Dragon Types in Competitive Pokemon.

- Competitive Singles has seen many different Dragon types throughout the years.
Dragon Types had a modest start, finding their footing in Gen 3 with the release of Salamence and the solid attacking option of Dragon Claw.
In Gens 4 and 5, Dragon Type is infamously powerful, abusing the newly buffed Outrage and the monstrous Draco Meteor.
But even with the new Fairy type of Gen 6, Dragons would remain solid throughout the years.
With their Great resistances and strong attacking options, this is a type that does very well competitively.

Magcargo Horse by This fellow:
x.com/100techs/status/1795443369860055527?t=U5oHiQFw6_rDV_YTbSHUwA&s=19
U forgot about Haxorus on Gen V
We now need GameFreak to make this Mega Magcargo
this is epic
100techs deserves some horse power for their dedication and service to Magcargo
@@gonzalotorneralonso417 47:02
The tyrannical rule of the Dragon types is over but at what cost? Are we truly happier being Moonblasted than Outraged? This is a conversation GameFreak doesn't want you to have with your family and friends.
This is true. Played a few games of Gen 7 OU yesterday where I 1v1'd a Heatran with my support Clefable. Truly a tragedy
I’d rather have to run three Pokémon with insomnia on every team to counter dream eater spam than ever ever have Azumarill “play rough” with me again…
The clear path forward is to have a new type that beats fairy to save us from fairy.
It should also smash and resist bug types to stay on brand.
@@andy4anSteel? Are you just talking about Steel? Do you want to give a steel weakness to bug? Are you out of your mind? Are you complete nuts? Do you really mean STEEL?
@@GrayVMhan
no, it should be a new type that's strong against fairy, dragon, bug and steel. i'm tired of those types dominating.
Magcargo has now achieved Higher Horsepower after acquiring true horse legs. This is insane.
Jimothy could literally make a 1 hour video about the history of Magcargo and the horse council and Id drop everything to watch it
I love the lore bits, I would love full videos about the lore
For real. His narrating style is outstanding in the field
A dragon that is a bike, with stats. The mere concept brings me to the brink of insanity.

just like how magcargo will be getting a redesign by gamefreak soon once he gets enough horsepower
The extreme speed at which I clicked on this, incredible
Only used quick attack sadly :(
Sucker
Luckily I opened TH-cam to this, so I was able to use fake out
I bet the early video members used upper hand
what's extremespeed?
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't show it how to use its new legs... unless that water happens to contain the Pokémon Corsola, who has four legs and also shares a half-Rock typing with Magcargo. Surely Corsola's invaluable assistance will give Magcargo the power to use his new legs to their full potential, and emerge victorious in the civil war. Thank you.
Some might wonder why corsola isn't on the Horse Council. The answer is simple, folks. For a time, he was, but he realized it was too much of a responsibility and dropped out to focus on his career. This paid off, because now Corsola can use his vast wealth and experience to help his old pal Magcargo.
2:04 future paradox form of Jim is trying to send a message to us through past Jim
I didn't care for his legendary pronunciation at first but after awhile it Grewdon me.
Now imagine if Lickitung was a dragon type….
That... actually doesn't NOT make sense
The move Lick should be given an extra 100 Base Power when Lickitung uses it.
as an old gens fan, hearing about the Necrozma forms makes me feel like a Victorian child
2:02
The voices that have been relaying the Horse Council lore to Jimothy have revealed themselves to us. This is incredible.
I really need someone to make a compilation of all of the Jimothy Cool lore. I'm more invested in this than I think I realized
I only know about the Iron Mugulus arc and the Horse Council arc...
@@Joker22593 "Arc" lmfao
Some of these audio edits are way too fast/overlapping. This wasn't an issue in previous videos, don't lose that quality, Mr Cool!! 🙏🏻
seconded
yeah same, not sure if its my headphones making it move obvious to me but I noticed the audio edits and have never noticed them before.
I'm loving the vid, but did this audio is a little painful at times
top 3 type starting with letter "d"
Dragon, dark, and? Dairy??
Dteel
dragon, dark and the deez nuts type from too many types
Love my Dlying type mons
@shooby117 let's go miltank
I always thought it would've been cool if Dragonite kept Shed Skin from its preevolutions, a uniquely durable bulky attacker that gets great synergy with Fly to stall out status effects, and even in later generations gives it an ability that you'd occasionally run over Multiscale.
At the same time, Inner Focus gives it a Doubles-centric ability, for Intimidate and Flinch immunity
No dragalge or goodra mentioned despite the fact that they definitely had their place in their respective metagames and were totally viable.
Do you ever think its weird how dragonite never got any gimmicks? no mega, special z move, dynamax, or regional forms. It did get a great ability tbf but thats it really
Not even a unique move like dragon darts or even a stab physical attack
It kinda got "having extremespeed" as its pseudo gimmick
@@screwtokaiba linooone, arcanine, lucario, entie, arceus, deoxys, togekiss, zygarde want to have a word with you
@@TheUnique69able Thats still very very rare. At the time Nite regains it during g4, 8 entire line have the move. Since then only Kanto Beasts and HArc gets it
@@screwtokaiba I listed 8
GROODON MENTIONED!! this is insane
I'm pretty sure "what if a dragon was a bike" is the core concept for an entire Yugioh series
Best Dragon Flygon has graciously loaned it's Dragon typing to Magcargo, making it the first ever Horse/Dragon Pokémon. Let's hope Flygons sacrifice will help the war effort
Flygon is currently applying for the bug council, and everyone is on board except for Volcarona, who unfortunately has Quiver Dance Veto power, as a founding member.
False: two horse/dragon types already exist in dialga/palkia's origin forms
Can’t wait for the 1hr+ ground type vid talking about just Lando-T
I look forward to the conclusion to this series: Arceus in Competitive Pokemon, in which Jim explains the viability of every type of Arceus.
The Magcargo Revolution will defeat Horsea's tyranny!
2:02 Two Jims. This is insane.
The horse council stuff cracks me up 😂
🗣️🗣️REDESIGNED🗣️🗣️
My favorite part about dragon type is that it contains mons that don't even look like dragons
Some even look like horses.
Those are my favorite ones. You got bat dragons, leafy sea dragons, slug dragons… even draconic wyrm-worms in apples!
And it doesn't include mons that absolutely look like dragons. Truly a type that breaks stereotypes
Dragon types always felt like this mythical type. Even with the lack of dragon types and moves in the earlier gens their presence still felt strong.
game freak was like:
gen 1: make dragons really scarce
gen 2: cue gen 1
gen 3: let's make them stronger and more versatile
gen 4: fuck it, give them the most bonkers and spammable moves in the game. also let's release a bunch of very strong boxart legendaries
gen 5: give them stupid strong abilities! stupid high offensive stats!
...
gen 6: oh noooo we made dragons too strong, we have to make a new type to nerf them
Who killed Hannibal
@@sharkronical**me**
"Very strong box art legendaries"
Gen 9: bike
Dragon is a beloved type
With some of the most successful and iconic creatures in the series to it's name
This is a difficult type to dislike
This is insane.
Lanturn should also get to be an honorary horse for helping out like that. What a bro #lanturngang
I'm hoping for a surprise appearance during the climax of the civil war.
"Uh oh, in comes Lanturn."
I'll vote for chinchou but not lanturn
Dragon is a beloved Pokémon type. With some of the most successful and iconic creatures in the series to its name.
As an Altaria fan, getting mega-Altaria was a dream come true. I remember using a SPICY set I saw first on Pokeaim's channel back in 6th gen. It was a mono attack, set up set with Heal bell, roost, dragon dance, and frustration. With good defense/hp investment, it was nearly impossible to kill, and could set up to obscene levels. Frustration was the real gem, as it pooped on the ditto switch-in, since it would always be max happiness, because why wouldn't it be? Probably my favorite pokemon set still to this day.
Still use Altaria even without the mega. Fire spin/perish song is nasty in both singles and doubles/vgc
I've been waiting for this one I can't wait to hear about Salamence, one of my favorite Pokemon. I can't wait for the Steel type video either, so I can hear about Metagross, another one of my favorites. Thank you
Based Gen 3 superiority
You must have really loved that opening battle in XD gale of darkness
Dialga in DPP ubers might be my favorite #1 pokemon, thanks for showing everyone how cool it can be
The rebellion is imminent. Horsea is unable to be reasoned with. We can only hope that Magcargo is able to stabilize the fragmented remains of the Horse Council before all is lost & anarchy is all that remains.
Thanks for adding Ubers in these videos.
1:00:41 Fun fact, they're banned from NatDex actually.
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I've played pokemon since Gen 2, but I've never been into competitive until Gen 9 now! Keep up the great content. 😁
I needed this today :) Thank you as ever, Mr. Cool
great video jim, one of my favourites of this series! my fave dragon gotta be the OG dnite, with his wholesome cute but epic design, and how its sets have change from gen to gen, also tera normal espeed is a fun click
Horsea Rebellion will reveal the truest of revalations society may never come back from. 🐴
I used to think of dragon types as a bit boring but a video by big yellow changed my mind so I'm excited for this one ashiofd
I’m worried about Macargo’s ability to win against Horsea with that Double Water weakness, if only there were a vaguely horse shaped Slug with Storm Drain to support his stand against the horse rebellion…
Dragon is so good, it gets blanked by two of the best types in the game and is STILL amazing
I won't stand for Ultra-Necrozma slander. Coolest thing to come out of gen7
Those little animations in the intro are getting better and better 👌
When you do the Fairy type video you should also talk about Pokémon that used to not be Fairy types and how the type change effected them
Jimbo. Love these long form videos. From your favourite Pom
Slug convinced horses he's a horse, proceeds to cause horse civil war
I swear tfg this running lore you have going is so absolutely cracked brilliant, and is the whole reason I’ve been sticking around but you’re also just extremely knowledgeable.
I’ve been here since iron mugulus, Himothy. I’ve been here since “The Money Got Different”, Himothy. I’ve been here all along. When will my day in the equestrian sun come, Himothy?!?!?
Jim talks about balance like gamefreak tried to balance ADV around smogon singles, lol.
Shoutout Druddigon. Love love love that Mon w/ Sheer Force + Choice Band to bolster its Attacking ability to insane heights. Was great once Fairy come in if you IV it to hit 191 speed. Gunk Shot, Fire Punch and Earthquake just Nuke everything to eventually enable Outrage spam. One of my favorite wall breakers.

0:12 "has a certain mystique and flair to it" SHOWS FAMILY JEWELS ATTACK
I wonder if gruudon will join the horse council
Dragon is my favourite type, and my first two favourite Pokémon were Dragonite and Garchomp. This made Steel my second favourite type for obvious reasons, my favourite Pokémon of all is now Magearna because she's the perfect partner for my dragons.
I used to hate Fairies, but Magearna changed my view on that, so now I love the Dragon/Steel/Fairy core.
For breakfast tonight I had a prosciutto/mozzarella rollup that may have been a little on the old side, and a Mango Monster.
Interestingly, Latias seems to have surpassed Tyranitars rank in gen4 Ou, being the second best pokemon in the tier and the best dragon type too. And well, while Tyranitar is abusable to the fullest, there is nothing left that can switch into Latias blazing fast Draco Meteors.
Weird audio stuff in this one, but beyond that a great cross-generational recap as always 👍
Amazing video as always Mr Cool. My knowledge on how to train my dragon and the success of Magcargo gives me hope. Hope that Raichu too may see justice. Please support his fight and the other forgotten evolutions support the F.E.A thank you.
i luv u jimothy cool i think i watch ur vids more than any tv show anymore lmao
Dragon is a beloved pokémon type, with some of the most successful and iconic creatures to its name.
Sure
This is a difficult type to dislike
I tried many different OU pokemon teams in gen 5, and the one I had the most sucess with was a 5 dragon, 1 Magnezone team.
4 of those dragons had a choice band, and their main job was to click Outrage.
54:20 Would've loved you to say "We have a Creature of Lovecraft Ian Horror, not recognizable to the human eye.. and eternatus aswell" xd
thank you for the video these must be painful to edit
Magcargo has now gained access to High Horsepower, a powerful ground type move. Will it be enough to justify his admission to the horse council? Stay tuned for the update, folks.
"so i use Latios in gen fiv-"
"bro is using a psyspam drag-mag hyper offense. thats crazy"
>:(
Wow Jimothy Cool, you sure did talk about Dragon Types for 1 hour
Imagine Dracovish with water tera...
I really want to at some point see just a compilation of the different subscribe sagas of your channel, just in case I've missed something in the Magcargo Horsepower storyline
The gust on flygon made me think, what about a video of pokemon using weak moves because its their only option for specific things to great success?
In Gen 1 Ubers, Porygon runs Tackle because it has a lot of PP

It would be cool if Hydreigon got a mega evolution
Hell, I would go as far as to hope that Hydreigon gets 2 megas
I miss dragmag sometimes.
Imagine the dragon type
Anyone remember the Giratina-O suspect test in Gen 6 OU that totally wasn’t an April Fools joke?
Dragon is a beloved pokemon type
every out has its rage
I remember mega alt getting almost banned... It rose back to A rank in Oras vr so good for her
Absolutely Outrageous Type
Groodon rises like the land
Hydrapple imo, is the best gen 9-er as it is a nice balance between strong but not Op. it’s not optimised on every level - I love it
Is Palkia-Origin part of the Horse Council, or is it just a dragon? I am in want of clarity.
I noticed slight echoing. I would normally say this just as a heads up incase you wanted to know about it. But I also realize this could have been a subtle troll by jim to get engagement. If so - well played sir.
Gen 2 Dragonite's actually a bit better than what's shown here, as Pokemon Crystal gives it access to Extremespeed to couple with his high base ATK.
Still remains a relatively niche option though, as it really doesn't get much else in the way of physical offense, and Outrage is only 90 BP in this gen (and a special attack).
I noticed that you left out charizard for most of the video. The most Iconic Dragon.
Dracozolt with sand rush is kinda crazy
this is my regularly scheduled protest against gen 3 dragonite slander. physically bulky dragonite with heal bell and rest talk is excellent on defensive/stall teams, it eats focus punch and rock slide from any fighting type that isn't adamant banded medicham, can come in for an emergency heal bell against anything without ice coverage, and it can sit on half the tier while getting good chip with hp fly. breloom, celebi, charizard, claydol, flygon, heracross, moltres, defensive starmie and mono pert all get eaten alive
I had so much fun with Drag-Mag teams in gen 5. I got to run so many of my favorite pokemon on the same team and it was viable.
58:12 I never thought of it this way, but it is now obvious we should ban the Tour de France
When did the idea of a "win condition" become a thing in pokemon. I know the terms been around for like a decade at this but back in the Pokémon Labs day that was never talked about so just wondering when that became a term and philosophy in the game
The time Garchomp was in gen 4 OU was certainly something... It had the unique Property to 1v1 basically any Pokemon if holding Yache Berry, truely absurd.
While it is not a dragon type, another great dragon in gen 3 is Yanma. It is on the dragon council and is very good 78% of the time
Shout-out to my Rain Team Dragonite with Thunder, Hurricane, Surf, and Draco Meteor. It hit like a truck and with a surprise choice scarf it always outsped and destroyed other dragons. Miss my GOAT 💕
@jimothycool did you ever play Maplestory? 😮
