Nice one, that looked like a really nice spot for a camp. Got to love a minimalist camp too, makes you appreciate the simple pleasures that much more. Thanks for bringing us along 👍
👍👍👍 .. nice .. and it brought back some memories. Whilst serving in the SADF (South African Defence Force) from the late 60's into the 80's, we used the RSA version of the '58 Pattern. Very practical kit although, if the Web Belt was not tight around the hips .. the hips then taking a large % of the load, the load was then transferred to the Yolk which tended to make it uncomfortable on the shoulders. This was mostly the case because of the the amount of Ammo and Water that we carried, we were thus forced to make the Web Belt larger than the Waist in order to be able to accommodate the number of Pouches and Water Bottle Holders required. If required, for extras .. water and food, I carried the little Patrol Pack on my back. Back then, the Plastic Two Litre Coca Cola Bottles were absolutely 'Bomb Proof'. We used to remove the black plastic bottom flat base (it was just spot-glued on) with hot water, leaving the rounded bottom. This made for easier storage in the kit. Apologies for the diversion .. just felt like sharing it with someone 😊. One tends to overlook the older gear, thinking that 'newer must be better', which is not always the case .. especially if the older stuff has already been paid for and tends to last. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..
Gid to hear from ye mate.. Yno, I am really enjoying the gear from that time. I found most modern equipment, as light as it is, just doesn't feel hardy.. where as it's impressive how tough and resilient older gear is, and how much you can do with good simple gear. Other than being a wee bit heavier when wet.. I really can't beat it for this environment.. It's gid to hear from someone who has used the gear extensively.. I'm 6'6" and 120kg odd.. it would be handy if the belt was a bit bigger. At least over the jackets. I have yet to find that weight distribution you are talking about. Its wasnt uncomfortable.. but i know it could sit better. Will see what could be done Do you have any standout kit you could recommend? Especially when it comes to damp environments.. And do ye have any advice for maintaining that rubberised coating?
What an incredibly beautiful place. In this world it is becoming increasingly more difficult to steal a night or a minute or an hour for yourself, for being a natural creature in nature. The minimalist set up you have is ideal. It’s not about being insulated from nature. It’s about being with nature. I think you are a wise person. Thank you for the video.
That reminds me of something Duncan Trussel once said - ”Some poor, phoneless fool is probably sitting next to a waterfall somewhere totally unaware of how angry and scared he's supposed to be ” .. it certainly is a sanctuary out there in many ways.. everything just moving at the pace it is meant to.. Those kind of minimalist camps are always interesting.. there is a weird element of, for lack of a better word, "ordeal" that comes with it, which can highlight the moments of appreciation for the comforts you do have.. everything takes more effort but is much more rewarding.. highly advise people try it.. Thank you fir yer kind words 🌙 and I'm glad ye got a wee something from the video 🔥
Great stuff. As a kid and into my teens I used to live in 58 pattern webbing, you simply cannot kill it, if packed correctly it turns into a comfortable chair when you sit down. My only regret is I gave it away. Glad you are using it for camp outs.
Thanks bud! Aye, it certainly is indestructible.. looks like it has had a long and hard life before me, yet it still holds up in every way.. very impressed with how well it's made and how comfortable it is.. ye should get yersel another wee set and get yersel oot! 🌙
Ahhaa, I'm glad yer inty it and again, my pleasure! It's a fantastic old river.. real hidden gem for that area of Scotland.. thank you fir yer feedback mate🌙
Stunning place to park up ... bit of Guinness too😊 ...it did look cold though, I would have needed more coverage but thanks for showing how you set things up. Brilliant
Thank you 🌙 ach, I have had a worse night sleep in a tent when I was younger at festivals haha.. the long fire will do the trick and kept me warm.. I basically slept the whole way though after stacking it up.. although, I wouldn't "encourage" people to camp like that haha.. but it is quite a rewarding experience 🌿
A great, relaxing video! I’ve subscribed and I hope you can share some more of your adventures in the future. I visited the Cairngorms twice last year and want to travel to Fort William in the summer to climb in the Mamores and the Grey Corries. Thanks
Thanks bud! Aye.. I try not to film all time as it can easily become the whole focus and reson yea go out. I try not to force a schedule to it.. The videos will come as they come 😊 Ahh aye, I lived up in the Cairngorms for a while. Beautiful part of the world! And aye.. Fortwill is a crackin spot for that west coast vibe. I try to enjoy as much of it before the midgies pick up ahha Glad yea enjoyed the video
Hi! Where did you get your army woollen blanket from? Also how did you wax your jacket? Any tips? Cheers and love the vids! owpkelly from England! PS Guinness was a nice touch and the old gold bar 🤣
Hello! Ahh, I got both from army surplus stores. Most will have a selection of wool blankets (usually a blend) that will be muuuch cheaper than most other places. And it's really down to luck, some blankets will be 60% and others will be +80% wool.. I have a friend who found a bunch of marino wool blankets in a skip! Second-hand shops are also pretty good for that.. Check out - Military Mart - in Lancashire. Bought a few bits from them For the jacket, I buy - The Barbour Family Size Thornproof Dressing - and find it works well.. I will leave the tin (opened) in a pot of water, let the wax soften and melt, Take a moment to figure out zones on the jacket to focus on and how it's going to be laid out.. I start by applying a generous amount to the seams.. then place little clusters of hot wax and start to rub it in like yer trying to polish it.. joining the dots.. the friction and heat from yer hand should keep the wax soft.. yer meant to wipe off any leftover wax, but I just work it in.. as long as the jacket doesnt feel gunky to the touch.. a podcast helps as it takes quite a while.. One handy trick, is by the end, the cloth will be stiff and have absorbed a lot of wax.. just keep the cloth in a plastic food bag.. and if you want to top up the jacket, stick the cloth in a mug or bowl, pop it over a radiator and let the wax soften. Then just the cloth will be enough to top up little bits.. Thanks mate 🌙 glad ye get a wee thing from the videos.. haha, ohh, those gold bars are too good.. I had to give myself a talk and stop taking them out. Guinness on the other hand.. if it fits, its coming 😅
I believe that your gear rig is too low, sitting over your butt. Were you to modify it so that you carry a portion of the load at the upper center of your back, above your hips and put some critical gear - gear that you deem needed quickly such as a medical kit, fire kit, balaclava, folding hat, energy bars, gloves, etc. in a pouch at your chest, I'm confident you could move faster with less fatigue and greater comfort.
I agree with what you are saying there bud.. The issue I have is the belt won't wrap around my jackets when I am layered up like that. So the rig will generally need to sit on my jumper layer with jackets on top. So, if I wear the rig too high with this particular set up, the jackets will tend to ride up and become quite uncomfortable.. I am 6'6" and around 120kg, so most things like belts etc are already on the small side and need a bit of customisation, one way or another As it moves into spring, I'll begin to wear less clothes and definitely lift the webbing for a more suited fit.. I have never owned a chest rig.. but the surplus bits n bobs have caught my interest in the past. Do you have a model yea could recommend?
Thoroughly enjoyed that! Real pioneer vibes.. you're a brave man and a hardy soul for tackling those conditions with that kit!
