In the fast-paced world of Formula 1 racing, aesthetics matter just as much as speed and performance. Formula 1 fans have witnessed some unforgettable moments in the history of the sport, including the debut of some of the ugliest F1 cars ever designed. From the bizarre liveries that made us cringe to the worst F1 car designs that left us scratching our heads, Formula 1 has had its fair share of design blunders. But amidst the list of the most ugly F1 cars and bad F1 cars, there have been gems like the iconic Gulf Williams and the striking Ferrari Monza livery of 2023. Red Bull Racing, known for pushing the boundaries of F1 design, made waves with their Miami-inspired livery, proving that while some F1 designs may be questionable, others, like the triple crown livery by McLaren, can be true works of art. Stay tuned for the Formula 1 2023 season, where innovation meets style on the race track, making Formula One racing a feast for the eyes and the senses.

i don’t understand if it’s for competitiveness or not, but why are red bull’s liveries so plain boring. Look at mclaren! All red bull does is take a fan design and slap it on the sidepod
I reckon they want to keep the basic top half of the car the same whilst the bottom half would be free for artistic expression...which isn't hard considering there's nothing usually there.
Honestly RB's liveries aren't that bad, they're just fatigued, it haven't changed substantially since 2005, the current iteration dates from 2016
I wish they'd do more liveries like the Japan special from one or two years ago
Brand representation and recognition are important
Branding reasons
In Vegas the Ferrari looked really good with the white colours and the Red Bull looked like the RB9 from 2013.
But yes, Ferrari's Monza livery was something else. Just imagine if they had won that race.
Getting one of them on the podium at least was something.
@@LawVS As youve saidon past videos i hope it becomes the standard livery across all works/psudo works Ferrari efforts in all Motorsport. Its classy, ties the different disciplines together and makes it feel like peak 1960s Ferrari again.Plus the diagonal sash can be slapped on any car and look good.
Given that the AF corsa 296 GT3 also has it, im pretty confident thats the route Ferrari might go
The red and white vintage Ferrari livery was my favourite of the year. Absolutely glorious. The F123 game still has the Ferrari in that livery and the more I see it the more I love it.
Hopefully the devs don't change it!
I come here when I need a positive outlook on F1. So many creators are calling out the sport for its downfalls, which for the most part is warranted, but you bring a bit a levity and positive yet critical commentary that I need to stay grounded so thanks for that....cheers mate
Thanks! Going all in on the negativity all the time is a little excessive.
Im glad you brought up the AT colab with Bandai and Gundam. Many of the people in my circle who are really into Gundam and not F1 were also really hoping to see an F1 livery and not just the head of Gramps (RX78) and Aerial on the headrest
It was such a missed opportunity
I'd bet that the Gundam collab wasn't something pushed by AT themselves, but by Yuki alone. Hence the reason why they didn't do anything more of it.
@@LawVS Can't wait to see the results when AT eventually turn their car into a Gundam itasha
Hopefully we get one to promote udur hunt
My favorite liveries this year have been Mclaren Chrome and Abu Dhabi, and then the last 2 races of AT. Intense and out of the park !!
Triple Crown was soooooo good 👍. I want that to be the main one.
Nothing like a car looking like a cigarette
I don't know what it is but the recent McLaren liveries just seem off to me. Think something with the design and sponsor logos just doesn't work.
That one though... Damn it's so good.
My favorite was the Alpha Tauri in Vegas. The lines made the car look really fast. It also looked like neon lights reflecting on a dark car; very appropriate for Vegas.
It was definitely bonkers and out there.
I literally never thought about liveries until watching this video - your enthusiasm is infectious! Thanks for all your great videos this year and merry Christmas.
I'm stunned you didn't put Alpine's Mexico livery on the worst list; Blue, Pink and Bright Green all together!? There are Benetton liveries with better colour cohesion!
I think it was kept really minimal. If it had been bigger on the livery, it would have been on it.
Your livery videos are some of my favourites! Some of my favourites this year was the Ferrari Vegas and Monza liveries and the Mclaren Silverstone and Abu Dhabi
This would barely constitute a separate livery, but remember when each Ferrari driver had their own unique car number and race suit for their respective home races? The Charles Leclerc version in particular perfected this year's primary Ferrari livery just by changing the numbers.
I was also a fan of the McLaren triple crown livery from that same race, although no new McLaren livery can ever be perfect as long as the Google-colored wheel covers are retained. A unique set of wheel covers that matched the tricolored theme of the livery would've made the whole package so much more cohesive. The F1 version of the triple crown livery didn't remind me of the Marlboro cars that much, but I did get an 80s vibe from it. For some reason I was associating it more with the old M81 McLaren Mustangs that a lot of people probably haven't even heard of. Maybe it's because the M81s were mostly papaya orange and my great grandmother's early Fox body Mustang was white that I made that connection.
Yeah I liked that idea! It felt like it was a real nod to their drivers.
Most years, I see a Red Bull testing Livery and hope they will commit to one of those newer designs.
Edit: the Duracell Battery, and Google Rims are genius.
For me the Vegas and Monza Ferrari liveries are mostly on an equal level since the le mans victory for me personally doesn't really hold any more weight or esteem than the era the Vegas livery paid homage to, and I think purely visually they are equally good, the only thing that sets them apart is the race suits where I again agree they did a good job with both but seeing people compare the Monza suits to McDonald's workers made me unable to take it as seriously xD
They are very close in terms of looks but the Monza one edges it for me simply for the recent story behind it.
What makes the Valvoline livery even more baffling is, there WASN'T any additional sponsor money actually coming in from it. It was just done to coincide with Aramco's aquisition of Valvoline, which... I can't say that was the most fun news to find out about for me 😅
OH REALLY? I didn't realise that...so it was just their title sponsor's bragging op? Wow...
I never noticed the Whistlepig on Alfa!!!!!!!! Dang, guess I have to root for them now!!!! Thats some good stuff there!!!!
Glad you got something!
My hot take:
McLaren has to make the Triple Crown Livery their standard livery from now on. I really liked it too out off all of them and I mean why not own your history and historic colours all in one that works🙌🏽 (I mean they’ve gotten rid of that Gulf blue slowly of these past two seasons anyway🫣)
It does look very nice but it doesn't have a unique identity. Nice to have as a special though.
Great video keep it up you're doing amazing things also what would be your dream one off livery for any team? For me for Saudi GP I would have a one off livery of rich history of the middle east connection with English Islamic history if I was McLaren for example as one of the knights of the crusades becomes Muslim and marriage Salah Al Din niece and joined his army and his name was Robert of St. Albans.
The Alfa Romeo livery for Monza was just superb, I take it as a honorable mention at least lol
For worst liveries I'd give honorable mentions to the lack of commitment for the june pride month "special liveries"
Specialy Mercedes, whatever gradient they use on the badge has nothing to do with the pride flag lol
The tricolore liveries had always been nice.
That Vegas Ferrari one was Bellisimo!
Im a huge huge mclaren fan and seeing the chrome back on the car was amazing but in my opinion ferraris vegas livery clears all other liveries this year combined, the simplicity and retro look of that red and white made such a pretty car
Yeah the Chrome was good but I was keeping my bias in check.
Just loved the blue livery that Torro Rosso used to run, it was plain but a stunning colour, all Ferrari liveries are good because they are on a Ferrari
That silver, blue and red combo was so good.
the 2017-19 ones?
My 5 favourite one-off liveries this year.
Red Bull - Vegas
Ferrari - Vegas
McLaren - Abu Dhabi
Alfa Romeo - Kick
Williams - Union Jack
The McLaren Triple crown has had its own controversy as its own sneaky advertising for BAT by literally looking like a cigarette
You have the orange tip, the burnt bud, and the white middle... hmmm sneaky....
Really??? I did not see that.
Hey LawVS, you're from the UK right?
Have you followed B.T.C.C back in Super Touring days? Or at all?
Would be cool to hear if you have followed that series and you doing a few vids maybe on touring cars.
I used to follow it back in the 2000s and sometimes check it out on ITV4.
@@LawVS
Cool. Would consider doing a few vids on B.T.C.C? Your favorite cars, moments, seasons etc.
I hated the AlphaTauri livery for Las Vegas.... until I saw it on track. It really came alive there. But you're right. That Ferrari one was in a different league
Yeah, it has a place and it was on the track.
Towards the McLaren Triple Crown, I was at the Indy 500 and got to see them in person, and seeing the Marlboro chevrons on the track (even if they were in Papaya) was beautiful. Shame Felix crashed out there.
Very unfortunate. The 6 seemed to be the favourite.
"Very gamey very geeky but no"
2024 livery: Mr. LawVS your wish has been granted.
*Black and neon green livery for 2024*
We did get a gundam livery a bit on the Alpha Tauri - that gundam head.
That's not exactly something worthy of the collaboration.
Vegas Ferrari made such an impact they should consider keeping it that way.
It was a very nice livery.
I didn't even noticed that at some point McLaren had their car in white and a kinda orange color(because i became a fan of f1 this year but i didn't cared about the colors until the Vegas gp) and i prefer that version more than their current one
I don't blame you since that was back at the start of the year when McLaren weren't doing all that great.
I fully agree that a gundam motif on the Alpha would have been stellar, the Red Yellow Blue on White would have been perfect.
Could've been cool but too niche probably
Really liked the McLaren stealth livery
Yeah it was OK. Not exactly groundbreaking but passable.
Idk why there's not a ton of pictures, but the alfa romeo vegas livery was amazing imo
Yeah it was pretty neat.
I would definitely my top 5 are
5.Alfa romeo italy livery
4.Williams Gulf livery
3.Mclaren chrome livery
2.Alphatauri las vegas livery
1.Ferrari las vegas livery
And my top 5 worst are
5.red bull miami Livery
4.Alpine las vegas
3.Aston Martin british Livery
2.alfa romeo twitch green livery
1. mercedes they had no one off liverys at all
I think 🤔
Thanks for sharing!
The vegas alpha tauri was INCREDIBLE
Looked amazing on track too
It really was. Super trippy. I want these liveries to make an impression. Otherwise how are they special?
I feel like McLaren only did the stealth mode livery to avoid clashing with Williams during the three weekends that they were wearing the Gulf livery
Oh so like how sometimes the Vegas Alfa livery looked close to the Mercedes one?
@@LawVS I completely forgot about the Alfa livery but yeah pretty much
Great video. Love your content. But if you’re gonna be showing pictures of livery’s, please don’t photoshop the photos and make them more faded. Makes no sense. I’m trying to see the colors that you’re talking about properly.
God I’m so glad more people love the one off Ferrari livery’s from vegas and monza. May sound weird to compare this but the Monza yellow portions really remind me of the old sp333 momo liveries which is one of my favourite pieces of machinery of all time. That damn V12 man. 🤌
Yeah, they both look good.
My top 3 best
1. Vages Ferrari
2. McLaren triple crown
3. Chrome McLaren
Alpha Tauri should’ve done a gundam livery inspired by the fast and furious Supra.. minus the orange
It's a shame they chose a designer over freakin' GUNDAM
Best:
McLaren Triple Crown
McLaren Chrome (honestly, I think Chrome and Papaya could work well together as a main livery)
Ferrari Las Vegas
Ferrari Monza (should be their main livery if it's not red and white)
Alpha Tauri Las Vegas/Abu Dhabi
Honourable mentions:
Red Bull Las Vegas
Williams Gulf
Williams Silverstone/COTA
Worst:
Williams Las Vegas
Sauber Spa/Zandvoort
Aston Martin Silverstone
McLaren Stealth/Las Vegas
Red Bull Miami
there is weird rumor regarding Sauber and 2024-2025, which is that of a Sauber BENTLEY F1 Team @LawVS
REALLY? That kinda makes sense Bentley is a VW Group brand...like Audi.
@@LawVS despite Sauber using Ferrari engines till 2026, I guess they just want to promote Bentley, the main focus will be Audi anyway.
I actually like the carbon/black CEVA "splodge" on the Ferrari.
Fair enough. :)
The triple crown livery was cool but I can’t get over how in the days of banned tobacco advertising, that they managed to design a car that looks just like a lit cigarette
I hadn't realised that...I guess the smoke and mirrors were about nostalgia that it slipped me by.
Content is running thin until season starts😐
Well yes of course it is. But I still wish to provide some kind of musings for people who want content during this dry period. It's also a good time to experiment with the channel.
Have to be honest, the McLaren Vuse livery for Abu Dhabi this season looked fine in the render, but looked pretty awful on track
Hope they scale back for ‘24
Yeah it wasn't particularly good in practice but it was fine.
5:54 Forget the car. Alpha Tauri could have just entered the Gundam
Just grab the RB19 and put on top of a hotel so Charles could win.
I personally loved the Williams Las Vegas livery.
That's fair enough. Shame it didn't have more room to breathe.
in my opinion the Alfa Romeo Vegas and Abu Dhabi livery the best livery of this year, in my opinion
It was cute and a nice nod to their first collaborative livery
Didnt Jaguar have a Green Livery? The one with HSBC on the rear wing?
They did but it was a dark green.
@@LawVS still looked good tho
I haven’t even watched the video yet, but if the Williams Silverstone livery isn’t in the top 5 best liveries, I’m fighting everybody here. 😂
Eh… got a mention. I’ll fight half of ya… line em up, put up yer dukes! 😅
Well I appreciate you sticking out the video.
One off race suits, helmets and liveries are a stupid waste of money. In a cost cap era too and nobody else is saying this.
I guess it's something sponsors or teams budget specifically for.
unpopular opinion i know but i actually really liked the Williams Las Vegas livery. I thought it just kind of fit the Vegas theme well
I get what you're saying. The idea is neat but I feel like it needed room to breathe. Here, it looks incredibly dense.
wonder what kind of livery the actual American team, Andretti might give us......... As for Alfa Romeo using the Vegas livery in Abu Dhabi, they celebrated 6 years of co operation with Sauber, hence they did not change it, hence number 6 on the playing cards
I think it'll be similar to their Indycar efforts. That or the red and white of their Formula E car.
@@LawVS I think white with some other colors for CADILLAC...........and of course USA flag somewhere. Do you think Andretti will get in?
As a Williams fan I didn’t like Silverstone, bit too flag shaggy for me.
It was OK, but could've been cleaner.
To be honest, This year's Ferrari special Monza livery has been alot better than last year's Ferrari Monza livery.
Yeah. The 2022 version was so off balance.
Sorry but do not agreed with your high esteem on the Monza ones.
Alfa Romeo was a beatiful job on the nose, heavily reminescent of the green works under Benetton sponsorhips, and a flag placement on the engine cover, wich ruined it all. Was I be able to draw I'd have placed a reimagining somewhere, but I'm not able to draw, nor to make lines work nor to accost colors succesfully, so I'll have to leave the task to someone else.
While the Ferrari is straight out lazy job only done for 1/4, since that stripe should have been continuous from one side to the other, and reversed to have the 2nd thin stripe facing bacwards, a very old tick used to draw movement in comics. Also, given it's location on the 499p, I'd have made the airbox total yellow and the stripe would have been placed in front of the cockpit covering also the side air intakes, *THAT* would have been an approriate nod to the victory in LeMans.
(On a side note, Fer's racing suits in Monza were so well made they were disconnected from the car itself, they're the 'just paint the car red' racing team and those required a balance between red, yellow and black that many Tifosi offendedly claimed that it was an hommage to Germany(Italy has a complex against Germany because they've always beaten us in the long game, and in automotive I do think they've not been humiliated even close to enough, and I think that as *Italian* ), also the one in Las Vegas could have used some blue because of NART).
For the rest, I've laready said elsewhere why I preferred the Heritage but voted for Bolder than Bold(I was the one talking about 'speedblocks' on your dedicated video), am one of the(supposed by you) few who remembers about the Triple Crown, first because I don't like this trend of bare carbon(started by McLaren) and that livery was in one piece, and second because those should(well, almost, for many kiwis I might be a blasphemous ranther than a fan) be the colors McLaren races with, even though I don't like the Marlboro chevron form this special and last year'Sauber are favorites of mine among this groud effect rulebook.(You might also find interesting this 'harlequin' pre-series variant: www.mclaren.com/racing/heritage/how-we-created-our-triple-crown-liveries/ )
That's fair enough. Thanks for sharing your contributions and the tipoff.
Redbull’s special liveries have been pretty disappointing lately compared to what they used to have with the absolutely gorgeous turkey gp livery or their 2018 and 2019 special liveries
The Vegas one was cute. It felt very subtle.
White mclaren looks like a web browser.
Makes sense with the sponsor.
can you please replace the entire sky f1 team, thank you.
That's kind of you to say but they're doing their job. Nobody could replace Bernie Collins though.
McDonalds livery for the win! 💪
I liked Ferrari's Vegas livery better than the Monza one
Fair enough. They're both good
18:55 ..me..
aww don't be down on yourself.
At least I know thay we have totally different taste.
Which is OK! You do you.
3:41 well we have that now.....and it is not it lol
ferrari vegas was my favorite
It was very smart.
To many 'special/one off livery' this year
McLaren were quite prolific...but I reckon that was down to it being their 60th anniversary.
The most beautiful car was Fernando Alonso cars with Flavio Briatori blue and yellow
Look at the 2007 Renault test livery. Gorgeous.
I don't pay attention to liveries. I really don't pay attention to special liveries. They are only a ploy to sell more diecasts. Nascar got to the point the standard paint became the rare one and a new paint job was every race. A diecast was introduced for every paintjob, 20 or more in a season. At $30 for a diecast, its a racket.
Fair enough, worth a discussion.
Best ones were Miama&Vegas
Vegas was quite smart.
Who cares about liveries? Cars should be reconisable on track and that is the only ting that is worth considering. Red Bull does a good job by not deviating too much from their standard livery.
I understand but sometimes the special designs are fun for some occasions.
@@LawVS
A Ferrari is always red and that is seen as beautifull. Red Bull has only for 19 years have had their livery and that is seen as boring. The Monza livery of Ferrari displayed a Belgian flag and i have no clue why (vertical black-red-yellow).
Some of the livery’s I didn’t realise till after the race cus of how boring they were
Ouch.
Looking forward to the 2024 version of this video. Kick Sauber Where it Hurts or whatever they're called has got to be the ugliest car of modern times IMHO. I hate lime green!
It's not a one-off car though
McLaren one off for me? Chrome livery. TC looks like burnt cigarette. AD livery always looks bizarre because BAT has such demand.
Do they have demand in changing liveries up?
@@LawVS possibly. Depends on what product sells better where. They did so with BAR in 2000-2005
Personally I think the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes livery is the best McLaren livery. Running it in Gran Turismo 7. I was recreating it myself and then found out I could just download one someone else had made. So, yeah, using that livery on the Super Formula car in the game
He's talking about present time. There was no Vodaphone McLaren in 2023.
@@realretro_x5412 It's the best one I've seen them use (not limited to 2023)
Ferrari have to milk nostalgia, it's been a while since they've had much to celebrate..
The Monza one was modern at least.
@@LawVS it's a cool livery for sure, just... feels like they're always looking backwards

The Italian GP was good though and the Vegas one was touching...but the others were so low effort.

HOT TAKE: I despise the regular Alfa Romeo livery. It just looks so bland and boring.
Sums up their season.
Very true
Chrome was the best.
It was very nice but had to keep it to one McLaren
