I always thought of shred as really digging in in a way that places emphases on the overall theme of the song in which it sits. A solo is SUBORNIDNATE to the song, not apart from it. A solo has to be almost self-aware in its sense of place in a song and its service to a song. "Sultans of Swing" is a perfect example of a song with a solo that works wonderfully. The outro solo is the icing on the cake. I always felt Jake E. Lee was channeling Sultans on "Bark at the Moon" with a solid middle solo and fantastic outro solo.

I commented on a shorter clip of this video. The 54 strat he's talking about isn't long lost. I have it. I bought it from him when I was a student of his at Second Hand Guitars in Berkeley. Probably in about 1980 or 1981. He used to play it at lessons, so when he sold it, I had to have it. Not as a collector. I was a starving college student, so collecting guitars wasn't within my reach. Just wanted my teacher's guitar. I still have it and I still play it.

@@MastersofShred I can definitely send some pictures. What is your email? It is currently not in the original state that I bought it in. I've had to change some hardware to keep it serviceable, but the finish is exactly as I bought it. avacado green sunburst with a tinted neck. About 20 years ago, one of the pickups stopped working. I changed it for a newer pickup, but the balance between the new and old was just way out. I will rewind it "one of these days". I stopped playing it for quite some time for fear that I would break more stuff on it. This bummed me out as I loved playing it. In any case, at some point I took off all the original hardware and put it in a box. I bought replica hardware and refitted it. The replica hardware is actually quite good. If you compare it to the original, it is spot on except it's shiny and it works. I changed out the entire pickguard and pickups. I don't think the pickguard was original from 54. It was black/white/black. Pretty sure the pickups and all the electronics were original 54. The neck I believe is a 55 as it has date in pencil on it. I was told once that this wasn't that uncommon back then and that it may have come that way from the factory. Who knows? I 'm not a collector so i don't really care. The neck has a missing dot that was missing when I bought it. With all the new parts, it is actually a really nice instrument and I play it all the time now so I am happy. I can always put it back to the way it was. I may have old pictures of the origianl state and can take some good photos of the now state so you can see the finish. I'll send some pics of the original hardware too. I believe I was told that the finish was done by Kamamoto. Don't know if that's true or not. In any case, I think it's beautiful.

I think this guy spent a lot of time in front of the mirror before his interview with Joe.

Love Joe, but…c’mon. Here he defines “shred” as anything played with attitude or feeling. He’s redefining the word into meaninglessness. Shred means to play fast with great articulation…but yeah…it has to sound good to. Slash isn’t a shredder, but he does shred on Paradise City. Neil Young…no. It’s not an insult to say someone doesn’t “shred”. Let’s stop redefining words…just use the appropriate ones instead.

@@Me4-gc8qs it’s about the English language. And, I’m giving my opinion. Your comment doesn’t allude to anything I’ve said. You’re just making assumptions and trying in vain to insult me unnecessarily. How about explaining to me why you think you’re so superior…that you find my comment laughable. If you want to have an actual conversation about it, that’s fine.

I think tho what Satch said holds weight. Pre 80s people would’ve classed Page, Frehley, Iommi et al as “shredders” but more players just keep pushing the envelope and bringing guitar playing to newer boundaries. But post 88, it’s more than fair enough shred has lost the essence of it being hey look at me I’m gonna really get your attention and pull notes from the deepest parts within to hey look man I’m faster than the last guy.
Don’t get me wrong, I love racer X just as much as the next guy, guitarists who were with shrapnel were who I idolized for the long time. But you can’t tell me that when you hear Prince kick in that first bend in purple rain you don’t just lean your head back and air guitar and sustain that note as long as you can. That’s shred, that’s hey check this fuckin shit out this rocks, not “I guess u practiced ur Lydian runs this week man”
