I wrote an academic research paper a couple of years ago (for my Master's degree) on Art Deco architecture, especially so the designs of Joseph Bell DeRemer and the architectural dream team of Charles Buechner & Henry Orth. Those talented architects did an abundance of architectural work in North Dakota and Minnesota, most of which is still standing and still in use. The Chrysler Building in Manhattan is a perfect example of the beauty and style of the Art Deco era. This video was a delight to me, a nerdy history and architecture fan. Thanks!
I'd pay good money to hear a full lecture from Michael. Everything he observes is incisive and explained concisely, and with so much enthusiasm. Great video.
My absolute favourite building in Manhattan. I was lucky enough to visit when I was in NYC shooting backgrounds for Kubrick's 'Eyes Wide Shut'. Thank you for posting this video.
As someone who grew up in NYC its easy to get "blind" to these marvels after awhile. The pace gets you focused on specific things, and you can forget to stop and appreciate the history of this amazing city. Michael Wyetzner breaks it down so well, and you can see his excitement.
The Chrysler building is my favorite structure all time. So beautiful, classy and iconic. It's a shame that public building tours aren't offered anymore. Great architectural breakdown!
After having seen so many buildings in so many cities, I've developed a greater fascination in the offerings of the late 1920's. Those buildings just seem to capture my imagination more than those of the '30's.
It is the most beautiful building ever built. Thank you for inviting me to tour, inside and outside.never will another building ever be built with such detail.🕊🇺🇲💕 New jersey
I love Mr Wyetzner's videos and could watch and listen to them all day. It'd be awesome to tour NYC or any city with him and learn about the architecture of all the buildings and houses. Thank you for these videos!
I love the Chrysler building so much.. the art deco style is one of my favourites and an architectural design that can’t be replicated today. Every detail is stunning.
Compare the Chrysler Building feature at 3:36 to the Chrysler ad at 9:45! Thank you for the video. Most commentators point out the eagle hood adornments, but I never noticed the winged radiator caps before.
Such a great explanation, when the first time I came to nyc, I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought that The Chrysler Building was The Empire Building.Because it's so stand out of the other buildings ,even The Empire Building isn't as beautiful as Chrysler ,but of course my personal opinion.
I truly enjoy this architect's various videos on the AD YT channel. I hope there's many more to come! I'm learning a lot of terminology and enjoy seeing America's most beautiful and historical buildings.
What a wonderful video. The beautiful ornate crown of the Chrysler Building somehow has a resemblance to the pinnacle crowns of the Petronas Twin Towers in KL, Malaysia.
Most tourists visiting Midtown Manhattan are drown towards the Empire State Building. Most architecture passionates however are drown towards the Chrysler Building. Don't get me wrong, the Empire State is also a splendid representation of Art Deco which rightfully deserves its own praise and appreciation, but the Chrysler is just absolutely spectacular.
My very favorite building of all time! My first trip to New York was primarily to see it in person. New York very easily became my favorite place in the world!
Art Deco, like Expressionist Art in film and painting, was a very modernist departure from pre-World War I schools of design, as there seemed a strong desire to leave a traditional 'past' behind, and look to the future. I think they're the answer to the Bauhaus style, which left a sense of 'delight' absent, but which Deco embraced. The Chrysler building is loved by people who have never been to NYC. Thanks for the tour, and for the terrific breakdown of the elements that define this wonderful building. :)
It's a shame this iconic building will be blocked when the new tall building gets completed that will apparently have a higher rooftop than CPT which is currently USAs highest rooftop
I disagree. It will be interesting to see the built heritage on that section of 42nd street when 175 Park Avenue is completed. Well, the whole stretch of 42nd street is a gold mine of architecture marvels.
I could not agree more! My only hope is that the developer, similar to Vornado and their planned series of towers around Penn Station, may be getting cold feet about constructing such a gargantuan tower in this work from home era.
@@EliF-ge5bu blocking an iconic building like the Chrysler building is not something to be fine with. You can disagree that's fine, but that new super tall building should be built at least a block away, blocking my favourite building in New York City is such a shame
Coming from LA, my interest in Art Deco was peaked by the Eastern Columbia Building, the Wiltern Theater and the former landmark, Pan-Pacific Theater. As beautiful as they are/were, none compare to the amazing Chrysler Building. The most iconic AD building ever!
When I lived in New York City, for a while my dentist had his office on the 72nd floor of the Chrysler Building. The view out the window (one of those triangle windows at the top) showed the curvature of the earth. Just fascinating! The lobby is gorgeous.
That’s Bollox. A cute tale but not possible. You’d need to be lots higher, curvature of the Earth is visible from about 35,000 feet! Chrysler building is less than 1000 feet. Anyway, how the hell can you see the curvature if you can’t see the horizon? Liar, delusional or idiot?
@@JulieWallis1963 So you're denying what I saw with my own eyes, not once but many times? Well, maybe you should go up to the 72nd floor of the Chrysler Building yourself before you debunk what I saw.
Chrysler bldg. is my favorite in NY. I had the pleasure of going to School for several months in that building. It was the only time I was excited to go to school, walking up to and into that building every day was magical. Just after that, I got a job just 3 blocks away on Lexington Ave. Walked out of Historic and just as beautiful Grand Central, to view the Chrysler Building everyday, was inspiring and at lunch, walking past the Waldorf Astoria.
The two times (so far) I've visited NYC, I've said that the Chrysler Building 'flirts' with me - because it seemed that whenever I looked up, I could see the crown (or more) peeking around the buildings I was surrounded by at the time. The next visit I make to NYC, I will finally make a pilgrimage to my beloved Chrysler Building.
i always thought this too as a tourist! it always caught my eye! i now work at the chrysler building, talk about a full circle moment! but i'm replying to say that they sadly don't let tourists in :( always makes me sad when tourists walk in with starry eyes and are turned away immediately, i hope they open it back to the public sometime soon!
frank lloyd wrights midway gardens is one of my favorites and it is so tragically underdocumented and unrecognized. an unsung masterpiece. love the chrysler building, especially crossing over from brooklyn at night, new york city at night in general, but the chrysler building in particular.
I don't know anything about architecture but I loved watching this video, and all the others with Mr Wyetzner. He can communicate his passion really well and make us as interested in it as he is.
Love the Chrysler Building! My grandfather worked in it at some point in his career. I would have loved to have been able for him to give me tour of his office and the building overall!
If I had to name an artwork I love more than any other, it would be the Chrysler Building. It's elegant and showy but not overly vulgar in its opulence. I love that building so much that when my husband bought my engagement ring, he chose it based purely on the fact that it reminded him of the Chrysler Building. Thank you so much for talking about this beautiful structure.
My favourite building in NY! I always stop to stare at it when I visit. I love all the art deco details and stainless steel. I also got a couple of figurines for my house haha
I’ve walked past this building, I don’t know, several hundred times, most recently this afternoon. I’ve always seen it as Art Deco but haven’t known the breadth of how that style influenced the design, especially on the inside, which I’ve never seen. Thanks! Didn’t know the Met Life Building by its original name either-I’d love hear about that and the area around Grand Central.
That was so refreshing! I've been waiting my whole life (born in 1955) for the dreary, blocky Bauhaus/Brutalist/Minimalist fashion to end and something new and graceful to take its place. We shaped buildings beautifully before--surely we can do it again!
I’ve been in love with the Chrysler Building ever since a middle school trip to the UN introduced me to NYC. One day I want to see inside. I make sure to walk around it each time I’m in New York.
Toronto's Gooderham Building, which predates the similarly-shaped Flatiron Building in New York by a decade, is certainly one of the most iconic buildings in Canada. Its unique, charming style would make an excellent subject for a breakdown by AD.
Rosario Candela's 1920s, Manhattan co-ops, please. He is credited with defining the city's characteristic setbacks and bringing sophistication to apartment living. The Chrysler building would have to be up there as the most recognizable building in NYC.
Thank you! The Chrysler has always been my favorite building. I was fortunate to live on 34th Street for 25 years and had a spectacular view of it from my apartment. This was a wonderfully informative and interesting video, thank you!
I thank you for the opportunity to understand and see at close range the details of the world famous skyscraper. A professional description reveals exactly the project conceived by the architect.
The chryler building is in my opinion the grandest & beautiful building in new york, just wish they would make more buildings look more glorious as the chrysler building
I learned of the Chrysler Building in the video game Parasite Eve (based on the book) back in the mid-late 90s. In the game, it serves as the final area of the true ending of the story. You have to climb all 77 floors and every 10th floor houses a boss. The interior was nothing like the actual building of course, but every since learning of the building, the silhouette and it’s overall exterior design became something special to me. It would be about 5 years later I’d actually go to New York to find it and step in the entryway as it is of course off-limits to the public… and sadly I wasn’t able to find a good view of it from outside, but that’ll have to be for a future trip. I love this skyscraper and it’s become the standard-bearer of skyscraper design for me. I’ve yet to find another building that draws visual interest as much as this building does. It’s almost 100 years old now and every other building built these days just lacks making a statement outside of height and width. They might add interest to a cityscape from afar, but on their own and up close… it’s just another building full of squares that was designed with a ruler.
How crazy is it that its been an entire century and still there isn't a better looking building in nyc. The attention to detail back then is so insane, its impossible not to love
3 tripple explanation of the Fisher building, Penobscot, and the Guardian Building (also know as the cathedral of finance) in Detroit would be an amazing video for peak Artdeco. The Book Tower too if your feeling spicy!
Thank you for your wonderful presentation of the Chrysler Building. It has always been one of my favorite buildings in New York city. Ever since I was a kid, I would look up at skyscrapers and admire them from below.
It’s wonderful that NYC has careful protected this incredible building and ensured that no building blocks it from view - a great example of NY caring for its heritage.
One Vanderbilt has intruded on 42nd St, altering the skyline in a very strange way, unfortunately a gem like the Chrysler is being engulfed. Great video.
As a Detroit native and a fan of architecture and history I can say im glad this building wasn't built in Detroit. If it were theres a good chance it wouldve been remodeled, abandoned or straight up demolished like so many other iconic treasures we've lost in Detroit. Glad to see that its relatively untouched in NY.
UK here. Love these videos. So informative and interesting. The Chrysler's possibly my favourite building of all time. Glamorous, decorative, beautiful. Still the tallest brick-built building in the world? I'd love to see a similar summary of the NY bridges (maybe it's been done?)
Your videos are the best! I love hearing your architectural & historical insights. How about videos on the RCA Victor Building at Lex & 51st, the San Reno 145 CPW or the Apthorp? No matter what your next subject, we’ll be watching!
I visited the One Summit Observatory in January with my boyfriend and saw the Chrysler building lit up before the sky became dark up close. That crown was truly stunning to behold.
I don't know how many companies are still in existence who are producing original Art Deco artefacts in house from back in the 1920s to the present day, but one I do know of is Lyon & Healy (Chicago) who've been making their Salzedo Model concert harp since 1928 (designed by Witold Gordon) and is a real slice of the Art Deco movement which is still in production 95 years after its launch. They have made other models reflecting the tastes of different decades (the Victorian Style 23, the Art Nouveau Style 11, the very 1950s looking Style 30, etc.), but to me the Salzedo Model has the most impact of them all with its bold geometric angular design which at a distance (and out of focus) still has the outline of a classic concert harp.
The Chrysler always was and will always be my favorite NYC building. Other buildings that I'd like to see you talk about... The Met Life buildings on 23rd and 24th Street. You almost need to look at them as a pair. The tower had a distinctive exterior with huge Wyeth murals in the lunch room areas. And yet the newer building on 24th had an almost more impressive interior lobby. I'm so sad that they removed the connecting sky bridge between them. 😥
Thank you, Michael for the great images and excellent explanation. One of my favorite details of the Chrysler building is the brick basket weave design on the facade. I notice Van Allen’s many details every time I see it. But one small thing - this building was never built for Chrysler Motors, nor was it ever the HQ. Chrysler paid to build it, not Chrysler Motors. It was built to be a real estate project for his sons who weren’t interested in the automobile industry.
This was insanely cool to watch. Love love love Art Deco, and now it's completely obvious to me why the Chrysler building truly is my favorite building in New York.
Along with being a great example of Art Deco (A favorite style of mine), I am amazed at how fast this building was built and how great this building still is on a functional level. I had an interview there about a decade ago and it is still in great shape.
I love the Chrysler Building - and I love Art Deco. I live in Australia and will probably never see it, but I'd love to spend a week watching it with a camera. It is definately one of my favoutire buildings. To me the Empire State Building as a whole not nearly as pleasing - although the decoration of the Empire State Building especially around the entrance and lobby is gorgeous. When I was a kid I actually though the Chrysler Building was the Empire State Building - I was so dissapointed to find out that the fabled Empire State was relatively speaking so plain. I also love Michael making these videos - they are fascinating and to me a layperson they are educational. Please keep 'em coming.

More of this!
More beautiful historic buildings, less millionaire houses.
When did they remove the sky bridge?
We need more art deco sky scrapers!
Go see the Petronis Towers, they are amazing!
Love, love , love this! ❤ historical architecture is my passion! I don’t care what building is next… I want them all!
A masterpiece! No building compares to it. Art Deco perfection ! ⚡️
Michael Wyetzner is SO good at this. Thanks.
The Chrysler building is so iconic..it's favorite NYC building..nothing else compares
This was insanely cool to watch. Love love love Art Deco, and now it's completely obvious to me why the Chrysler building truly is my favorite building in New York.
I know nothing about architecture, but I can listen to him talk about it all day long
I am loving all the videos telling us the story of NYC buildings! Please, keep them coming! One on the Empire Building history would be great!
The amount of design, materials and detail that went in to these buildings are unmatched
Bazinga!
It's so beautiful. Beauty in architecture is extremely underrated.
this building I think just more than amazing! I like lot other buildings it has beautiful characters, personalities, lines. I could just stare at the crown and the whole building all day.
I'm an architecture student right now. Hope to some day be as iconic as Michael
