@@russcooke5671 Out of curiosity, why the TR5 specifically? Isn't it the same body as the TR4? Speaking of Triumphs, the TR3 I find to really capture the spirit of the sports cars of its era with the cut down doors and the introduction of integrated fenders as opposed to the open fenders of the MGs until the MGA came along and introduced an entirely new body style.

I love the looks of these. Michelotti was on his game.
But he isn’t kidding. I’m a relatively short, fit man and getting into my Spitfire with the hardtop on was tricky for me. I recall backing up, sitting down and an awkward twisting leg movement.
And even with electronic overdrive on mine 55 mph was the top speed at which engine noise didn’t ruin the drive.
Mine probably needed a weather seal but I also got a ton of engine smell in the cabin from having the bonnet fit laterally at the passenger door.

Hi, Definitely climbing in and out of the GT6 is awkward for the older or larger types. yet i recall back in the day when I was doing just that with ease! We haven't suffered any engine odours in the car and I cannot recall doing so with GT6s or TR6s during the seventies, maybe it's a Spitfire trait?

I owned one of this car's cousins (in the early 70s) - a Mk 2 Vitesse convertible. I really don't remember the engine sound being so obtrusive as to limit conversation - even with the hood up, charging up the M1 with a friend next to me in the front and another in the back. But, oh what an engine note - lovely music; I think I still prefer its sound to that of the BMW E39 523i that I owned many years later. Driving the Vitesse through the Peak District with the hood down really was such a treat for the senses. Later in life, my Triumph 2500 TC's engine note used to turn heads as I drove it slowly through my residential suburb. Thanks for the video. Long live the straight 6 engine!

Brings back memories. Your car looks great. First time I ever saw dual exhaust on a GT6. I had a '67 GT6 as my first car in 1973. It definitely taught me how to repair cars. Full tune-up especially the carbs every 2 weeks. Just sit on the tire and put you feet down between the tire and the engine. You are correct about the rear end being lose; absolutely no weight on it. Because of the swing axles on the '67, the rear end was always trying to race the front and the car swapping ends. Made autocross really difficult.
Mine was not under powered. At a stoplight I could stay up with a standard 289 '67 Mustang until we got to 60mph. The owner before me had really worked over the engine; it started to lope below 1000 rpm and quit running at the normal 600 rpm idle. When I had the overdrive ratio differential in it; I could red line 4th gear at half throttle. I went through 2 transmissions, 2 differentials, a dozen u-joints, etc. in 30 K miles. Fun to drive but expensive to keep running.

I hit the "like" button as soon as I saw the thumbnail of your GT-6. What a gorgeous ride; the beautiful lines of that coupe and the perfect interior. These and the MGB-GT were the cars that made my heart skip a beat back in the day. Especially that treat of an exhaust note in direct contrast to the muscle cars that populated the area in the mid/late Sixties and early Seventies. The GT's big brother, the TR-6 was my particular favorite; still is, although rarely seen around here in the U.S. in the Turnpike State, AKA (Southern) New Jersey.
Your video was quite nice, except for the totally ill-advised, unnecessary and very distracting musical accompaniment. Much prefer the "music" of the machine!

I had two of these during my time in UK from 1988 into the 1990s. First was a Mk. III in white, stock vehicle. I later sold that had bought another Mk.III in Mimosa with a 2.5L engine from a Triumph saloon. The bigger engine transformed the car into a real tourer. I had a mate in London who had a Mk.II and we'd regularly drive through the Heathrow tunnel late at night side by side and the noise of the two 6-cylinders off the walls put a huge grin on your face. I thought they they were terrific cars, if a little on the small side inside. To be honest the MGB GT was much better in this respect and it didn't suffer as much with heat soak like the GT6 did. Summer in a GT6 was like being in a mobile sauna ha ha. My mates Mk.II had a Webasto - that made a huge difference. Later in the UK I had a MGC GT and after that a MGB GT V8. French Blue in a GT6 like yours was a superb colour followed by Mimosa with Sundym Glass. I still think a straight 6 engine beats even a V8 for sound in some cases. I also owned a Mk.1 manual Triumph saloon also during my time in UK and loved driving that with its 6-cylinder and overdrive. Have fun.

Hi, Thanks for the like. I had a couple of TR6s back in the day and enjoyed taking it through the Dartford tunnel with the top down. Yes, the sound of the six-cylinder and twin-pipe exhaust is really something in a tunnel environment. The GT6 still has a good sound and though we're determined to keep this one in standard condition we're toying with the idea of a second with a TR6 lump fitted. As you say it would make a great tourer with the extra power.

I recall now another GT6 Mk.III I had the good fortune to see during my time in UK. It was owned by a friend of a friend in Cornwall and was totally stock on the outside but the engine was a highly modified 2.5L, lightened flywheel, Cosworth pistons, modified head with three Weber carbs - sounded magnificent. There are two interesting Triumphs 4 sale here in Oz at the moment, a Triumph Vitesse and a 2500S estate - both cars have programmable fuel injection.

You may not have seen in my initial comment that I did own a Mk. I Triumph manual saloon, excellent car. As to the Vitesse, I've driven a few, silky smooth engine but a bit crude with the separate chassis etc. compared to the GT6 which also had a chassis, being stiffer of course due to being a 'closed' coupe body.

I alway thought that triumph should have put the 2.5 Engine in the GT6 it would have been a very fast car. Because it was 300 kilos lighter then the TR6. The GT6 is driven by the seat of your pants, there's no other way to describe it. You really have to grow accustomed to its foibles before playing with it. Needs overdrive! Nice to drive because of the engine’s great torque at low revs but not ‘sporty’ in the normal sense because the suspension was iffy even on the MkIII. I don’t recognise the ‘drifting round corners’ but I do remember the front end’s awful lack of grip getting me into trouble occasionally. Look carefully and you see it had POSITIVE camber. @@stillmotoring5613 So true, had an Opel Gt and a 1900 rally back in the late 60's and 70's. I got a chance to drive a neighbors Spitfire with overdrive. Wow what a different feel, even with the 4 cylinders giving it all it's got. The Opel's had a higher CG and couldn't keep up in the corners, but I could fly bye on the Straits. Always liked the GT6 fastbacks. Thanks for sharing yours! CHEERS

I blame 14 years plus of GT6 ownership for my bad back. You have to be twisted to operate the controls. As I get older, I conclude it was not worth the pain.

The GT6 is simply a stunning design. Compared to the MG GT it's rival it outclasses in every way. Shame they where so badly built.

They weren't that badly built and the 2.0 motor proved very reliable. It's unfair comparing build quality in the seventies to what it is today. In the seventies I and my family owned several Triumphs and they proved better than many other mass manufacturers. Our latest GT6 has been rebuilt from the chassis up with a few modernizations to the suspension which improves handling, but the engine is the same as it was in 1972. Lots of grunt as the 6 cylinder engine has tremendous torque.

"Mint" is the wrong word, as the case is neither original, nor restored to factory spec. Nice car, but not as-original and therefore not "mint."

I disagree. The GT6 has been totally restored and is as good as if it just rolled out of the factory. In my opinion that is good enough to call it mint, but thanks for your comment.

I am sorry you feel you have to make a comment that derides our GT6 because we have the paperwork and full comprhensive image history to prove you wrong. This is an original GT6. I've also owned many Triumphs in my time including a TR6s, GT6s, Spitfires and many saloons. But thanks for your interest.

Hi Marc, Even by today's standards because of its diminuitive size and low slung style the GT6 still feels rapid and in Mark 3 guise has more than fair road holding and handling capabilities. I know I'm biased but it is an amazing machine.
