    my favorite Beast Mode Reviewer! there is a knife for everyones needs and budgets luckily, but one thing I love is that you put the "hard use" and VERY EXPENSIVE knives to the test and put your money were your mouth is and let the chips fall be it good or bad. As always Respect to you, and thanks for not just cutting paper and talking about smoothness, when I buy a $50 or 500 knife I except them to perform, look good, feel good, and take a serious beating if some some reason I was stranded or left in the woods. I know people say "get a fixed blade" but fixed blades just are not something Im comfortable carrying for my own reasons. Anyways Respect and hope one day your patreon or youtube help pay for some of the shit you due in these experiments.

    Hey @Neroknives
    I and my large Inkosi completely agree with you. From my personal experience, those larger frame locks like Inkosi/Sebeneza/Umnumzaan from CRK are totally well designed and prepared for hard use and then some. Because of smart choice of the right balance between hardness and durability in S35VN that is otherwise not as supermodern like M390 and others steels, but doest chip and roll as easily in return. Also unlike Medford Praetorian/Extrema Ratio RAO/Cold Steel AD10 can also cut anything very well without just splitting the material :D
    So more practical and still overbuild in the right places (ie. large washers, stop pin, and around the pivot in general) because of that feels like a tank.

      Usually knives aren’t up to that type of thing. The pm2 is an example.
      Cutlery steel is a very extreme material compared to everything else, when you tune geometry and hardness and carbide volume you can make something that’s basically indestructible. The key is to prevent the knife from even yielding.
      I’d be scared to pry super heavy stuff with a strider because of the deployment hole, you can imagine how that would be a stress area

    I'm learning here so bear with me: So what would happen if in an ideal world we have two knives with different steels, let's say sandvik and D2, heat treated to 60 rockwell, both knives have the exact same behind the edge thickness, same blade geometry, the edge angles are also the same and the apex is appropriately centered what would happen? How much does the metals composition play a role with working edge retention?

    • @neroknives1828
      @neroknives1828  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On it's own composition plays a very small role in determining edge retention. For instance, if you take two steels, one a simple steel like 1095 and the other maximet. If you blow the ht on maximet and it only comes out at 55 hrc, and you nail the HT on your 1095 and it comes out at 64 hrc. The simple 1095 will have higher edge retention.
      Composition, edge angle, and ht together determine edge retention. If you screw one up, it falls apart.

    • @lyndylou1686
      @lyndylou1686 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@neroknives1828 So if you "condition" your knife appropriately regardless of the steel you can maximize its potential and if its (assumingly) heat treated right I can get a damn good life out of it? I just got a great deal on a knife with s35vn made by WE and I do a lot of work with cardboard(I work in shipping and receiving) and need a knife to last me my entire 8hr shift and can't really afford top of the line steels.

    • @neroknives1828
      @neroknives1828  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lyndylou1686 I'm not sure what you mean by condition.
      With s35vn from we, we can assume it's a decent ht. So we have a couple options on how to increase its edge retention to make it last 8hrs.
      Starting with the easy one's
      1. You can have a simple little strop or stone that fits in your pocket, cheap and will keep you cutting pretty much indefinitely.
      2. We can lower the edge angle. Lowering the edge angle of a knife will greatly increase it's edge retention. Even if you only lower it by a cuple degrees.
      3. Regrind the knife. The thinner a knife is behind the edge, the lower you can sharpen it increasing edge retention. Also the thinner a knife is behind the edge, right around. 010 the knife no longer needs to he sharp to cut. So again you can basically cut indefinitely like that as well.
      All good options. If you want you can do 1 or pick 2 or do all 3. It's really up to you. But any one of them will be beneficial.

    I use knives all the time, pretty hard too. I don't abuse them though. Knives arent meant for prying, not even fixed blades. They are meant for cutting, slashing and stabbing though. I've seen many liner and frame locks fail with very little pressure, back locks not so much and never a Triad lock equipped knife. In my experience I'd take a triad over a frame or liner lock any day for hard use. Then again if a guy is smart he will always remember that a folding knife is a folding knife, that a lock can fail and use the knife accordingly. Even with Cold steel I'm very aware of when I'm doing something that could possibly put my fingers in danger should a failure occur. That said I don't trust frame locks or liner locks for hard use.
