Hello, new sub here. First time Vege grower from seeds. 2 months ago I had motivation to go buy a bunch of seeds. I planted them in whatever container I could find and just left them on windowsills. They grew then I remembered I didn’t actually have a garden to plant them in or any tools to garden with. So this is me finding all the advice I can on planting and gardening. Also no one told me vegetable growing has seasons and best times to plant out. So far I’ve killed a passion fruit vine, and only one carrot is growing and it looks like I’ll be eating silverbeet for the rest of my life, and next time I’ll remember to label my containers because at this point I have no idea what’s what. Thank you for sharing your video, I really enjoyed watching this.
I had to give up my allotment at the end of last year so I thought I’d grow vegetables in containers now. I sowed a variety of seeds in seed compost in the conservatory and they’ve mostly all germinated and doing well. My problem now is it’s too early to plant out so potting will be my next job. It’s a learning curve scaling everything down. Good luck with the seedlings, Tony 😊
I think this year it could be lack of light & warmth. My brassicas are struggling & I'm doing everything as normal & using the same compost that I had great results with last year.
At 16:24 time on your vlog it looks like the tomato plant you're putting on the floating shelf has a slug catching a ride.... you might want to check the pots for slugs!
Tony, I have had a bumper year for chillies here in Melbourne and the bhut jolokia I planted also took longer to come good and I think they have a longer time to fruit than others. The Carolina reapers, however, were one of the first to give ripe fruit but my favourite this year has been the lemon drop or Ají Limo; they are hot but not excessive and have a very fruity citrus flavour. I made a sort of chutney with just loads of onion garlic the chillies and some salt and sugar. I have it in cheese sandwiches.
I was at Shincliffe Mill Nursery over the weekend with my parents, they have a great range of veg plants that were fairly cheap and all looked good quality, tomatoes are as big as the ones you've grown for only £1.80, 12 cell trays of veg plants for £2.50, sure they had plenty of cauliflowers and some other brassicas, well worth a visit.
Hi Tony, I have greenfly on my climb9ng rose 🙄 little blighters! I'm not taking my tomatoes or sweet peppers to my polytunnel for at least another week as we are still having low night time temps of 7°, I don't want to risk it. Nice job potting up and hope your tomatoes will be ok too. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
As we watch lots of different TH-cam channels we hear different bits of advice. I don't know how true it is but seemed to make some kinda sense to me. Buy new stock of compost as the longer it sits there the more the rain washed the goodness away. I guess this is because it's bagged at its peak. I don't think it was JBs video I think it was a flower farm. I see people re-use spent compost but that also wouldn't be something you'd start seeds with .just a thought x
Is there anywhere near you who will deliver compost ?, I can't lift either, I take advantage of the multiple offers, 3 for 2 ect, get bags of manure and woodchips so the savings cover the delivery charge. Love your videos. Thank you for taking the time to do them, look after yourself. 😊
I'm losing the will over composts. I think I've found a half decent one, but there are so many stones in it I could build a rockery. I'm with you on celeriac Tony. Mine look great, but do nothing. Good video, take care of yourself.
Hi Tony, I've had problems with the compost that we don't name. To be fair, when I first looked at it, I thought it was a weird consistency. Anyhow, I repotted in John Innes but chillies don't seem to be picking up like yours, very slow growth. I'll buy from garden centre this year. Wondering what to do with the five bags I have left and was thinking of using it as a path mulch, because that's what I feel it looks like.
i've had some brassicas given to me in the past that looked like ur's put them into a a well fertlizeed bed and give them a liquid feed as welll you will surprized how they take off had great cabbage
Hey chuck. Was thinking that you should come it those Bhut Joloka chilli’s on the outside of the greenhouse to get some light they look overshadowed by the big yins..look after yourself Nd don’t worry too much xx
His Tony ..all my plants are stunted this year .....my own fault I knew the compost was rubish ...I gave them a weak solution of cal mag last week and straight away they've taken off ....it's worth a try if you've got any calls mag left and any more plants your worried about
My brassicas where exactly the same not budging give them a weak watering of seaweed worked for me really got them going and give some to bettsie while your at it 😂😂
Hi Toni. I have also struggled with the Sylvagrow this year. Great germination then the seedlings have stalled. I know some of it is down to the low light levels we have had but even the tomatoes on heat mats and under lights have stalled . I am now using a weak seaweed fertiliser solution weekly and that seems to be helping but I can’t wait to get them in the ground.
Ditto, I repotted and added a small amount of blood, fish, and bone. Everything took off and is super healthy. So yes, I think Slyvagrow just ran out of steam very early, which hadn't happened in previous years.
Same here. Germination is great but then they either don't grow any bigger or the first and second set of true leaves fall off and I'm left with just a stem. I bought six bags of Sylvagrow at the start of the year and now I'm having to buy another brand as I can't risk anymore stalled sowings.
I dont get it heat mats lights blood fish and bone all tomato needs is a mid to late march sowing they will catch up with any january february plants and will be stronger with the natural light levels you dont need 3ft plants in mid april
@vickie_crafts Oh, Vickie, don't buy more compost! Just resow and when germinated and onto the first true leaves, immediately either repot with Slyvagrow with a small amount of blood, fish, and bone or give a 1/4 strength seaweed fertiliser. Just be careful not to add too much of any fertiliser as the baby roots could get burnt. 🤞
@wales123100 Nothing to do with catching up. I grew my chillies and peppers in Slyvagrow this year as I have done for the past 3 years. I sow in January, yes, using heat mats and lights, but this year they did stall and needed help. I am not going to sow chillies and peppers in March, as I would never get a crop, even being in the south of the UK.
Tony you need to calm down, keep getting frustrated is not helping with your health, don’t be in such a rush the plants will catch up in their own time. I purchased 3 x 50 litre bags of Levingtons compost from the Garden centre recently £13, problem I also have is lifting things so have changed my potato buckets from 30 litre to 10 litre.
Take it easy Tony. You might have to do less but do it well if you know what I mean. Rather than try to keep everything going and get overwhelmed. Last June I had surgery and I got stressed out about the garden! It should be a pleasure not a cause of worry and stress. (Talking to myself as much as you now!) Tried to make m own compost this year very successfully but have admitted defeat and decided to use bought for my seedlings 😊🪴
Hi Tony you got a lot of plants .Don't over think it .Take care of your self.

Its all just a learning curve, research the veg you want to grow, loads of videos on TH-cam!
Welcome.
Seems to have been nothing but rain for months now here in the North East, with the odd nice day. Here's hoping it gets better from now on!

I think this year it could be lack of light & warmth. My brassicas are struggling & I'm doing everything as normal & using the same compost that I had great results with last year.
I ended up getting brassicas from marshalls and growing on as my own brassicas always bolt or fail to grow

Hi Tony would it be possible to get a link to the label printer you use please?
Having the same issue with the same compost, I drove 45 miles each way to get it as well. Won’t be buying it again. 😢

Traditionally, green watering cans are for water and red for weedkiller. Always makes me cringe seeing you water with a red can. Or pink in your case.
It’s a jungle indeed!
I've just potted on all my tomatoes today. Leaving them in the greenhouse now jo room in the house, where did U get your Deep trays from
👍
