Hey everyone Adam Simmons here from Dgtl Infra, short for Digital Infrastructure. New York City is a unique place for its cultural, financial, and entertainment offerings. But what also makes the city unique is how its residents get their wireless connectivity.
Unlike most places in America, New York City is so dense that it makes it difficult, and in most cases near impossible to provide connectivity with traditional 100-foot-plus cellular towers.
In this video, we show you the digital infrastructure that connects New Yorkers with their 4G/LTE and 5G service. Primarily, this infrastructure takes the form of what are known as “small cells” and “rooftop sites”.

Does one small cell on a light pole support just 1 carrier or can it support multiple carriers? Who also owns most of the fiber ran to these small cells?
Small Cells can support multiple carriers / tenants. Currently, the "goal" is to get 2 to 3 carriers (e.g., Verizon and T-Mobile) on each small cell node. However, in "reality" there are many small cells that only have one carrier, given that this a new type of digital infrastructure (lease-up takes times).
Fiber providers (known as "dark" fiber) for small cells include Zayo, Crown Castle, Uniti Group, Lumen Technologies, and more. @@DgtlInfra Nice! Thanks for the response. I know here in the Bay Area there's a lot of AT&T Fiber ran to AT&T and TMobile sites. I haven't ran any AT&T fiber to Verizon sites. I don't know how big or if AT&T owns fiber like that in New York so I figured maybe it was Verizon if not AT&T. Like here in the Bay Area, I learned AT&T owns a lot of infrastructure and central offices so other companies will run their connections like fiber from AT&T Central Offices.
@@TechxGremlin Yes, you are absolutely right. The carriers do own a lot of the fiber and other infrastructure that they use - it is just hard for us know precise figures because they do not disclose it publicly as much.
