      Just do table top reviews like most everyone else with your many months of "hard use" knives still with factory edges. :P

      Do NOT use only tabletop view; explaining about deploying a knife or how to pull out from pocket needs a body view. Also, you can use front view like BladeHQ, it's more official.

    Agree on flippers completely! I don't currently own a single flipper!do own an Umnumzaan though ;)
    Surprised you didn't mention the other significant disadvantage of flipper knives: the damn flipper tab is in the way of getting the knife close to a surface you are cutting on.
    As always love your sensible, function based evaluation of knives. Patreon +1

    Thumbstud/spydie hole is also more secure. Once I was opening my ZT 0562 and because of the weak grip you end up with right after opening a flipper knife, the momentum of the heavy blade and my own clumsiness, the knife flew out of my hand, I tried to catch it, I got cut and the knife fell on the ground. I ended up with 2 or 3 stitches, a scratched spine of the blade and some marks on the titanium and the clip (thankfully it didn't fall on the edge of the blade). I don't think this would ever happen with thumbstud/hole knife.

    I totally agree with you. I prefer thumb studs or spydie holes over a flipper.
    Not only because of the ease and how quickly it deploys, but also because of the ergonomics and carry profile.

    Personal preferences aside, we have to master each tool.
    You can't use the same grip and pull on every knife and have the same efficiency.
    To play devil's advocate...
    One could argue that you don't know how to use a flipper properly, or you haven't developed sufficient skill, which is why your draw is so awkward and slow.
    All I know is, no matter how much I play with my toys, I still have failed deployments and get bit.
    I just Love that we have so many flavors to choose from and plenty to talk about.
    Even if you can't afford them all, you can go to a local place and touch them or ogle others' candy on the internet.
    Thanks for the upload.
    Hope you enjoy the rest of this holiday season, and you and yours have a safe, happy, healthy, and fortuitous 2020.

    Finally someone is talking about something I've realized a while ago. The only knife I have that's even quicker is middle flicking the Dao, it's just flick, grab and rip. The handle is already in-line with the palm. Not my favorite knife though... With my thumb stud deployments, I still need to preposition the handle about a quarter turn. Fractions of a second but noticeable when used as tools. OTF's are great but get any sort of gunk or tape and it becomes a PIA.

  • @dewarner12
    @dewarner12 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree thumb studs, openings, or fullers allow you to deploy a knife quicker than a flipper. On knives that have multiple means of deployment, whenever I need to get the blade out quickly, I more naturally default to using my thumb to deploy the knife.

  • @slabside67

    Maybe give those jeans the same low drag, efficient, tactikool assessment. One hand to deploy knife, two hands to return knife. My knife is a tool. My pants are a tool. I’m not a tool. Couldn’t see my self pulling out my knife while up on my staging cuz I gotta cut something that I might b holding, only to have no where to put my knife cuz I don’t have 2 hands to stretch my pocket out. 💩

    Hi Nero,
    with the thumb stud you have the hands were you want them but the edge is facing towards you as if you were to do pull cutting.
    If a thumb stud is done bad, it often is in the way when cutting, especially with shorter blades.
    A hole is better in this regard but adds a lot of hight to the blade and/or leads to large unergonomic cutouts, grooves or bows in the handle.
    When opened with the middle finger, you just have to slide your hand in position instead of rotating the knife compared to operation with the thumb.
    Flippers, I do not like at all because of the flipper tap sticking out.

    Happy New Year!
    I agree with your preference for thumbstuds/holes, but for me that's mainly about having the option of 'slow-rolling'. Still I do like a flippertab because it'll also act as a fingerguard. But since you seem pretty much focused on self-defense: What's your take on the Emerson Wave?

      Give them a shot man. I hated them till i finally caved and put one on my knife. Haven't looked back since.
      They can really change the ergonomics of the deployment for the better on a lot of knives.

    • @davidmarshall7752
      @davidmarshall7752 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@neroknives1828 Yeah I could see that in this video. It's like your fingers can't help but snag the lanyard and have instant purchase. BTW: I had the bevels of several knives reconfigured to have narrower secondaries and are now much thinner behind the edge... and you're right, I can't go back ;) As for suggestions, how about why blade stock thickness is important but overemphasized.

    Hey, glad to see you back :) I actually timed myself with flippers vs normal deployment and I had faster deployment times with flippers (should have filmed it, might do that someday xD). But honestly I do not care that much, if I like the knife and the design, I`ll deal with whatever deployment method it has :D

    For me and my hands, personally it's the opposite. More fumbling and shifting my hand with thumbstuds or especially a hole than a flipper, even more so if it's tip down. With a hole you can do the zip tie wave thing though, so that (or of course an actual wave knife) would be my choice for a self defense folder. Then again, I'd prefer a fixed blade anyway.

    I dont really see much difference...you canmake the same amount of movements for both...or make it as complicated for both... As easy as it is to use a thumb stud or a hole and flick it open... there are some people who find it difficult... and tbf it does take a bit of getting acustomed to especially if its a new knife.... I prefer a thumb stud or hole over a flipper too... but more because of the aesthetics.... the flipper ruins the sleekness... and alsoit gets in the way....for example when chopping on a board you cant get as close to the board as the flipper tab is in the way.... To have a thumb stud/hole and a welll designed flipper tab that doesnt get in the way and blends into the aesthetics is ideal... but it doesnt happen nearly enough... like a Vero Synapse is perfectly done....

    • @neroknives1828
      @neroknives1828  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope can't carry automatic knives. And hollow points are legal but it's complicated just like everything when it comes to self protection in NJ.
      NJ you aren't allowed to carry anything for self defense. The only way you can carry a knife is if you say you use it to cut stuff at work or during the day. Horrible state don't recommend it.

    This knife my dude, it can open all the ways! And has bearings. Also the point in the middle of the grind comes in handy sometimes. The Emerson wave feature was a great idea but his knives suck and I like how this knife takes it one step further with out having to pay for his patent. Probably one of the best self defense folders short of a dedicated karambit knife imo, cheers. www.knifecenter.com/item/VP5910FC/viper-knives-maga-folding-satin-n690co-recurved-blade-carbon-fiber-handle

    Flippers are faster. You can deploy the knife as soon as the handle clears the pocket .

    • @neroknives1828
      @neroknives1828  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not in my experience. I can start deploying thumb studs the same time i start to deploy a flipper. I think you can get the blade open quicker on a flipper. But when it comes to deployment and being in useful grip. The thumb studs are quicker because of the less steps required to sabor grip.

    • @hooliganAvail
      @hooliganAvail 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@neroknives1828 for me the flipper is faster . I still have to roll my grip with either means to get it in a secure position. Either way it's still one action and that split second I gain with the flipper on actually deploying my blade makes it faster for me. IT'S All a matter of minutiae but like you said we are kinda nerdy. Glad your back

    • @jojojaykay
      @jojojaykay 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. While I prefer thumb studs 99% of the time, I’ve never owned a flipper that was slower to open than a thumb stud. Maybe if I had some bigger folders it would be a problem; but generally my finger is already touching the flipper tab( through my jeans) before the knife even leaves my pants and it’s just a matter of pushing down once it clears to open it.
