My dad got me one of these for my last birthday. Pros: Action Steel Scales Blade shape Cons: Sloppy factory edge(easy for a professional sharpener to fix) Liner is rough on the edge I'd prefer a recessed deep-carry clip. Good knife for the price overall
It’s not their first ball bearing pivot. But first ball bearing flipper I do believe. Mine came perfect all around out of the box. I’d say it was an early production fluke. Great review!!!
Good from far -- far from Good ! I have owned one for 4 yrs. Bearings get contaminated easily. Mine has been cleaned & oiled and it now squeaks at the pivot. For more longevity / severe duly.... yep bushings
bought a ZT 0550 half a decade ago and i didn't have to go out to buy another edc folding knife ever since. looks like that knife will serve me, my son, my grandsons and so forth. it'll probably become my $140 family heirloom
Great video. It's nice to see Gerber produce a knife that matches their former "legendary" reputation. Looking forward to purchasing this one. I also bought the Kershaw Link with the M390 steel. It has been years since I have seen Gerber produce a knife that was worthy of their brand name.
I have gerber usa made knives gator 154cm drop point $75 cad and EZ-Out dpsf in S30V $67 cad , two of each amazing prices for good steels imho great reviews as always thanks
that does kinda look like it could compete with a 940, i know its probably way heavier and its missing a bunch of those features but for half the price im digging it.
Like you, I perfer an unassisted opening knife. My favorite EDC is a Benchmade 940. Although the Fastball sounds great, it'll be hard for me to go from the Axis lock to a liner lock. Thank you for another through and unbiased review.
Can someone please tell manufacturers to start putting deep carry clips on their knives? I loath having a knife sticking halfway out of my pocket while carrying it. This looks like a great knife but the clip is a dealbreaker
Livn Biggr I have both. The bareknuckles is much bigger, not even worth a comparison because it’s out of its size range. Both are great though. Though I’ve had some QC issues with my bareknuckles
I was interested in this knife, but wondered how it compared to my HOB "Back the Blue" modified Dividend that I love with all my heart so I appreciate that you put those two knives next to each other. My Dividend was $10 cheaper, has slightly better steel, deep carry pocket clip and I think it has a better color combination. Personally I love the assist so that's not an issue for me. Looks ilke no reason to get the Fastball, but it's great that Gerber is making some better stuff. For anyone who can't stand the Kershaw assist, the Gerber looks like a good option.
Hi there my very first Gerber knife was the Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival Pro which snapped the first time I used it bushcrafting. I then got two Gerber One Flip Knives few we affectionately call them the Gerber Never Flip. I then contacted Gerber directly in America under the warranty offer they sent me the sage Fastball & the completely black Fastball I must say they are most impressive they are my first USA made knives to now that's no big thing to some people I live in Wales UK so a lot of the Gerber & Kershaws available to us here are made in China 0 Goodness in such pieces I'm proud to say I have a 100% all Amarican designed and built knife in my collection that actually works.
Love your review I have this knife on order expecting it in a few days. I currently own a Gerber Propel and love its functionality and rigid build qualities. It too has S30 V steel with a razor sharp Tanto blade. Cant wait to own another Gerber with a Wharncliff style blade!
I purchased a Gerber Fastball, it takes quite a bit of pressure from your index finger before it will flip open, quality is great typical of Gerber USA, my Kershaw opens quicker and with less finger pressure, and the price is a bit high at $120.00
I have seen videos of others with bad QC. I like the design but personally I would get the dividend just due to how thing it is. Even though I like non assisted over assisted and s30v or 420hc, I would get the Kershaw
I looked at two of these in person today at a shop and both had the liner nearly touching the right scale with the blade open. I almost pulled the trigger on the green version until I saw that.
Great review. Really solid for that price point, and would take it over any of those comparisons. Not a Gerber fan at all, but I do have an 06 Auto that is a great knife. So they do have the ability to make some quality stuff if they want to.
I'll need to see more than one positive review on this Gerber before I pull the triger. Good for them if this the quality we can now expect from them. Good review, sir.
Bruce McConnell Cutlery lover did a review on one and he loves his as well. Same quality. I’ve had one for over a month. It’s a light weight workhorse and feels like a ZT.
Compared to a Kershaw Leek 1660OL (I understand this is assisted opening knife, but is wonderfully smooth), or with the different blade option now available for the fastball, the clever type blade, which would you prefer?
I’m still unsure on this one for me. Once it’s open, it’s beautiful. It feels like it was designed for my hand. But opening it is an issue. I’ve had mine since Thursday and I’ve misfired a LOT when genuinely trying to open it. It has such a slim and sleek profile that opening it under any sort of direst would be a challenge. The smoothness of the handles and the strength of the clip make it tricky to get out of the pocket. But dang it feels so good once it’s open! 😂😂😂😩😩😩
This knife instantly reminds me of the Dividend. I also prefer manual but The Fastball seems a little clunky. As you've experienced here in the video, the action isn't all that impressive and the flipper tab is big and rough. (The quality control questions don't help either.) If you can accept assisted action, the Dividend has a nicer overall form factor and comes in S35VN or M390 for less than what this costs. If manual matters, there are so many great options out there with less issues for less money.
There are much better knives for a little more or less, the Kershaw Bareknuckle or Knockout, my typical EDC is a Spyderco PM2 with a Lynch Clip, but I also have a Bareknuckle and Knockout, Zero Tolereance 0462, CRKT Home front, SOG Aegis (one of my favorite EDC's), Benchmade Bugout Gray, and a Zero Tolerence 0300 that all get pocket time at one time or another. Dont get to wrapped up in steel, there are lots of great steels out there, I just picked up a Artisan Cutlery Tomahawk with D2, it is a little big for EDC but I wouldnt hesitate to buy another of their D2 (budget) knives because the dit finish amd build quality is incredible compared to allot of other knives in that price range. Yes Artisan Cutlery is made in China, but the Kershaws that are made in the USA are better knives IMO than any of the Gerbers. I have had several problems with Gerber knives, they have come loose, dull, and with bent pocket clips, and from reading through some of the comments it seems they are still having the same issues
IMO there’s no excuse for these companies not shipping with a deep pocket carry clip. The vast majority of people prefer the deep pocket clip type, and the companies continue to ship with regular old, non-deep-pocket clips. I don’t get it.
Pretty skewed comparison... You should be comparing products in similar price bracket. The Kershaw Dividend in M390 @ $76.95 or the Delica in ZDP @ $110.50 will be much better options.
I have the same problem with bladehq, their videos have popups that are so loud compared to their speaking volume. Love both channels but constantly adjusting volume lol
It must be hard for US companies to find anyone who can grind a blade. Kershaw is horrible, even my last $260 ZT had an uneven grind. All of my Bestech, Reate or WE knives..perfect edges.
For $100 I don't think you can over look a benchmade bugout. I would have to ask the question is it better than a bugout for this price? Benchmade also an American company and it comes with a lifetime warranty. I do understand the bugout cost more but it is a small price to pay for 1.8oz. Of American perfection.
They did their research. Ha. "Hey guys, see that Kershaw, let's make one of those. Except more expensive and with less quality control!" Sounds great team! Also, don't make it a frame lock, we know we'll fuck that up, and put a boring ass clip on it as well.
Magnum Mountaineer I know right?! People would give to craps if there precious Spyderco came that way. They would just do like you said. And Spyderco have been known to do that. But because it’s Gerber people instantly give them hell. If your gonna complain about centering that you can fix. Than your a whiny bitch. If the centering is not fixable, then that’s fine. People are so biased it’s not even funny.
I'm definitely interested in getting a Fastball on sale at some point, but I think most people would end up opting for a Mini Griptilian S30V, Dividend M390, or Manix 2 Lightweight S30V -- all of which are US made and have equivalent or superior steel for a lower price.
It’s all personal preference. I really don’t like the leek, and I do like the look of this knife. That said...$100 is simply too much for this knife, especially when Gerber is just trying to be taken seriously in this scene. The Kershaw Leek and Dividend are equal or better quality at less than half the price.
@Magnum Mountaineer I think a lot of people are a bit miffed at benchmade at the moment, so some people might dismiss that out of hand. That said, I picked up a Dividend and I do love it. Really nice knife considering the relative bargain price.
@Magnum Mountaineer It appears they have donated to anti-2a candidates and stuff in the recent past, and maybe the less recent past as well. Some people believe it was to "grease the skids" so to speak, others believe they're truly anti-2a and had tried to hide it all along. I think it's much ado about very little or nothing, but plenty of people seem to be taking their grinders or drill presses to their benchmade knives.
@@gideonstactical yes it was (which was a disappointment for me) but did run on their "Balls of Stainless Steel" system which allowed the close to be very "drop shuty" until you had to overcome the assist.

This Gerber fast ball knife sucks! I bought one because of all positive reviews here on YT. Straight from the box, in less than one hour, the pocket clip was hanging on only one loose screw. Where is your lifetime warranty when you loose your knife because of that? You can't proof it. The grinding from the edge was also terrible. I send it back to the hardware store to swap it for a new one. I told them to send me some close up pics. from the edge first. Same terrible grinding. I asked for refund. I send a mail to Gerber USA about the issue and got reply from Fiskars Sweden??? Fiskars Sweden told me that the hardware store where i bought the Gerber Fastball knife was not one of their customers. That's it! Great service isn't it? It cost me a lot of time with all the mail contact and money for diesel to drive two times to the post office totally 64 km. This was a month ago and i,m still pissed off!
My dad got me one of these for my last birthday.
Pros:
Action
Steel
Scales
Blade shape
Cons:
Sloppy factory edge(easy for a professional sharpener to fix)
Liner is rough on the edge
I'd prefer a recessed deep-carry clip.
Good knife for the price overall
Yesssss! Couldn’t wait for this review from you, really want this knife.
Definitely interesting and cool to see the premium steel w/ super un-assisted action. Great work by Gerber and good review!!
I feel like if the 940 didn’t exist this may have been my primary knife. I love what Gerber did. Glad to see them designing good stuff again.
It’s not their first ball bearing pivot. But first ball bearing flipper I do believe. Mine came perfect all around out of the box. I’d say it was an early production fluke. Great review!!!

Looks very similar to the Kershaw Dividend don’t ya think?
yep.
Similar looks. But the Gerber has better steel, and no stupid speedsafe.
Great video. It's nice to see Gerber produce a knife that matches their former "legendary" reputation. Looking forward to purchasing this one. I also bought the Kershaw Link with the M390 steel. It has been years since I have seen Gerber produce a knife that was worthy of their brand name.
Hinderer Gen 6 3" detent ball works the same way the Fastball does when closing, beautiful blade!
Dang! A good gerber edc flipper. They should have called this the Gerber curveball! lmao.
That is the funniest knife related thing I've read in a long long time I have seen the last 5 years of TH-cam
I have gerber usa made knives gator 154cm drop point $75 cad and EZ-Out dpsf in S30V $67 cad , two of each amazing prices for good steels imho
great reviews as always thanks
that does kinda look like it could compete with a 940, i know its probably way heavier and its missing a bunch of those features but for half the price im digging it.
I have for awhile now been staying away from Gerber. This knife interests me though. Can they keep it up though?
Their is no reason why gerber can not keep it going .if they can make a knife this good then they can keep makeing good knifes .their is no excuse .
Gerber has really stepped up their game with great USA made knives over the past few years.
Like you, I perfer an unassisted opening knife. My favorite EDC is a Benchmade 940. Although the Fastball sounds great, it'll be hard for me to go from the Axis lock to a liner lock. Thank you for another through and unbiased review.
I'd be in, but that huge flipper tab is a no go. Kershaw dividend in m390
You really knocked it out of the park with those baseball puns in the intro
Can someone please tell manufacturers to start putting deep carry clips on their knives? I loath having a knife sticking halfway out of my pocket while carrying it. This looks like a great knife but the clip is a dealbreaker
Just bought this knife. Looking forward to using it.
Nice word play on opener
I was thinking you’d throw in a Kershaw Bareknuckle for comparison. Thoughts on this and Fastball?
Livn Biggr I have both. The bareknuckles is much bigger, not even worth a comparison because it’s out of its size range. Both are great though. Though I’ve had some QC issues with my bareknuckles
Hunter Glaspell okay, thanks for that insight. Didn’t realize they were so different in size.

Looks like a good candidate for a detent ball ramp modification.
Steel Will Modus G10-M390 can be gotten near $100 if you keep an eye out for it. I’d take that over the Gerber
Gerber Instant and US Assist both have ball bearing pivots
I purchased a Gerber Fastball, it takes quite a bit of pressure from your index finger before it will flip open, quality is great typical of Gerber USA, my Kershaw opens quicker and with less finger pressure, and the price is a bit high at $120.00

good looking knife,i have always liked thier U.S.A made fixed blades,i really hope Gerber gets thier Q.C dialed in with thier folders.thanks AARON;-)
Surprised it was only $100. Thanks Aaron. Great video, great 🇺🇸 made tool.
Ride Alongside the materials are from over seas. It is assembled in the USA

Gerber make a Deep Carry Pocket Clip
Thanks Aaron for another great review. I like this knifes design but i don't like the price. Imo there's better knives for a cheaper price.
It's not their first with ball bearings. The first was the US assist, and I think you reviewed it.
At a quick glance, it looks similar to my House of Blades S35VN Kershaw Dividend.
Compared to a Kershaw Leek 1660OL (I understand this is assisted opening knife, but is wonderfully smooth), or with the different blade option now available for the fastball, the clever type blade, which would you prefer?

Kershaw has made a dividend in m390 for 90 bucks. Both are great knives 👊😎

Somehow you have to return every first knife from Gerber 😯
Awesome Gerber knife for the price Aaron an thanks for showing it Sir.
I would prefer the SOG Terminus XR you didn’t mention that one
Jeff Hollar that’s true but the steel is not as good
gideonstactical that’s true I wish they would upgrade that steel the knife is great
What would you think of adding the Fastball to an ankle mounter urban E&E kit?
Wait what's your plan?
Just get a kershaw dividend in m390 for even cheaper and better quality
Same
I was looking for a first flipper/folder. And I may have just found it.
That is tough. Probably.
I like tip down knives and delia size EDC. Venturing into flippers.
I’ve occasionally watched your videos and just subscribed after reading you About section.
Good video and now I can live with buying one and not regretting it
2 me it's like a combo of a Tops MSK Folder and a B.M. 940
IMO there’s no excuse for these companies not shipping with a deep pocket carry clip. The vast majority of people prefer the deep pocket clip type, and the companies continue to ship with regular old, non-deep-pocket clips. I don’t get it.
Hickeroar i will be doing a video on this soon
Does the detent break in over time
Pls make a review of the versafix pro gray
Pretty skewed comparison... You should be comparing products in similar price bracket. The Kershaw Dividend in M390 @ $76.95 or the Delica in ZDP @ $110.50 will be much better options.
If they had made a deep carry clip I’d be all about it
Why do they put lanyard holes on small EDC folders? Seems pointless.
Awesome review man love the channel!
Any chance you could mute the title "shing" at least 50%? It's REALLY loud compared to your speaking volume levels.
I have the same problem with bladehq, their videos have popups that are so loud compared to their speaking volume. Love both channels but constantly adjusting volume lol

Good job Gerber....you're only about 5-7 years late to the bearing/flipper knife party.
This is the only Gerber I've ever considered for 100 bucks hmmmm dunno I think you can do better
Blur S30V ?
Cool
They did their research. Ha. "Hey guys, see that Kershaw, let's make one of those. Except more expensive and with less quality control!" Sounds great team!
Also, don't make it a frame lock, we know we'll fuck that up, and put a boring ass clip on it as well.
Oh..... almost forgot Gerber no longer has customer service stuff, no working phone #. Ugghh
I have one it's dull. The screws came loose on pocket clip not worth the money buy a spider co instead
Stewart White *spyderco lol. And you could just send it in to warranty and have it replaced
It also has bad milling an there's a weird detent when you try to close the knife. You shouldn't have to send a 100 dollar pocket knife back.
Stewart White well then you haven’t dealt with benchmade lol. Mine came perfect. So I’d say yours was a fluke
Good thing it's not a benchmade

CRKT Fossil by Ikoma
Got one ordered from Drop
Got this for 74$ Great knife.
It reminds me of a Kershaw
1. Find a Spyerco Myrtle
2. Buy it
3. Cut something with it
4. Thank me
Any blade play in a hundred dollar knife is unacceptable.

Blade shape, aluminum scales, flipper(not assisted) but a similar flipper. Dividend, dividend, dividend
What would you rather buy, this or a really nice kershaw leak

Gotta be a significant price difference. No? I haven’t checked
Compare to any USA made kershaw

Benchmade Mini griptillian
