    I love this game! I first played D2 shortly after it launched in my dorm room--good times. It would be a dream come true to get the chance to play the original concept for the game. I do like that save files work on either the JP or NA versions of the game. The extra goodies Sketches1/2, the vinyl record and OST are items I hope to find one day. Thanks for the video and for keeping D2 alive!

      I certainly hope to find the original version one day if it’s still out there. I never stop hunting but every year that goes by makes it less and less likely

    I regret not picking this up when it released. I skipped it because I heard it was censored for the U.S. release. Years later I learned the censoring was minimal, mostly having to do with the tentacle scene.

    After watching the last couple entries in this series this was the one I eagerly awaited and you did not disappoint, so many great games getting rereleases and remakes over the last couple of years like the TMNT Cowabunga Collection, The Marvel vs Capcom Collection ect, D2 has been on my list of most deserved and needed, I absolutely love this game , D was great and honestly never played Enemy Zero ( though no excuse now with Saturn emulation getting better), I would buy it day one.

    The 6th generation was the last great one imo games were still cheap enough to develop so we had the AA Devs to fill in the gaps we had so many interesting games trying new things nowadays games are too expensive and have to go for hyper realism so everything seems to play and feel so similar nowadays

    • @VideoGameEsoterica

      Exactly. Now games are such a financial risk nobody really wants to experiment

    • @erick103
      @erick103 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can find experimentation in the indie scene, there's lots of amazing games out there, but I think it was more exciting when everyone was playing the same things.

    • @VideoGameEsoterica
      @VideoGameEsoterica  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes I enjoyed it more when the weird experimental games were also major releases

    • @Jabjabs
      @Jabjabs หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@erick103 It is always a shame when you find some indie thing that is amazing only to find that very few other people have ever heard of it. That unification has been splinted to some degree. I suspect we will regain some of this again in time but it will be a rough road getting there.

    From Japan. I've been a longtime fan of Eno. Despite its classic and linear gameplay, D2 had a unique open-world-like feel to its vast and desolate field exploration. I have fond memories of playing it obsessively with a friend who was a fan of King's Field at the time.
    What are the two titles mentioned at 14:45 in the video? (Sorry, I couldn’t quite catch them.) If I can get them, I’d love to give them a try.

    D2 was one of the very first Dreamcast games ever shown. I remember going on holiday in ‘97 and buying a magazine in the airport. It had a big feature about the reveal of the Dreamcast and loads of info on D2. I was always curious about the game, but it never got a European release so I never got to play it. I’ll have to check it out now I’ve got a GDEmu.

      3do was the OG.. it was then ported
      since it is mostly a point and click ish type game... play it on whatever you can... i wouldn't say it has a "best console" - but if you are playing on original hardware. saturn would probably be best since it had RGB and scart abilities.....

    • @casanovafunkenstein5090
      @casanovafunkenstein5090 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I doubt that he would have been keen to return to it in all honesty.
      He could have made D2 to that original design but chose not to and the project that brought him back to developing games was You, Me, and the Cubes, which is nothing alike.
      Eno strikes me as someone who was motivated by doing something new and groundbreaking with every project he worked on and I sense that if he'd legitimately wanted to make that happen he would have been able to do so on his own terms as he was in charge of the studio and the IP and code base were company property.
      I would imagine that the M2 would be similar enough to the first generation 3DO that you'd have been capable of running the code (or at least editing and compiling it) on a period appropriate Mac or PC workstation (I'll defer to people with more knowledge than me, but I recall Ewhac stating that the in house 3DO software was developed on Mac and not using a special dev kit and M2 development workflow could have worked similarly) so the chances are that the decision to scrap the existing game was motivated by a sense that they'd worked on the initial concept to the point of fatigue and didn't want to either remake it in its entirety or find a means to create a port (which may have been possible through the windows compatibility, but would have required booting the OS via the discs, sacrificing RAM and incurring licensing costs from Microsoft as the Dreamcast didn't have the OS installed on the system chip)
      It's also possible that the original version of the game would have been more expensive to do than the revised concept (Warp had never included melee combat in a game beforehand and they'd just spent a significant amount of money on a flagship title that never came out, so transitioning to the first person combat with guns and minimal animation would have been much cheaper and less finicky to get working) so the game was redesigned to facilitate a quicker development time in order to try and save the company from bankruptcy. I imagine making the environments into snowy mountains and less elaborate indoor environments was also a lot more cost effective than completely re-doing a medieval castle with intricate textures and lighting. Much easier to just make everything white, I imagine. The final boss even turns off the graphics in the second phase, so it's not unreasonable to infer that a few creative choices were motivated by a desire to lower costs in creative ways.
      I'd really love to see the older build running, but I don't know if Eno would have been the person to bring it to us. It was probably a bit of a nightmare project for him and the team, so it's understandable if he'd have been reluctant to share it.

    • @SamMcDonald83
      @SamMcDonald83 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ dunno Eno seemed like a pretty unstoppable guy when he wanted to. It's certainly interesting that he just completely abandoned what seems to have been a virtually complete game.
      Maybe he could have done it as personal delivery to his five top fans and let them work it out ...

Tried it recently on an emulator, what a dump, the game design is questionable at best, you roam through the snow from the cabin to the plane, to the cabin, to the mines, with random battles, the way you move, the dialogue, her being on a mini skirt on the snow, LMAO, it is all terrible, sorry, but I felt like I wasted 3 hours of my life, I left it during the dungeon in the mines because I really was having a terrible experience with the game.
