, its no longer on anet. I did find the the touch control is more difficult to navigate with marlin because of the small screen and text so Im debating if I should switch back. Also, can you update the firmware via sd card or usb after installing this or is the bootloader a separate bin?

    • @HLModTech
      @HLModTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have gotten pretty used to the touch screen, but you are right it took a bit. I have done the steps to update via SD, but I ended up selling that one. It worked fine, but I did not find it to be a game change. I really only update firmware when something is flaky. Those printers print for me daily without complaint. Hard to mess with that.

    • @i5usko
      @i5usko ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HLModTech yeah, the main reason I did it was because the included firmware was very buggy. It would even cause the machine to crash during homing and all sorts of issues if you clicked buttons in a certain sequences. It was like if you didn't use it exactly as they wanted it would not work.

    • @HLModTech
      @HLModTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have 2 of them that are still going strong. One does not have SD, so I can only run it via usb. It was a return that someone had actually ripped the sd card reader off it. Strangest thing I have ever seen but I sure do enjoy the machines for the price.

      @@heellgate666 You are welcome. If you learn to level a bed manually it pays off in the end. I have had more than 20 manual printers that I eventually got leveled and printed well. You start to hear and feel the right friction. In the long run, having that skill is worth more than an ABL system. My last 3 printers have had ABL built-in and I dig it. I am still glad I "cut my teeth" with all the manual rigs back in the day though.

      Changing firmware gives you the ability to calibrate it and it opens up the option for you to upgrade the firmware at any time. I’ve got a new ET5X that I have left stock because I can work just as I need and it just works. If you’re happy with the way they print when you get it I would leave it. If you want to dive in and change everything, then you can switch to Marlin but it doesn’t really solve anything. It just gives you things you can adjust that may or may not help.

      You will still have to level manually unless you add a ABL sensor. I have found that mine works fine with manual leveling. It takes some time to get it right, but once you have a system it is one less thing that can break.

    Would like to see a tutorial on marlin 2 with a BLtouch for these printers.
    It's crazy how anet is literally deleting people's posts when they ask how to do it, because they want to sell you an entire printer, just for auto leveling.
    Differences between the Anet ET4, and ET4X:
    Color:
    Blue - ET4X
    Red - ET4
    Z-Limit Switch:
    Bottom - ET4X
    Top - ET4
    Touch Sensor:
    No - ET4X
    Yes - ET4
    That's it.. there's no other differences, mainboard, screen, hardware, all is exactly the same.

    So I was having issues with the software itself. It would NOT save, load files or read the target. Appeared like everything worked but in reality nothing did. It would show as if it was doing something but the files would not open nor save. What I had to do was update the firmware of the ST-link doodad.
    To do that:
    1) Select ST-LINK -> Firmware Update. Try to update and it will say something like "ST-Link is not in the DFU mode".
    2) Disconnect the USB cable
    3) Reconnect the USB cable
    4) Press upgrade again
    5) You can now press YES bottom right to upgrade the firmware.
