Those theater scenes could be very important to its Oscar chances, as we know how much the Academy loves rewarding movies that illustrate how important and transformative movies are.
As someone from Belfast this is so exciting for me! I was born after the troubles but we r taught about it in school because there is still some problems and it is just amazing that the rest the world can learn about it too!!!!!
This one looks really good, I’m a little hesitant to prioritize this since I’m not really a fan of Branagh. However this does seem very different than his other movies
Caitriona Balfe has been my favourite actress ever since I first watched Outlander many years ago and I'm so excited she's finally getting the recognition she deserves!!! I'm so excited to finally watch this movie but sadly have to wait until February here in the Netherlands
Saw it Sunday, loved it! The movie gave me total Jojo Rabbit vibes and was just utterly charming. I agree with you that Caitriona Balfe was the standout performance in this film. I thought her performance in Ford v Ferrari was totally underrated, so I'm glad she got a bigger role where she can get the critical praise she deserves. Also, after garbage like Cats and Artemis Fowl, it's good to see Judi Dench in something that doesn't suck!
Genuinely surprises me how little people outside the UK and Ireland know about the Troubles. To be fair it isn’t something taught in English schools now even but everyone just grows up knowing it.
I saw Belfast for the third time today and I appreciated it more than the first 2 times I saw the film. I like that it was in black and white. II looks period and retro. Not of this time. Time of long ago or looking back, remembering the past. Taking the audience back to a family time in 1969. Jude Hill had a breakout performance in his first film. I wish he had an Oscar nomination. I like that it concentrated on family rather than violence and war. I really felt for this multi-generational family. The ending was not climatic but very quiet and subtle. As you regret having to leave and unsure of the future and not sure it is the right thing to do; you quietly leave hoping you can return as though you can pick up where you left off.
The movie just has a magical feeling to it. I’m not a fan of the opening and ending of it with the present day Belfast, it felt a little cold. I loved everything else. It didn’t feel slow at all to me. The casting was perfect too.
Would you believe here in Northern Ireland, we need to wait until 22nd Jan to see this. I live about 40 miles away from Belfast and am really looking forward to seeing a movie about our home that isn’t depressing and violent.
Saw this a few days ago and thought it was good but nothing special. I also find the B&W annoying and pointless - really hinders what looked like they would've been some very visually beautiful scenes. I don't think it deserves Best Picture, but the Academy does like movies like this. It's kind of like a mix of Roma and Nomadland.
Heads up! Remember whenever you see Irish names and there’s a C it’s always pronounce is a K. There is no K in the Irish language. So Caitríon is pronounced Katrina. Heads up! I loved this movie. It was sad and emotional but also oddly hilarious. I loved the kid and the grandpa so much. Idk it was great loved it. Great review 💪💪💪
Very intense movie all the way through. Although the violence is only shown for a short time in the beginning and will make a reprise at the end, the threat of it is always there. This makes the time this 9 year old spends with his grandfather or playing in the street, just trying to be a kid all the more important. The gangster/militia hooligans are off somewhere out of sight, but their evil hangs over this child world through the whole film.
Loved your review your a serious critic / film buff your very passionate about the movie industry well done . I just like the cinema experience watching marvellous films . Lots of love from Derry Ireland 🇮🇪🇺🇲
I didn't find it slow but I do feel that the ending could have given us a high or a low, but it just ends. This movie is made by the actors, everyone is great especially the kid and the mother.
If that's the case then how come Roma didn't win Best Picture. Or how come Citizen Kane which is regarded as the greatest movie fo all time didn't win Best Picture? for 93 years of the Academy Awards, only 3 B&W movie have won Best Picture dude
Instead of this movie sucking you into a flowing story, you just see a bunch of scenes happening chronologically that don't FEEL like a flowing story, despite being one. Big no-no for a movie.
Good comments, here. I found the characters uninteresting, and I didn’t empathize with them. I agree: something felt “off” through the entirety of the movie, and it might have been the overly swift and rather superficial manner in which the plot’s events were dealt with. It was ok, nothing more.
omg this movie os soo overated.Cannot believe that people are making such a fuss about it.Really for those who know little to nothing about northern Ireland then there are other movies which I think show much better the grittier harsh reality of growing up in Northern Ireland like In the Name of the Father and a few others. Really I think this deals with the subject matter of what was going on in Northern Ireland ina very saccharine and sanitised way.Everything is far too neat and nice and cosy...even though I know there are the scenes of the street war and the crashing and mobbing of the supermarket. Honestly...this is just a nice little movie and nothing more..its not oscar worthy at all.
I have only walked out of two movies. This one and a Jackie Chan movie where he has a magic tuxedo that makes Jackie Chan super good at kung fu whenever he wears the magic tuxedo. I would still rate the tuxedo ten times higher than this crap.
“The tragedy of Macbeth” will win the oscar this year .The movie is too good specially the Cinematography. The Cinematography of “The tragedy of Macbeth” is just masterful✨🤍
Thanks for watching!
So, we are almost to the end of the year... What is your CURRENT Best Picture prediction??
Belfast, maybe nightmare alley, but if I could break all the rules I would have nine days win
Congrats on 100k!

@@jackhindle9062 nine days was sooo good!

Talk about a complete 180° turn for Kenneth Branagh: going from Artemis Fowl to this.
For sure!

I`m Irish so I definitely gotta check this out, there`s really feck all Irish movies made these days, great review man
This one looks really good, I’m a little hesitant to prioritize this since I’m not really a fan of Branagh. However this does seem very different than his other movies
I’m not really a Branaugh fan either and this is one of my favorite movies of the year so far

Yes, there’s a grace about her which is quite lovely, probably helps that she was once a willowy fashion model.

Unfortunately, this film isn't releasing near me yet 😥 Can't Wait!

Funny because I’m from Northern Ireland then I just see the Belfast notification come up on my phone

Can’t wait to see this as a northern Irishman
From Southern Ireland, but I’m so excited for this movie! It’s such an essential part of our history
I am also Northern Irish and super excited for this movie. Funny thing is Belfast doesn't play in Belfast until late February.
I'm from good ole Bangor. NI gang
I was a fan of this film I think as of now it will win Best Picture and I wouldn't be upset at that
Thank you for the review Austin! Can't wait to check it out 😄

how can any movie about a shit hole like Belfast not being depressing and violent? How may deaths were there in the civil war?
Nothing to see here....

Kenneth is a great actor and director
I related to the movie more than I thought I would if give it about an 85 percent.
id love to keep it on in the big screen while working, but zero engagement.
I wish more reviews that acknowledged the family was trying not to become part of the aggressive neighborhood gang.
Looking forward to this one as an Irish person, not Belfast though. Also for future reference, Caitríona is pronounced KUH-TREE-NA
I would say KA-TREE-NA 🤣we must be from different parts of Ireland
I’m a simple man, I say it how I see it 😂
Just by hearing the plot I think it might have taken a lot of inspiration from "400 Blows"
It was a heart warming movie. It wasn’t my favorite of the year but I liked it a lot.
If your a Raquel Welch fan, there's a scene in "Belfast" that you're going to like.
I think this movie have great screenplay and black and white is very good for this movie like onother great movie black and white Passing for me 9/10
no review for passing?
You said a movie who uses other movies as an escape from reality? Definitely an Oscar contender haha
It's in black and white of course it's going to be the best picture winner lol.
A B & W movie hasn't won in 10 years and only 3 have been nominated

I would love to see this film but no theatre within 50 miles of me is playing it… Thanks to shitty Marvel movies taking up all the screens☹️
For real! I live in Kentucky and it ain’t playing here
At least you got chance to see it 2 months before People who live in Belfast got to see it :D

Why did you walk out and how far into the movie was that? Just curious as this was one of my favorite movie.
Talking about Belfast of course not the Jackie Chan movie lol
I don’t think dune has a shot at best picture.
Same. Very good shot at a nomination though.
Saw it yesterday. I like dune for best picture tbh
Loved the movie. The only thing that was jarring was their warm weather clothing and lack of snow at Christmas. Jude Hill was just amazing.
