The chrome backlash was probably due to the pictures (not renders) released, they were made in a cloudy weather and under a roof. For me that also looked bad, but then I saw the renders, and am trying to give it a chance.
That's a fair point...they could've used their foyer but...didn't.

I can’t lie I actually love the MP4 livery. It might have to do with the actual shape of the car but I just thought it looked so sick. Now looking back at the Alfa testing livery wow that thing is hideous.
I think the MP4-29 gripe I have is when you compare it to the MP4-28 and the W05 of 2014. The McLaren, by comparison, looks bland.
Man I loved that castrol livery but maybe just because those shades of green and blue are some of my favourite colours xD
Same with you on the 1000,and as for the new chromeclaren my problem with it is just that theres not enough chrome,it just feels half baked,just switched the teal and black to chrome.
It was just a precursor to the A522 and its change.
Im guessing the backlash on McLarens chrome livery is because its not enough chrome since they need to save weight. Or the lighting i guess. I personally really like the papaya and the chrome mixed. I think it has potential to be a permanent livery for McLaren if google stays

I dotn like it because it looks like a 6 year old has wrapped it in tinfoil. I actually really like the contrast between the chrome and orange, but its the way its put on. Theres just a fully orange rear wing floating around,and a random sliver of orange on top of the airbox, and the chrome of the wing seems a differrent shade.
Its just really scruffy looking
More chrome and less papaya should improve it.

Just rememberd that Red Bull did made alot of livery in the early 2010s. It felt like they showed up with a different car in each race.

Not sure if anyone has already suggested this, but in the future when covering content that's especially visual, maybe don't have the simulated lighting change on images. On old monitors or TVs it can make difficult to discern colors.
I appreciate it, but I use that to ensure it's different enough from the original photo, but I'll look to doing less intrusive measures next time

I just think it needed more chrome I think that if they had less black and more chrome it would look a lot better. I was hoping they would do something like use the 2008 livery but replace it with orange. But sadly that can't happen weight saving really can make or break livers.
I think with this era of weight saving it's less possible than it would've been just two years ago.

I know this isn't a one-off livery simply because it raced for 3 full years
But Toro Rosso's 2006-2008 artistic pinkish-red bull taking over 60% of the car and standing out from the metallic dark blue base color and the yellow nose cone and circle being replaced with gold was *AMAZING* and one of, if not, the most underrated F1 livery in history in my opinion

Constructive feedback, it’s hard to get a feel for just how ugly the livery is when the brightness and hue of the image is constantly shifting
It's to do with the style of my videos so it's not just a static image.
@@LawVS I get that, but when you're talking about liveries and colours specifically, the drastic and quick hue shifting was very distracting from the video. I couldn't tell whether some of the colours were originally on the car, or if it was just due to the gradient. Maybe a less fast-moving and contrasting gradient next time? I really liked the idea of the video, but the gradient over the images just wasn't helping.

Mastercard Lola really pulled it off. Like many who are behind on credit card repayments, that car was just as behind. That livery really gave a me 90's shopping mall colour scheme.
If only they were allowed to start in 1998 they might have stood a chance and Sospiri might have had an F1 career.

That Jaguar Oceans 12 livery looks like someone traveled to Mexico, saw a Ferromex locomotive and thought "yeah, lets use those colors for the Oceans 12 scheme" and proceeded to fail miserably when they painted the car! Also I have no idea why they thought sticking a $300,000 diamond on the nose of the car was a good idea! The '07 Red Bull car was a cool idea, but looking at the stills, it looks more like they dipped the car in glitter instead of plastering photos on it. And the 2022 Alfa Romeo.....just wow, WOW, my eyes were hurting just looking at the car!
Yeah the Jaguar was just sad. Could've been a nifty integration but was just some red.

McLaren's Singapore 2022 livery was easily my least favourite in recent years. Cluttered, garish and over-designed, with splotches of dull, bare carbon everywhere. Absolute eyesore. As for the "light Marlboro" livery that Rosberg drive: when I first saw a photograph of it, I thought the photo had been washed out sun exposure or something. When I saw the yellow and white car next to Prost's, I thought it was unusual, but came to quite like it.

I'll be honest, I thought McLaren could've done more with the chrome than just replace some of the black and blue with it. Chrome and Papaya is an interesting combination, and combining the historic papaya with the more recent association that the chrome has I think is a nice idea. I just think it could've been done better perhaps.
Actually, McLaren's first car was painted white, as it was one of the cars used to film the film 'Grand Prix' during the 1966 season. It was originally meant to be green and silver but Bruce McLaren was short of money, so he struck a deal with the makers of 'Grand Prix' for the car to be painted white with a green stripe to represent a fictional Japanese team in the film.
Papaya was introduced in 1967 on McLaren's Can-Am cars (Bruce wanted to make the cars stand out) and had made its way onto their F1 cars by 1968. It was with this livery that Bruce McLaren won the team's first F1 race by winning in Belgium. Papaya then stayed on until 1973 (by then there was only a little of it on the car as McLaren had gone corporate with sponsorship from cosmetics maker Yardley resulting in a mostly white livery), then for 1974 it was replaced by the classic red and white of Marlboro (though they ran a third car still sponsored by Yardley).
Then it was all sponsor dictated arguably: Malboro until 1996, the Silver and black used for both West and the fact that Mercedes had taken a major stake in the team, and arguably that Mercedes aspect stayed with the chrome liveries from 2006-'14, even though they'd sold their stake in McLaren in 2009. Papaya is purely McLaren though, anyone who says otherwise hasn't done their research.
Sadly the weight issue is still a thing so they had to bow to that unfortunately. As for the colour, it was referring to their first F1 car in 1968 but I forgot the pre-68 stuff.
@@LawVS McLaren started in F1 in 1966 with that aforementioned white car, and I believe their car was red in 1967. Then Papaya in 1968.
To be fair, I don't know what colour Bruce painted his cars for the Tasman Series before taking his team to F1. Maybe he just kept them green seeing as they were just Coopers with larger engines.
@@dominicbarden4436if it's true that Bruce saw the Papaya on another driver's car, it wasn't really his original color. That would be found under Ron Dennis with the Volcano Orange when they started making supercars regularly, the P1 wore it excellently.
Another thing to be tied to Dennis is the first color the Speedmark sported, the same Rocket Red used for the Marlboros that later was kept in both West and Vodafone on the nosecone's tip and the "red wings" upon the sidepods. I'd suggest an article that pops up with "convoluted origins of the Speedmark" as keywords, it explains many things, including my next point.
The real reason they're going full Papaya is to counter Ron's legacy. He isn't a saint, I hold personally against him for having denied the McLambo when it was doable, but I did like some of the things that came under him(West livery, P1, Volcano Orange). This is going far enough that the Volcano has been either renamed Ember or replaced althoghether in the road cars' color palette.
I don't draw for McLaren, I actually don't draw at all, but they should get rid of the blue/azure since Gulf wherever Gulf will be it won't be on a McLaren, and because unlike Bridgestone Goodyear has not shown interest in re-entering F1. They should use orange as central color(their weight gimmick is not paying) and use one accent ranging from (Volcano)yellow to (Rocket)red, even magenta may work, and another accent in a range from black to white, grays included. For the actual graphic, am not a fan of the Vodafone even though it's still the most extensive Speedmark's deployment to this day, while my personal fav has been happily labeled as "Arrows" and "cheap toy".
Speaking of wich, the literal Arrows McLaren SP is a regular contender and a fan favorite, the change of air literally did wonders.

I didn't say that Bruce saw the papaya on another driver's car. He might've done, who knows, equally he might've chosen it on his own volition.
Ron Dennis has done so much for McLaren over the years, but for me his second spell in charge from 2014-'16 soured my opinion of him a fair bit. Zak Brown's not been perfect, but he should get credit for helping institute the culture change at the team in 2019 that was sorely needed after 2017 and 2018.
I'm not a fan of the Gulf blue the team have right now, honestly they should have the blue that they had from 2018-'21. I did like the shade of orange used in 2017 though, whatever shade that was (I think it was called Tarocco). Your idea for the graphic is interesting, though I'm not sure about the magenta. Personally I'd rather have orange and blue. It would be nice if they did a livery incorporating each era, if you like, though I don't know if that's possible. Papaya, perhaps the volcano orange, blue, silver/chrome, black, red, maybe a little white, I imagine there are plenty of colour clashes.
Papaya is associated with most of McLaren's early successes in the 60s and 70s to be fair. Their first several F1 wins, their Can-Am domination and their IndyCar success with 2 Indy 500s and plenty of wins at other races. It's not necessarily associated with their F1 zenith.

It had a good base with that colour, but it could've been better without that logo on the airbox and some classic logos.

Especially since nowadays you can't fully see the helmets during the race and mostly get coverage on it before the race.
The Google Chrome wheels and logo mean that the MCL-60 will be hideous in any colour.

Im not sure if it's because of copyright fear but when theres a bunch of color changes on photos it kinda makes it difficult to actually tell how bad the liveries were because we're not seeing the actual color

I wonder how many people who claim that Chrome is a McLaren livery have seen the Vodafone liveries in other categories, namely V8 Supercars. Every last one of them are Chrome with a shade of red or bright neon orange which based on that I can only imagine that those are Vodafone colors not McLaren. Still, if one really goes through the 60s-70s McLaren's Papaya, Blue, and bare metal are about the most common colors on all the cars.
All the more reason why orange can work with chrome.
The diamond was definitely one of the stupidest decisions ever in F1

The McGuire would've been fine if the red and yellow stripes wrapped all the way around and met back up on the nose without extending to that tacked-on front wing.
The Oceans Twelve livery is clunky, but the fact that it still has those Jaguar colors salvages it somewhat. It still looks good from the side on.
I'd agree that the preseason livery for the MP4-29 was a bit uninspired. The chrome and black they eventually went with wasn't exactly stunning, but I did like the way the white outline of the McLaren logo looked on top of the black sidepods.
My only gripe with the MasterCard Lola is that the Pennzoil logo is too small and gets lost in the sidepods. The colors fit right in with 90s F1.
The RB3 didn't look good, but it's also one of those liveries that wasn't meant to be judged on aesthetics because that was set aside completely, kind of like the Ferraris post 9/11.
The Alpine livery w/ green looked half-baked, and I didn't even know what the significance of it was supposed to be at the time.
I don't have anything bad to say about the others on this list.

I feel like the okx livery that mclaren used in the singapore gp was a lot better than the chrome livery that they are going to use. Plus it would have been a great livery for the miami gp because it had a synth vibe to it.
It was certainly quite busy that one and it fitted that leg of the season.
I can see being disappointed since the old car was so much chrome. But weight saving is a thing these days.
It is better than their standard 2023 livery though.
It's definitely better than the regular livery and I wish they would keep this version for the rest of the season, but we probably might see one more special livery this year, around Singapore maybe as a tribute to either the Yardley McLaren or the West McLaren - with the names Lando and Oscar on the side!

I personally really like the chrome, because it brings back fun memories of the past and goes well with the papaya. Its also a nice pun with the chrome logo on it.

For me at least, the new Chrome Mclaren has 2 factors that hold it back.
1. The original Vodafone chrome livery was so good
2. The current season standard livery is by and far my least favorite on the grid.
Those 2 factors combine for a livery that could have been cool that was just kind of let down by both nostalgia for the past, and a bad base template.
At least this chrome has removed the light blue, it just doesn't work in my eyes.
Honestly the Ferrari livery was nice, it wasn't the best of course, and could have definitely been better, but to put it as " one of the worst" is way too harsh imo.
It was just a missed opportunity to go full vintage.

Hear me out. It was half-baked. The colour is luscious and the number font is good...but the 1000 text is garish and the lack of classic integration with the sponsors was disappointing.

Love the livery videos! Not many F1 channels talk about liveries as much as you! Definitely loved the yellow Marlboro Mclaren when I was a kid though, definitely agree with the 1000 Ferrari livery.

Mclaren’s livery from this year with the orange/black/blue is pretty awful… which makes the special liveries a bit annoying because they’re much nicer than the real one.
It's just not sitting well but at least the chrome one-off is nice

Another bad one-off/testing liveries which I would add:
Honda 2006 Chinese GP - 555 logo is too big, it's done worse than the 2005 BAR livery at Chinese GP, which is ok and I dont hate it.
Alfa Romeo 2022 Azerbaijan GP - No, that green doesnt work.
Red Bull 2023 USA GP - We don't know yet which of the 2 will Red Bull use, but in my opinion both options are terrible.
BAR 2004 Chinese GP practice livery for Davidson - It would be great to have 555 blue-yellow livery, but not this one, what is that massive 555 logo and yellow on the front?
I would also mention Williams Visionary livery, which didnt make it and remains just as livery proposal. And that's how it should be because it's garbage.
I actually like the 2022 Alfa Baku livery, whoever they got for their paint for the red and green needs a raise.

Ferrari's 2001 Monza livery imo was my favorite. The grey nose made it stood out nicely.
That was very apt given the circumstances.
I don't know if it's ugly, but for sure is the most boring and uninspired one off livery of all times: the 2022 Belgian GP Mercedes for the 55 years of AMG. I remember that there was a static version of the car in red with the big black number inside a white circle, which was pretty cool because it was a hommage to the fabulous Mercedes 300 SEL, but instead they opted for the laziest livery ever made, just placing the white sticker with the number and keeping the livery as the original 😑😑
OH I completely forgot about that one. Yeah that was super lazy.
It's the marketing teams fault cuz they hyped it up like their bringing back the Vodafone Chrome but gave us something entirely different.

I think my problem is they still have too much black on the car. All black should be chrome and if they can't do it. Save it until you can spare the 0.5kg that it ads. It looks more like a 2015/2016 force India tribute than 2006-2013 McLaren tribute.
I think this is just a symptom of modern F1 cars until they solve the weight limit

Mclaren kept the chrome in 2015 for few races. It was terrible
SF1000 was a bad take and I cannot agree, the overall livery was just weak with how barren it looked, the 1000GP banner helped with occupying a blank space on the airbox which would usually be occupied by the Mission Winnow logo which just annoyed me throughout the season at least Ferrari rectified it back in 2019 with the 90 years one.
Glad to see I’m not the only one that thinks of the Castrol Alpine livery that way.
One worst one I can think of is one that wasn’t raced in it’s revealed form, the Red Pig for the W13, which they scrapped due to bunk superstio-I mean, weight restrictions. It looked horrible with that red front end. It’s a good thing they didn’t run it in the end.
Honestly RB and Mclaren have been the weakest one-offs this year. I’m hoping Williams and Gulf knock it out of the park

I feel like this is an unpopular opinion but my favourite livery of all time is the McLaren 2015 livery with the chrome and orange colour scheme I feel like no-one else agrees with me but it compliments the cars shape very nicely and is a good way to cover up a lack of sponsors.
So the MP4-30? Hmm...it's OK, but needed a sponsor and a different number font because that was atrocious.

the silver force India of 2017... it just looks like someone stuck some cardboard on top of the engine cover ans sprayed it silver 😅 also the red and silver mercedes they did last year to celebrate some touring car anniversary? I don't remember if they raced it but the show car looks awful! Also... I agree with you on the 2020 ferrari... how can a team as italian as ferrari make such a collosal f**k up with their 1000 gp livery? ah yes... because they are ferrari...
They just needed to at least remove the 1000 on the airbox.

See the media & most people agree with me on the "chrome" livery,also they are right that Zak needs to go,the direction McLaren went with him is poor.Atm they are the strangest team cause i dont understand what they want long term besides social media hype.
They're adapting to younger audience as are the likes of Alpine, Alfa Romeo and even Red Bull. It's just a sign of the times.

Glad im not the only one who didnt like the Mugello 2020 Ferrari livery, while i understand why they choose that color, it could have been made a lot better with older logos or something else i dunno, plus the color reminds me of red beets, and i HATE red beets XD
If they went the whole hog with classic sponsor logos and no "1000" on the airbox, it could've been lush.

I was reading a reddit post and F1 fans seem to hate Drive to Survive. What are your views? (I got into F1 with DTS)
DTS has a place in the world of Formula 1 for sure. I watch when it comes on but I take it with a pinch of salt, but it's been vital to F1's survival for younger fans and adapting to modern tastes and consumption of media. However, they need to stick more to the truth and not embellish as much as they did in Season 4. Season 5 was better but it could be better. But overall, yeah it's alright.
MP4-29 test livery is clean and simple.. i actually liked it. I never liked the force india cars.. they never looked quiet right to me.
In isolation, it looks OK; but when you compare it to what it was the year before, it looks very bare.

The Marlboro Lights car should have been gold not yellow.

Personally,i loved the F1000 but the only thing i dont like Is the numbers of the drivers,the shape 2021-like,instead i didnt like the White Red bull of 2021,It Just looks like a can of Winter Edition but i loved the suits
I think if the SF1000 had that number on the airbox removed and had classic logos for the sponsors, it would have been great...just a half-baked design.

ngl the mclaren chrome livery didn't really hit the spot for. the chrome just doesn't go as well with the papaya as it did with the red

They count as one-offs. Also thanks to BAR, One-off liveries were tightened due to their defiance with their 1999 designs.

I have never been a fan of the old chrome livery so I was delighted they kept the papaya on it!

Unpopular opinion: I like every single livery McLaren has released since 2018. Papaya liveries may not be slayers, but they're pretty decent anyway. I totally agree with the SF1000 livery, that yellow 1000 and the other sponsors look like vomit. I didn't remamber how bad were that Jaguar and Red Bull liveries. I would also add the Coulthard's last race one that was really confusing and his race ended in the first lap. Another ones I hated due to the lack of effort were the black Renaults from 2016 and 2020, and of course, the BWT pink Alpine from 2022.
It's good to see them at least use their original colour.
I disagree with most of this, coz I believe race cars should be colourful like INDYCAR and NASCAR. 1
