    I argue constantly with some of my buddies who caution me about "overloading short brass." They don't realize that the only reason for the higher brass was to keep the powder from burning the paper of the early hulls. They maintain that if they didn't need to put the extra metal on the hull, they wouldn't, because it costs more money. I load heavy buck and slug rounds in the short-brass Fiocchi hulls, and generally reuse them.

      and....low brass is for a specific reason, doesn't need resized, essential for us that burn thru and reload thousands of hulls for the trap range...can use a progressive loader.

    In my load below, the buckshot were right out of the mold, no tumbling and no lube. For deer and hogs I would tumble and powder coat. Many thanks Wade for all your fantastic help in educating me. I surely hope you could put out a reloading manual, as you are the PO Ackley of shot shell reloading!

    Thanks Wade. I always found it interesting the dynamic between 3.5” buckshot and 2.75” buckshot. You are correct, the individual pellets are the same size and moving faster in the 2.75”, the 3.5” just has more pellets.

    I was helping a buddy of mine put up stands yesterday with a new club he joined this year. I just can't work outside anymore until it finally starts to cool off. Those 105+ heat indexes just wear me down too. I'm a heavy guy, 50's, quit smoking for several years now but smoked for 24. The humidity keeps me from breathing some days. But after about noon that sun coming straight down on me wins every time. That's why hunting is so popular in the South. It's the first you can go outside. Reverse hibernation.

    A Wade, thanks for the information, this really good stuff. I reload my rifle and handguns, but I want start shotgun as well. Just a correction, your energy is 1/2 x mass x speed ^2. That tell you that for energy sake, speed has the biggest contribution factor. Energy transfer is key though, you can have lots of energy, but it would do no good if it does not get transfered. Larger projectles would transfer energy better than smaller. So it is a trade off that can be optimized by the shape and design of the projectile (bullet, pellet, slug...etc)

    Wade, question on chokes. I see you usually use the Kicks Buck standard full. My understanding is that choke was designed for factory buckshot that doesn’t use plastic shot cup wads. You are getting excellent performance with your plastic shot cup wads consistently in both your Stoeger and Rem 870. Can you comment? Thanks -Nick

    • @BubbaRountreeOutdoors
      @BubbaRountreeOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The design concept behind the Kicks chokes (as well as a lot of others) is to slow the wad to allow the pellets to advance ahead of the wad thus minimizing the chance for the wad to scatter the pellets as the gas escapes the barrel; Hence the ported tube. But, the short answer is Yes, the chokes were designed for factory type rounds but the chokes do their job and grab and slow any wad passing thru it! I like the Full choke but I have shot thru the Lite full as well with excellent performance, especially with the larger pellets sizes like #000 & #0000!

    • @paulrodriguez3982
      @paulrodriguez3982 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For heavy thick non toxic wads (TPS, TUWR, etc.) I find the Kicks is best. For the target lead wads, like the claybuster clones or factory, I find factory chokes are best. The kicks shreds the target wads, which in turn gives me poor patterns.

  • @charlesdeans7239

    #1 is super hard to find and the 20 pellet factory load was a sure deer stopper. But I had no idea that they were not using true .30 caliber pellets until I saw this video. That was great intel to have,thank you for putting that out there for us old school buckshot hunters to know. Do you ever sell any of the 14/15 pellet #1 true .30 caliber loads that you make? If so, I would be interested in getting some. I'm shooting a remington 870 21" barrel and a stoeger m2000 26 " barrel both with a patternmaster wad stopping long range choke. That choke was the best I ever ran across for shooting buckshot. I love it,but the deer hate it!! It would be great if i could send those # 1's after them again!!

    Wade you run 27-28 gr of long shot religiously as a long range. I’ve seen loads that run 37-38gr of long shot pursuing 1500-1600 FPS. I know your stover 300 is only a 3” chamber but for a guy who has a 3 1/2” chamber I’ve seen the pressures we’re around 11000. Does that seem about right? I have a load with 38 hrs long shot, in a 3” cheddite hull. FS12 gas seal and milar wrap with 18 31cal pellets. BP original buffer. My gun is an3 1/3 chamber. Looking forward a professional opinion. • @jacobackley502
      @jacobackley502 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never found any high velocity loads that pattern worth a damn. Keeping velocities around 1200 have patterned best for me. Buckshot pellets have the aerodynamics of a fat kid so they don't hold supersonic velocities very long, so at long ranges loads starting at 1500 going any faster than loads starting 1200. That's just my philosophy, if I want more powerful loads I use ones with more pellets

    • @denisdegamon8224

      No shotgun can handle 55,000 psi.
      Max SAMMI pressures for shotguns is 11,500 psi. I haven't seen any published loads that are any higher than 11,200 psi.
      At 55,000 psi your talking high pressure rifle chamber pressures. In a shotgun at 55,000 psi your talking about a bomb.

    • @andersonj1each26
      @andersonj1each26 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@denisdegamon8224 no published data but sammi did testing where they reached 55000 psi to intentionally blow up a shotgun. They can handle a lot of pressure. They proved that it takes ALOT of error to explode a shotgun and the published loads are a safety net but you can load them to higher pressures. Your chambering will determine your psi. But sticking to sammi specs is the safest option. You lose hull integrity before you’ll ever hurt your chamber

      Top loads in a 30-06 don't reach but 50,000 psi. SAMMI pressure limits set for a shotgun are 11,500 psi. At what you stated at 55,000 psi is closer to the maximum pressures for magnum rifle cartidges.
      That is almost 4.5 times the max pressure for shotguns. I never heard of any such testing that a shotgun can handle a 55,000 psi load without destroying a shotgun. Barrel steel in shotguns are no where the thickness of rifle cartridges. If such a test exists, please post it, I am sure everyone would like to see such foolishness. At these pressures many older mitary bolt action rifles would experience catastrophic failure.
      I do agree that SAMMI specs have a small percentage of fudge factor built in to protect fools. There is alot of very bad information out there on the internet, by self proclaimed experts, but go ahead and believe what you will. Don't kid yourself believing that, it won't end well for you and anyone around you.
      I would suggest that you call real expert's in any of the major powder companies or even Ballistic Products and see that they say about what would happen at 55,000 psi in any shotgun. They have sophiscated equipment for testing loads.
      PS: a gun may not blow up on the first round. Maybe even not after multiple rounds. However, there is severe damage being done to a firearm.....it's called metal fatigue. Over time such fatigue can cause a shotgun to blow up with even a standard loading. The military learned this during WW2 with artillery pieces after extensive firings of even standard loads.
