  • Music is everything - so here are the TruCru's picks for must-have albums for your collection. From Sinatra to Sleater-Kinney, Eno- heads to Emo kids, there's a lil' something for everyone. Let us know in the comments what albums, artists and tracks you love. And cuz we're tru2u, we're including a Spotify playlist with a song from each record for your listening pleasure. (EXCEPT Prince... there's only ONE Prince tune on Spotify, "Stare" -- not from Dirty Mind but it's sexy, funky and a classic Prince jam -- so it's on our list =)

    • @itsthetrustory
      @itsthetrustory  7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Point well taken ALTHOUGH I'd argue that grunge and emo both have punk roots, so there's the connection.

    • @VinylandKicks86
      @VinylandKicks86 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      true but very vague statement as most rock sub genres have roots in punk but none the less still cringe worthy but i also was once a teenager who liked crappy emo music.overall some very good music that you all showed as i have more than a few of the albums in my collection.

    I enjoyed this, nice job!
    Here are some of my LP recommendations:
    Jack White - Lazaretto (record has hidden easter eggs)
    The Pistons - Flight 581 (more obscure 70's rock)
    The Black Keys - El Camino
    Boston - Third Stage
    Pink Floyd - The Wall
    Guardians of the Galaxy Soundtrack (lots of great classics)

      Thanks Shawn - how my list had NO Jack White on it is iNSANE and WRONG - in every iteration he is the end all be all. I have to check out the Pistons, LOVE Black Keys, I'm from Boston so hell ya Boston, Pink Floyd The Wall is so intensely formative I can't even -- and Guardians of the Galaxy was genius on all levels! THANKS for your picks!

  • @ebuygum17

    Great video ladies! I like the fact that you had a real mix of vinyl covering several decades. Personally I would recommend:
    Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures (a perfect, 10/10 album!)
    Kyuss - Sky Valley (best thing Josh Homme has ever been a part of)
    Leftfield - Leftism (especially 'Open Up' feat. John Lydon on vocals)
    Nina Simone - I Put a Spell on you (for me the best female vocalist of all time)
    Mark Lanegan Band - Blues Funeral (St.Louis Elegy sends shivers down my spine every time)
    The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses (best album of the 80's)

    • @itsthetrustory
      @itsthetrustory  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh man, Joy Division AND Stone Roses! You got me right there - and now I have to listen to Leftfield (the John Lydon song) and of course Nina Simone.

  • @turntablesrockmyworld9315
    @turntablesrockmyworld9315 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for sharing some of your favorite albums! I have/had most of them, and quite a few are essential for a well-rounded rock collection. My only beef is that a lot of those LPs look like "new" repressings LPs; true collectors care about pressings, etc., or else it the just acquiring/consumerism end of the format,. But that's only my perspective. Also, vinyl isn't necessarily better sounding, it can also have more imperfections - and one really needs a good turntable, amplifier, and speakers to really notice any difference between vinyl and uncompressed digital sources. But it's all fun, and I much prefer to overall end product of the LP record format and the enjoyment it brings. It also makes me poor. Poor but happy :)

    • @itsthetrustory
      @itsthetrustory  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Turntables Rockmyworld you are totally right - I did resort to new pressings and it is TOTALLY not the same experience. I am much happier trolling used record shops and yard sales and finding gems. That U2 Unforgettable Fire is original and the crackle and a couple of little scratches make me very happy, for example. Thanks so much for chiming in!

  • @cultvult
    @cultvult 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, first chick on the left. You had that awesome Eno theme going starting with Unforgettable Fire, through his Bowie collaborations, but didn't even mention that he also produced,, and had so much influence on, Fear of Music, your very next pick after Unforgettable Fire! Did it just slip your mind? And how about an Eno solo album pick, like Here come the warm jets, or Taking Tiger Mountain(by strategy)? So essential in his own right!

    • @itsthetrustory
      @itsthetrustory  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you're right and actually my favorite Eno album pure & simple - Music for Airports. AND I'm a little bit obsessed (OK A LOT OBSESSED) with Reflection. I work to it all the time. (Could've sworn I said Fear of Music was a an Eno produced master work - maybe I just put it out there psychically).

    @BoingBB 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know about 'must haves' but there's some good stuff there for sure. I notice in the comments people are surprised you didn't include certain other artists - but that's the thing about record collections, not everybody likes (or buys) the same music!

      BBB ahhh I love hearing what everyone else picks!! What would you add??

    • @BoingBB
      @BoingBB 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@itsthetrustory - Well I'm an old British guy whose musical tastes are pretty much stuck in the 1970s! All the classic bands and artists from that time are in my collection - everything from the Aerosmith to Frank Zappa, from bluegrass to psychedelic rock - also some jazz and classical music... a bit of everything really. I have more than 1300 vinyl albums so its hard to pick my favourites tbh. One thing though, I'm still buying those old vinyl albums and I'm still discovering great music I never bothered with at the time. There was such a lot around then that you couldn't possibly keep up with it all!

    • @BoingBB
      @BoingBB 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I might suggest Jethro Tull, Dr Hook (the early stuff is best), the Eagles, the Who and 10cc.

    • @itsthetrustory
      @itsthetrustory  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s amazing!! And I’m right there with you- nothing better than trolling original vinyl to find a gem. Traffic’s “Low Spark if High Heeled Boys” for example springs to mind as a must. And I’m with you on Aerosmith & the Eagles too- will always have a sentimental soft spot- especially Aerosmith cuz I’m from Boston.

Talking heads good stuff nice one. can't go wrong with Bowie, Cat Stevens never left my TT that one & teaser & the Fire cat & Boston's first Lp.. Love the Marley Man!!!! I think the bulk of my collection is classic rock, but I stray into all kind of areas. Some of my choices include:
    Rush- 2112
    Kansas- Song for America
    Blue Oyster Cult- Secret Treaties
    War- Why Can't We Be Friends
    Rick James- Street Songs (not a nice guy, but boy did he have the Funk)
    Earth Wind And Fire- Gratitude
    Eddie Kendricks-Eddie Kendricks (formally a Temptation)
    Evanescence- Fallen
    Fred Astaire- Starring Fred Astaire
    So hard to choose with so much great music out there. I love my vinyl so much! It was such a great way to get your music and made it an experience, cleaning and changing the album, admiring the cover art and reading the liners. Such a great form factor that unsuccessfully In my opinion, they try to fit in a CD case.
    I'm currently down a KPop hole and really wish I could get some of it on Vinyl.
    Have a rockin day!

    Songs For Swingin’ Lovers isn’t a compilation by the way, it’s one of Sinatra’s classic albums he made with legendary composer/arranger Nelson Riddle!
    Anyway great video, my top desert island picks would be:
    Clouds, Blue, Court And Spark And Hejira by Joni Mitchell
    Hounds Of Love by Kate Bush
    John Coltrane And Johnny Hartman
    Once In Every Life by Johnny Hartman
    Fleetwood Mac (1975)
    Ella At Dukes Place
    To Be Continued... by Isaac Hayes
    Come To My Garden by Minnie Riperton
    Frank Sinatra Sings For Only The Lonely
    Thriller by Michael Jackson

      Also a good song. They have so many!
      Over the years, I've been to their concerts at least three times.
      I have all their albums through Good Stuff. And a bunch of random singles and special release stuff.
      I used to have a personalized license plate the said B52FAN.
      It all started because I had a crush on a girl (back in '89) that looked like Cindy Wilson.

    Have you guys ever tried classical music?

    • @itsthetrustory
      @itsthetrustory  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to admit when I'm listening to classical, I love it - and I don't really listen to it enough. What are your favorites? I'm open to stepping my musical tastes up....

    • @larrymagee8758
      @larrymagee8758 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's The TruStory oh what a can of worms I've opened up! I really don't have a "favorite," as with most classical music "it's all good." You could start with the Classics like Beethoven and Mozart. Then move on to the heavy stuff, as B&M are just "gateway drugs." That would be Mahler, Bruckner, and Stravinsky. And let's not forget Ravel/Debussy, Shostakovich, the list is endless.
      As far as conductors go, that's another C.O.W. I would stick with the classics here too. Anything by Karajan, Bernstein, Solti, is great. You can't go wrong with almost anything by them. I recently picked up a set of the complete Mahler symphonies, conducted by Pierre Boulez, that's excellent. But there are younger conductors out there like Francois-Xavier Roth, and Yannick Nezet-Seguin, that are making excellent recordings.
      I love piano music too. Apart from the greats like Horowitz, Richter, and Michelangeli, there's this "kid" named Daniil Trifonov that I really like. His recording of Rachmaninov's Piano Concertos 2&4 is excellent. It's just a matter of exploring. Just go to Amazon, or wherever, put one of these artists in search, and it should come up a number of great selections. It's hard to go wrong with any of them

      @itsthetrustory  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Cure - Disintegration
    Drop Nineteens - Delaware (hella rare to find on vinyl but if you ever see it, it's 100% worth it; the song Kick The Tragedy in particular is spectacular. If you're into Nirvana and other similar bands of the era, you'll like the Nineteens.)
    The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead

    Every time I go to the record store its just a Bro's gathering desolate and void of any females of any variety, much less this redhead cutie. 🦄

    Zeppelin, Bowie, The Clash, Springsteen, Nirvana are cool but no Beatles, Stones, Who, Pink Floyd, Doors, Creedence, Kinks, Sabbath, Deep Purple. I think I'd end up blowin' my brains out on this desert island...but it is your desert island after all.

      Robert Saul true that but if I had a longer list I’d add Wish you were here, hot rocks (greatest hits I know but still), White album- what’re your picks?

      @@itsthetrustory I actually would cheat and select all boxsets when I could. Beatles - The Album remastered box from 2014, Bruce has a box with his lps up to Born in The USA. The Doors - The Doors of Perception (all their studio albums +) , Bowie - 3 recent boxes that have all his 70's albums, etc. You get the idea. Lol
