As a young boy of only 4 years I saw a triumph TR4 driving in the road where I lived. I have loved these cars ever since and became a fan of all Triump sports cars (not so much the TR7). I live in the West midlands of Great Britain wher both Triumph and MG were built and as I grew older watched the generation of young drivers divide their loyalties between the two marques. I have owned both a Spitfire and an MGB but never filled my ambition of a TR4 TR4a TR5(250) or a TR6. The prices here now are more than many new executive cars with TR5's topping the list at around £50k GBP. I love watching your work, your skill, and your craftmanship. So sad that people have taken you for a ride, and not in the cars you have worked for them. Keep up the great work and video channel I watch more than any other. Thanks 👍👌
Ahh been a while since I’ve heard that intro music for Anna. Very grateful of Keith and Mary for being so generous for you to give us such great content / a journey.
Hi Elin, great to see Anna back on the channel. When I made the comment about the red GT6, I was going to say that it smelled like a fall out over money, but thought better of it just in case it offended your customer, but here we are. I know several companies here in the north of England that restore cars for a living. Every one of them has many stories like this. I know from my own projects, restorations just mushroom into mammoth money-eating entities. I am 70 now, and had all my working life in the electronics service industry, and can absolutely confirm that most customers expect you to work for nothing unfortunately, the worst ones being highly paid individuals who work for a company whose bosses take all the financial risks and hits. I was a craftsman and expert first and a businessman second, which is why I never amassed any great wealth. You are so good at what you do, but you will have to look after the business side of things as a priority. If you are restoring a car for a customer, all the good companies I know give the customer no price guarantees at all. They take an agreed deposit, then an agreed payment every month to cover labour and parts going into the project. As soon as the money stops, then so does the work. I really want you to succeed and make a good living out of your skills.
No disrespect, I’ve been watching since your original Sprite videos and am a Patreon. This, of course gives me no rights, just an opinion. Business or hobby, that’s the question. The two can co-exist but, friends that exist in my hobby ( like you and Chef Tush) are different than friends that are customers. I spent 30 years in aviation maintenance. The only guy cheaper than a car guy is an airplane guy (think big money), so I’m very familiar. NOT every car is a 100 point restoration and constant communication regarding money matters is key. Bob’s comments are spot on. On big jobs, getting some ( or more ) for yourself along the way is OK, it keeps your customer/friends invested in the project. When people are invested, it’s easier for them to understand when to pull the plug on the repairs. Thanks for the videos.
That is exactly how I work with all my customers. The only difference in this case was that I agreed to work with a 33% discount and I did not have anything in writing about our agreements during the process. In the beginning I gave him a very rough estimate and as soon as the work started, in the very early stages I called the guy to come and see, because I found things that made the estimate very incorrect. He could have pulled the plug at that time, the car was in one piece, nothing was cut, just the fiberglass was removed. But he gave me the go ahead. He paid every once in a while, whatever I asked him, but when the time came for the final payment for the metalwork he told me that we should stick to the initial estimate as that is what I told him. Of course since I have no proof of our further discussions I was screwed and I decided to pull the plug myself. I got some more money, but not everything and the bottom line was that I worked for 50% of my regular rate.... I was planning to finish the car for him, which was mentioned a few times, but since he wanted to stick to the initial number I decided to stick to the initial plan, which was only metalwork....
We were all younger when you started the journey with Anna! I hope after all this time that it becomes your crowning glory. God willing one day ( in the not too distant future please!) I will still be here to see you and Nic driving the Miata and Anna together. Bless you both 🙏
Thanks for going over the Anna story, its going to be one special car when your finished I hope you can go back to show the previous owners the car one day. We need your ramblings it adds greatly to story of each car. Good luck from Spain!!
Watching with a second cup of coffee while my workshop heats up so I can work on my MG. Great update of your GT6! Will be watching its progress as well as your other projects.
Great that you are working on your own cars again. Especially this car. My own project just passed seven years since restoration began. It is almost finished. Any year now ...........
It's crazy I started watching your channel while you where working on the tr6 and shortly after that you get Anna. I am feeling a little bit old now but I am happy that you continue this build
Great to see this back on the channel. The LED light issues are interesting. I was just ready to pull the trigger on buying some myself so maybe I’ll wait just a bit.
Elin, You know I have always been looking forward to being able to get back to ANNA, I have to say I was both excited and happy watching the video but also saddened that you again fall foul to such a lowdown experience. After all the hard work skill you put into giving him back a GT6 all the metalwork better than new. Added to that all the other trials you have been through, I'm so sorry for you. Now though watching cannot help but be excited and so glad your going take time every week for your own projects. I will be watching like an hawk the MK2 2ltr Vitesse engine I purchased turns over easily like yours so today I am busy getting it on an engine stand to copy you. All the best wishing for the future.
It was a lesson learned, so whatever. I am not losing sleep on it. It is important that there are so many good people out there who support me in any way possible. Everybody has issues in life every once in a while and I am not an exception. My engine is already apart, videos coming soon so hurry up putting yours on the stand :)
I'm pleased to see you are getting back to Anna and I look forward to following your progress. And I believe we all hope no more "life problems" get in your way, and you have smooth sailing in the future. Good luck on your journey of completing the restoration.
Great to see Anna out in the open (or sort of) and am really curious to see what's up in the engine. Since there is no compression I'm hoping the valves are just all stuck open. Wishful thinking? Perhaps. In any case, she's in good hands and we are all grateful you are finding time to work on her again.
Take a look at 8 foot fixtures that take 4 four foot led tubes. That way you can replace the bad tube and keep the fixture. I like 5000k double ended 24/28 watt four foot frosted tubes. Have a look on Amazon etc. I just put a load of them in my garage. I fitted large rocker switches on the ceiling so I can turn various lights on with a broom handle as required.
I got my '72 Gt6 about the same time as you got yours and have been following the build since. Don't feel bad, you've gotten more done since than I have. In my defense I have my own business to run, a project house, and 10 other car projects. But I will retire soon and then I'm looking forward to working on it. It has similar body issues to what yours had, so I paid particular attention to your repairs. BTW, I agree with you on the upholstery idea, my mother had an upholstery business and I absorbed enough I prefer to do my own.
I'm struggling to come to terms with it being over 3 years ago since you parked her up which means I must have been watching you for the best part of 5 years and I've still not had enough!
Well done Elin. Damson red excellent choice, same as I'm doing my 1969 Mk2 or as called over there gt6+. Been waiting for you to get crackalacking and finish this one. Good luck
I missed the premiere but was over here as soon as i saw it was live on facebook, and i am glad i dont have to fly to canadia to finish it for you as flights are expensive :D Welcome back ANNA
Elin, good to see ANNA back in the work! Thursday is just one day of the week, but also it is 52 days out of a year so that adds up to over 400 work hours towards getting her ready for the road trip! Good Luck and remember --- Voia este în tine. Also, she doesn't have to be 'pretty' to be roadworthy, she can be a 'work-in-progress' when you drive her to the 6-Pack Trials event.
Elin decades ago my family also fell apart and a beloved special wooden rowing boat fell into disrepair. I couldn't keep it either so I gave it to a longtime friend. He restored it with his retired Carpenter father and has taken his wife on many rows with it. In hindsight giving the boat to someone who would repair and take care of it is the best thing I could of done.
Elin, this is a long one about camshaft timing! Get a3” spirit level Jack up the front of the engine in the stand until it is level(using the spirit level) Find TDC. Back off the engine about 30deg. Fit the camshaft, head & rockers adjust #6 cyl rockers to .010” Turn the camshaft until #6 exhaust is open Fit the spirit level across the #6 rockers with a rubber band. Turn the camshaft until #6 is on valve overlap & the rockers are level Turn the crank to TDC Fit the chain. & sprockets ! Turn the crank & check the valve timing ! It will be really close!🔧🏴
Wow, that is interesting. I need to figure out why that works though. I am one of these guys that wouldn't just go with the procedure, because the manual says so. I need to understand the logic of it. I believe you it works, I just need to figure out why :)
I picked up a 72' GT6 about the same time and work on it also stopped. Hopefully I can get back to mine also. It's a shame the other long term projects turned out sour. Good Luck and stick to your own project.
I'm happy to see Anna getting attention again! The later GT6 are one of my favorite British cars (although there are many I love). Hope the engine is okay... That is worrisome, though. 😎
I am so happy to see you back on this car!!! it certainly is more relevant to my world because as I mentioned to you in the past, I learn so much when you do things and I’m on the stage where I’m working on the roller chassis. Thanks, Robert. Well, I am quite busy for sure, but if you send me some pictures to have a better idea of what needs done.... my email is elin.yakov@rustybeauties.com Send me an email and we can go from there. Cheers!
I certainly don’t want to overwhelm you with another project but if you can see the point where you’re not to overwhelm stuff to get done plus that beautiful 72 you’re working on then you can give me a shout and probably even if I get started on it and I see that I’m screwed stuff up more than I’m willing to wait. But I will at least try to get started on some of the things it looks like all my rocker panels enter cells and Stiffeners are all in really sound shape. My problematic areas are the rear valance the rear quarter fenders the front fenders where the bonnet is the whole front grill area front bonnet. Those are the real bad places. My floorboards have some pinhole in Manan but they’re not all the way my battery box on the bottom of that box that the tray part is literally gone but I have all new metal for quarter panels valances front back battery tray complete floorboards. I literally have it all.
Because I knew I would not get it this body for quite a while and living up here in Washington things rest quickly, so I acid dipped the whole tub, Bonnet doors and rear hatch acid. Debnam had them all cleaned out, washed off then the very day I got done with that which was down in Portland area. I drove all those parts up into Tacoma area, and they sat in a very dry workshop for about a week, and then they were cleaned again and prepped and then they were Apoxsee primed all of it so the whole car body is epoxy primed, and that was to illuminate any rust happening or flashing
Over this weekend I’ll take or have plenty of copious pictures but I have a lot of options for bonnets as a matter fact I’ve got three the original one and will see what you say to that +2 others and I’ll take photos of all three and I have all the metal, I think, with the exclusion of one bar to the inside of the bonnet in the rear
Looking ahead to this. BTW if you are getting charged duty on antique parts there is a problem. In Canada we do not pay duty on antique car parts. Often antique parts will come in with no GST charge as well. If you are getting charged duty there is form you can submit to get a refund. A pain in the neck I know. I have not paid any customs duty on car parts for about thirty years, when they became eligible. It doesn’t matter where the parts come from. Many years ago there was a preferential agreement with the UK but that is no longer the case. Some companies that sell on eBay charge a brokerage fee. I guess they take the customs fee. Not much you can do about that. Reputable parts suppliers like Rimmer or Moss know that parts come in duty free and even state that on their invoices for customs agents to see.
Thanks David! Well, I know the antique parts should be duty free, but I still get charged duty. The agencies just pretend they don't see the statement on the Moss invoice and keep charging me. Recently I started using a company that gets them in a US mailbox and then imports them for me to Canada. I need to fill up a form with the origin and cost of each part and there is no way to describe the parts as antique. I spoke to someone, but they couldn't help. Whatever, the duty is not the issue. It is a small percentage only on some parts made in some countries. The GST and customs fees are the bummer.
Hopefully you'll get it finished for the 6-Pack Trials. If you do, I'll drive from Virginia to PA to see it and meet you in person. I feel like I really know you after watching your videos for several years. Would be great to meet you and buy you a beer.
Anna smanna. I want to see Rusty start his own YT channel. He'll spotlight hours of Elin throwing the rope, tips on tricking your human into playtime, and lessons in filming interruption (both inside and outside of the shop.) 🤣
One more thing Elin, you should never put oil on the back of the bearing shells ! The block/ connecting rods & the shells must be fitted dry !!! Regards, Sandy 🔧🏴
I think with long term projects you need to get paid every month or so that way if payments are not forthcoming then you can stop. It's hard to try and get all the money at one go when you have finished the whole project. It's a lesson we all have to learn I think.
If I was leaving quite near to you I would love to work with you working with your cars with your GT6 it would be good if you could upgrade your engine to a 2.5 p i with 3-manifolds and put in as well power steering so when you open the Bonnie up you have a sweet 2.5 p i engine straight six with 3-manifolds instead having car breakers
There’s a saying how do you make 1 million dollars restoring old cars,,,, start with 2 million it’s a tuff row to how trying to restore cars on your own for people you think you know…deposits and progress payments will save you from ruin

Yeah, but it is shorter than the GT6 one so hopefully less stress on the stand

I think with long term projects you need to get paid every month or so that way if payments are not forthcoming then you can stop. It's hard to try and get all the money at one go when you have finished the whole project. It's a lesson we all have to learn I think.
Oh yeah, that is how I work. It wasn't one go. Just the last payment, which happened to become bigger than usual.
would like to find another 72-73 gt6 mkiii
If I was leaving quite near to you I would love to work with you working with your cars with your GT6 it would be good if you could upgrade your engine to a 2.5 p i with 3-manifolds and put in as well power steering so when you open the Bonnie up you have a sweet 2.5 p i engine straight six with 3-manifolds instead having car breakers
I would not leave a car body on its' side for too long, it may distort
The GT6 is pretty sturdy with its roof
There’s a saying how do you make 1 million dollars restoring old cars,,,, start with 2 million it’s a tuff row to how trying to restore cars on your own for people you think you know…deposits and progress payments will save you from ruin
😂 true. Yeah, that is how it was here. I got partial payments as I was working. The first time a payment was a problem I pulled the plug.
