When I first revealed the John Deere 400 I didn't think I would start it up and just start to tear into the restoration process. After thinking about what the previous owner mentioned:" It should start right up!"...I decided to give it a try! I took the carburetor apart completely and I found a bunch of grime within the fuel-bowl. Everything was cleaned thoroughly and I was able to re-use every piece inside of the carburetor. The next step was to see if the engine will turn over by hand. To do that, I removed the sparkplugs, checked them if they were in good condition and I added oil into the cylinder head.
You may ask yourself:" Why does he add oil into the cylinder?"
I add oil down into the cylinder head to lubricate the cylinder bore. This John Deere has been sitting for many years and it needs lubrication before the oil pump supplies the cylinder bores with oil.
Once the oil was in the cylinders, I took off the front grill and turned over the engine with a 9/16 breaker bar and surprisingly, the engine turned over just fine! No scraping, no knocking, just the way it should turn over.
The next step was to check the electrical wires which go from the battery to the starter and everything measured just fine after a light touchup with a brass brush and scotch brite.
I was ready for the initial startup on the JD 400 and boy did I really enjoy the nice sound from the 2 cylinder 20HP engine (Kohler K532). I hope you did too!!

Thank you for your support Chad! Last time I mentioned that this funnels back into the channel and this Super-Like will too. I've recently been able to upgrade my gear with proper tripod-lighting, on-camera lighting and a Rode microphone. Hopefully this makes the videos better and the viewing experience. Thanks again and I'm glad this video helped you out!! Regards Andreas

Nice video! Can't wait for the restoration on the 400! The air filter on the 317 should be the same one on the 400. Nice video keep them coming!

Thank you Jason! I will get to it as soon as possible. That is correct, the air filter and air filter housing are exactly the same. It's very practical when different tractors share similar parts. Best regards

Thank you! I usually don't like to start engines without looking into them, but this one turned over smoothly by hand, so I tried it. I might make a step-by-step video on an upcoming rebuild :)
      Cheers

Man you got lucky with all the options on yours plus the 900 hours! The one I wanna buy has 1800 hours and part of a 3 point!

Hi there! I agree with you on that, I was pretty lucky. The John Deere 400 was John Deere's very first fully loaded garden tractor some really neat features. This tractor had the 3-point hitch and rear PTO option which is just great and it also came with a 48" rototiller. In all, I was very pleased with the bundle-deal and now it has been restored, so it can be used for many years to come.
1800 hours isn't actually that bad for a garden tractor! When you look at how old these tractors are, you might come down to ~40 hours of use every year , since the year of production. That's really not a lot if you get some mowing, tilling or even some other garden tasks done around the property. These Sundstrand rear-ends are rating for ~5000 hours of service life, so you still have many years of life left in that.
You want to take a good look at the engine and figure out what condition the other parts are in. You'll be able to identify wear, if you grab a lever or even the steering wheel and it just shakes from left-to-right.
You can always fix something down the line and I hope these video will assist you along the way. Regards Andreas

Sounds like it's only running on one cylinder

    • @WorkshopRebuild

I can assure you it was running on both cylinders, as I've checked the coil to sparkplugs before starting the machine. The audio in the video sounds a bit off, as there are steel buildings in the background and I believe that what makes it sound like a "miss and hit" engine. Thanks for your comment, Kind regards

I agree. Sounds identical to my 420 when it had one cylinder. Regardless of camera angle.
