I must have watched every Pennine Way video on TH-cam and this one is my favourite; it really captures the spirit of long distance walking and there’s something really profound and poetic about it. You’re a great character and I admire your deep-seated passion for the outdoors. Many thanks, Dexter, and maybe we’ll cross paths out in the wilderness some day.
Hi Phil, thanks so much for taking the time to leave this wonderful comment, I really appreciate that. Comments like this make me consider picking up the camera again after a couple of years off! I've just had a watch of your videos and love your music - that is real talent!
Great record of your walk Dexter I really enjoyed that. Your comment north of Alston where you said that you couldn't separate yourself from the Pennine Way at that point rings so true. I guess many people simply complete the trail, abut others emerge with it completely intertwined with them. I first walked the PW back in 1982 at the age of 15, and walked it again several times including as a section of my Lands End to JohnO'Groats backpack in 1985. I now live close to Hebden Bridge and out on the south Pennines sections every week, and each time I feel the urge to just follow it further North or South. I'm glad in many ways that the route lost much of it's appeal in the 90's in the wake of Wainwrights C2C, and over the years it became a walk of solitude again. I've done many of the big walks in the UK (CWT, Cambrian Way, Southern Upland Way etc), but the PW is the one which I will always feel a personal connection to.
Hey John, thanks for checking out the video. Super interesting comments, I had no idea the Pennine Way was busier back in the 80's? I probably saw about 10 hikers on my whole trip and only hiked with other people for half a day. Thankfully I don't live too far from the trail (Holmfirth area) myself and revisited Black Hill a couple of weekends ago. The weather was truly awful and made me even more thankful for my wonderful trip this summer. That's incredible that you did a LE to JOG. I've actually left my job to spend next year hiking (spring onwards) the dream is the PCT but with that looking less and less likely my backup is a ridiculous winding JOGLE including CWT and Cambrian way. Would love to hear your recommendations on sections that can't be missed.
@@easydexter yes the PW was extremely popular in the late 70's & early 80's, it became a sort of right of passage or coming of age for many young adventurous people. But that also took it's toll on the route, and by the mid 80's some sections were so worn and boggy that walking it became a test of emotional and physical endurance. Tales of people literally sinking up to their thighs on Black Hill and getting lost on Bleaklow were not exaggerated. And the failure and drop out rate back then was very high. Though some bemoan the path repairs and rerouting particularly in the first 40 miles, I think they've helped to give the PW a second life, and still retain it's position as one for connoisseurs. I go back sometimes and follow a couple of the notorious sections that were rerouted after the Millenium, e.g. from Black hill direct across Wessenden Moor and Featherbed Moss, and if you know where to look you can still find a couple of 50 year old trail markers.
This looked Epic Dexter ! Great video and what a trail. Just finished binge watching all your hikes 🙌🏻 And can’t wait to receive my Mo of you legends at Atom Hq 🤘🏻

Dude! I loved every second of this. Such a pleasure following you along and watching your journey unfold. Dinosaurs, ET’s and salty hair. You brought so much entertainment. Thanks for putting this together man. You’ve got me super stoked for my Cleveland Way hike dude.
Wow thanks so much for checking it out man. Really appreciate it. I'll stay pumped to see your CW vid when you return. That trail is top of my list! Maybe next spring.
Great video Dexter, I had the pleasure of walking the way Sobo this summer and what a joy it was. Can’t wait to experience more of the trails magic 🤙 you really capture it well 👍
Awesome video Dexter! Really get a feel for the trail, and it was really cool being part of your journey. Love the crisp boy song and nice hat! Can't wait to hike the PW now thank you! Also, really cool that you got to enjoy a beer after so long, well done dude, and certainly a great new chapter because as I type this you're trekking your legs off on the End to End Trail! Great to have met you and happy trails man! x
I'm desperately hoping that we start to get something similar to America. People thru hiking a lot. We already have amazing people leaving honesty boxes for hikers and the coastal path is almost finished. I don't think it will be long. I live to backpack.
Hi Ian, thanks for revisiting this one. The Pennine Way will always be a really special walk for me and still can't believe I managed to do this just 5 months after breaking my leg. Happy New Year mate. Hope 2022 is a great year for you.
@@easydexter experience is everything. I failed the downs. I had 27 kilos on. Thought I'd be the same as when I served, no problem. I'm thinking about getting a set of trainers, my boots are good but i feel like they're probably slowing me down a bit. Just wanna say, you are an inspiring man. I watched your record breaking walk a couple of days back. Beast mode!
I really enjoyed that. I feel as though I was there with you. My son and his girlfriend did it 4 years ago and my grandson and I were the gofers and we loved it. We are so lucky to have so many trails in this beautiful of ours. Thankyou dexter for letting us join you on your treck.
Thanks so much for your wonderful comment Pauline and I'm really happy you enjoyed the video. At first I was planning on keeping it for myself as a little memory of the trail but seeing comments likes yours makes me glad I shared it. I completely agree the UK is a beautiful country and the fact we have these national trails and public footpaths means there is endless fun to be had. Thanks again.
Nice one Dexter. Congrats on a big achievement after your injury. We must have been on TPW around the same time as I bumped into those guys as well. Of all the TPW videos / blogs.........this has to be the most honest! You laid everything out there mate and that / what is genuine and heartfelt. Nature is indeed a great provider. The photography, editing and score play was fantastic. All in all, this was utterly compelling. Well done again.
Wow Ian thanks so much for the kind words. Will fingers crossed be filming some more long distance walks next year, and putting more production value in. The video for this one was very much just for me to remember the trip by but thanks to encouragement from people like you I will put a little more thought and effort in to the next one. Congrats to you also on completing the Pennine Way. What a walk, aye? That's a shame we didn't bump in to each other, I hardly met anyone on the whole trail. Good luck with all your future adventures!
